The "Fourth Reich"?

It's starting to feel like 1933 here in A-merry-ca. February 28, 1933, to be exact.

But thankfully, folks are still allowed to write opinion pieces like the following:

"The first thing that must be said about the mosque at ground zero is that it is not just a mosque, and it is not at ground zero.

Granted, calling it an Islamic center that contains a prayer space, a spa, a swimming pool, community meeting rooms, a 9/11 memorial, an auditorium, a basketball court, classrooms, and an exhibition space - to be located two blocks away and around a corner from ground zero, at a site Muslims are already using for prayers - doesn't have quite the same kick as calling it the mosque at ground zero. It's just a more accurate description.

Facts matter, and they seem to be in short supply in this ugly fight.

It's also important to note that the controversy over the center, which has now engulfed the president, is only one of several that have flared up across the country over mosque construction or expansion plans. Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, California - all have seen fights over mosque proposals. There are even two other New York mosque projects, in Brooklyn and Staten Island, that have provoked attacks and demonstrations.

There have also been attacks on existing mosques, not just planned ones. A bomb exploded during services at a mosque in Jacksonville, Fla., and there have been reports of arson and vandalism of mosques in Texas and Tennessee. (No one was hurt in the incidents, which are being investigated.)

Murfreesboro, Tenn., is witnessing a particularly ugly construction standoff, with many of the same features as the fight in Lower Manhattan. Mainstream politicians running in tough primary races have attacked the project there, and so have grassroots activists affiliated with local tea party groups........as Park51 after its address on Park Place - were high-profile grassroots activists, including Mark Williams, then-leader of a group called the Tea Party Express. He labeled the center a "monument" for the "worship of the terrorists' monkey-god."

One key opposition group, Stop the Islamization of America, is well-known for the inflammatory rhetoric of its leaders. They include Pamela Geller, who didn't bother providing a shred of evidence when she suggested that funding for the center could be "tied to jihad or terror." (There is no funding at the moment.) Geller has called for a ground zero rally on the anniversary of 9/11, and she has been touting Geert Wilders, a virulently anti-Muslim Dutch politician, as a featured speaker.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, has highlighted Geller associate John Joseph Jay as "truly vicious." According to the center, Jay wrote in his (all-lowercase) blog: "if islam kills non-believers as a matter of religious doctrine, then why should muslims expect to be free of retribution in the name of those islam kills?"

These are the people who defined and framed the debate over the Lower Manhattan Islamic center. Now the controversy has gone viral, attracting opposition to the project from ambitious mainstream politicians, including Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich, both of whom are toying with presidential runs, and Rick Lazio, a Republican candidate for governor of New York. Palin has ratcheted up the rhetoric, referring to Park51 as the "9/11 mosque....We should bear in mind that it's election season, and some politicians have clearly calculated that opposing the center - and similar projects around the country - will translate into political and financial support. But why should that be? And why should the construction of a house of worship in America - a country founded partly for the sake of religious refuge - become a full-blown national controversy?

Here we come to the key fallacy driving these fights - the "big lie," to use Hitler's term for a falsehood so preposterous that it goes unchallenged. In this instance, the lie is that Muslims attacked America in the name of Islam.

The U.S. government bears much of the responsibility for propagating this myth in the wake of 9/11. It allowed - indeed, encouraged - the view that a political attack carried out by a tiny group of radical terrorists was, in fact, an attack on America on behalf of all Muslims in the name of Islam. This was the argument disseminated by al-Qaeda itself. Hence, the federal government was in the curious position of promoting al-Qaeda's propaganda.

That al-Qaeda is a gang of disgruntled thugs - many of whom were our disgruntled thugs during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan - is deemed irrelevant in this view. They were our "freedom fighters" when Ronald Reagan was president; now they "hate our freedoms," as George W. Bush put it.

Of course, President Bush spoke in mosques, invited imams to the White House, and intoned that "Islam is peace." At the same time, though, his administration was interrogating tens of thousands of Muslims and jailing thousands of them, investigating Muslim students, using Byzantine immigration laws against Muslims and deporting tens of thousands of them, employing the Energy Department to monitor mosque radiation levels, using the Census Bureau to identify Muslim neighborhoods, and sending the FBI out to count American mosques.

This intense investigative focus on Muslims during the last several years, coupled with a constant labeling of terrorist plots as Muslim, created a fertile field for xenophobia.

Now Bryan Fischer, a leader of the fundamentalist American Family Association, has gone so far as to state flatly that Muslim Americans are by definition treasonous. "Permits should not be granted to build even one more mosque in the United States of America, let alone the monstrosity planned for ground zero," Fischer wrote recently on his blog. "This is for one simple reason: each Islamic mosque is dedicated to the overthrow of the American government."

Fischer's solution? Repatriate Muslims to their home countries. This completely ignores the fact that close to a majority of the five million to eight million Muslims in this country were born here, and roughly a third are African American. Facts do matter. " [Story]

No they don't Mr. Salisbury, not if you are a wingnut.

Finally, I just read that James Jackson Kilpatrick is dead. May he go straight to hell. (If there is such a place.) The next time one of you black conservatives try to justify your political stance here in A-merry-ca, just remember that folks like James Jackson Kilpatrick was one of the founders of your movement.

"Pamela Geller, who didn't bother providing a shred of evidence when she suggested that funding for the center could be "tied to jihad or terror.""

This isn't the first time I've read about this rumor. I had no idea that terrorism was a money-making proposition. I assumed that the money was flowing in the other directions, as when American Irish Catholics gave money to IRA bag men.

"Of course, President Bush spoke in mosques, invited imams to the White House, and intoned that "Islam is peace.""

What? You mean to say that George W. Bush consorted with known terrorists?

But seriously, thanks for highlighting this story. I'm afraid the Palin/Beck/Gingrich/Limpburger cabal is louder and appeals to people's fears, and fear is a great motivator. And the noise is only going to get louder and more inflammatory as we approach Eid al-Fitr which, unfortunately, falls on or near 9/11 this year. The Religious Reich is bound to interpret the celebrations as proof that they are right about "all Muslims," and no amount of facts are going to change their minds.

In other words, you're agreeing with the nazis that people who oppose the construction of the mosque and people who express their distrust of muslims by listing the stunningly long list of atrocities committed by muslims since, let's say, the assassination of Robert Kennedy, should lose their right to alert the country to a danger growing within.

P.S. About 1% of the US population is believed to be muslim. That's about 3 million people. But maybe we have an illegal muslim problem too.

Acutally, before 9/11 there was a big illegal muslim population right over here by me in Brooklyn. But after 9/11 thousands and thousands got out of town in a hurry.

"This is also why the issue of the mosque and community center near the site of 9/11 is a sideshow. The truly important question “is not can the different Muslim sects live with Americans in harmony, but can they live with each other in harmony,” said Stephen P. Cohen, an expert on interfaith relations and author of “Beyond America’s Grasp: a Century of Failed Diplomacy in the Middle East.”

ns, there are probably three times as many Muslims in the USA than you have indicated. The sudden expansion of mosques to be built across our sacred country are good indicators that there are a lot more muslims than we want to admit.

News flash. Muslims frequently make statements about their grand building plans. But generally, reality falls short.

At this point, the dirtbag imam rauf had denied that he's gotten any funding and he has denied that he's gotten any pledges of funding. Of course that's because he knows where the money's coming from, and Pam Geller is right. It will come from sources that also fund terrorists, which means the mosque will have ties -- direct ties -- to muslim terrorism.

That aside, the dirtbag imam has said the site will have all the features you mentioned. He also said the site would cost $100 million.

That's got to be some kind of spending record. Blowing $100 million to recondition an existing building so that it's like a standard NY City YMCA.

Is anyone aware of a recreation center built for $100 million that let's people in for free?

Are muslim women going to swim in the same pool as men? If so, I'd say this place will set a record for the number of honor killings.

But that's jumping ahead. You can count on the standard high level of muslim incompetence to force the dirtbag imam rauf to scale back the project. First, he'll have to scrap the pool. Too expensive. Then the gym. Finally, the project will have only enough money for the prayer hall -- the mosque -- and it will become a recruiting center for terrorists.

You seem to think this project has guaranteed funding and approved plans. It has neither. It has only the early stages of muslim bluster.

Meanwhile, you seem to think that because this dirtbag imam is running it now, he will remain the head of it for all time. That's not how these things work.

Unfortunately I did not know about today's demonstrations at the mosque. If i had known I would have gone. However, I do plan to be there on 9/11.

To try to build a mosque near ground zero has opened a can of worms for muslims in America.

Poor Jody, she went to NYC for nothing. the poor girl has her priorities misplaced. she should be out in CA campaigning for Prop8, where it might benefit her. Naw, there won't be any ban on Prop8...

Returning from a couple of weeks out of 'mur-ka and I notice things haven't changed much.

The wingnuts' problems with "mooslims", as personified by slappy, present a bit of a paradox. Slappy assures us that no Muslim nation has ever amounted to much, while simultaneously quivering with fear that the Muslims are taking over the US, one mosque at a time. Well, which is it?

The idiocy from the right wing chattering class on the so-called Ground Zero Mosque is willful stupidity. Facts or logic mean little, fear mongering means everything.

n_s reminds me of those guys who hang out in the locker room at the gym. You never see them in the weight room, but they always seem to be in the showers. Undermining this nation by spreading an ideology that rejects our highest principles is one threat that our military cannot counter. Maybe you'll get the idea there is more than one way to conquer a nation, even a powerful one.

However, I do believe Americans are capable of stopping the spread of the vile islamic ideology in this country.

Meanwhile, one of the disturbing parts of the islamization of a nation is how the process takes the country backwards, on a path to the 7th century, where muslims want to be.

As I said, muslim nations are backwards, repressive places. Nevertheless, the religion/government/military is gaining strength in Africa, notably in Nigeria, which ensures the misery in that nation will continue till the end of time.

Other than oil, muslim nations produce NOTHING of value. There are no world-class industries in muslim nations. Nothing is invented or created in muslim nations because islam is the death of intellectual curiosity and innovation.

What I want to know is why the President felt he had to weigh in on the mosque controversy? IMO, he should have remained silent and let the people, who know best handle this. 70% Americans and the percentage is growing, do not want the mosque near Ground Zero. So why are some of you folks making a big stink about it?

In America, the majority has a lot of pull. GET IT? Americans don't care which politician says what. They care about the safety of their country. This is rather true. There's little doubt that fundamentalist Islam has destroyed the intellectual fabric of Muslim societies. However, the Middle East once once a vast repository of intellectual thought while Europe was mired in its own fundamentalist era.

Christianity we know today has a much diminished power over so-called Christian societies. If science and the Enlightenment hadn't broken the power of the church in Europe, we might have ended up much like the Muslim world. Yet, the Christian right would like us to return to the days were things like Evolution, stem cell research, and environmental science didn't exist; hence, we have the Christian fundamentalists.

  37. i'm in a minority of people, i guess, who is sick and fucking tired of talking about this thing. seriously: there are about 20 people who will make the decision if it's built or not, and all of them live in and/or work for the city zoning board, of NYC. Bloomie may decide to step in, but honestly, i really can't be bothered to care. buildings go up in america by the 00s every day. zoning boards are variously corrupt, or not. i don't live there, it's no relevant to me at all and won't change my life in any way if it goes up or not.

what does disturb me: how many people can't seem to NOT talk about this issue, as if it really mattered. not dissing you, FN, nor anyone here, but still. can we focus on what's happening, for real? like so many ginned up "controversies" all this is really about is distracting people from the issues that matter. the wars/occupations that cost us trillions. the bankster bailouts. the lack of jobs. the disaster in the Gulf that isn't over, and about which the government (a democratic government, even!) continues to lie about... the list goes on and on. but far too many people generate strong emotions over non-issues like this, because they can't look away from the TV. it's very sad.

You have a great point. As I remember it, Blacks marched, got beat up, got thrown in jail, and even died for their rights. Note that I said, BLACKS fought for THEMSELVES.

I haven't seen any Muslims doing much fighting for themselves. But plenty of self-sacrificing Blacks have been 'jumping out there' for them, esp on this blog. The Muslim-Jihadists have said NOTHING while others have been fighting for them. It reminds me of the Gulf War in Kuwait. America did the fighting for those spineless peace-loving Islamists. Now we are doing it again, except we are doing it on our own soil for all Muslims here who have yet to voice their solidarity with their fellow Americans in fighting the war against terrorists of the Muslim world.

Quite honestly, I don't believe the average American Muslim really gives a shit about Americans and their fellow men. As I have mentioned in another comment, I remember clearly, that Muslims around the world rejoiced the day those planes flew into the WTC and killed 3500 Americans. I still see them similing in my mind. And I am amazed no one on this blog remembers that!

Fortunately 70% of Americans DO remember and are responding the way any human being with a heart in America would respond. And if American Muslims really want to be heard, then they should get off their asses and let their voices be heard--instead of Blacks and others speaking for them.

BTW black folks, you are doing it ONCE AGAIN...you are running 'point man' to be the first sacrificed for a group of people who hates your black asses. Once again, Blacks are TEACHING others that they will be there for them even though they know others WON'T be there for them.

Well, as a black person, let me be clear: I don't want a mosque built near Ground Zero where American love ones were killed by Muslim-Jihadists in the name of Islam. Go fuck yourselves and your so-called rational goddamn minds cause I don't want to here it.

Try again in another 10 years when feelings might not be so raw; and emotions don't run so high; and we aren't in a fearful war with those Muslim Jihadists terrorists who want to destroy us. Can you hear the rational logic behind that? Probably not.

Black Women do not hate their hair. Other folks do and it is their problem.

Black Women, reserve the right to braid, twist, loc, straigthen, plait, cornrow, weave, etc their hair. Why? Because it is THEIRS!

IF you could stop being racist, you will see white and other women emulate Black Women with the many options for how we wear our hair. Were it NOT for racist idiots like yourself, it wouldn't take Bo Derek or some other white woman emulating Black Women for said styles to be BEAUTIFUL.

  46. It is ashamed that there are so many people living in America that are burden down with fear. I can't live like that. Nope!

I will never understand how some people are so fearful of dying that they are afraid to live and let live. Does it ever occur to them that we all have a set time to die, regardless. No human being is gonna live forever, nor can they prevent the way they will die from happening. And no one on this earth knows where, how, or when that time will be. You can just as easily die in your sleep, die in a car accident, die from natural causes.

People need to try living one day at time and pray that they'll be blessed with one more day, but I guess that is too complicated for them in this day and age.

Anonymous has a fear of Jihadist terrorist that has consumed their very being and that is sad. I wonder has it occurred to them that something as simple as the air we breath daily is killing people, the food we eat with all its perservatives is killing us, the medicines some take are killing them too. There are many things that we don't fear that are killing us daily, but anonymous and others fear people different from them and those same people more than likely fear anonymous and Americans too.

I remember once reading a letter that Farrahkhan wrote to President Bush telling him not to go to war with Iraq and believe it or not that letter was prophetic. However, most people kill the message sometimes because they don't like the messenger. Funny, God sent a mule to give a message in the bible once, but Balaam had sense enough to listen and take heed.

That mule was representative of how stubborn some folks can be in their fears. They don't want to give them up. Nope! They'd rather live in fear for the rest of their lives than to enjoy peace of mind while living and letting others live.

I betcha the hospital emergency rooms are filled with more people suffering from anxiety which is caused by fear than anything else and suffering from sicknesses that are not real but caused by anxiety and stress.

The story of Job wasn't just about a man of faith, it was also about fear, but most people don't catch on to that part of the story. Just like they don't understand how destructive fear is or what the seed of fear will produce.

Rather than upholding the Constitution, you're spitting on it, using this controversy, as Bush used the threat of another terrorist attack in this country, to keep power, and to expand it.

You and your ilk don't trust the Constitution to keep us strong and safe. You have to violate it in the name of protecting it.

Second guess what's three blocks from Ground Zero? Unlike the Gym and prayer area, this is a Mosque and been there a while. Finally some pundits on Sunday said that this bigotry coming from some of our white brothers is a THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY. Iman Rauf is working for the State Department trying to calm the Muslim commumity overseas this week. The bigots aren't making his job any easier. It's kind of dangerous for him to go to the Mideast when at a funeral for Richard Pearle he said "I am a Jew".

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, has highlighted Geller associate John Joseph Jay as "truly vicious."

Your claim does NOT exist on the Southern Poverty Law Center website.

According to the center, Jay wrote in his (all-lowercase) blog: "if islam kills non-believers as a matter of religious doctrine, then why should muslims expect to be free of retribution in the name of those islam kills?"

Actually, this tidbit was posted by The Daily Kos. The SPLC merely repeated the Kos statement.

Meanwhile, have you nitwits forgotten that muslims have been killing large numbers of other muslims and non-muslims around the globe for decades? And they ALWAYS do the killing in the name of their crazy god and muhammad.

Unlike some threats -- sometimes nothing more than disturbances in anxious minds -- muslims have committed murder non-stop for decades. And they are proud of it.

Most recently, the muslim bomber of Pan Am Flight 103 was released from prison and given a hero's welcome in Libya, his home. If you have forgotten that story, well, al-Megrahi planted a bomb that detonated in a jet as it flew over Lockerbie, Scotland and 290 innocent victims were murdered.

In Libya, he's a returning hero. That's what islam does.

I do not understand black Americans obsession with defending Muslism and Islam.
Many immigrant Muslims don't even like black people. They usually stay far away from African Americans and many did not vote even for Obama.
The large majority of Arabs, Pakistanis, Turks ,foreign born and children of foreign born Muslims are conservative Republicans.
It does not matter what white conservatives say about them, Muslims are much closer in values and views with white conservative Americans than with African Americans.
These Muslism don't even see NOI and the Black Sunnis here in the States as equal.
They know pretty well that the vast majority of Black American Muslims do not represent the very best of black America but ex convicts .
I wish black people would refrain from jumping into every controversy. This mosque is not a black problem. Obama should have butted out of it.
Let the folks involved solve their own problem.
This is not a freedom of religion issue because no one is against building the mosque alone, it is the location of the mosque that is the problem. This is a sensitivity issue similar to rednecks flying the oconservative flags. I can understand the relatives of the victims of 9/11 voicing their opinion against thie mosque.I have yet to see moderate muslims taking a stand. Tnis is ther time to take a stand and at least say something. Please black people butt out, this is not your problem.

  82. Zaida,
The issue has nothing to do with Black folks supporting Islam, but Black folk being American. If this issue had arisen some 40 year ago and succeeded in banning that center, that Black church I spoke of would have been leveled. There would have been a precedent set and perhaps the revocation of the 1st amendment. They say that 70% of Americans oppose that Muslim center. All it takes is for two thirds of the states to ratify a constitutional amendment to alter or repeal the 1st amendment. There is talk of repealing the 14th amendment now in congress, which could greatly affect the citizenship status of Black people, even though it is currently propose because of illegal immigration.
You need to beware of wolves posing in sheep's clothing, because it only takes an instant for the mobs appetite to morph from Muslim to Blacks.

I far as I am concerned you can fly the Confederate Flag on your lawn, wear it on your backside or on the side of your car, wave it at your rallies, but you can not fly it upon any US State Building for the same reason you cannot fly the Soviet flag.

So let me get this straight.

Are you actually stating that none of these issues are discussed by black folks or haven't been discussed on Field's blog?

Or are you one of the self-appointed Black Taliban who are attempting to dictate what subjects black should only discuss?

And why is that the biggest yappers about the supposed lack of respect toward black women are the biggest demonizers of black men?

    Wrong assumption.

"What if a Field said on his Blog that he's only going to help Black men and he doesn't have time for Black women ? "

That was a poor analogy. When black people continuously expend energy on non-black minority groups there is never reciprocation. Black women have always found time to help, uplift and support black men. If the black man uplifts the black woman, not only will he continue to receive reciprocation, but he would be helping himself. Black people would be strengthening the barriers against ALL our oppressors.

"I'm down with anyone that getting shafted,"

If only the other minority groups could feel that same way towards black people who are always getting it up the shaft without their assistance or reciprocation.

"Willie Lynch is dead and so is his way of training "slaves".'

Let the rich, white skin loving Saudis , Emiratis, Turks, Iranians and foreign born Muslims and their children defend their mosques.
Do you see latinos, Chinese, Koreans,Indians, Philipinos,Native Americans and other groups voicing their concern.NO.
They are smart enough to know that this is not their issue.
All of a sudden black people are interested in freedom and defendng people's rights under the Constitution.
Why the hell don't you defend the rights of those blacks who are forced to live in crime ridden areas?
Oh, Hypocrites. Because this does not involve Whitey.
Those Muslims are not interested in any of you.
They love white people anyway and will vote Republican tomorrow against you to defend their economic intertest and social values.

La, I agre with you. This is not our problem. Most of the funding will come from maybe Saudi Arabia the Emiratis, and God knows where.
Those Muslims will be able to raise the entire money in perhaps a day.
Why are black people concerning themselves with and wasting time and energy over this.
And this is an ongoing problem with black people always getting heated up over inconsequential issues that are just not important to the upliftment of any one of us.If this had been anything to defend the honor of black women,to try to end street crime, improve education for black children, none of them would get involved or even open their mouths.
And I am supposed to be concerned about this mosque, and defend its construction which has nothing at all to do with me.
Let the rich white loving Emiratis and Saudis living here in the States and abroad defend this issue. They have the time and the resources.

  89. For the record I really don't have an opinion where the "Muslim center" is built. And I understand the bigotry and the American contradiction against them.

However, I just wanted to point out if the tables were turn, these same predominantly non-black oriented groups would not lift a brow to a "black cause" or even a "black Muslim cause" if it didn't benefit them directly in some way. These groups have their own resources and support networks, much greater than what black people have been able to obtain for themselves in and outside of America. Black people in general need to understand that. That's all.

  92. "Black women have always found time to help, uplift and support black men."

Black women were critical to the Civil Rights movement; though, they were almost completely shut out of leadership positions within organizations of the time. Correta Scott King stood by her husband through thick and thin, despite the fact that he was seldom home and despite the fact that he cheated on her innumerable times.

Black women were also crucial to the Black power and Black nationalist groups of the sixties and seventies, despite the fact that sexism was rampant in such organizations.

Elaine Brown became head of the Black Panthers only to resign due to rampant sexism and the sanctioned beating of a female member. Women like Brown and Angela Davis had supported the organization despite its flaws, including the inclusion of an admitted rapist-Eldridge Cleaver-among its top ranks.

Go to any black church today and you'll find it wouldn't exist without its female members-who are almost always the majority. Yet, how many congregations are headed by women ?

  93. Foolish Abeed Kid:
Prince Bandar is the son of a white skinned Saudi prince and a black Sudanese concubine/slave.
His father ignored him when he was a child because of his dark complexion.
It is because of Bandar's cunning and intelligence which he used for his advantage, forcing his father to send him to aviation school where he excelled and thus gained his father's confidence.
Prince Bandar could have easily have been relegated to a slavish position within the kingdom. Remember there are many dark skinned, second class versions of Bandar, the result of the control and power that Saudi mnen have over their slave/concubine women, many from the dark Muslim world.

Hence the term "abeed", used a lot by Arabs in the Middle East.
Most foreign born Muslims are not fond of black skinned people and do not regard themselves as blacks. They love white skin poeple.
Amazing, African American Muslim men rush to Morocco to marry mulatto looking Morrocoan women and Morrocoan men rush to Europe and the States to marry white women.
I agree with La: If this were some black issue, foreign born Muslims would not lift their voice to defend black people.
This mosque is not our concern.

  101. While I can certainly appreciate the argument that Black Americans should be self-interested just like every other group, there are some issues which speak to all of us as Americans and that which everyone should be involved in and aware of. And anyway Blacks and Muslims are not by definition separate groups. There are quite a few Black American Muslims as well as Black Muslims of more recent foreign ancestry (Somalis, Nigerians, Sengelase, Algerians, etc...) The Black man that was accosted by the anti-Muslim people at the "rally" may have been in real danger. They assumed he was a Muslim because of how he looked. Dangerous stuff.

The proposed Park 51 center is not about supporting immigrants or thinking that they are great people. Some of them are, some of them aren't-just like any other group. It's about the basic ability of American citizens and legal residents to enjoy the rights guaranteed under the First Amendment to worship where they please. This is exactly the sort of stuff that was going in Detroit back in the nineties when whites hit the roof over the Malcolm X academy in Warrendale. We can't allow the majority to start bullying people and determine when, where, how and under what conditions the minority may exercise their rights. It's about having basic knowledge of religion to understand that Rauf and his wife are not the Muslims who committed 9-11. As mentioned Sufi's are often attacked and killed by fundamentalist Al-Quada types. It's about realizing that there are already strip clubs in the area as well a mosque at Ground Zero that's been there for decades. So this has nothing to do with any sort of GZ sanctity and everything to do with ginning up anti-Muslim xenophobia. No law has been broken and the appropriate rules have been followed to a t. So there is no legal reason to prevent the center from being built. Bloomburg, who is a passionate supporter of Israel supports Rauf, who is not, because Bloomburg on this issue at least, is smart enough to understand that once you decide to ignore minority rights on one issue, there's no telling where it may stop. There are greater goods in the world than pure self-interest.

The idea that there is or should be some sort of Muslim-exception to constitutional rights doesn't fly.

What about Black Muslims with identifiable long American ancestry? e.g Keith Ellison. Should they also be prevented from building or expanding mosques or would this ban only apply to "foreign" Muslims? And how far away would the Park 51 center need to be from Ground Zero if 2 blocks is not enough? Five blocks? Ten blocks? One borough?

And can demagoguery over this issue be applied to other "strange" religions or just Islam? If say a bunch of White Christians in Michigan decide that a synagogue is too close to some historic Christian site would people be sympathetic? What about Hindu temples? Many of them haven't exactly received warm welcomes from the larger majority community.

Does that mean that white women are supporting, uplifting, and helping white men with no return???

And are you telling me that black women in no way have benefitted from the work of the Civil Rights movement or the black church???

This is just some more tired black male bashing from bitter females who can't deal with the fact that black males are not going passively accept their demonization of us.

"Why exactly should there be? How many Muslim-especially Arab groups-do you see protesting on behalf of blacks."

They are not helping us.These are the things that black men and women should be looking into rather than going blindly into the night supporting people who do not support us.

Rippa, will they allow us to form alliances with them so that we can uplift ourselves? Again, uplift ourselves and compete with them? And why can't we solve our problems and "exclusive" issues on our own? Is it because we are busy expending energy on other people's exclusive issues perhaps? Based on your premise, it would seem everyone should help each other. Perhaps that is the problem, no one else is helping us solve our issues and concerns? Reciprocation my dear, it works wonders.

Rippa said "@Zaida: What Arab has prevented anyone black from opening businesses in communities of color?"

Since we will go there. What "Arab", Asian, non-black Latin/Hispanic or other non-black minority community would allow and support multiple black owned businesses in their communities? None. And while we are at it (don't get me confused with those extremist anti-Mosque folk) what Jewish or non-black Muslim community in America would even allow a "black" Baptist church or "black community center" in the midst of their communities? Take your time.

"See, the problem with black folks - which is emblematic of 400yrs of oppression - is that the first thing we worry about is whats in the next niggas pockets."

True. That's why it seems some of us rather give our money as well as our "time" and "support" to others. Not one is better than the other, we end up the same place.
"Niggas find comfort in looking down on other minority groups because the white man has beaten that game into our heads."

Blacks in America are not the only "minority" group that has the handle on this. Every minority group in America is trying to climb the racial totem. However, black people always seem content being at the bottom. Others feel content with blacks being at the bottom also, they have that in agreement with each for sure. People keep talking about the "white man" oppressing blacks, one oppressor always replaces another. Today its the "white man" tomorrow it will be____. There is no kumbaya alias and "one love" unity for black people regarding other minority groups in America, wake up. My words doesn't sound pretty, I don't agree with the ideal, but it is the reality.

Living in the US isn't a tit for tat existence, every gain Black folk have gotten is because we had a basic legal system. We did not have enough people to win a revolution like Haiti. A civil war between Blacks and whites would have decimated our numbers in the US.

So are we to give up the rule of law, because those people don't care about us, their religion is different, it doesn't concern us? Then it appears that we justify every wrongly convicted Black person, discrimination and apartheid, because the constitution means nothing to us.

  130. Honestly, we're talking about this so-called 'WTC Mosque' nonsense? Its simple -- the Muslim leaders who bought the land have the right to build anything they want under the 1st Amendment and New York state law. Its a community center -- churches build them all the time.

This is a distraction to scare stupid (mostly white) people into voting for the GOP -- instead of noticing that it was the GOP that got us into this economic mess and have been the main one blocking anything that could fix it. And yes, if anyone outside of New York City is concerned about a Islamic community center being built, they are absolutely stupid and fearful.

Unfortunately, Americans have proven to be ill-informed and foolish. Hence, this obvious race-baiting is working, even on Black folks who should know better.

First, inasmuch as there are so few "black-owned" businesses, what gives you the idea the existing black-owned businesses need to expand outside their traditional markets and neighborhoods?

Second, almost every -- I can think of NO exceptions -- black-owned business is focused on serving black customers. Hence, the idea of expanding into other minority communities makes no sense.

Here in NY City there is Carver Bank. It presents itself as a black bank. The incompetent CEO is a black woman and most of the employees are black.

Interestingly, the bank's ads seem to suggest the bank discriminates against non-black customers. But nobody complains.

Meanwhile, most of the branches are in black neighborhoods and one or two are in malls that are in commercial areas. The headquarters office is on 125th St in Harlem.

And while we are at it (don't get me confused with those extremist anti-Mosque folk) what Jewish or non-black Muslim community in America would even allow a "black" Baptist church or "black community center" in the midst of their communities? Take your time.

News flash -- every house of worship attempts to position itself as close as possible to its worshippers. Walking distance, if possible.

However, if you want an example of an area that contradicts your assertion, come to Brooklyn.

You can find temples, mosques and churches beside each other. I can even give you an example of a temple that shares its space with a black baptist church.

Obviously you have NEVER bought a piece of land and planned to build or rebuild on that property.

You CANNOT build "anything you want" on any piece of land, especially in NY City. Zoning laws trump the First Amendment because the First Amendment has no connection to the approval of land use and construction plans.

In theory, there's no reason a mosque -- and it will be a mosque -- cannot be built on the contested NYC site. However, there are some sticky questions about the ownership of this property. The despicable developers own part of it. But not all of it. The owner of the other section has to agree to the mosque and there is no guarantee of that.

Its a community center -- churches build them all the time.

This "community center" concept is amusing. I've read about a pool and a gym.

Okay, about the pool? Are men and muslim women both going to enter the pool at the same time while wearing conventional western bathing suits?

Will the "community center" admit anyone? Will the proposed $100 million community center charge a membership fee? Or will it be free to all?

Will non-muslims be permitted to enter it? If yes and fees are charged, will non-muslims pay a fee different than muslims?

Have muslims ever before built a "community center" in America?

Where will the $100 million to build this "community center" come from?

The only obvious source of that much money is theocratic muslim governments that are the definition of anti-Americanism.

And now when it comes to "freedom of religion" for Muslims, you now wish to deny them constitutionally-protected rights. And now you want us to support you, and the Constitution by trashing it because you believe your enemy will use it against you.

Islam has no appeal, but freedom does. That document was intended to preserve the freedoms of all, regardless of country of origin, or religious practice, or belief.

Yes, whitey is the devil, while at the same time, black wealth is bleeding daily out of the community into Whitey's hands in all areas.
If Whitey is the enemy why do black people hand over black wealth to him and to everybody else ?
But whenever a black person speaks the truth, he is an Uncle Tom and a Tea Bagger.
I am not interested in Teabaggers because they do not represent me. Every other group keeps their wealth.

The "problems" you refer to are socio-economic problems mainly exhibited in the black underclass which admittedly is a disprortionate segment of our community.

They are not a consequence of merely being "black".

Will you, as a black person, own up to any particular negative habits or behavior that are caused by your race or culture?

  159. I have a question for everyone. Why is when a strong black woman who is straight-forward stands her ground in her beliefs, she is labeled bitter, beligient, mean, or any other negative adjective people can come up with and that is not only on here but that is even in the workplace?

While other women in other color groups who are strong, straight-forward, and who stand their ground too are regarded as forthright, courageous, and strong. I mean come on now.

Everyone on here that has been posting since I came here knows that I am not a feminist, and should know by now that I love all of my people, male and female, adults, teenagers, and children. So, that feminist label does not apply to me. Nevertheless, I love my black sistahs too and I might be older but I am a sistah too. That's why I'm asking y'all that question.

What is so different about black women from every other women in other color groups that they have to bear the burden of being labeled with negative adjectives while all other women in other color groups are lifted up and praised with positive adjectives?

Black women are not freaks of nature! We are women just like any other woman on this planet. We have the same physical anatomy, we have the same reproductive parts as all other women, we have the same wants and needs, etc.,and the only difference is the color of our skin.

Black men should not be putting black women down by calling them out their name, and joining in on the negative adjectives, nor should black women be doing black males like that either because we are suppose to have each other's back. We belong to the same color group family.

It was a black woman whose womb you came out of, and a black man who contributed his seed in order to make that possible. In the case of those that are interracial, either or applies to you too.

I'm sorry but I have to speak up for Laaudio because she is one of my black sistahs. And she is not mean or bitter or any of those negative adjectives. She just happens to be a highly intelligent, strong black woman who is very straight-forward, and stands her ground for what she believes in.

AB and MeandMicroscope are two other strong black woman and they too are my black sistahs. Those two have endured men calling them the "B" word and other vulgar negative words. Neither of them are weak, nor are they the "B" word. They've stood their ground on whatever it is they believe in and stood their ground against those vulgar name calling attacks too. Facts of business some of the vulgar names they've been called on here have been way over the top and out of line.

And I'll just be honest with y'all, if a man was to call me out of my name in person, when I got through with him, he'd be trying to nominate for Surgeon General. Of course he'd have to write that nomination down on paper, because he would be minus a tongue. No Lawdy, I don't play that because my parents named me at birth and the "B" word does not appear anywhere on my birth certificate, nor does it appear on any of the women on here birth certificate.

UptownSteve is a strong, intelligent brotha who stands his ground in his beliefs. No man likes it when a woman challenges their manhood and UptownSteve is no different from any other strong black man or man period in that aspect.

On the other hand, no woman likes it when a black man or any man calls them out of their name if they have any type of self-esteem about themselves.

Hey dumbass, Tip O'Neil was the Democrat Speaker of the House. Please confine your comments to those topics which you may actually know something about, if there are any. Your bigotry and ignorance are appalling.

  164. We celebrate thanksgiving, which was the mass murder of Natives with a lil smallpox in their blankets, by watching the Redskins play the Cowboys, there are at least 3 southern states with confederare emblems on them with no regard to their black popluations opinion, and 5 white kids beat a mexican in Pennsylvania only to be aquitted on CincoDe Mayo. It seems to me that the muslims are only following the American patriotic tradtion of utter insensitivity. Go Islam!!!
