*Bad timing. (Again)

"He could be anywhere on the Earth today, and he chose Alaska!"

That was our girl Sarah talking about Glenn Beckkk, who hooked up with her on September 11th to hold one of those rallies that just makes you want to keep running to the bathroom. Yes Sarah, and you two clowns could have chosen any other day to hold your rally but you chose September 11th. Wow, using a solemn day in our country's history to sell tickets and hold a crass political event for profit is beyond the pale, even for these two clowns. But we should have known that this was possible, as one of them has d0ne this before. Stay classy folks.

Finally, to a far more serious subject: (No, not the guy from Kentucky who decided to take out five people because he didn't like how his wife cooked his eggs. "One less bell to answer, one less, egg to fry..." let me stop.) There is a serious cholera epidemic in Nigeria, (over 800 died so far and 13,000 sickened) and it's spreading to neighboring countries as I write this. I know that most of you reading this do not know about this story and you probably don't care, but you should. It's really scary stuff with global implications.
And, speaking of scary, the black unemployment rate has increased at a rate of over 700% higher than it has for our fellow white citizens. Boy I sure hope that this latest education initiative from his O ness works. We need it now more than ever.

*Should have been bad.

ORT oral re-hydration therapy is the main method of treatment for cholera today, followed by ORT and antibiotics. Reasonably healthy people if kept hydrated will recover fairly well on their own. There was an outbreak of cholera in South America somewhere this year and they had the packets ORT and very few people died. Of course the very young, very old, the sick and malnourished don't recover so much. Here is a site that talks about ORT and gives various recipes to make your own ORT therapy at home should you just happen to have bad diarrhea.

Given the cheapness of the ingredients, clean water, salt and sugar at its most basic, the deaths in Nigeria are pathetic and possibly easily preventable.

Obama has already made it clear that he doesn't give a damn about Black unemployment with his 'rising tide floats all boats' comment regarding Black unemployment, Mr. Field.

So as afar as the Obama admin is concerned unless White unemployment rises to the level of Black unemployment, there is no emergency.

And LACoincidental is right about the coming water wars. As global warming becomes more apparent and disrupts weather patterns the poorest and weakest nations will suffer.

  7. That link you put up to the black unemployment information is truly staggering. It's precisely why I oppose marches and campaigns for illegal immigrants when this is the way we treat people who actually are citizens. The situation facing black Americans should be one of, if not the top policy issue in the nation. Instead it barely rates a mention. We can truly expect nothing from the current administration or from Congress.

That rising tide float all boats is the same as the Reagan trickle down economics. Looks like Blacks are in for the worse time of their lives while supporting the President who is making their lives miserable. Go figure.

When, if ever, will Blacks learn?

Field, since it is clear this administration doesn't care about Blacks, why do you and your followers continue to worship and defend Obama? Clearly, his heart feels nothing for us. Why keep hoping that he will, when the reality says otherwise? Blacks deserve what they get. They are such ignorant fools. But hey, Blacks are great helpers to non-black Muslims and Mexicans. I am sure that will get you far. LOL.

Instead, you are screwing around with Palin and Beck, which is irrelevant to the suffering of Blacks.

It's nice to see the Anons going for the mind-screw.

Palin and Beck have proven themselves time and again to being attention whores of the highest rung. Beck's national showboating extravaganza on the day of MLK Jr's famous Washington D.C. speech and now this double whammy of media whoring during the anniversary of a very tragic and nearly incomprehensible event. Blacks would just shrug these idiots off if it wasn't for the fact that these two beings were using the same emotional energy that drove perfectly fine American folk to harass, mock, ridicule, beat and even murder their fellow citizens, all because these people were not only different from them, but because they had the unmitigated gall to ask to be treated the same as other fine American folk.

The prospect of Palin and Beck's Tea Party supporters ushering in a new era of silent and unspoken Jim Crow across the country is what has Black people alarmed and concerned.

As for unemployment? People are screaming at this administration for help and this administration, like many others before it, is playing the tone-deaf role. Or at least it seems like it. One possible reason could be is if Obama decided he no longer gave a damn about what other fine American folk thought about him and rolled out a bill tailored towards lowering Black unemployment rates, such a bill will get stepped on in the House and Senate. So he's now looking at a dead bill, a wave of bitter American folk and the prospect of being a one-term President. This guy's been walking on egg shells ever since he got in the Oval Office, knowing if he swung too far for Black folk that any and all legislation he wanted pushed through would die at the hands of a cockblocking Senate and House, no matter which party was at the helm. Nothing would get done, and he knows it.

What kind of bill could be passed that would lower black unemployment specifically? A law requiring every business to fire two crackers and a Mexican and hire three negros? You don't want a rising tide to lift all boats, just the black ones! How you gonna do that, Mack?

Nothing either Palin or Beck does surprises me anymore, it's clear neither has enough contact with reality to have the tiniest sense of appropriateness. It scares me that so many Americans don't realize both those people are troubled & ought to be in therapy, not trying to lead a political movement.

Many of the poorer, weaker nations are already suffering from the weather patterns changed due to global warming, as well as the poorer, weaker members of rich, powerful nations, ex. the people living & working along our Gulf coastline.

However successful Obama's educational programs may prove, I seriously doubt they will significantly improve the employment situation while the economy continues to shed jobs. I simply can not comprehend how Obama can still be spouting the Chicago school-trickle down nonsense when even Alan Greenspan admitted it didn't work.

There ain't gonna be no more jobs which are worth anything because the "elites" decided at least as early as 1973 that this was not to be. "We" went to a "service economy", and a very large portion of the population was writtten of as "redundant to requiremwnts".
I actually read, in 1973, an article in an economics journal which discribed the disirability of a pretty much what we have now, where heads the "elites" win, "tails" everyone else loses.

The "education" question is also interesting. Especially as it concerns the "Tea Baggers".
I know quite a few of these people, and I can tell you that they are an example of what happens when some people are educated, and others are simply "schooled". "Schooling" requires reaction and response, not thought. And they are simply responding as they have been "schooled" to do. Teachers, preachers, cops, parents, officers, bosses, none of these people encourage thought, just action to a stimulus, an order. Even if it's wrong or harmful.

They are being used today as was "the mob" in the 1760's by Otis, Adams, and even Patrick Henry. They are a force which can be easily harnessed, and just as easily repudiated and/or disposed of.
I hear our local big-wigs even discussing similar problems: people home from wars who have fought and used violence, have experience, and now they are home, unhappy, and pretty much neglected and even written off.. What do we do if they decide to act on this using their experiences?

Why do they listen to Pali, Beck, Limbaugh?
Because these people talk to them, simple as that.
The "conservatives" hardly acknowledge that they exist, the "liberals", they look at them with a very beady eye, and if they engage at all, scold them for their culture, their want of education, and the fact that they didn't dry up and blow away when their "usefulness" was over, and STILL expect them to vote democrat.

That's what I see, in a nutshell. Elites of either stripe can't AFFORD to have an actually "educated" population. They might want to actually nake the system work the way it should.

  36. we may replicate africa's poverty soon!!!

The Black job market is imploding, even as the moneyed classes congratulate themselves on having “turned the corner” toward economic recovery. Alarming Black unemployment patterns indicate that “a perfect storm of racial disadvantage” has occurred. “Virtually nothing prevents the boss from acting out his prejudices and greed with impunity.” There’s nothing “post-racial” about the current crisis for Black workers.

In addition to the myriad disadvantages Black labor has endured for generations, the constant erosion of workers’ overall bargaining power with employers has reached such a nadir that, especially in the low wage sector, virtually nothing prevents the boss from acting out his prejudices and greed with impunity. Endemic racism in the United States ensures that every ratcheting up of employer power and prerogatives will redound to the special disadvantage of Black workers. For example, studies show rampant employer theft of workers’ earned wages – nearly 7 out of 10 low-wage workers report that their bosses steal from them. Not surprisingly, Blacks are robbed by bosses at three times the rate of whites.

The casino economy was (temporarily) “turned around” by the transfer of many trillions of dollars of public funds to Wall Street, mainly through the Federal Reserve. The bankster bailout was carefully captained at every critical juncture by Barack Obama, starting with his rescue of the initial bailout bill while still a candidate. Meanwhile, Black America is going down, drowning in unemployment, foreclosure, gentrification, mass incarceration and accompanying social disintegration. African Americans have the great misfortune to have invested all their political capital and energies in a president who is actively hostile to any measures that would directly address the particular Black condition, even as that condition deteriorates by the day. It’s past time that Blacks relearned a lesson: “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” We need a movement.

Absolutely false. Bush inherited a sinking economy from Clinton, and then had to deal with 9-11. Despite this, the middle of the decade was very strong economically, right up until the democrats took over congress in January of 2007. The numbers are all there, if you care to look at them.

First off, end the war in Afghanistan immediately. Funnel those billions of wasted dollars into urban revitalization programs, essentially public works programs. That's what I would have proposed instead of the stimulus package.

I'd put large sums into expanding programs like the Harlem Children's Zone into a variety of different cities.

I'd push for a decriminalization of marijuana and I'd throw my full support behind state efforts (California) to legalize the drug. That's especially important considering how many black are imprisoned and subsequently disenfranchised over non-violent drug offenses involving marijuana.

I'd push to make large sums available for prisoner release rehabilitation programs along the lines of the MPRI in Michigan.

    That's just to start.

Are you suggesting that immigration is an issue that shouldn't be discussed until the black unemployment rate is zero???

Quite frankly, you're full of guano.

LAA I really don't understand why the issues of immigration rights and black rights have to be mutually exclusive.

Steve if you read "Where Do We Go From Here" as well as Micheal Eric Dysons book that has more of Kings conversations with his colleagues and notes from speeches at SCLC conventions and the speech entitled Vietnam and Beyond" you would know that he absolutely and unequivocally would have opposed many of the policies of the US government to this day even during a black presidency.

In fact in the book I cited he criticized what the Obama presidency really represents which is a form of tokenism, which in essence is designed to shut us up.

MLK was a moral leader who lead based on priniciple and morality, he gave no ground to evil whether it had black brown yellow or white face.

Lots of dark-skinned girls named 'Widad' and 'Edwidge' are being raped daily in Haiti, they too want to immigrate and stay in America, but they are being mistreated and deported on a weekly basis when they try. Where is your human compassion for them?

Furthermore, Mell, LAC and Steve, stop trying to parallel my views and the views of other sensible blacks with the views of racist extremist whites. Like what Well stated above, this issue is much more complex than that. Since you are unable to decipher the legitimacy between the two concerns, this entire debate is sad and useless.

Steve I can't get into pretend conversations with you. Obama is the leader of the most powerful ruling class in history. It has no intention in aiding the masses. The only time it does is when its power is threatened and the masses appear to be coming to their senses.

Its why Roosevelt had to launch the New Deal and why a massive public works program was launched.

However for arguments sake, if Obama really wants to really reduce unemployment and poverty he would launch a massive public works program. Its kind of late now, but he could have helped some workers by iniating a moratorium on home foreclosures, even a moratorium on putting renters out of homes and apt. dwellings in which the owner has been foreclosed upon. He also could have assigned watchdogs to make sure that the large sum that he gave banks to help renegotiate bad mortgages,-- that were in danger of going into foreclosure --would actually have been used for the purpose intended and not put in the banks pockets.

But I really can't go there with you. The magical black guy in office who black folks assign all these good intentions to, and make excuses for (black folks can always deceive themselves by saying that the Congress wouldn't let him pass any laws that would even vaguely benefit the poor or the working class and definitely not anything that would aide black folks in any way)is simply another bourgeosie politician, nothing more and nothing less. What makes him a bit more despical however is that he doesn't even pretend to even give credence to black concerns like many of his predecessors.

And for the thousandth time I don't support either ruling class party (isn't obvious by now that they don't serve the interest of the common people)and believe like Malcolm X who said that, "both Democrats and Republicans have sold us out."

I don't want to sanitize Martin Luther King Jr.," said West, who teaches in Princeton's Center for African American Studies and is the author of "Race Matters" and 19 other books.

He later added, "I don't know about you, but I don't even mention his name without shivering and shuddering."

Speaking days before the anniversary of Obama's inauguration, West also told the mostly black audience to hold Obama's administration accountable even as they celebrate his historic presidency.

"Even with your foot on the brake, there are too many precious brothers and sisters under the bus," West said of Obama. "Where is the talk about poverty? We've got to protect him and respect him, but we've also got to correct him if the legacy of Martin Luther KIng Jr. is going to stay alive."

LAA the only person engaged in foolishness and narrowness is you at least on this day it is you. I don't blame you for running because you don't have a leg to stand on in this argument.

In real life I actually have stood shoulder to shoulder with Latins in labor disputes walked out with them as we had one anothers backs and many have stood with fellow blacks during struggles against police brutality.

You are mixing your classes of Latinos. You are confusing comfortable middle class Hispanics in Arizona, California, Florida and New Jersey with Central American immigrants who are working the worst jobs and catching hell. Many of these folks are much more politicized than even the average American they know what time it is.

They know that anti-immigrant racism is not the only card that the capitalist play in their trick deck.

And you are discounting a history of black and brown solidarity that has been purposely undermined by the system. Ever wonder how after years of struggling together blacks and Latinos in some areas became enemies. Take some time and read and you will understand that our solidarity even if it was tenuous was purposely undermined.

Study the history of the penal system in this country during the late 1950's and the 60's and how penal institutions purposely sat black against white and black against brown.

No my friend it is you that is purposely holding onto narrowness and the sad part is that it is obvious that you have more to offer than that and clearly smart enough to not fall into the anti-immigrant trap.

BTW I actually marched and met and organized and spent countless hours fighting for the rights of Haitians in Miami to enjoy the same status as the lighter Cubans when they arrived from Haiti. And am painfully aware of what is going on in Haiti (yes I even have several Haitian freinds)and even broke that down on this blog on a few occassions.

Well, I think in the past, we have. I mean, we look at the legacy of Frederick Douglass and Ida B. Wells and Ella Baker, Malcolm X and Martin King. We have, and part of the struggle now in the age of Obama is how do we keep alive the legacy of Martin King?

I know my dear brother, President Obama, has a bust of Martin King right there in the Oval Office, but the question is are is he going to be true to who that Martin Luther King, Jr., actually is? King was concerned about what? The poor. He was concerned about working people. He was concerned about quality jobs. He was concerned about quality housing. He was concerned about precious babies in Vietnam, the way we ought to be concerned about precious babies in Afghanistan and precious babies in Tel Aviv and precious babies in Gaza.

Martin King was fundamentally committed to the least of these. Of course, he was a Christian soldier for justice from the 25th chapter of Matthew.

And so more and more black folk tend to be well-adjusted to Obama’s presidency, but does that mean they’re well-adjusted to injustice? Because we don’t hear our president talking about the new Jim Crow, the prison-industrial complex.

I hadn’t seen him for two and a half weeks, and he made a beeline to me, though, brother, and he was deeply upset. He talked to me like I was a Cub Scout, and he was a pack master, you know what I mean?

I said, well, my mother and father raised me right. I respect my dear brother, but I don’t like to be demeaned and humiliated in that way, and I didn’t get a chance to respond to him. And I hope maybe at some time we can. But it was very, it was a very ugly kind of moment, it seems to me, and that disturbs me because then it raises the question for me: Does he have a double standard for black critics as opposed to white critics?

  143. The Family of Obama and the CIA

There are volumes of written material on the CIA backgrounds of George H. W. Bush and CIA-related activities by his father and children, including former President George W. Bush. Barack Obama, on the other hand, cleverly masked his own CIA connections as well as those of his mother, father, step-father, and grandmother (there is very little known about Obama’s grandfather, Stanley Armour Dunham, who was supposedly in the furniture business in Hawaii after serving in Europe during World War II). Presidents and vice presidents do not require security background checks, unlike other members of the federal government, to hold office. That job is left up to the press. In 2008, the press failed miserably in its duty to vet the man who would win the White House. With the ties of Obama’s parents to the University of Hawaii and its links to MKULTRA and ARTICHOKE, a nagging question remains: Is Barack Obama a real-life “Manchurian Candidate?”

Obama maintains that his mother and father first met in a Russian-language class at the University of Hawaii in 1959. However, a photograph has emerged of Stanley Armour welcoming Barack Obama, Sr., complete with traditional Hawaiian welcoming leis, from Kenya. Obama, Sr. was the only Kenyan student airlifted to Hawaii as part of the CIA-inspired Airlift Africa project that saw Obama and 279 other students from British eastern and southern African colonies brought to the United States for college degrees prior to their homelands gaining independence from Britain. The students were selected by Kenyan nationalist leader Tom Mboya who would later conduct surveillance for the CIA at pan-African nationalist meetings. Mboya was particularly focused on two African leaders who were seen as too close to the Sino-Soviet bloc, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Sekout Toure of Guinea.

  146. There is also the curious nature of President Obama’s Social Security Number, issued in Connecticut, a state where there is no other evidence of his ever being a resident. Adding to the mystery is a New York City address for a “male” named Stanley Ann Dunham, 235 E. 40th St Apt 8F, New York NY 10016-1747. The address is a few blocks away from the address of the Ford Foundation. Ann Dunham did work briefly in New York for the Ford Foundation.

  147. The role of the University of Hawaii in CIA psych-war operations continues to this day. The chief of research for DIA’s Defense Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Center (DCHC) Behavioral Sciences Program, Dr. Susan Brandon, who was reportedly involved in a covert program run by the American Psychological Association (APA), Rand Corporation, and the CIA to employ “enhanced interrogation” techniques, including sleep and sensory deprivation, intense pain, and extreme isolation on prisoners held at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan and other “black prisons,” received her PhD in Psychology from the University of Hawaii. Brandon also served as assistant director of Social, Behavioral, and Educational Sciences for the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the George W. Bush White House.

The CIA’s close connections to the University of Hawaii continued to the late 1970s, when the former President of the University of Hawaii from 1969 to 1974, Harlan Cleveland, was a special invited speaker at CIA headquarters on May 10, 1977. Cleveland served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 1961 to 1965 and Lyndon Johnson’s ambassador to NATO from 1965 to 1969 before taking up his position at the University of Hawaii.

A false history for BBRDW was concocted by the CIA claiming the firm had operated in Hawaii since it was a territory. President Obama is currently plagued by allegations that he has fake college and university transcripts, a phony social security number issued in Connecticut, and other padded resume items. Did Hawaii’s fake BBRDW documents portend today’s questions about Obama’s past?

BBRDW conducted its business in the heart of Honolulu’s business district, where the Bank of Hawaii was located and where Obama grandmother Madelyn Dunham ran the escrow accounts. The bank would handle much of BBRDW’s covert financial transactions.

  159. Well said...

If you were President what exactly would you do about Black unemployment???

Well, I agree those are points the correct direction. Here's the problem, its been made pretty darn clear that Congress doesn't want to move in that direction, regardless of where the President stands.

Even if we could magially transfer Dennis Kuicinich or Ralph Nader into the White House, we probably still be where we are right now, if not a few steps backwards. Short of a Hugo Chavez style pseudo-dictatorship, no President could fix all our problems in under 2 years. But, Obama is only part of the problem.

The real problem is that no matter who is in the White House, that person has to contend with a rather lethargic, impotent and self-serving Congress and an electorate that 'just ain't that into you'.

The reality is that we are the exception not the rule. Now, even if most Americans support center-left ideas, most likely voters are rather conservative. Just show pictures of angry brown people, gay people or 'dirty hippies', and (mostly white) middle America loses its collective mind and will believe and do anything to push back on the 'unwashed masses' after 'their stuff'. As someone pointed out, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin enjoy such populist power because they speak to the anxieties, both real and imagined, of middle and working class whites.

On the other hand, since the 60's, the left either retreats from politics altogether or engages in the strategically ineffective (silly marches every other week; internal bickering between different interest groups; backing do nothing incumbents or worse, know nothing outsiders). When things get tough (well, as long as I've been alive) the Right goes nuts and the Left goes home.

We can bicker till the cows come home, but most of us can be lumped together as far lefties. Me, you, Alicia Banks, Maria, Uptown Steve, Field, Mack Lyons, Maria, .... hell almost everyone who post here except for guys like No_slappz and Constructive Feedback are the 'Left' in America. The problem isn't that we disagree, its that we let our disagreements become bigger than the overall agenda itself. The problem is that we don't vote if someone doesn't met our purity test. We don't get involve and we won't figure out to fight the system effectively.

So, we shouldn't ask 'why hasn't Obama done XYZ?'. Our problems have been around a lot longer than Obama -- and if we remain inactive (or engaging in rather useless activities) they'll be around long after he's gone. The real question is "Why haven't I done more to make the change I want to see?"

    "What is the Republican alternative?"

Get government off the backs of business. Play by the rules. Let the American people get back to work."

    What a non-answer.

Government staying off the backs of business is what brought along the recent bank failures, necessitating a government bailout. So in other words, the government should let business engage in any unscrupulous activity as they please....until those businesses come running to Uncle Sam for a bandaid and a kiss.

Playing by the rules? Please. Corporate entities and the wealthy have their pick of loopholes to drive through. Which leaves the average citizen and small business owner to "play by the rules" -- rules that are set up in favor of corporate America.

As for the American people getting back to work........most would. If they had jobs. Which aren't coming anytime soon thanks to businesses that would rather cut back, then pocket the proceeds.

  174. Palin and Beck? September 11? Must have been a quiet affair.

Whatever occurred at a rally in Alaska occurred about 6 hours LATER than events on the East Coast. In other words, the events at the Beck/Palin gathering probably occurred after most of America had gone to sleep on Saturday night.

  183. Cholera Epidemic in Nigeria? Wow. What a shock.

A nation with the oil wealth of Nigeria should have a healthcare system that has wiped out diseases like cholera.

However, this is Africa. As I've said before, in Africa, EVERY YEAR, 5 Million people die from drinking unclean water.

    Five Million. Every year.

One the leading aims of public health is providing and maintaining a supply of Clean Water.

However, in much of Africa, its tough to get clean, potable water. Considering the natural resource wealth of many African nations, it is appalling that clean water is limited.

The technology for cleaning water is well known and available. But African leaders have other priorities.

As long as thugs run African nations, a huge death toll from easily overcome problems will continue.

Irony, for the most part I agree with no_slappz. Clean water is going to the next gold rush in the 3rd world.

Except for one thing -- the reason why 'thugs run African nations' is because the West made sure of that since the 'end' of colonialism. The corporations in West and now China have pretty much made sure that only crazed despotic incompetents are running nations like Nigeria and have actively worked to ensure that the people of these countries (either directly or through their elected governments) have virtually no control over their resources.
