~George Barnard Shaw~
You know things are going bad for you when Joe Biden of all people is letting your words speak for themselves to his advantage. Poor Mitt, he made a great effort to keep cameras and microphones out of those fund raisers with the wealthy few, but then he fooled around and pissed off Jimmy Carter's grandson by talking about his grandpa. (Always keep an eye on the help, Mitt)
In that now infamous video, Mitt wrote off forty seven percent of the people in America by saying that they are all basically freeloaders with a victimhood mentality. They are people who do not contribute their fair share of taxes. (Forty seven percent?!) Now we know why Mitt's idea of where the middles class starts and ends in this country is so out of touch.) Mitt, of course, is wrong. The truth of the matter is that ninety percent of entitlements in this country will go to seniors, people who are disabled, and working households. In other words, some of the very people Mitt might just need to beat Obama this November. Mitt and those other fat cats in the room were all thinking Reagan welfare Queen. They were thinking that a sizable amount of that forty seven percent belonged to *clearing throat* certain groups of people who tend to congregate in urban areas. Sadly for them, that forty seven percent includes a whole lot of people and not only urban folks.
Amy Davidson writing for The New Yorker does a wonderful job of breaking down Mitt's problem:
"The perfect concentricity of the income-tax-paying and the Republican-voting circles does not bear scrutiny. But the pliability of that number also says a great deal about Romney’s world view—the transitive property of wealth—and will make it hard for him to say (though he tried) that he was only talking about his lack of concern for votes, not for lives. That forty-seven per cent of Americans, by virtue of their tax treatment, “believe that they are victims”; think they are entitled “to you name it”; and are not even persuadable on the question of voting for anyone with the tax policies Romney offers: they are thinking not about growth or their country but their little check. What they are entitled to, in Romney’s view, is only contempt.
Does Romney think that this is why people will or won’t vote for him? Then he will lose this election. (There are people who have never worried about money who are attached to the idea that no one should starve in America.) It will not be lost on anyone that forty-seven per cent is a very big number. There has been a fair amount of discussion about how high the income level that is considered “middle class” by both candidates has become, to some two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. But one thing that is striking about the video is how many people Romney does not consider to be middle class—how many he lumps into the dismissible poor.
And how can they stop being poor? Simply and only by taking “personal responsibility.” And this connects with something else Romney related in the video: the story of his own wealth.
'I have inherited nothing. There is a perception, “Oh, we were born with a silver spoon, he never had to earn anything and so forth.” Frankly, I was born with a silver spoon, which is the greatest gift you can have: which is to get born in America.'
Romney was the son of a governor and an auto executive who gave him a wealth of connections, a private education, college tuition, a stock portfolio that he lived on while in graduate school, help buying a first house. That he recognizes the value of none of these things is both dismaying and discouraging for anyone who thinks that he will be able to do much to actually encourage opportunity in America. He is clear enough about one difference money can make in life, when he tells those present, “Frankly, what I need you to do is to raise millions of dollars,” and talks about how many foreign customers his campaign consultants have had. But Romney did, in the video, talk about a disadvantage that he feels he has labored under: had his father “been born of Mexican parents, I’d have a better shot of winning this.” [Source]
Mitt, of course, is hoping that this too will pass. The country is pretty much divided down the middle and his people will not vote for the beige guy. Fortunately for Mitt, gaffes don't cause candidates to lose elections. Unfortunately for Mitt, the inability to connect does.

If this were still America, Obama would be forced to resign. Just after midnight Saturday morning, authorities descended on the Cerritos home of the man believed to be the filmmaker behind the anti-Muslim movie that has sparked protests and rioting in the Muslim world. By sending brownshirted enforcers to engage in a midnight knock at the door of a man for the non-crime of embarrassing the President of the United States and his administration, President Obama violated his oath to defend the Constitution.
ReplyDeleteHe must resign or be jailed.
Prez. Carter's grandson released the 47% Mittens video?
ReplyDeleteBawhahahahaha!!!!!!
His entitled ass is toast!!!
Romney has gotten a lot of grief over the campaign season because he is a rich politician. Although he comes from a minority religion, Mormonism is the wrong one to be born into. He should have been Jewish.
ReplyDeleteIf Romney was Jewish many of the attack lines would not be aired in public because of the anti-semitic backlash it would engender. Making rich guy jokes would be verboten as it would harken back to old Jewish stereotypes. Romney's hawkish stance on the Middle East would be understandable. His deep religious roots would be accepted. Comedians would have a heart attack as they would be unable to mock a black guy or a Jew.
I predict that Romney would be leading in the polls by a decent amount--4-5 points--if he were only a Jew.

Oh. I see now.
Because he is not pro-dependency?
It really doesn't matter who wins this election, America is done as a nation.
ReplyDeleteJust say that Romney were to win and a rosy scenario unfolded, that this made business people open up their wallets and hire, that Obamacare was repealed and something else much less "grand" and intrusive replaced it and so on. Say the economy started a real recovery with the debt crises being addressed, spending cut, entitlements reformed, and so on. Would this do anything to please the other half of the people who voted Obama? Would the "Field Negro" demographic adjust their world view at all?
That is, are we irrevocably divided into two diametrically opposed camps when it comes to our belief about how large and how active government should be in our lives? About how active judges should or shouldn't be? About how flexible our Constitution is or is not?
If we are, then it seems we cannot coexist: there simply isn't enough to hold us together.
When that happens, it's useless to talk about "right" and "wrong," isn't it? One doesn't expect a Frenchman to behave as an Irishman or to share the same cultural values. Then why do we now expect that a country as diverse as this will be any better suited to share values that hold us together?
I am sick of working for people who live in my neighborhood in a house that is valued the same as mine only to find that they are repsonsible for paying only 1) 1/3 of the rent; 2) that their food is paid for; 3) that all their medical, dental, and vision needs met w/out a dollar's contribution from them; 4) that the county gives them free vet service for several procedures for their pets; 5)that their children are given free breakfasts and lunches five days a week and babysitting service after school is over; 6) that their children are in classes that have the lowest student-teacher ratios...and I won't even list all the other educational services their kids are offered that are incredibly expensive and show no results; 7) that their cell phones are paid for by others and their bills subsidized; 8) that they sit on their asses wasting "retraining" money ...all these things and more, and I pay for them while they take and take and take and teach their kids to take it all for granted and be as lazy, as inept as they.
When values and behavior are this divided, the house cannot stand. Two separate countries are down the road at some point. I don't know how or when it will happen, but I no longer think a civil war of some sort is the silly notion of silly people any more.
The election is about one thing and one thing only: race. Obama's performance as President is virtually irrelevant, the minorities and the far left will vote for him no matter what. They are part of the 47% and most always will be.
ReplyDeleteanon12:14am, you hit the reality nail on the head. It's too bad Field can't see the forest for the trees.
ReplyDeleteAnon@12:14, you left out the other part: the folks who I'll vote for Flipper no matter what.

One of the chief reasons American Airlines (no, AA does not refer to African Americans) is broke is fuel costs, which have doubled since Obama entered office.
ReplyDeleteIf our clown president were to allow US oil drillers to expand operations here, it's possible that oil prices would drop. Not certain. But definitely possible.
However, our idiot president would rather see more companies go bankrupt than permit the oil industry to grow, possibly preventing those bankruptices.
1. AA layoffs hit JFK
American Airlines could fire as many as 843 ground workers and mechanics at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to a state filing.
The company is required to send warning notices to anyone whose job could change or be eliminated, and 11,000 such notices went out company-wide, though the airline said it only expects to lay off about 4,400.
The airline's parent company, AMR Corp., filed for bankruptcy last November. [Crain's New York Business]
Why all the fury over the airing of the well known fact that 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax?
ReplyDeleteMoreover, do any of you clowns know the median federal income tax rate paid by Americans?
I'm sure you don't. Here it is: 5.6%. Got it? Less than 6%. Romney pays 15%.
But the top 20% of earners pays 80% of all personal income taxes in America.

ReplyDeleteTax penalty to hit nearly 6M uninsured people
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press – 23 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional budget analysts are now estimating that nearly 6 million Americans — most of them in the middle class — will have to pay a tax penalty for not getting health insurance once President Barack Obama's health care law is fully in place.
That's 2 million more than a previous estimate found, or a 50 percent increase. The average penalty will be nearly $1,200.
Starting in 2014, the new health care law requires virtually every legal resident of the U.S. to carry health insurance, or face a tax penalty. The Supreme Court upheld Obama's law as constitutional after finding that the penalty fell within the power of Congress to impose taxes.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday the penalty will raise $6.9 billion when fully in effect in 2016.

The Iranian fissile weapons program is irrelevant to their "dirty" bomb capacity. They already have plenty enough medical grade non-fissile radioactive material, the primary lethal component in radioactive "dirty" bombs, to turn urban America into death zones for generations. Medical grade radioactive particulate is lethal in miniscule doses, particularly when lodged in the lungs, and an Oklahoma City size low-explosive bomb could spread 100 lbs of it over up to 10 square miles.
