Glossing over history for "The Gipper."

Folks, please excuse me if I don't get through this post, I am still tearing up over the touching way DeSean Jackson and a couple of other Eagles responded to that young man who was bullied recently here in Philly on The View. Fellows, that was serious field Negro behavior.

So let's talk about the man conservatives pray to every night, Ronald Reagan. This week is a big deal to all those who love the man who will soon have his image on Mount Rushmore. "The Gipper" will be 100 on Sunday, and you would think that he freed the slaves and wrote the Declaration Of Independence all by himself.

Sorry folks, but, once again, I have to be the contrarian.

Reagan the fiscal conservative? Sorry, Ronald Reagan was responsible for the largest tax hike in California's history when he became governor.

Under Reagan's watch A-merry-ca's debt climbed from 712 billion to 2 trillion, and "The Gipper" never presented a balanced budget to Congress in his eight years in office. (That,by the way, is historian Kevin Starr talking, not the field.) And yes, it was under Reagan that unemployment hit 10% for the first time since the Great depression.

Under Reagan's watch, (whether you believe the "Dark Alliance "story or not) the crack epidemic exploded in this country. And, generations later, urban A-merry-ca is still reeling from its effects.

Reagan's assault on labor unions in this country created a climate for cheap labor which led to A-merry-can jobs going abroad. Under "The Gipper" the homeless population exploded to over two million. Poverty rose by over 25%, and we can thank "The Gipper" for putting our beloved A-merry-c on a path to Third Worlds status.--- Very rich folks; very poor ones, and a weak middle class.

Issues of race and civil rights? Don't even get me started. "The Gipper" embraced the apartheid government in South Africa. (Did I mention that he launched his presidential bid from Philadelphia, Mississippi?) He kept up a constant assault on affirmative action, cut funding for social programs which disproportionately affected black folks, and he fired members of the Civil Rights Commission who did not see eye to eye with his look away policies on matters of race. (Did I mention that he launched his presidential bid from Philadelphia, Mississippi?)
Oh, and for good measure; he invaded that big bad Island of Grenada just to show those darkies down in the Windies just how tough A-merry-ca was. He opposed the Voting Right Act because he said it was "humiliating the south", (Did I mention that he launched his presidential bid from Philadelphia, Mississippi?) and he sided with Barry Goldwater in opposing the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Nice.

I won't even get into Ollie North, Iran- Contra, and his horrendous foreign policy as it relates to Lain America. (Read this link.) "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall". Yes, he tore it down, but no thanks to you. We can thank those fighters in the mountains of Afghanistan (who just so happen to be giving us hell right now) for that.

"I would rather have Roosevelt in a wheelchair than Reagan and Bush on a horse"

Jesse, try telling that to the people who worship at the altar of "The Gipper". Soon, that horse will be on Mount Rushmore, and the B movie actor with the gift of gab will be sitting right on top of it.

  4. President Obama’s endorsement of the firing of the entire faculty and staff of a Rhode Island public school is reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s crushing of the air traffic controllers union, nearly three decades ago. Back then, President Reagan made an example of a union that had supported his presidential candidacy, firing its members [11] and ultimately decertifying the union when it went on strike. The move sent a signal to the bosses in all sectors of the U.S. economy: the president – the U.S. government – is on management’s side, and unions are a considered a threat to the general economic welfare.

Obama's plans for America's classrooms are even more aggressive [13] than George Bush's policies. Obama takes Bush's No Child Left Behind scheme to its logical, blood on the floor conclusion: corporate education without the encumbrances of organized teachers. Obama's anti-union vision is more ambitious than that of the old arch-reactionary, Ronald Reagan, who destroyed a union of only 13,000 members. The American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association have combined memberships of over 4 million. They have the capacity to fight back, to make this president back off. But, like so many others who drank the Obama Kool Aid, they are in denial, refusing to believe that they backed a union-buster who is making teachers the scapegoat for America's historical failure to serve the educational needs of all its children.

    AB, "BUT

if u hate the gipper, how can u love hobama????

the gipper is hobama's idol and role model!"

Well, AB it's like this: The gipper is White and Obama is Black. That's why Field hates the gipper but loves Obama. Just because Obama idolizes Reagan and is trying his best to immulate the gipper while in office, is NOTHING to worry about.

You see, WE BLACKS must stick together even when we are being screwed by another Black. Black unity DEMANDS that we ignore the old rusty pipe rammed up our butts. It's always been that way, and always shall be.

AB, it's time you get used to the way things ARE, not the way you think they should be among us. You see, Blacks have never considered themselves worthy enough of fair treatment by other Blacks- or Whites. The difference is we complain about the Whites, like Field is doing about Reagan, but we remain SILENT about the Blacks, like Field does about Obama....

That's HOW we behave and live as Blacks. Welcome to the black race, AB! And get that CHIP off of your shoulder about Obama...he is Black, remember?

When Barack Obama started praising Ronald Reagan the candidate's apologists claimed he was just paying respect to a dead president. Now it's clear that Obama's affection for the raging old reactionary was heartfelt. With his latest pronouncements on cutting "entitlements," Obama "has proven himself to be a true believer in the Reagan revolution." The almost-president "is repeating the Reagan mantra about ‘reforming' Social Security and Medicare or cutting their rate of growth" - music to Republican ears. If Obama starts slashing at Social Security, those "progressives" that have excused his rightward lunges will bear responsibility.

Not only is Obama promising tax cuts for businesses, but he is repeating the Reagan mantra about "reforming" Social Security [5] and Medicare or cutting their rate of growth. Proposals to cut back on entitlements are dangerous and ought to be vehemently opposed. Entitlements are the only safety net that Americans have. Pension plans are available to an ever smaller group of workers, health benefits are lost when jobs are lost, and 401K accounts shrink along with the stock market.

It was disconcerting to hear all this revisionism about Reagan. His son, Ron couldn't support all that propaganda and didn't which again made him an outcast with some members of his extended family.

It gave me an extended pause to hear President Obama salute Reagan. I'm coming to the realization that sometimes we have to be careful who and what we vote for. BAR sure has a lot of data on their site about this administration. "Bamboozled", "hoodwinked" and "led astray". I heard those words in the 60's by that giant of man who was taken from us too soon.....El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz aka Malcolm X.

I also became tearful viewing the episode of The View and feeling so proud of that young man and the players who showed up to let the world and those misguided young boys know what true heroism and courage are about.

Kudos for featuring the young man, Zack Wahls, who so eloquently spoke of his two Moms in the Iowa Legislature. Good parenting is good parenting regardless of the make up of the family. May they remain strong, loving and happy!

  12. I will agree with AB here.

I don't like the way Obama is revising Reagan's legacy.

Reagan was essentially a cheerleader for white America.

Blowing off the racist and imperialist history of this country while demonizing activists and revolutionaries who sought equality and fairness for the oppressed both domestic and global.

Reagan rescued us from the grips of the worst president in the history of this country--Jimmy Carter.

Reagan destroyed liberalism, and was bi-bipartisan.

"And yes, it was under Reagan that unemployment hit 10% for the first time since the Great depression."

Unempolyment never hit 10% under Reagan. It peaked at 9.5% in 82-83.Reagan also had a net job increase of about 16 million during his 2 terms..I'm sure you just forget to mention that.

His indifference to urban problems was legendary. Reagan owed little to urban voters, big-city mayors, black or Hispanic leaders, or labor unions – the major advocates for metropolitan concerns. Early in his presidency, at a White House reception, Reagan greeted the only black member of his Cabinet, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Samuel Pierce, saying: “How are you, Mr. Mayor? I’m glad to meet you. How are things in your city?”

Reagan not only failed to recognize his own HUD Secretary, he failed to deal with the growing corruption scandal at the agency that resulted in the indictment and conviction of top Reagan administration officials for illegally targeting housing subsidies to politically connected developers. Fortunately for Reagan, the “HUD Scandal” wasn’t uncovered until he’d left office.

    more on ronny raygun

Ronald Reagan was a racist. As governor of California in the 1960s and 1970s, he joined the FBI in waging war against the rebelling African American community and those heroic advocates of Black liberation, the Black Panther Party. He was responsible for the deaths of many young Black freedom fighters. Only a worldwide movement saved his personal nemesis, Angela Davis, from unjust imprisonment. In the 1980s, his administration was responsible for CIA-sponsored drug running in Black communities to fund the contra war against Nicaragua.

Ronald Reagan hated the poor. He knew that capitalism creates armies of poor and unemployed workers, and that they constitute the greatest threat to the profit system. Over decades, first as governor of California and then as president for eight years, he missed no opportunity to wage war on the poor--their image in society as well as their material well-being. He was a prime mover in the post-civil-rights-era rollback of public perceptions of the poor as less than human. He was an early champion of the "Cadillac welfare mother" myth, and continued to use it throughout his career. Reagan blazed the trail for none other than Democratic President Bill Clinton, who smashed the federal welfare system in 1996.

All of this, and "conservatives" still loved him, largely because he said all the right buzzwords. "Morning in America", starting off his presidential campaign in the Deep South to placate and reassure the unreconstructed bigots, demonizing welfare and using the crack cocaine epidemic to jump off the War on Drugs (the only thing that succeeded in doing was swell the ranks of the Black prison population).

Conservatives love him because he talked a good game -- whenever his mental faculties were present. Big businesses loved him because they could operated as freely as they wanted with him around.

  31. Even MLK himself was no Reagan fan. Here is a excerpt from a speech he gave in 1967. I think the way MLK defines Reagan and today's right wing is even relevant today.

"Now what are some of the domestic consequences of the war in Vietnam? It has made the Great Society a myth and replaced it with a troubled and confused society. The war has strengthened domestic reaction. It has given the extreme right, the anti-labor, anti-Negro, and anti-humanistic forces a weapon of spurious patriotism to galvanize its supporters into reaching for power, right up to the White House. It hopes to use national frustration to take control and restore the America of social insecurity and power for the privileged. When a Hollywood performer, lacking distinction even as an actor can become a leading war hawk candidate for the Presidency, only the irrationalities induced by a war psychosis can explain such a melancholy turn of events."-MLK November 1967 National Labor Leadership Assembly

Yes those last few sentences are refering to Reagan.

Brother Field and al...Living through President Reagan's terms I don't recall many nobel and outstanding things he did for the people. I do recall "gas lines" and the new curse of crack and the rise in the Black families being dismantled. We had some input as well...but when employment is low the least of us survive by doing things that are left oen and maybe easy. During the times of President Reagan crac was the number one job base in many communities.

In regards to the atheletes coming forward...again too little too late. Another means to get face time on the number one media source.. I hear more about atheletes providing fund for clandestine activities than I hear about them providing for positive community goals. These atheletes need "cannon fodder" as they go up the ladder to their profession. It would be grand to hear about these "plenty millionaires" paying for the creation of 10 minority male doctors that would be required to work in the "hoods" they came from. They would not do that because then the pool of "chumps" that adore them would be lessen. This is a doabl because as we speak my family contribute to all our Black males that are being productive. I would quess that a lot of males that did not "make it" and fell along the waysisde would maybe be helped by the ones that was propelled to the top by the few that
you see in a green uniform. This may sound crazy... but the majority don't mind giving big money to atheletes from the hood... they get it back real soon. Not all... but I look at the percentages.

Now why do the POTUS envoke Ronald Wilson Satan's name? Because he knows that white bigots love the racist no matter how much he fucked up America.

Are you Blacks looking forward to the 2012 Presidential election? Will you vote for Reagan Obama again, and then complain that he cares nothing about you? I am afraid it's true.

I find it amazing that Field isn't posting about what Obama is doing instead of trying to defame Reagan. Look at it this way: we conservatives love Reagan in the same way you liberal Blacks love Obama. Surely you can understand that and respect that... instead of being racist assholes about Reagan.

So STFU and fly the planes and be gratitude to the people who are providing you with a job in the first place. Personally, I don't believe you are a pilot. You are too stupid for that.

Today’s dupes, including the congressmen whose overseas anti-American propaganda trip was allegedly financed by foreign intelligence

How ’60s Marxist radicals—Tom Hayden, Mark Rudd, Jane Fonda, Jeff Jones, Bill Ayers, and more—have suddenly reemerged as “progressives for Obama”

How Franklin Roosevelt was duped by “Uncle Joe” Stalin—and by a top adviser who may have been a Soviet agent—despite clear warnings from fellow Democrats

How John Kerry’s accusations that American soldiers committed war crimes in Vietnam may have been the product of Soviet disinformation

The many Hollywood stars who were duped, including Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Gene Kelly—and even Ronald Reagan

Soviet records that demonstrate beyond doubt the Communists’ expansionist aims and their targeting of American liberals, especially academics and the Religious Left

How liberals still defend the same Communists who trashed Democratic icons like Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Harry Truman, and JFK—and still attack the anti-Communists who tried to spare them from manipulation

  62. When Reagan arrived in the White House, he was faced with the legacy of Jimmy Carter's presidency.

On Day One of his administration, he was wrestling with mortgage interest rates that were in double digits. Rates on Treasury bonds were at similar levels.

In other words, due to Carter's fiscal and monetary idiocy, inflation had gone out of control. In 1979 inflation was over 11% and in 1980 it was over 13%.

Reagan had to hit the brakes. He did. By taking a drastic, but effective step -- raising short-term rates. It worked.

Unfortunately, because Carter the moron had repealed Regulation Q, a banking law that was meant to protect the Savings & Loan Industry, the decline of interest rates over the last six years of Reagan's administration led to the Savings & Loan Crisis.

Carter, instead passing a law permitting banks to acquire Savings & Loans, eliminated an important regulation because he believed he could keep an antiquated, unnecessary buggy-whip industry alive.

As for the increase in our national debt during the Reagan years, if you're going to jabber about debt, then you have to view it along with GDP growth. From 1982 through 1988, US GDP grew 54%.

In other words, it appears the increased federal spending contributed a lot to the economic growth of those years.

Lastly, the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989, when Bush 41 was president. It was only due to the strength of German capitalism that West Germany was able to afford reunification with East Germany.

People do love to invest something in a symbol no matter what the reality, so we must all genuflect and be silent as we stand in the presence of such icons Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagon.

No matter what monstrosities they pulled, or what enormities they set in motion, they are a "symbol". The fact that they were statists, elitists, and the only thing they cared about the hoi poloi was how they could use them for their own and their hangers-on's power.

The masks and velvet gloves worn by the state and society had been loosened every once in a while and we got a glimps of their true faces during the 50's and 60's, that there was a fist of iron inside the gloved member that urged you, but it was easilt ignored.

Reagan and his henchmen come in, yell, "Daddy's home"!, started removing the mask and gloves, and here we are.

Soooo, the upshot that we should have learned since then is that just about everything taught in gov't/civics classes in schools is just a shuck to keep the Jacquerie pretending that there is an equalibrium, and that every civil right touted, "American Value", and even citizenship and all it is said to entail is accorded at the pleasure and convenience of the "state". That's the real "Reagan Legacy".

"White" America especially seems to love, if not a king, a "man on a horse" who comes to town, kicks EVERYBOBY"S ass, and makes them pay for his horse's upkeep. They'll lick his ass and ask to kiss his foot for dessert, and think themselves privileged and blessed if he smiles while he rubs their nose in the dirt.

And I'm a "white" guy that says it.

  64. la audio,

In a comment you made to another field post, you mentioned something about the schools my kids attend.

To clear up your misunderstandings, you should know that my older son has been to both public and private schools and is about to graduate from a prestigious public school. He's been accepted at a couple of excellent colleges.

My younger son attends a middle school that is considered the second most competitive middle school in NY City. Middle school starts in 6th grade. The most competitive middle school in NY City is actually run by Hunter College and is known as Hunter College High School, even though it includes 7th through 12th grade.

Kids are only admitted to the 7th grade. Admission is based on the results of one test which applicants took on January 7th. Only kids who placed in the top 10% of standardized math, English, science, and social studies tests taken in 5th grade are invited to take the Hunter entrance exam.

Only ONE out of 15 kids passes the Hunter test. IN other words, it's tougher to get into this school than Harvard. At the other end, about 40% of Hunter graduates are accepted by Ivy League colleges.

Here are the school demographics. Asians are 47% of the student body. Whites are 41%. Everyone else is 12%.

Yes, my son was invited to take the test. He is awaiting the results.

For kids who are good students, the NY City public school system is excellent. Moreover, there's no evidence that tuition for private school -- over $30,000 a year -- is a good investment. The kids from NY City's top public high schools are accepted in the same proportions at the same colleges as the kids from the best private schools.

He was not to blame for crack, or for aids. His rising tide did lift all boats. He rallied the country from being an economic basket case with a weakened military that was being pushed by the Soviet Union around the world. By the end of his tenure the U.S. was again an economic dynamo and it was the USSR on the verge of collapse. Hundreds of millions of people were freed from communist tyrannies and the economic health of the entire world soared as a direct result of the policies of Ronald Reagan.

    Those are the important facts.

The party that believes no Black can think on his own and do what is good for he, family and country (although with reading all the usual shit about Uncle Tom Race Traitors on here they probably are right about that, right Mack)
The party that believes no Black person can make it without some superior white (aren’t whites in charge of everything?) providing knowledge, programs, guidance, direction, money, money and more money. How embarrassing and belittling.

Ever have a friend that was good at talking shit. He was useless contributed nothing; someone always had to pay for him wherever the group went. He covered this with divide and conquer, always saying one guy was talking shit about another, how everyone was mistreating him, how things sucked and life was so unfair, never giving a shit about anyone’s problems but his own, but HE was your friend until the day everyone caught on and said fuck this, take care of yourself, give the drama to someone else's mama. We aren't responsible for your life, your actions or your happiness.

Are you that guy? Then know, the Fuck this shit day has arrived.

When you learn to be openly honest and find positive things along with the things you don’t like then I am all ears. Until then you hate everything and everyone so what’s the point of listening to you. You’re like an angry little person who hates themselves so much all they know is jealousy, anger, hatred and constantly shit on everything while being whiny little people who look for a reason to fly off the handle with even the most superficial imagined slight. You can keep that. No matter how hard you wish, there ARE some very good things in this world even though no one has ever been perfect and until you become perfect remember judge not lest you be judged and you best make sure you don’t bitch when you are judged based on your actions and results. However, Before Reagan's first term had ended, it was understood that AIDS was spread through anal and oral homosexual activity.

Hence, it was within the power of every individual to avoid infection.

Meanwhile, as of today, 30 years after AIDS was detected, there is no cure and no vaccine. To pretend that limited government interest in this health issue in the early 1980s has stood in the way of a cure or a vaccine is pure dopiness.

Meanwhile, AIDS infections in the US are infrequent these days. But in almost every African nation the infection rate and the subsequent devastation is staggering.

Despite all we know about preventing and avoiding AIDS, the message has failed to reachAfricans, which is one of many reasons that lead non-Africans to conclude the continent is populated by dummies.

Well, there are only a couple of black billionaires, and the only black billionaires live in the US. But there are a lot of black millionaires.

If we add up the number of black athletes with multi-million-dollar contracts and the number of big-money black entertainers, how many black millionaires are there?

    Thousands and thousands.

  92. ”To clear up your misunderstandings, you should know that my older son has been to both public and private schools and is about to graduate from a prestigious public school. He's been accepted at a couple of excellent colleges.

There was no misunderstanding. You once stated that your white children attended a public grade school in NY with predominantly black children.

Your underlining [racist] motive for bringing that up was to tie-in the element of thievery in the school, and in which your children were victims. And while trying not to sound like the racist you are, yet suddenly pragmatic, you declared that the culprits were likely black students because the school was “predominately black”. You also stressed that the white student body which was of a lower percentile, had the highest grades as compared. I’m paraphrasing, but those were your words.

For me, this wasn’t about sending children to private schools. Why would an absurdly racist white man who comforts himself in being so well versed in the ills and failures of the “black race” subject his white children to such a learning environment, and to a predominantly black school district in NY if he could supposedly help it? Like I said, you are not fooling anyone.

”Kids are only admitted to the 7th grade. Admission is based on the results of one test which applicants took on January 7th. Only kids who placed in the top 10% of standardized math, English, science, and social studies tests taken in 5th grade are invited to take the Hunter entrance exam.

So in other words, your white children were hand picked based on that school’s initial low grading curve. I'm not impressed. And thanks to under achieving “black” students who most likely didn’t turn in homework, work assignments, nor applied themselves due to a myriad of personal issues. If they had applied themselves, they would have presented stronger competition and raised that grading curve that you are so shamelessly boasting about. In fact, if black students who are categorized as underachievers could realize they have the potential to achieve just like anyone else, they too would aim high – and in droves.

But we all know racist and inferior, low level white fathers like yourself are ghastly afraid of such things happening regardless. The racial achievement disparities in the American educational system is the only hope ticket that racist like you have to appease your own parental failures and underachievements, even though you grew up as privileged white men in this country.

Slappz, you are a grown man holding pride in your child's fortunate lopsided educational achievements in a low level inner city school district. Comical. You shouldn’t do that in public. And I still don’t believe you in regards to whatever high level middle/high schools you claim that your children are now supposedly attending. I suspect after you had that slip of tongue exposing the earlier school district, you panicked and quickly hallucinated these prevailing achievements. As judge Judy would say, you get an L for loser.

” Only ONE out of 15 kids passes the Hunter test... Yes, my son was invited to take the test. He is awaiting the results.

I’m sure he’ll text or email you when he gets the results, something tells me that you don’t live in the same household.

Hey Mell, Slappy is too comical. He’s always whining about underachieving black people, black problems, and blacks on welfare etc. etc. But he does it on a blog full of black readers who likely has high achieving black children, and/or who are likely paying out more taxes than he has ever paid in his life.

It's obvious what segment of the black population he has the real issues with and why.

here is what the Obama administration thinks it must do, and there is what it refuses to use its power to actually change. The odds of comprehensive immigration reform happening this or last year were nil. And still the Obama administration pressed forward with ever more enforcement and expansion of Secure Communities, the new program that allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to peer into the databases of local precincts of anyone who’s detained, fingerprinted, or arrested.

The Obama administration has steadfastly refused to consider administrative options, which are completely within the president’s power, to halt the mass deportations. According to Napolitano, among the deported have been people who were convicted of violent crimes. They make up a tiny percentage of the people who are ejected from the country every year. The majority have been convicted of no crime whatsoever. Those who did have criminal record had been found guilty of petty crimes and traffic violations.

It is human nature to fashion physical images of gods. All gods are ideally universal spirits who have no physical bodies. Yet, we are compelled to assign our gods faces, genders, and races. Why are some Africans the only people who worship gods who look NOTHING like them? Because white supremacy is an ancient and global reality. A reality that has given them eternal white gods, in the mirror images of their demonic white oppressors.

Why do racist whites, who would never worship in churches where there are black images of Jesus, demand that Africans worship in churches where images of Jesus are white like them? Why do they deny that Jerusalem is in Africa? Why do they deny that Jesus looked more like Jimi Hendrix than David Lee Roth? Ancient catholic images of Jesus depict a black skinned African with an afro. Even today, the Vatican houses images of a very Black Madonna and Christ child.

The most despised and pathetic character in Sankofa is a mulatto overseer named Joe. He is devoutly religious, adores his masters and hates black women. Joe lives on also...in the spirits of O. The global elitism of the New World Order will tax virtually every joy in life anew. All costly simple pleasures will be restricted to those who can afford them. All abject misery will be the mainstays of life for most persons who will never be able to afford education or wealth ever again.

The public school system in NY City is 35% black, 35% hispanic, 14% asian, 14% white and 2% other. Until kids begin attending competitive middle school which require passing an entrance exam, almost every school has a high percentage of black and hispanic students.

Meanwhile, the Gifted Program, through competitive testing open to ALL kids, includes about 7% of all students. The program has two parts. Regular Gifted and Top of the Heap Gifted -- the CIG Program.

For operational reasons, these programs are located in schools that are found in every part of the city. However, because the programs are small, there are not enough kids in the programs to fill entire grade schools in any neighborhood. Thus, the Gifted Program makes use of the old liberal idea of "bussing".

As it happens, my younger son's previous school is in the middle of a 99% Jewish neighborhood within Flatbush. White and Jewish for many blocks in every direction.

The school has an excellent reputation, but most of the neighborhood residents send their kids to yeshivas. Thus, there is space in this school for kids from other neighborhoods.

Therefore many black and hispanic parents from outside the area make an effort to get their kids enrolled. That's what accounts for the high black and hispanicstudent population.

Meanwhile, the CIG Progam in which my son was enrolled was excellent and had a lot to do with why he scored in the top 10% of all NY City 5th graders on the standardized tests used for deciding which kids are invited to take the Hunter test.

By the way, one of the qualifying tests given to the 5th graders is known by as the OLSAT. OLSAT is a nationally recognized testing program. The tests are age/grade appropriate, SAT-like exams.

As governors across the country prepare their budget proposals for the coming year, they continue to face a daunting fiscal challenge. The worst recession since the 1930s has caused the steepest decline in state tax receipts on record. State tax collections, adjusted for inflation, are now 12 percent below pre-recession levels,[1] while the need for state-funded services has not declined. As a result, even after making very deep spending cuts over the last several years, states continue to face large budget gaps.
To date some 44 states and the District of Columbia are projecting budget shortfalls for fiscal year 2012, which begins July 1, 2011 in most states. These come on top of the large shortfalls that states closed in fiscal years 2009 through 2011. States will continue to struggle to find the revenue needed to support critical public services for a number of years, threatening hundreds of thousands of jobs.
A survey of state fiscal conditions suggests that:
2012 is shaping up as states’ most difficult budget year on record. Thus far some 44 states and the District of Columbia are projecting budget shortfalls totaling $125 billion for fiscal year 2012. While states are anticipating significant shortfalls in the coming year, their options for addressing those shortfalls are dwindling. Federal assistance for states, which has been enormously helpful in allowing states to avert some of the most harmful potential budget cuts, will be largely gone by the end of fiscal year 2011, the current fiscal year. Nearly one-half of the nation’s governors have now released their budget proposals for fiscal year 2012, and their proposals reflect this grim fiscal reality. A number of these proposals contain deep cuts to state services on top of the substantial cuts that states have already made since the start of the recession.

In a shocking new interview, Donald Trump has gone farther than he ever has before in discussing a potential economic collapse in America. Using phrases such as “you’re going to pay $25 for a loaf of bread pretty soon” and “we could end up being another Egypt”, Trump explained to Newsmax that he is incredibly concerned about the direction our economy is headed. Whatever you may think of Donald Trump on a personal level, it is undeniable that he has been extremely successful in business. As one of the most prominent businessmen in America, he is absolutely horrified about what is happening to this nation. In fact, he is so disturbed about the direction that this country is heading that he is seriously considering running for president in 2012. But whether he decides to run in 2012 or not, what Trump is now saying about the U.S. economy should be a huge wake up call for all of us.

About 6 million Americans receiving food stamps report they have no other income, according to an analysis of state data collected by The New York Times. In declarations that states verify and the federal government audits, they described themselves as unemployed and receiving no cash aid - no welfare, no unemployment insurance, and no pensions, child support or disability pay.

Their numbers were rising before the recession as tougher welfare laws made it harder for poor people to get cash aid, but they have soared by about 50 percent over the past two years. About one in 50 Americans now lives in a household with a reported income that consists of nothing but a food stamp card.

That aside, the other part of your sentence seems to be a fabrication that seems common to blacks.

If you were referring to school budgets and how the cost of educating minority kids attending schools in minority neighborhoods is much higher, then you have a point. Schools in crumby neighborhoods have to spend a lot of extra cash on remedial efforts. This problem arises well before high school and is a function of the lives of these students outside the classroom.

His casinos have ALL filed for bankruptcy at least once. His Trump Air Shuttle failed. His bankers repossessed his yacht and he was forced by the same bankers to sell the Plaza Hotel.

His successes occurred in the real estate business, where he managed the construction of major condominium projects and then sold the units. The only remaining Trump influence is his name on the door.

Aside from that, he owns a piece of the Grand Hyatt hotel on 42nd St in Manhattan.

He's attempted some good stuff, and succeeded with some of it, but he's got some massive failures on his record. However, he avoided much of the fallout by conducting everything at arm's length with Other People's Money.

He hoses investors whenever possible. Moreover, his economic pronoucements are almost always just plain silly.

That’s definitely a beyond left and right conclusion! What became clear while writing this book is that the decline of the middle class was no accident. It was the result of tricks and traps. Tricks in the ways we financed our homes. Traps in the ways credit card companies used hidden fees and fine print and skyrocketing interest rates to get their hands on our money, driving more and more people into debt. So, yes, the game is rigged. Our financial system has become a bad carnival game where the rich always get the grand prize and the average American walks away empty-handed. We've gone from an economy where we make things to an economy where we make things up: default credit swaps, derivatives, CDOs and the like have turned Wall Street into a casino. Actually, a casino is fairer: at least you know the odds going in. And for me, the answer to the question of how we got here has to start in Washington, where special interests run the show--and where lobbyists outnumber elected officials 26 to 1. Unfortunately, there are no lobbyists for the American Dream. Now, I know you played a lobbyist on HBO ... so I'm curious what your take on the role special interests now play in Washington. For me, this is one of those questions that is beyond the right vs. left framing the media loves to app
*Starred Review* Could the U.S. be on the brink of becoming a Third World nation? Syndicated columnist Huffington argues that overspending on war at the expense of domestic issues and the alarming decline of the middle class are troubling signals that the U.S. is losing its economic, political, and social stability—a stability that has always been maintained by the middle class. She pinpoints the beginning of the decline to the Reagan era, with its denigration of a government safety net. But she is nonpartisan in assigning responsibility to George W. Bush and Bill Clinton for supporting monied interests over those of the middle class; she then takes aim at Obama for expending more money to bail out Wall Street than Main Street. She also points to loss of manufacturing jobs, outsourcing, and globalization, all with emphasis on corporate profits at the expense of workers. Although the U.S. has faced similarly fearful times during the late 1800s and the Great Depression, the middle class was not threatened, as it is today. She offers possible solutions for the decline, including creating jobs to rebuild national infrastructure, reforms in home and credit lending, and tighter restrictions on Wall Street. An engaging analysis of troubling economic and political trends. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The Huffington Post founder is sure to get some media traction with her assertion that the American Dream is an outdated concept

  124. la audio, you wrote:

So in other words, your white children were hand picked based on that school’s initial low grading curve.

Hardly. The qualifying tests are multiple-choice tests graded in the same way as SATs and other tests where a circle on an answer sheet is marked.

And thanks to under achieving “black” students who most likely didn’t turn in homework, work assignments, nor applied themselves due to a myriad of personal issues.

Admission to the competitive public schools in NY City depend on two factors -- intelligence and achievement. Unless a smart kid has learned enough to answer questions correctly, he's not getting accepted. IQ alone is not enough.

If they had applied themselves, they would have presented stronger competition and raised that grading curve that you are so shamelessly boasting about.

You can offer whatever excuse you want, but the black and hispanic kids who fared poorly on these exams did so for the same reasons plenty of white kids fared poorly -- they are not smart enough nor knowledgeable enough to get a qualifying score.

In fact, if black students who are categorized as underachievers could realize they have the potential to achieve just like anyone else, they too would aim high – and in droves.

Really? The mantra in public schools has become "Self Esteem". Every day almost every kid is told he possesses an inner genius and all he has to do is let his genius run free. Okay. We're all waiting.

Your first problem is your failure to accept and understand that whites would like nothing more than to see black kids excel in school. You're out of your mind if you think black academic success is disturbing to whites.

What's disturbing is the stunning LACK of academic success, despite the expenditure of billions and billions of extra dollars in black and hispanic schools

As I've said, here in NY City, per-school, per-student expenditures at black/hispanic schools are 30% HIGHER than expenditures at predominantly white/asian schools.

But not all of the White House policies are sitting well with Buffett. He blasted the Obama stimulus plan for having too many earmarks and not being used to help the economy broadly. He criticized the proposed tax on TARP fund-receiving banks, whether or not they have paid back the taxpayers.

He said it wasn’t fair that Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs Group, for example, have to keep paying for TARP even though they were forced to take the money and have already paid it back with interest to the government. (Buffett, of course, owns large stakes in those two banks.)

“If you’re really looking for the people who benefit from the government losses you’d have to look at Fannie or Freddie. Are you going to tax the member of Congress who ran Freddie and Frannie,” he said. “….I just think a tax that’s enacted with the idea that the headlines will be appealing and that a certain amount of vengeance will be achieved. I don’t think that’s the greatest form of tax policy.”

    so much for buffet's wisdom:

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett stood next to Sen. Barack Obama at a country club fundraiser here Wednesday evening, praising the Illinois Democrat and calling for a federal tax system that would charge the rich more.

Buffett, who can move markets with a few syllables and is increasingly trying to do the same in politics, introduced the presidential hopeful and his wife, Michelle, at an event that attracted about 200 people inside a wood-trimmed clubhouse.

"He's not only a leader, but he can lead us to the right place," said Buffett, who also told a racy joke and made a few off-hand remarks about the sagging stock market.

Real leaders don't pander, they do what is best for everyone. That's why Reagan is remembered as a great President, and why Obama will be remembered as a union lackey, Wall Street crony, and minority payoff disaster.

So as long as Black people keep voting 95% democrat, they won't have to worry about Republicans trying to pander to them. Why bother?

And I see you are well trained enough to bark when you hear that dog whistle blowing "states rights". It's been an effective tactic of the left to delegitmize the concept of states rights by forever pointing out that segregationists cited the concept to fight desegregation. I suppose fire hoses are racist too, and can't be used to put out fires because Bull Connor used them on Civil Rights protesters.

States rights are attacked because the statists desire to elimnate the sovereignty of the states and replace the Republic with a monolithic federal entitity. There is no greater threat to American freedoms than an all powerful federal government, and Reagan was right to try to restore the powers that rightfully belong with the states. The fight goes on.

To the racist inferior grammar auditor: I'm not impressed by your grammar scrutiny. There are many underpaid people who are required to correct other people's grammar and spelling, and they usually do it for the ones who make triple plus above their salaries.

I should also tell you, some of us negros actually grew up speaking/writing more than one language. I'll ink out your a red pen at any given day. I tend to reverse the placement of adjectives and nouns in the English sentence. Shoot, I also live in a VERY broken English speaking community, so I sometimes tend to leave out the past tense in my verbs when I speak or write English outside the workplace.

So... until you step up your game as a parent, or come to terms with your failures as white person in America, all the grammar you correct on this blog will not make that reality go away. While you're being mad at black people, correcting grammar, and having Crunch'n Munch for dinner in front your second-hand computer, I'll be eating sesame salmon Sushi and a lobster tail.

  135. shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

General Electric Co. Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt, recently picked by President Barack Obama to head a White House competitiveness council, will speak this weekend at two events in California celebrating Mr. Reagan, who served for years as a GE spokesman.

Mr. Reagan's sons, Michael and Ron have published very different books on their father, the first a political treatise and the second a memoir that delves into the aloofness and inscrutability of the private Reagan.

"You may think you know Ronald Reagan, or at least the 90% or so that was so long and frequently on public display," writes the 52-year-old Ron. "However, even to those of us who were closest to him, that hidden 10% remains a considerable mystery."

Mr. Obama has also jumped in, heaping praise on the 40th president as a communicator who gave the country a jolt of optimism during gloomy times. "There is no denying his leadership in the world, or his gift for communicating his vision for America," the president wrote of Mr. Reagan recently.

Mr. Obama read a biography of Mr. Reagan during his Christmas vacation. Like the 40th president, the 44th faces the challenge of bouncing back from a bruising midterm election during difficult economic times.

Especially, since it wouldn't fit into his/her narrow-minded pre-civil war way of thinking. Therefore, he rejects it and uses his rejection for a crutch. Sad and sickening!

She had the audacity to call me a liar on a subject I never lied about, so I banned her worthless ass. But, her worthless ass still shows up every now and again to add some comment about Medicare in New York or that a Single Payer system would cost more than our current insurance controlled system. I am pretty sure the worthless bitch works in health insurance, so this is no surprise. But for the kettle to call the pot black is an amazing amount of hypocricy.

The problem is that there is no documented proof she shares, just the same old horseshit from a lying worthless bitch.

The fact is that the basic Medicare premium for New Yorkers is going to radically go up… to a whole $110.50/month. Yes, No-Slappz, you worthless, lying scumbag, bitch. I just left a plan that cost me and my family over $23K/year (BCBS). My premiums were $1,173/month (and this is not out of line with many others that I have spoken to). Add whatever out of pocket costs you can imagine to your imaginary lies and there is still no freaking way Medicare costs more than any insurance plan in this country.

You are a damned liar. And a bitch. (Not to mention your undeniable racism)

Single Payer, Not-for-profit healthcare, after removing the plight of the scumbag’s employer, health insurance companies, is the ONLY viable way to fix our healthcare system. Don’t let the likes of these fools such as No_Slappz lie to you.

  144. I hate to through ice water on the liberal parade of "Obama sold us out for Saint Ronnie" but remember two things:

    1. Its possible to admire some qualities of an otherwise evil person or one involved in unsavory activity. I admire the business acumen of drug kingpins as a future B-School student. However, I by no means support unrepentant capitalism, gang violence or the poisoning of desperate people for fun and profit. So, its possible that Obama would like to be able to communicate his ideas and get everyone to sign on like Reagan. It doesn't necessarily mean that he thinks the man's policies were all that great.

    2. Obama said what he said because, as proof by our right wing compatriots who insist on posting Limbaugh/Drudge nonsense on this and other message boards and Facebook - America in general, and white Americans in particular can't handle the truth. If Obama would not have shown up, or worse go on the stage and went the laundry list of horrors, errors and misdeeds committed by Reagan and his wingnut disciples -- he wouldn't just be less popular than sewage run-off by tonight, the Tea Party would drafting impeachment charges tomorrow night.

Yeah, it sucks that Obama, or anyone else with a speck of honesty and intelligence has to placate to this despicable old man that the Right Wing adores more than Jesus. But, unless Americans learn to put two and two together, you'll continue to have President Reagan mentioned in the same breath as FDR, Washington and Lincoln.

Since it's only an ongoing movement to deify him, I doubt it will come to pass. I am a native Californian and lived there while he was governor. He was a terrible governor. He destoryed the social outreach programs, for starters. But, here's a response to another web site, answerbag.com that is worth reading, no matter the hyperbole:

by kedar on May 9th, 2008

    "Absolutely Not!

Ronald Reagan brought with him the beginnings of the end of civility in modern politics -- It was Reagan who began the trend of making 'liberal' a bad word, and it was Reagan who created the now-snowballing legacy of the freeloader culture: Taxes can always be cut, government can always can be shrunk, and there's never any need to worry about who pays the bills--someone will take care of that later -- George Walker Bush carries on Reagan's tradition, letting others take the fall for your crimes.

Sadder still, Reagan turned a deaf ear to the scourge of AIDS -- Some reports show that as many as 60,000 people died between the discovery of the disease in 1981 and when Reagan first made public mention of it in 1987.

Reagan's crimes are many and started well before he was President when he and Bush Sr. paid the Iranian's to not release the hostages in order to prevent the re-election of Jimmy Carter in 1980, not mention his reign of stupidity as Governor of California -- The hostages were released as promised as Reagan was sworn into office. Reagan then secretly sold chemical & biological weapons to Iraq and told CIA buddy Saddam Hussein to step up bombing of Iran while still selling weapons to Iran in a war that claimed an estimated one million victims -- The criminal activities in the Mid East stretched around the world to Central America in the spectacle that came to be known as Iran-Contra.

America's worst financial disaster since the Great Depression occured under Reagan with the collapse of the Savings & Loan system. Nearly $500 billion was looted from thousands of Savings & Loans by a criminal ring that included the Mafia, CIA and the Bush family -- Neil Bush was involved in the collapse of Silverado Savings & Loan but never served any jail time. By the time the Federal government and elite is done milking the scam further, US taxpayers will have paid well over a trillion dollars.

The full extent of Reagan's crimes may never be known because George W. Bush issued an executive order which countermands the 1978 Presidential Records Act and prevents the release of 68,000 pages of Reagan era documents. Given that Reagan lacked the intelligence to carry out some of the more elaborate crimes, the records are likely to shed light on the true role of the Bush crime family."
