There is a sign over the free- weights in my gym that says, "If you can't put it down, don't pick it up." The good governor of Wisconsin has picked up some very heavy weights and now he has a problem. (I mean when the "Cheese Heads" start "bashing" you in Wisconsin, if you are that state's governor; that is not a good thing.)
Governor Scott Walker is looking worse ever day. He has dug himself in such a deep hole that it's hard to see him getting out of this one. He has exposed himself to be nothing more than a political ideologue and not a practical politician who cares about the well being of the people of Wisconsin. It's so bad that even his fellow wingnut governors are backing away from him.
The unions have offered to give a little, but Walker won't move. He has become the darling of the wingnut and FOX News crowd, and they are telling him to dig in and fight the good fight. He claims this is about balancing the state's budget, but who is he kidding? This is about cutting off a major source of money for the dumbocrats. Wisconsin is "Ground Zero".
The wingnuts hope to break unions one state at a time, and they were hoping that the dominoes would start falling with the Badger state. They haven't. Not yet. Of course getting punked by a left wing blogger and showing the country what a fraud you are doesn't help your cause.
"UPDATE, 11:54 a.m.: In a key detail, Walker reveals that he is, in effect, laying a trap for Wisconsin Dems. He says he is mulling inviting the Senate and Assembly Dem and GOP leaders to sit down and talk, but only if all the missing Senate Dems return to work. Then, tellingly, he reveals that the real game plan here is that if they do return, Republicans might be able to use a procedural move to move forward with their proposal. "If they're actually in session for that day and they take a recess, this 19 Senate Republicans could then go into action and they'd have a quorum because they started out that way," he says. "If you heard that I was going to talk to them that would be the only reason why." Then the fake Koch says this: "Bring a baseball bat. That's what I'd do." Walker doesn't bat an eye, and responds: "I have one in my office, you'd be happy with that. I've got a slugger with my name on it."
12:09 p.m.: Another key exchange: FAKE KOCH: What we were thinking about the crowds was, planting some troublemakers. WALKER: We thought about that. My only gut reaction to that would be, right now, the lawmakers I talk to have just completely had it with them. The public is not really fond of this. The teachers union did some polling and focus groups... It's unclear what Walker means when he says he "thought" about planting some troublemakers, but it seems fair to ask him for clarification."
Wow! So this wingnut governor takes (what he thinks is) a call from a fat- cat wingnut donor but won't negotiate with his fellow citizens from his own state? I guess money talks and all that other stuff walks in Wisconsin as well.
FN, just sent you an email with some good news. Check it:)
ReplyDeleteMR - what's going on girl?! Long time no see. How's the job hunt.
ReplyDeleteField - the punking of governor Walker is a long time coming. He just outed himself as a paid for shill of the anti-union paymasters, the Koch Boys (given the double entendre - I'm now going to refer to them as such. The slimeballs are doing as much damage to working people as a block boy does to his neighborhood.)
LAC, what would you cut?
ReplyDeleteField, thanks for the laugh. Such 'expertise'. And what a craven bootlicker Governor Weasel is. How will Fox cover their golden boy now?

This is about cutting off a major source of money for the dumbocrats
ReplyDeleteYou mean the Government Taxpayer funded public servants are taking things from democrats and then contributing back to them? Isn't this unethical dishonest? Don't expect taxpayers to bail out the failing pension plans when they are sending all funds to democratic campaigns.
Your post is amazing you sound like a totally dishonest shill for huffington post. None of this is even remotely accurate and you know it. Hey, I heard the fleebaggers wont be able to get checks without actually going to pick them up and working, now that is unfair, expecting liberals on the taxpayer dole to actually earn their money!!
Walker is talking about planting troublemakers? You mean taking a page from the liberal playbook? Yes, bus them in, pick up homeless on the street to picket. Union goons and hateful irresponsible gimme, gimme, lefty whackjobs.
Can't help but imagine Walker with aides..."Well, that went well didn't it"...then on to damage control
ReplyDeleteEmailing it in tonight fields? Let me know when you got something that Democrats haven't done before.
ReplyDeleteUntil than, sleep tight.Don't let the bed bugs bite.
Anon - please, no comments for the peanut gallery.
ReplyDeleteMold - the issue with Walker isn't that the union won't cut a deal. Walker wants to, for all intent and purpose -- dismantle unions.
But to your direct question, at the state level, IDK. I'd have to exam each and every budget. But for WI, after reading the news, I'd rescind the WI tax cuts for corporations. Sorry, but Wisconsin shouldn't be cutting tax breaks for billionaires and telling teachers to suck a lemon.
At the federal -- its really easy. Make the rich pay their fair share by rolling back the Bush/Obama Cave-in tax cuts. I'd also eliminate oil subsidies and institute a 14% corporate windfall tax -- you make over $100 M in profits and bonuses, plan to fork over 14M to Uncle Sam.
I'd also demand (not ask DEMAND) the financial industry free up money for small businesses and correct bad loans or plan to get a 30% corporate profit levee.
(I'd also throw every single one of these corporate fat cat bankers in the same hardcore, Super Max, man-rape prison that my cousins are spending the next 10-20 years residing.)
Finally, I'd cut the military by 2/3 over 5 years. You heard me, across the board 2/3 cut. Who do we plan to fight with our military budget? The armies of Middle Earth? Godzilla, King Kong and other residents of Monster Island? Is Aquaman planning to invade the surface world? Is the Mole Man from the Fanstatic Four bring his Lava Monster?
Simply, we waste a lot of money or warmongering and empire - and we're going broke because of it.
Absorb the Coast Guard into the Navy and the Air Force back into Army (where it originally was). End both wars and close all of military bases. Eliminate the DOHS and repeal the Patriot Act (does the government need to waste money spying on my library books). Fully fund our obligations to the UN (its a lot cheaper to let the UN handle problems, or even better let nations handle their own BS first rather than playing the world cop.) Tell all those corporate fat cats that they better find some non-violent uses for their technology or prepare to have uncle Sam to collect on any outstanding bills.
See, if I were President and had a posse of Field Negroes in the Congress, I'd bring the ruckus. Or get shot.
Field,
ReplyDeleteIn my gym it says "your mother isn't here, you will have to pick up after yourself"
First ACORN now the Unions are on the hit list.
Wingnuts fail to understand two things. First, unions are voluntary associations. Most unions have a PAC, which again is voluntary. If you support the position of your union and whom they support in an election you give money, if you don't you don't give. The union is there to protect the members' interests. Second, unions exist because a majority of the workers want to be represented by a union. If a majority says we don't like our particular union there is a vote to dissolve it or get different representation. All of this is democracy in action. All of this Fox news driven talk of big unions is nonsense. If your local and national leaders don't do what the majority sent them to do you vote to recall those leaders. Obviously if there is no recall the members agree with whom the union supports. Of course most unions and working people support Democrats. The GOP has shown a willingness to outsource jobs and give tax breaks to corporations that execute outsourcing. I saw this first hand when senators Obama and Durbin fought against a bill, supported by Republicans, that would outsource thousands of airline jobs. It made sense for us as an organization to support these men and others like them because they agreed with our position on the issues. In the 2008 presidential questionaire Obama agreed with over 90% of our positions while McCain refused to answer the questions so where do you think our support should go? For more info google "Open Skies Agreement". Bush supported this and told us he'd give us money to go to a community college to retrain for a new career. Does that sound good to you? Leave a job you love and get a good salary and go fix air conditioners? (Not that there's anything wrong with AC repair but you get the drift). That didn't sound appealing to me or thousands of other airline employees.
ReplyDeleteSPC, I am always willing to oblige you wingnuts. :)

Field, been there done that. Ran twice, once in 2001 as a alderman and once in 2004. In '04, I ran for Voter Registrar and was focused on bringing change to our voting process. Black folks are systematically disenfranchised throughout the country. My goal was to start small.
But, Negroes in my hometown rather vote in two old white ladies to sit in an office and do next to nothing than a brother who was going to spark change. No hate and God bless them. It is what is.
That being said, my girl wants me to run for city council. Maybe in the future, when I finish my degrees and can find my way around LA without my GPS. ;-)
What LA Confidential said!
ReplyDeleteMSNBC has played Gov.Walker's prank call all evening. His lackeys were so eager to put through the call from who THEY THOUGHT was Walker's billionaire corporate backer David Koch that they didn't check to see if it was legit. Perhaps sabotage by a secret union supporter??
I hope this is the beginning of the end of all those Midwest GOP gov's union busting activities.
PilotX: "All of this is democracy in action."
ReplyDeleteAs was the 2010 election, but apparently the Wisconsin public unions don't want democracy for people outside the union.
I'm glad your private sector union fought and won to keep good jobs for Americans. We need more of that.
But public union jobs can't be outsourced to other countries. If their bosses (the taxpayers) decide they need to contribute a little more to their benefits, then that's entirely reasonable.
Truth be told, as government is the enforcer of labor laws, there is no need for collective bargaining for government employees.
It is an incestuous relationship. The unions give huge sums to democrats, who give huge pay raises and lavish benefits and pensions to union members, who turn around and give huge sums to democrats, who expropriate larger and larger chunks of the economy into the government, hiring more and more public workers, who give more money and votes to democrats. It's graft on an epic scale, and it's got to stop. The private sector is already staggering under the weight of government expenditures.
Field,
ReplyDeleteWe'll see if people have finally learned their lesson. Republicans damaged this country to the point that it'll take a generation to get it back together. Two years after voting them out of power, people vote them right back in. Instead of coming in humbled the Repuplicans come in with the same attitude. 'This is what I'm doing, I don't give a F---what you think'
I don't belong to either party.
I'm a Independent, but I can't see myself voting for a Republican because they've gone way too far to the right.
LACoincidental said..."But, Negroes in my hometown rather vote in two old white ladies to sit in an office and do next to nothing than a brother who was going to spark change. No hate and God bless them. It is what is."
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was your personality. Just sayin'.
But hey, just because you couldn't win a race for Voter Registrar doesn't mean you can't make a serious run at being President. Those ideas you floated will resonate with a certain "subset" of the population, and Dennis Kucinich won't be around forever.
But if you want to run for office in LA, you'd better change your name, maybe "Chavez".
Cheezer Chavez.
To paraphrase Dave Chapelle, Scott Walker makes Richard Nixon look like Malcolm X.
ReplyDeleteHe was ready to use goons to disrupt rallies with School Teachers and children there. We all know that the Republican Party do kill little white girls born on 9/11. The Governor wanted to go Kent State on HIS people. Now what's really scarry is that him and Kasich compared notes.
What up Field? I agree with your assessment about Wisconsin being ground zero. But its about more than cutting off Democratic contributions, this is about good old plain union busting.
ReplyDeleteAnd quiet as its kept the Dems aren't totally opposed to the idea either. Remember they are still twiddle lee dum.
LAC I feel you. Now you know you sound like me with those cuts. I have been laughed off the thread before when I suggested taxing corporate profits over a certain amount and I too suggested cutting the defense budget in half.
And of course you have to end the foreign interventions.

ReplyDelete" The private sector is already staggering under the weight of government expenditure"
You are right, but the private sector workers are suffering from private sector privateers who refuse and lobby to keep from paying their fair share.
Your theory falls short about the relationship between the public sector workers and the Dems. Their contributions to the Dems has not added jobs to their roles and the money spent lobbying the Dems is not enough to gaurantee fair working conditions or wages, which is why the union is needed.
The government does not have the workers best interest at heart, never have.
Well, looks like the anons have no ammo for today's turkey shoot. Better luck next time, fellas.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe a guy like Walker could be so damn dumb. At first, I thought it was a prank or something The Onion came up with.
Rev Right...you gotta be joking. Unions are graft on a huge scale? Do you realize that they got outspent by about a million to one last election cycle? This is your "democracy", where the corporations makes serfs out of everyone? No thanks!
ReplyDeleteHey speaking of graft, what do you think about the provision that Koch industries gets to buy up all the power plants in Wisconsin. Nice, huh?
Field, this Walker dude is dumber than a box of rocks and Sarah Palin put together. This is the best a billionaire's money can buy? Did you hear the guy pretending to be his daddy? That was even a worse caricature than those Quebecers pretending to be Sarkozy. Hilarious. You can't make this up. Let's see Fox News spin their way out of this one.
ReplyDeletekid: "He was ready to use goons to disrupt rallies with School Teachers and children there"
ReplyDeleteDid you listen to the tape? It sounds like he was talking about the unions using troublemakers; he certainly did not rise to the bait.
It is also apparent he does not personally know David Koch.
Yeah but he knows David Koch's money. Intimately. Which is why that call got through and he was so gabby. The rats have been busted good this time. Bwah-hah-hah!!

Your ignorance is astounding, but not surprising. Since 1989, unions make up 12 of the 20 largest political donors. Of course, almost all of their money goes to democrats. Not only that, most corporate money goes to democrats too, so who exactly is doing the outspending?
You are a self-made serf, and you don't even know it. Pathetic.
Power line blog. Epic fail. Let's talk about last election cycle and the "Chamber of Commerce" untold millions funneling into the RNC. Go back to google and search for "Koch millions Republican governors". The Kochs gave a cool million, some of which went in the greasy little hands of our friend Mr. Walker, who like a good whore is trying to earn that money.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile my union job allows me to pay bills and taxes and support your deadbeat ass.
BTW...I like the way you dodged the question about the power plants.
Ernesto said..."The Kochs gave a cool million, some of which went in the greasy little hands of our friend Mr. Walker"
ReplyDelete$43,000 to Walker, out of $11 million he raised, and out of $37.4 million spent in the campaign. Wow.
And those campaign donation numbers were posted by Powerline (a legitimate site, btw), but come from public records available at Open Secrets. Run your own numbers if you are interested in the truth. My take is that you are not.
I didn't address your parroting of the Koch brothers being given Wisconsin power plants internet rumor because it's a ridiculous slander. It's not true, dumbass.
You are weak dude, real weak.
It used to be widely understood that collective bargaining has no place in government employment. In 1937, the American president beloved by liberals, FDR, warned that collective bargaining “cannot be transplanted into the public service.” George Meany, head of the AFL-CIO for a quarter century, said unions were not appropriate for civil servants. As recently as 1978, the vast majority of states prohibited unionization of government employees.
ReplyDeleteAnytime there is the slightest suggestion that perhaps in the middle of a deep recession, public school teachers should pay 1.5 percent of their salaries toward their extravagant health care plans for their entire families, suddenly we get television ads of hard-working men doing dangerous jobs on docks and in foundries while being abused by their greedy capitalist overseers.
The unions must be desperately hoping that no one will notice … Wait a minute! WE’RE TALKING ABOUT TEACHERS! This isn’t the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” — it’s Mrs. Cooper’s seventh-grade “values clarification” class.
With heavy union dues, labor has plenty of money to pay for propaganda and to threaten and bribe politicians.
On his first day in office, the Republican governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, signed an executive order denying public sector employees the right to bargain collectively — something that had been granted, naturally, by a Democratic governor.
As a result, Indiana government employees instantly got to take home an extra thousand dollars that no longer went to union dues — and good employees started getting raises, while bad employees got cashiered.
But government workers think the job of everyone else in the economy is to protect their high salaries, crazy work rules and obscene pensions. They self-righteously lecture us about public service, the children, a “living wage” — all in the service of squeezing more money from the taxpayer to fund their breathtakingly selfish job arrangements.
There’s never a recession if you work for the government. The counties with the highest per capita income aren’t near New York City or Los Angeles — they’re in the Washington, D.C., area — a one-company town where the company is the government. The three counties with the highest incomes in the entire country are all suburbs of Washington. Eleven of the 25 counties with the highest incomes are near Washington.
For decades now, the Democrats have had a good gig buying the votes of government workers with outrageous salaries, benefits and work rules — and then sticking productive earners with the bill. But, now, we’re out of money, no matter how long Wisconsin Democrats hide out in Illinois.
Mack Lyons, "Well, looks like the anons have no ammo for today's turkey shoot. Better luck next time, fellas."
ReplyDeleteWe are tired of being called ugly names and discriminated against by you FN folks! Of course, you racists wouldn't know anything about that....hypocrites!
I hope they lock that murphy guy up and throw away the key. To punk a good hearted and honest Gov of Wisconsin is a sin and definitely against the law.
Field should be ashamed for posting bullshit.
mell - true, but I'm alot more left than some people on this board realize. And rarely disagreed with you in principle.
ReplyDeleteThere a few things though.
a) Note, I said I need a posse. Even with best intentions - you can't have a lot of progressive change when you're only ride or die allies are Kuicinich and the CBC. In order to get the kind of government that we want to see (short of becoming a dictatorship) we need to have a strong majority -- or at least enough sensible pols who realize that investing in people and not profits and plunder (war) is sensible and help our economy in the long run.
b)You have to calculate the overall cost. The main reason I'd be concerned is the massive unemployment that would come from dismantling the military industrial complex. Rich people (particularly corporate overlords) love the pass on their profit losses on to workers. Simply make it a crime to set up corporate headquarters in the Cayman Island or a Post office in Delaware. And tell companies like GE and Boeing - either start working on green tech, biotech and other resources that help not hurt people - or plan to fork over the balance of whatever death ray budget the DOD gave.
I'm a liberal mell, but I'm also pragmatic and a disciple of realpolitik.

3. Citigroup
4. UPS
5. Altria (Philip Morris)
6. Microsoft
7. JP Morgan
8. Time Warner
9. Morgan Stanley
10. Lockheed Martin
Of course, thanks to the five wingnuts on the Supreme Court, no one will ever know how much money Walker really got from the Kochs, or from the government of Bahrain for that matter...
And the power plant thing is all too real, it's part of the bill to give away state assets in no bid contracts. This will only add more money to the deficit, or course as we all know...and now have heard from the governor himself...this was never about the deficit, but about getting rid of unions.
"nope, you're just a dumbass"

Odd, considering that not one of the kids could vote...but it did give money to an R. Plus the dog, and the maid, and the entire executive staff of each of the Koch Corporations.
ReplyDeleteWhy do so many lie about public unions? The pay is public info and a quick search reveals that it isn't that extravagant. Even in LA, home of LAC, the income for public service is less than than offered for similar positions in the private sector. Unless one is comparing PhD Engineering degrees with BillySueBobCyrus' Skool fer Hamerin' Shif.
'Ann', you lie. The pay of public employees isn't outrageous. Unless you beleeverate that you are sooo much better than those who went to school, worked hard, played by the rules, and made a modest living. Maybe a DC person makes more than one in some backwater...you neglect to mention that the entry for most DC positions is a valid BS with at least two years experience. What was the qualifications drooler had to meet? You also pretend that the high incomes are sourced by government employ. Really? Where is your proof? Show us how a 120K/ year Federal Service employee is the cause. I know, to low-skill and low-infos this is tons of munny. Hate to tell them that for many jobs, this is the entry. How much do your wingnut welfare scions make? What is the pay scale for banksters? I will say I have had experience with 'merit pay'. It was exceeding odd that only good christians received the extra...and that only favorites of the boss were exempt from firing. But then, petit lordship is a feature to you...not a bug.
Must be tough to know your Glorious Union-Busting Dear Leader is a schmuck who can be so easily punked. That his vaunted heroic stance is more about being the willing submissive to the Koch desires, whether they be wage slavery or giveaways of public goods. All this Daddy talk and he likes being a lickspittle. What sort of GOP Daddy are you seeking?

Seems to me that the Europeans pay far less...and get far better results. Using your 'logic', we should cut the CEO pay to conform to what Heeyucks make. Still, how do you justify the exorbitant CEO pay and perks...especially when they under-perform the Europeans?
ReplyDeleteOr, is it that CEOs are born better and should never have to deign to justify their godliness? Or give up their blessings ordained by gawd and Rand?

President Obama’s endorsement of the firing of the entire faculty and staff of a Rhode Island public school is reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s crushing of the air traffic controllers union, nearly three decades ago. Back then, President Reagan made an example of a union that had supported his presidential candidacy, and ultimately decertifying the union when it went on strike. The move sent a signal to the bosses in all sectors of the U.S. economy: the president – the U.S. government – is on management’s side, and unions are a considered a threat to the general economic welfare.
Obama’s hatchet man and basketball buddy is Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who envisions waves of school closings, teacher firings and charter school openings for the next “five or six years.” That sounds like a kind of “final solution” for teachers unions – and for public education

ReplyDeleteOne of Barack Obama's staunchest supporters and prized campaigners and film biographers from the motion picture and television business has just been accused of union busting, according to a complaint filed Thursday with the National Labor Relations Board. Before the exposé, writer/actor/director/producer/author/playwright Tyler Perry invited the presidential candidate to the grand opening of his entertainment studio on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, this coming Saturday night. But if Obama attends he will be met by picket lines thrown up by the Writers Guild of America with support from other unions including the Teamsters, even though the latter union has officially endorsed the Democrat.

The charter school hype never ceases to bear bitter fruit. Take the state of Indiana. Nearly 23,000 students attend 62 tuition-free, public charter schools in Indiana. Under Indiana law, the mayor of Indianapolis can authorize charter schools and he has sponsored about 20. Another three are authorized by traditional public schools in Lafayette and Evansville, Indiana. Ball State University is another authorizer. Of the nearly 40 public charter schools authorized by Ball State University (BSU), the university has placed 23 percent on probation and required 10 percent to take corrective action. Another 10 percent either withdrew their charter or had it revoked by the university. The grand total of delinquent or questionable charters is thus 43%. Many of these schools include an emphasis on military-like discipline, tough love, character development and zero-tolerance policies.

UTS, I have a poser. Suppose wingnut welfare wants to sockpuppet the Welfare Queen...but most Americans won't fall for that scam a second time. How about a poorly edumacted, delusional fake AfAm? Rife with ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome) the person could exalt racist stereotypes of unqualified Affirmative Action students/hires who vastly overstate their qualifications. The ODS could also introduce fake memes into the conversation via stealth..as a wite dude who lives in Mom's Basement would be laughed off the thread. A circular screen of 'personas' could make finding actual data impossible and the only input would be pre-screened to fit the tale.

ReplyDeleteCampaign contributions from large donors..and the return favours are somehow liasons with the Dark One. School choice, which is a very old way to keep your children away from TeaBaggers, is the Mark of Ham. The inability to empathize with union members as you are literally an elite in the US is much more pronounced in the current person...and just normal in the previous one.
When you are focused on the person...and their attributes...instead of the policies, one might think that there is an agenda. After all, whether it was bush or st reagan...or anyone...one should be consistent and equitable.
Here is a hint. Professional AfAm women are EXCEEDINGLY well put together in dress, manner and education. Only in christmole-vania or wingnuttia are college-educated AfAm females slovenly in any sense. But then, I would surmise that your exposure to the greater world is strikingly limited. You would do far better to use the persona of Stepin Fetchit or George. ReplyDeleteFiring a subset of bad teachers from failing school is a lot different than trying to re-write labor laws. And this is common in state take over of schools (if you read the article after). School boards often fire teachers after the state takes over.
Also, you're quoting a story from a year ago, the union and the board of ed worked out a deal a few months ago.
The lay offs are because of anything, budget shortfalls. Only 11 are being let go because of poor performance. The rest are because of the state and municipal budget crises.
But of course, that would require further analysis than "Barak Obama is the Great Satan". (Good look on that line Mold. Oldie but goody. ;-) )
BTW, many hollywood elite producers are union busters -- Perry just happens to one of the worse. Ask any Black actor who isn't a household name who worked with him.
ReplyDeleteHow this is a "Black Eye to Obama" is beyond me. Like Black America really cares how badly TP treats his workers. Hell, I'd consider most of movies abuse enough.
Obama is nothing but mealy-mouthed statements. He was selected by the DNC as a rubber stamp for Reid and Pelosi, and has been merely a placeholder in the Oval Office. No leadership skills whatsoever. Even his alleged oratorical skills disappear when he's away from the teleprompter. While the world burns, Obama will be celebrating with a Motown concert tonight. Yes, Jimmy Carter at least was engaged in the Middle East and Iran crises, but Obama seems to have no sense of responsibility or urgency. He's living proof that a Harvard graduate can be an incompetent fool.

As hedge funds spin their financial webs to spur charter school expansion and President Obama bullies states to lift caps on charters, "right-wing foundations are attempting to swallow whole the entire school district of Washington, DC." For a $65 million donation, the Wal-Mart family and other fat cats demand DC schools drop union rules - and threaten to take back the money if the voters change administrations
When it comes to the public schools, the Obama administration is allied with the most rapacious sectors of Wall Street and far-right foundations. That political reality is most evident in the administration's campaign to establish a parallel national network of charter schools, with a heavy emphasis on inner cities. Obama and his education chief, Arne Duncan, have spent their first year and a half in office coercing states to expand charters or lose out on more than $4 billion in federal education moneys. Obama's allies on Wall Street invest heavily in charter schools, tapping into the public money stream to build their own vision of corporate education.
Historically, Wall Street is to Democrats what Big Oil is to Republicans. Hedge funds and bankers have become the Sugar Daddies of charter schools, using their clout with big city Democrats to give charters every advantage over conventional public schools.

The Obama administration is spearheading an unprecedented assault on public education in the US. The White House and Education Secretary Arne Duncan are promoting a nationwide wave of school closures, teacher and staff layoffs, attacks on teachers’ wages and conditions, and an expansion of privately run charter schools—all in the guise of education “reform.”
This agenda is being carried out in school districts across the country over the angry opposition of students, parents and teachers. At a highly-charged meeting packed with parents and teachers on Wednesday in Kansas City, Missouri, the district’s school board voted to endorse a plan by the superintendent to shut down 28 of the city’s 61 schools and to cut 700 of 3,000 jobs, including 285 teachers’ jobs.
Enrollment in Kansas City Schools has eroded in large part through the siphoning off of students by charter and private schools. Kansas City, with a population of 480,000, presently has about the same number of public school students, 17,000, as were enrolled in 1890 when the city population was just over 132,000. This is down from a high of 77,000 students in 1964.

Nearly 40 percent of newer charter school teachers flee for other jobs, according to a startling new study funded by the Great Lakes Center for Education Research and Practice.
The study, Teacher Attrition in Charter Schools, by Gary Miron and Brooks Applegate of the Western Michigan University Evaluation Center, is based on the authors' analyses of data collected in surveys of charter school employees from around the country conducted from 1997 to 2006.
The study results indicate that as many as one out of every four charter school teachers leave each year, which is double the typical public school attrition rate (11 percent). Moreover, attrition among new teachers in charter schools is close to 40 percent annually, a figure that is critical for charter schools given that their percentage of teachers under 30 (37 percent) is more than three times that of traditional public schools (11 percent).
Miron and Applegate also noted that their study differs from most of the existing satisfaction research that often excludes from data collection efforts those teachers who are leaving or have left charter schools.

Reformists won control of the teachers union in the town where Barack Obama became a fan of corporate schooling: Chicago. The new union leadership seems prepared to confront privatization and high stakes testing head on. The tests measure the accumulated results of deprivation, not academics, said Karen Lewis: "Class sizes rose, schools were closed. Then standardized tests...measured that slow death by starvation."
The nation's unionized public school teachers are in a race for survival, whether they know it or not. Their worst enemy - the one that can do them and the public the most harm - was not George Bush, the white Republican, who called teachers' unions "terrorists." It is Barack Obama, the Black Democrat, who has taken the corporate education agenda farther than Bush could ever dream of.
By all rights, the nation's five million unionized teachers should be in the forefront of resistance to the corporate money bags that dominate the Republican and Democratic parties. Teachers are the best-equipped for the job, in raw numbers, in depth of union penetration and, especially on the moral front: most people like and admire teachers. George Bush's Republicans were made to look like ogres when they tried to vilify teachers as a class. Yet that is precisely what Barack Obama is doing: making teachers the scapegoats and villains for all the ills that have been inflicted on the inner cities of America for the past five or six decades. Obama is having considerably more success than Bush in his offensive against teachers, mostly because teachers' unions cannot seem to recognize their enemy when he is a Democrat, and Black

It is stoopid enough with business (it usually kills the biz) but to have your child's education depend upon the whims and vagaries of folks too lazy to attend Board Meetings and PT Conferences is scary. As far as President Obama is concerned, the state of the Union is now in harmony, with the merging of Republican politics and his own. The new consensus is an austere one for most Americans, as Obama joins the GOP “to prevent the domestic arms of government from coming to the people’s aid, by freezing finances” for five years. But have no fear: corporate tax rates will plummet, allowing the long-awaited trickle down to begin
He didn’t. In announcing a five-year freeze on domestic spending, Obama enters a new phase of aggressive – rather than furtive – collaboration with the GOP. To ensure that catastrophe cannot be avoided for the tens of millions battered and set adrift by the two (lesser and greater) recessions of the 21st century, Obama will join with Republicans to prevent the domestic arms of government from coming to the people’s aid, by freezing finances. With whole communities in a state of economic dislocation, Obama burns the rescue boats and poisons the water, all the while promising that the necessary budgetary savings will not be achieved “on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens” – as if Wall Street’s bankers will shield the helpless with their well-bonused bodies
Funny, how Obama seems so much more in his element in the wake of the November defeat than when Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress. Half of Obama’s Blue Dog friends have been replaced by Republicans, but the president seems even happier among the new guys, as if he’s finally within reach of the grand, “bi-partisan consensus” that is the ideal state of being in a post-everything America

Obama's Ambassador Susan Rice skipped a critical UN Meeting on Libya to attend a "sustainability" conference.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not the first time she skipped an important UN meeting.
She also was absent when the UN held an emergency Security Council meeting on Israel’s raid of a ship headed to Gaza, when Iran was elected to the UN Women’s Commission and failed to speak out when Libya was elected to the UN Human Rights Council in May 2010.
We’re in the best of hands.
The Huffington Post reported:
"At great personal risk to himself and his family, Libya’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Ibrahim Dabbashi, pushed the UN Security Council to take up the violence in his home country. Dabbashi said he could no longer support the regime of his boss Moammar Gadhafi and stepped out to condemn what he called “a genocide”. The dramatic event prompted the first UN meeting of the 15 member Security Council on the uprisings sweeping across the region since the beginning of Tunisia’s revolution, Egypt’s violence and the developing protests in Bahrain, Yemen, Palestine and Iran.
The United States was represented by Foreign Service officer and Ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo. The Obama administration’s appointed ambassador, Susan Rice, skipped the Libya meeting and instead flew to South Africa to attend a UN panel discussion on global sustainability.
Missing the only Security Council meeting on the Middle East revolution was not Rice’s first absence from high profile UN business. Rice was absent when the UN held an emergency Security Council meeting on Israel’s raid of a ship headed to Gaza and when Iran was elected to the UN Women’s Commission. Rice also failed to speak out when Libya was elected to the UN Human Rights Council in May 2010."
As the Middle East continues to implode the Obama Administration attends a Sustainability Meeting.

Ahh, the Fairy Tales of Trolls. You would like to beleeverate that somehow the AfAms are lesser by birth and skin tone. Oopsy, that only exists in your need to pretend. Since you aren't there..instead of blaming some AfAm for taking yer job..you might want to realize that you were never in the running. When hiring for certain positions, we look at those with PhDs and experience. With Affirmative Action we pretty much have the same talent pool...but with more AfAms...and women...and others. ReplyDeleteSPC...are you goofing off at work? Or do you even have a job?
ReplyDeleteMe, I am off today because of the 40 hour work week that unions won back in the day, and that the Koch brothers and their whores are trying to get rid of.

SPC, love how you invent rationales for Affirmative Action and unions. Actually, both were responses. One, to the strange inability to certain wite dudes to hire the qualfied...the other because some people just hate to pay a living wage.
ReplyDeleteSince both were responses to blatant malfeasance...would it not be better to stop being a jerkhole? There are US firms of ancient lineage that never had union problems...but they treat employees with respect, dignity and fairness. Affirmative Action only arises when hiring is markedly dishonest.
If you want to whine about Affirmative Action, the greatest recipients were not AfAms...but wealthy white women. You bleat about how weepy you fee-fee that some Obama was hired and not you (he has Ivy League, Law and you have a 'breathing certificate' from Goober High)...but never once cry about how Megs McCain or the bushTwins or Paris was picked. Now, why is that?

ReplyDeleteWhy are companies not hiring? Do they just enjoy sitting on heaps of cash, drinking champagne, and laughing at the unemployed?
Maybe it has something to do with the uncertainties imposed by the administration over the past two years regarding Obamacare and taxes. Ya think?
Unemployment has gone down slightly, as the presence of a Republican congress has calmed the jitters somewhat. But nothing will stop this progress more that $150 a barrel oil.
Maybe it's time for the Prez to lift the ban on drilling. Ya think?

ReplyDeleteThat makes a lot of sense since unemployment steadily rose while the Republicans held all 3 branches of the Federal government for 6 years!
"Maybe it's time for the Prez to lift the ban on drilling. Ya think?"
ReplyDeleteYeah, so we could have another oil rig blowout in the Gulf. By the way, you can drill all you want here and it won't stop the price of oil from rising since it's a speculative market. And as long as there is any reason for big investors to put their money in, such as fears about democracy emerging in oil-producing countries, the price will go up...and up. Just another one of the beauties of that special brand of unregulated capitalism that you religiously believe in.

Murphy simply called Walker's office, saying he was Koch, and was ultimately connected with Walker's chief of staff, Keith Gilkes. "The most ridiciulous thing to me is when I get on line with the chief of staff and he wanted to take my number down, and I said I couldn't give it to him because my maid, Maria, had thrown my phone into the washing machine," Murphy says.
As he tells it in the Beast story:
I politely said hello, not knowing how friendly Gilkes and Koch may be. He was eager to help. “I was really hoping to talk directly to Scott,” I said. He said that could be arranged and that I should just leave my number. I explained to Gilkes, “My goddamn maid, Maria, put my phone in the washer. I’d have her deported, but she works for next to nothing.” Gilkes found this amusing. “I’m calling from the VOID—with the VOID, or whatever it’s called. You know, the Snype!”

Ah, Anonymous, typical right wing lurker, still parroting neo-conservative canards which have be proven false for over 20 years.
BTW, I made the comic book reference to point out how ridiculous it is spend 600B/yr on military spending when the next closest nations, China and England, spend less than a 1/6 of that. Unless you're planning to fight off the Badoon or Skrull invasion (another comic book reference for you), you're not getting much bang for your buck. Our biggest threat -- guys living in caves. Hell, you could get a team of Marines and SEALs to run into Afghanistan and drag bin Laden out of his bed without much trouble. (It worked for Haiti) The Chinese aren't going to shoot their biggest client for their cheap crap. And the Russians would rather play mafia wars than worry about us.
Our war economy is a giant welfare program for corporations to uncreative to do something other than build guns and bombs.
But satire and humor are lost on you.
From you rather canned response, I can see that you have little clue how much we waste on military and how we can change our economy to focus on Green Technology & Biotechnology. You seem not to realize that without the progressive movements of the late 1800's and early 1900's, our few working rights wouldn't exist. You also may not realize that part of the reason our economy is constantly teetering is because we still pay out of pocket for healthcare, when the rest of the industrialized world realizes that some form of single payer healthcare is a cost savings.
So, in other words, go back to your Limbaugh and Hannity little child, the adults are talking.

It amazes me, that as intelligent as people try to sound on this forum, they can't seem t grasp this simple fact:
ReplyDeleteThe United States is a Republic; NOT a Democracy. It never has been, and was never meant to be.
Don't take my word for it, read the Pledge of Allegiance, or the Constitution. Or, Google Republic vs. Democracy.
There IS a very distinct difference
"A/A is like labor unions. A/A helps below average minorities get ahead while labor unions protect below average workers from being fired."
ReplyDeleteHighly qualified African Americans were constantly overlooked by White employers who went on to choose less-qualified or even unqualified Whites, just because. Hence Affirmative Action.
And for the longest time, Whites have complained that their highly qualified companions are being constantly overlooked in favor of less-qualified or unqualified African Americans, thanks to Affirmative Action.
Tainting the whole issue is the nagging fact that many Whites feel that African Americans, as a whole, are somehow inherently inferior and therefore unqualified to do much of anything. Unless it happens to involve menial labor, of course.
So if Affirmative Action was to die a "deserved" death and employers were allowed to hire solely on merit, chances are most White employers would default back to choosing less-qualified or even unqualified Whites, just because. And the reasons would be legion -- they were "a better fit", they "fit the corporate environment", they were "better able to integrate into the team", etc. White employers already do this to a certain extent by tossing applications with "strongly ethnic" names or identifiable HBCUs into "file 13", a.k.a the garbage can.
Until African Americans know for sure that they have equal opportunities in employment post-Affirmative Action and NOT have to see employers backslide toward how things were handled long ago, Affirmative Action will remain in place.
"Why are companies not hiring? Do they just enjoy sitting on heaps of cash, drinking champagne, and laughing at the unemployed?
ReplyDeleteMaybe it has something to do with the uncertainties imposed by the administration over the past two years regarding Obamacare and taxes. Ya think?"
Well, they do enjoy their bonuses. And the stockholders enjoy the dividends they receive. Companies know that they have the upper hand in this economic climate. The longer people are out of work, the more desperate they become in finding and keeping a job. And now that companies have discovered that they can double or triple the workload of their existing employees without much complaint (because they are desperate to keep their jobs), they can afford to bide their time and not hire anyone.
These "uncertainties" are just red herrings.
"Unemployment has gone down slightly, as the presence of a Republican congress has calmed the jitters somewhat. But nothing will stop this progress more that $150 a barrel oil.
Maybe it's time for the Prez to lift the ban on drilling. Ya think?"
Lifting the ban on drilling won't do a thing for lowering oil prices as long as the supercharged speculative market is on a tear. I doubt that'll hurt Obama's reelection chances -- Wall Street seems to like the economic situation as it is, thus Obama will get as much financial campaign support as possible to remain in the White House.
Rev Right and his fellow righties are always rudely trying to say that others don't know what they are talking about rather than just making their point and just saying they disagree, they have to be arrogant in their own ignorance.
ReplyDeleteRev Right in his response below shows that he does not understand the nature of capitalism. And implies here that they really care about workers being unemployed as they shop for the workers who will take the lowest wages. And companies are still making profit while the workers are in a recession and it has been pointed our all over the place that these folks are sitting on their profits.
And much of the profit comes from laying off workers.
One doesn't have to be an economics major to see what's going on, the rich, the banks, the corporations, big business is squeezing as much production out of workers and giving back as little as they can.
http://washingtonindependent.com/91632/companies-sitting-on-cash-but-not-hiring
And to insinuate that the most right leaning party of the two capitalist parties will bring back jobs and fair wages and good times, demonstrates that it is he that doesn't understand the function of the system we live under. And when did the unemployment go down?
LAWD!

Mack Lyons tell the truth brother. You are right on both counts. Employers are doubling up workloads and squeezing more and more concessions and increasing work hours more and more. They are doing more and more what Walmart got caught doing; having folks work off the clock, taking work home and they are harrassing folks more and more.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right more sources of oil will just equate to more profit. Surely the economist quacks must know that the current oil prices are artificially inflated primarily by market speculation plus profit padding.
The prices at the pump are not a reflection of what it costs to produce and deliver oil plus a little profit. These costs haven't changed a lot. Of course the oil companies have used the speculative craziness to add even more profit to the cost as well.
TrollReader, pretending you have even the slightest clue is funny. Why are you not bewailing that so many have called PA a State...when it is a Commonwealth. There is a difference.

Mack I dug up this opinion piece in the NYTimes and it gets at the issue as well. One of the problems the anons seem to have is they don't have any experience in the real work a day world.
ReplyDeleteI would hate to think that they betray their own class interests and their fellow workers just for being disagreeable or because the conservative pundits seem to make sense to them on some social issue that has nothing to do with putting food on their tables.
"Over the past decade and a half, corporations have been saving more and investing less in their own businesses. A 2005 report from JPMorgan Research noted with concern that, since 2002, American corporations on average ran a net financial surplus of 1.7 percent of the gross domestic product — a drastic change from the previous 40 years, when they had maintained an average deficit of 1.2 percent of G.D.P. More recent studies have indicated that companies in Europe, Japan and China are also running unprecedented surpluses.
The reason for all this saving in the United States is that public companies have become obsessed with quarterly earnings. To show short-term profits, they avoid investing in future growth. To develop new products, buy new equipment or expand geographically, an enterprise has to spend money — on marketing research, product design, prototype development, legal expenses associated with patents, lining up contractors and so on.."

The reason why your 20K savings account didn't disappear when medium size banks were dropping like flies is because of FDIC.
First, it's clear you do not know the history of the FDIC nor anything about the FSLIC. Here's a tidbit for you. The banks themselves pay the insurance premium for the FDIC insurance. The insurance is an operating cost for banks.

ReplyDeleteNot to mention Obama hasn't pardon civil rights hero O.J.Simpson or found a cure or increased funding for Sickle cell anemia."
ReplyDeleteWhy should Obama pardon O.J.? Spoken like a true wingnut who buys into all types of stereotypes about black people.
"That makes a lot of sense since unemployment steadily rose while the Republicans held all 3 branches of the Federal government for 6 years!"
Yes, I think it did.
"Affirmative Action is looking past whites with vastly superior qualifications and experience and hiring/promoting blacks.
Those are the facts."
Give me some examples. Take your time wingnut, I will wait.......
Kid, "OK MAMMY if you're so smart with your 300 I.Q. why wasn't you elected President? Your I.Q is higher than Bill Gates and the President, what are you doing here? Field and I actually know a person in MENSA and the Afrospear and his I.Q isn't as high as yours."
ReplyDeleteWell, you might know someone in MENSA but I happen to know AB DOES have an IQ of 250. You should know this but you are too ignorant and too big of a racist to give her the respect and honor she deserves. Of course, you live in Cleveland where the average IQ is 10. So how could you possibly know?
"You FN abortionists will soon have to explain why you are willing to kill the vulnerable and the innocent."
ReplyDeleteTell W and his crew to go first.
Field: "That makes a lot of sense since unemployment steadily rose while the Republicans held all 3 branches of the Federal government for 6 years!"
ReplyDelete"Yes, I think it did."
Well, you would be wrong:

Is it really that hard to Google?
Take at gander at what happens after Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid take over in January of 2007.
Field, "Tell W and his crew to go first."
ReplyDeleteFyi, W has always been against abortions. You should know this. Let me clarify this for you so you won't be confused: There are no Repubs for abortions. They will always stand against pro-abortion folks who enjoy killing the fetus.

ReplyDeleteYes, they just wait until the grow up to kill them.(See innocent Iraqis)
Field, "Yes, they just wait until the grow up to kill them.(See innocent Iraqis)"
ReplyDeleteField, you are hopeless when it comes to being able to stay focused. We are talking about abortions in America and you start talking about wars in Iraq and God knows where else.
I sincerely hope you are able to concentrate on your legal cases better than this. Otherwise, your clients are in deep shit.
Hi Field,
ReplyDeleteLongtime reader, occasional commenter (you use to have my blog on your roll)feeling compelled to weigh in here because I (unlike I suspect many of these commenter)am actually from and live in Wisconsin. I didn't bother reading thru all those positive/negative posts either so sue me if I repeat something someone already said.
I'm also not going to be long-winded so to sum up: Most of us knew what we were getting in Walker when he got elected. There were the same complaints about how he did his job as Milwaukee County Executive (and he made no secret of his aspirations for the governorship). The guy is as slick a politician as they come. People complaining about tax money used to shore up chronically failing pensions need to read up. The pension fund for Wisconsin's state workers is one of the healthiest and best managed in the country, there's no need to overhaul it. The unionized workers in WI realize this and simply have refused to go along with it.
As for the whole state employee vs. regular joe worker angle of this, it's just frustrating to me to see how teachers ( just for example, although not the only group affected in this fight)are treated in a lot of other countries. They are revered socially and it reflects in their financial compensation. I can't speak to other states, but in WI the teachers got their pension in a trade-off where the trade was substantial pay raises. So in other words they made due with less then to have some security in the future. And now Walker wants to take that away too, as if they don't deserve it WOULDN'T YOU BE PISSED?
I'm a regular joe in the private sector, my dad worked for the state of WI for over 35 years, we were never 'rich' when I was growing up. My dad busted his ass to provide for my mom and siblings. He's had some health issues lately and he depends on his state benefits to help with the cost of healthcare. You trying to tell me he doesn't deserve it now?? Well I'm sorry Field but f*&k whoever talking that bullsh8t!!!
And guess what teabags, neocons, and 'moral majority' leftovers we peeped where you trying to "take our country back" to (as in way back in the day of strange fruit)and it ain't even going down like that, but thanks for making it clearer every day who the real enemy is.
