Searching for a soul.
"The more Mitt Romney has immersed himself in politics, the more vigorously he has peddled the narrative—what Newt Gingrich has termed "pious baloney"—that politics was just something that the life-long businessman stumbled into, more or less in the manner of a fellow who strolls into his local diner for a cup of coffee in the middle of a stickup and is thereupon transformed, albeit reluctantly, into a civic hero. Romney's selective elucidation of his own biography seems of a piece with his fuzzy ideology. As one of his former senior advisers admits, "Mitt's flaw is authenticity. Someone who changes his mind can be effective as a business leader or running the Olympics. But when you change your mind on such core issues as abortion, then what? Where's the authenticity?"
Romney's story line has undergone a few crucial revisions. As recently as February, he told supporters in Nevada, "I never imagined I would one day run for president of the United States," but back in December 2007 he had a different recollection when I asked him when he first thought about taking up residency in the White House. "It was probably, oh, back when I was with Senator [Bob] Bennett of Utah after the Olympics, when I was governor a couple of years, around 2004," he replied. "He just said to me, 'Y'know, you don't have to decide if you want to be president. But you do have to decide if you want the option to become president.' [In a recent interview, Bennett clarified to me that he first put this in memo form.] And it's like, 'Wow. I'm a one-term governor from Massachusetts. You think I've got that kind of opportunity?'
But of course," Romney went on, "you know, did it pop into my mind at other times in my life? Of course. But not as a 'Hey, I've really got a shot at doing this,' but more 'This is a serious course for me.' "
So why did the boy who dreamed of designing cars or practicing medicine instead become the single most driven presidential aspirant of the twenty-first century? Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, gave away the answer to a reporter in 1999, a few years before anyone fully appreciated what it meant. "Politics," she explained, "is in Mitt's blood." Or as Mitt himself would write, "I had become my father's son."
I just posted parts of an article from GQ Magazine that focused on Mr. Romney. I am trying to learn as much as I can about him because my wingnut friends have convinced me that he could be my next president. Unfortunately I don't like what I have been seeing so far.
I don't mind that fact that he has never taken a drink. I don't mind his Ward Cleaver persona, or the way he talks down to everybody like we all work for him. What I do mind is that fact that he has no core or soul. I just can't get over the fact that there is not one authentic bone in the man's body. His unctuous used- car salesman style deliveries this campaign season have been hard to watch. And yes, for the most part, we expect politicians to be inauthentic. But even though we understand that most politicians are usually insincere, there is just so much speciousness a person can take.
"Mitt reacted to his double-digit defeat with the conviction that politics wasn't for him. "Under no circumstances" would he run again, he declared. Just two weeks later, however, he told a reporter that he might challenge the other Massachusetts senator, John Kerry, in 1996. "Today I say I will leave the door open," he said."
They don't call him Flipper for nothing.
It's that whitebread and buttermilk lifestyle that Mormons lead. They've got no experience seducing women who they don't really care about or doing a carpet dance when they get caught doing things that only a parent can forgive. I've known any number of devoted Mormons, and it's not just a religion, it's an all inclusive community/lifestyle with diligent lifetime organizational record-keeping -literal permanent records of all of your stumbles that follow you for life in your all inclusive community/lifestyle.

This guy is a master manipulator. He will say anything to get what he wants. Not at all unusual but what we don't know is, what the son of a bitch really wants.
ReplyDeleteI am not willing to take a chance on him having a snowball's chance in hell at getting into the White House. The last rethug that was a teetotaler was Nixon. That worked out really well for us.
Even though I've only recently found your blog I have an expectation of intellectual honesty from you. I'm back because I'm seeing it in many of your commentor's posts. For what it's worth, this story of Romney may add a positive piece or two to your overall measure of the man:

When Mr. Obama was inaugurated black unemployment was 12.6%. 36 months later, it is at a depression era level 15.8%.
ReplyDelete* Black teenage unemployment is a jaw dropping 42.3 percent.
* In October 2010, blacks accounted for 22.6 percent of the then 40.5 million Americans who received food stamp benefits each month. That figure was projected to rise in 2011. Mark Rank of Washington University suggests a whopping 90 percent of black children may eventually live in households that need food stamps.
* In 2007, before Obama took office, white households had a median net worth of $134,280, compared with $13,450 for black households. By the end of 2009, the median net worth for white households plummeted 24% to $97,860. But for black households, it dropped 83% to $2,170. The Chicago Sun-Times called it, “The Disappearing Black Middle Class.”
If a Republican President did the sort of damage to black Americans that Barack Obama has, it would be called a hate crime.
"I don't mind that fact that he has never taken a drink. I don't mind his Ward Cleaver persona, or the way he talks down to everybody like we all work for him. ReplyDeleteField, your post speaks more about Obama and yourself than it does about Romney. The more you attempt to show Romney as dishonest and a 'flipper', the more you bring attention to how soulless Obama has "lied" and "flipped"-not only to Blacks- but to the entire nation as President.
The FACT that Obama has it written in the history of America as THE President who stuck it to his own people says a lot about the nature of his character and soul.
I will be giving 'serious' consideration to Mitt simply because he has no track record as a politician who has trampled and trashed Blacks. However, there is NO doubt that Obama has done just that-- which is unacceptable and unforgivable, IMO.
I am not saying that Mitt 'definitely' has my vote, but I am saying he can have it if he shows me he won't do to AAs what Obama has done.
Presently, Mitt does not scare me as much as Obama does. If you truly want to see what a lack of soul looks like, take a good look at Obama...he has none.
It's Still about the Economy and we are not stupid.

ReplyDeleteALL the rise in unemployment in Obama's term came in the first 12 months in office, before his policies had a chance to have an effect. They are a legacy of George W. Bush's failed policies.
If you voted for Obama to prove you were not a racist the last time.. (you know the rest)
ReplyDeleteMitt isn't horrible and I would say he does have a soul... but he isn't going to let you see it.
ReplyDeleteI get it (and I'm voting Obama).
Mitt is Mormon at the core and people don't like that. I get it, he gets it... so he tries to put on a veneer that people will like, he tries to be what he thinks people want him to be so they will vote for him... and he doesn't really get it because at the core he is not like all of them.
At the the core he and I are the same, the problem is that the very next layer on him is wrapped in money. My next layer is wrapped in the lack of money. it makes a big difference.

Field,
ReplyDeleteFollow me with this one, Flipper is for Paul Ryan's budget, the budget calls for student loans interest rates to return to over 6%. The other day Romney says he's for keeping the interest rates for student loans at it's current rate of slightly above 3%.
So does this mean the Flipper is now flippng against Ryan's Budget?

Your comment speaks of Mormonism as a 'self-examining' way of life. I like that. It shows Romney has a conscience, unlike Obama.
And you are right. Romney IS pretty transparent and America needs a transparent President- instead of the present opaque one who lies and discriminates against the poor and Blacks.
This should be an interesting race for the WH. Thus far, I still have more 'trust' in Romney. Considering he is running against a President who has gone against his promise for CHANGE, abandoned his voters and AAs, one would think Romney will win by a large margin. Unless Romney turns out to be Satan himself before election time, there is no way Obama is going to win.
Wow, NINE comments more than 12 hours after posting? Maybe new-blogger is troll-mining...

I join you in regarding Romney with severe prejudice--soulless seems appropriate. Think about all those others: when they have lied, cheated and stolen, it's pretty easy to track the motivator. With this guy? Not so much.

I agree. He has too much of a conscience to fake sincerely. He IS transparent, which is a good thing about him, because it makes him a far more trustworthy than Obama. Unfortunately, there seems to be a segment of our society that can't 'stand' transparency..i.e. Mr. Field, who would prefer a solid non-transparent liar like Obama.
The thing about non-transparent politicians is that by the time you have discovered their lies, it's waaay to late--they are already in the WH. LOL
America needs A TRANSPARENT POLITICAL LIAR. Need I say more? At this juncture, it's Romney.
What makes a transparent liar? Some of us are like that. Others can look you in the eye and lie without a feeling un-ease....Think about it.
you are either a dumb ass or a commie liar house negro.the economy did not start a down ward spiral until the national socialist democratic workers party took controll of both houses of congress in 06. you commierats covered up freddy&franny buying up bad community reinverstment act bad mortgages and passing them off as good which brought about the ression we are in now.republicans had nothing to do with the economic mess we aqre in now.every time demorats interfear in the market they cause ressions.oh why don't you talk anout bongo's granfather the war hero who spent the war in leavenworth and reiceved a D.D.how about all the attacks by negro thugs on white people, what the cat got your tongue.one day these racist negroes are going to run into people like me and who will leave them tits up on the pavment just like tray.

For the first sustained time since the Great Depression, the stretch since May 09 has seen government handouts exceed contributions. Currently, a net 13.5% of personal disposable income comes directly from the state, the highest fraction in the eighty-year record. The swing from pre-crisis levels is ~$845 billion pa: what must this must mean for the deficit and debt?
the economy is better now! are you stupid.
ReplyDeleteNo Democratic Voter fraud? Do you think everyone but you is stupid or would buy these democratic lies? Certainly you don't expect me to believe that your faculties are this lacking and you believe it either.
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago, Obama senior adviser and seasoned Chicago operative David Axelrod joked on MSNBC about election corruption. Asked whether “vote early and often” scams had come to an end in his shady hometown, Axelrod snarked: “Well, certainly on the air.” Yuk, yuk, yuk.
Behind the scenes, Democrats have been busy faking petition signatures, forging ballots and enlisting medical professionals to authorize fraudulent doctors’ notes for liberal teachers-union operatives protesting Republican opponents. It’s no laughing matter.
This week, four Democratic officials in Indiana were hit with felony charges related to petition fraud in the state’s 2008 primary.

"He has too much of a conscience to fake sincerely. "
ReplyDeleteOh no. That would be a complete misread of the man. He has no more conscience than any other habitual political liar; his Mormon faith/lifestyle notwithstanding. His problem is that he has no core upon which to call because he has no discernible set of fixed values other than his patrician sensibility and Mormon faith/lifestyle upon which he cannot be seen rely because his political party is a populist Evangelical Christian party opposed to and and suspicious of all things Mormon and patrician.
So, on he marches, utterly divorced from any semblance of recognizable reality, a manifestly off-putting candidate to all but those few patrician ultra-rich and/or Mormons who see something of themselves in his amorphous reflection.
Wow how is it not surprising that I see someone is lying again. I guess you right winders can't seem to stop your Bush mentality.

Then we wonder why things plummet when liberals handle them. Here is a prime example , dont understand what you are talking about. Use standard name calling (Right winders, References to Bush) Than be more concerned about a government fed number derived specifically to help the sitting president and not solve anything, rather than understanding what is in that number how they came to the conclusion things are getting better despite more people being out of work in the history of this country. Useful idiots, Obama likes you. He couldn't make it without mindless nanny-staters moonbats.

So, you are basing your vote on the fact you resent the man's success? Is that a rational way to choose a President?
Barack Obama has been very successful, do you resent that?
Romney got a head start being the son of a successful man, but by all acounts he made his fortune himself.
Obama's earned his way too by applying himself academically. He also had a tremendous amount of help along the way - his grandparent's sacrifice to send him to most prestigous high school in Hawaii, his grant to go to Occidental college, his acceptance despite poor grades to Columbia and Harvard financed by "friends".
Thus the two different philosophies. Romney want s to free popel up to pursue their dreams; Obama wants the government tp pave a yellow brick road for everyone.
If everybody got special breaks and free rides like Obama, they wouldn't be special or free anymore. Think about where each of these visions leads, don't dismiss Romney out of hand. the future doesn't have to be limited to what the government says it is.
"Behind the scenes, Democrats have been busy faking petition signatures, forging ballots and enlisting medical professionals to authorize fraudulent doctors’ notes for liberal teachers-union operatives protesting Republican opponents. It’s no laughing matter."
ReplyDeleteAnd ACORN and the NBPP are really behind this nefarious plot. Ha! Even if they are they're no match for ALEC money pouring into states to erode citizen's rights.
"A few weeks ago, Obama senior adviser and seasoned Chicago operative David Axelrod joked on MSNBC about election corruption. Asked whether “vote early and often” scams had come to an end in his shady hometown, Axelrod snarked: “Well, certainly on the air.” Yuk, yuk, yuk."
As a Chicago resident our elections are some of the cleanest and most inclusive around. We get a paper receipt unlike other states where you have to trust that a machine voted correctly and honestly. It WAS a joke and if you're so concerned come to Chicago and watch the polls like others have done. Trust, if the right thought there were shananigans going on in Chicago a Fox News truck would be outside every voting location like the one that happened to be in Philly in 2008.
"Thus the two different philosophies. Romney want s to free popel up to pursue their dreams; Obama wants the government tp pave a yellow brick road for everyone."
ReplyDeleteI don't see it that way at all. Barack wants eevryone to have an opportunity for success but in the Republican world only the wealthy will be able to succeed. If college costs go up fewer average joes will be able to afford it and which party is choosing to let education costs increase? Which party opposes unions which usually get better pay and benefits for its' members? Which party opposes public education which educates the vast majority of students here? Which party opposes the EPA which gives us clean water and air? I can go on and on but to simply make this a choice about someone who wants success and who doesn't is short sighted and incorrect. Mitt has no clue how to make it as a poor person while Michelle and Barack actually did it. I have more in common with the Obama's than I ever will with the Romney's as do millions of others.

ReplyDeleteEveryone does have the opportunity for success; government can only give some people extra opportunity by restricitng it for someone else. As long as it's you benefitting, I guess that's OK, but what about when the shoe is on the other foot?
The main reason college costs have gone up so much higher than everything else is all the money government has pumped into it via grants and loans. The more money there is, the more the price goes up. It is ridiculous. Now kids graduate with a debt the size of a mortgage. There should be help for poor kids, but throwing ever more money at it is stupid.
Private sector unions have a role, although much diminished form a centrury ago. Republicans don't support public sector unions, which are bankrupting state and local governments and part of a corrupt cycle of public money and campaign donations.
The EPA doesn't give us clean air and water. The environment is much cleaner than it was 50 years ago. Now they have gone way overboard in interfering with Americans and their livelihood.
Mitt did not grow up poor, but neither did Barak or Michelle, both of whom benefitted from a lifetime of affirmative action and the patronage of rich people.
If you say you have more in common with the Obama's it is only because you are black and therefore have access to affirmative action benefits. If you want to go as far as they did, with preferential Ivy league admissions and a job at Sidley Austin, you will also need some rich and powerful friends like Bill Ayer's dad, Percy Sutton, Khalid Al Mansour and Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
Lives like Romney's and Obama's aren't for everyone. Your vote for President should be for the guy whose policies will help the kind of lives most of us will lead. Obama's vision is a fantasy based on his charmed life. Out of these two candidates, its actually Romney who has the more "real" experience.
"What is the secret hand signal we use to each other when we are in a room full of white people?"
ReplyDeleteIs that where you rub your middle finger slyly on your face, like you're giving all the white people the bird? Obama likes that one a lot.
Why are whites always off topic? probably because they are so dumb. Black employment got worse after obama became president is that what you said? Whites own majority of businesses why are they letting black people off more. Why are blacks ALWAYS the last to be hired and first to be fired? Minirities already know whites became even more pissed when obama went into office. When whites mention black unemployment rates they are admitting what was true all alone were the first ones to get fired, thanks for confirming what we already know crackers.
