Ink and ignorance.

Please believe I am bumming today. The folks who gave us Boardwalk Empire found it necessary to rub out one of my all time favorite television characters, Giuseppe "Gyp"Colombano Rosetti. (If Bobby Cannavale doesn't get serious Emmy considerations there ought to be a congressional investigation.)"Barney Google With the Goo-Goo-Googly Eyes." Classic!

So anyway, I want to talk about this Sporting News columnist who found it necessary to rip -San Francisco 49ers QB- Colin Kaepernick because of all the ink that he is sporting. Yes, you read right; a sports writer criticizing an athlete, not for his play, but for his decision to wear tattoos.

Now, as is to be expected, the writer is being accused of racism by Dr. Boyce Watkins and others. At first glance it would seem that this is race neutral ignorance on the part of the writer. I mean wearing tattoos pretty much crosses all racial and demographic lines here in America. But then, after reading more of what he wrote, I might have to agree with folks accusing this moron of having a problem when it comes to matters of race.

"The column’s opening line, (written by David Whitley) makes an immediate comparison between Kaepernick’s ink and inmates at a California state prison:
“San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick is going to be a big-time NFL quarterback. That must make the guys in San Quentin happy.”
Whitley didn’t stop there:
“[Kaepernick] is the CEO of a high-profile organization, and you don’t want your CEO to look like he just got paroled.”
Whitley also draws a line between the tattoos of white quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Alex Smith and the tattoos of black quarterbacks Michael Vick and Terrelle Pryor:
“I realize not all NFL quarterbacks are pristine. Ben Roethlisberger has a “COURAGE” tattoo on the right side of his upper body. Smith has one honoring his Serbian heritage. They can’t be seen when the players put on their uniforms.

Then there are Michael Vick and Terrelle Pryor. Neither exactly fit the CEO image, unless your CEO has done a stretch in Leavenworth or has gotten Ohio State on probation over free tattoos.”
In other words, not all tattoos are created equal." [Source]

Actually, Mr. Whitley, all tattoos are created equal.

Still, I am used to folks like David Whitley making ignorant statements on matters of race. What I will never get used to are folks like David Whitley trying to justify it by playing the "some of my best friends", card.

"Shortly after the column was published, Jason McIntyre of influential sports blog The Big Lead tagged Whitley as a “racist” and nearly all hope for constructive criticism or discussion was lost.

Instead of acknowledging that his column was ill-informed, untimely and offensive to many, Whitley chose to deflect. Whitley chose to declare his non-racism.

Whitley chose to reveal he has two black daughters through adoption.
Finally, via Twitter, Whitley chose to sarcastically refer to himself as “David" Duke,” the former KKK grand wizard:

Actually, if i am going to be honest, I respect David Duke more than this clown. He wouldn't try to deflect from his ignorance by claiming that he has black friends or black adopted children. You know exactly where folks like David Duke are coming from. David Whitley, on the other hand, no so much.

Dear Mr Field, when are you going to post something of substance that is wholesome and good for mind and heart? Is this post about tattoos the best you can do?

Being Black it is no surprise to me that my peeps are going to have a lot more tattoos on their body than Whites. That's just the way our culture and black community is. Hell, a lot of our peeps even dress gaudy. Hence, many Blacks tattooing their bodies will be gawdy and over-the-top. Let's put it this way:

Blacks who tattoo their bodies aren't conservatives. Clearly they are extreme leftists who, in fact, resemble people in prison.

So lay off Whitley for seeing what we don't want to see ourselves. It's the same old story: We talk loud, wear pants around our knees, cuss, kill the English language with misplaced verbs, adjectives and lousy pronunciations.

And when Whites imitate us on youtube, or write a sports column about us, that depicts what we look and sound like we call them racists.

Pleeeese! Blacks want to look like idiots and want the world to pretend that they don't look like fools? GET REAL. The 49er quarterback DOES have tattoos that will rival the tattoos on any prisoner in San Quentin. THAT'S THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH.

Kaepernick is at least half white, probably more than half, so criticizing his tattoos can't be racist.

It's a new rule, passed by the NFL.

What of these Mr. Whitley? Where is your outrage at them?
He is not a CEO...he's a pro football player.
What YOU are Mr. Whitley is questionable.

Hmmmmm. I thought the Boardwalk part was pretty good. I kinda enjoyed Gyp. He made me laugh. And Chalky and Al Capone gained mutual respect. Wasn't that uplifting?

  7. Dear Field,

WHAT??!! No comments regarding the Eagles vs. "America's Team"? :) I have read all of your "Cowgirls" comments in the past, so I couldn't resist the opportunity.*grin* Anywho, I really don't like being steered away from what we really need to concentrate on,(i.e. the fiscal cliff..young Jordan in Florida, the Susan Rice heist) by some racist sports writer's comment. I look forward to President Obama digging his heels in and supporting this brilliant, well qualified woman.

I’m not a prophet, nor a son of a prophet, but it’s clear to see where our nation may be heading. Beginning with the so called Fiscal Cliff, any remaining Republican credibility in the House of Representatives is going to be destroyed no matter what they do. If they allow increased tax revenue they’ll alienate their political base and embolden liberal demands for even more. If they require immediate, substantial and responsible budget cuts with entitlement reform they’ll be savaged by the media, Senate, and Obama for being heartless obstructionists concerned only for the rich. This pattern will repeat itself through the media and Obama’s bully pulpit megaphones until the midterm elections.

To end the current political status quo and finish transforming America, Obama must control both Congressional houses, and have a super majority in the Senate for treaty ratifications. If this happens, there’s little to prevent the use of treaties and United Nations mandates to end our nation’s exceptionalism and effectively submit our sovereignty to an international order. History would say Obama should lose Congressional seats in 2014. However, historical precedent isn’t meaningful when enough brute force and negative messaging is applied, which we should expect over the next two years.

What would loss of sovereignty mean? For starters: demonizing gun ownership; child rights over parental rights; drastic limits on carbon emissions; the world’s finest military unilaterally disarmed; international courts superseding ours; and our financial resources plundered through socialist re-distribution schemes. We’re the last best hope for world peace, religious freedom, and individual rights. If we subject ourselves to a global collective, there’s nowhere else to turn.

Who’s the most qualified to head up a new world order - the man that dismantled the only threat to it. Consider also, Obama is a prototypical global leader much of the world can relate to: no real allegiance to any nation (globalist); racially half black and half white; Christian by choice (though denying its orthodoxy); and very deferential to Islam. The near idolatrous belief in Obama’s words instead of his actions (Matthew 7:20; 2 Timothy 4:3-4) is a foretaste of a world willing to accept an eloquent but hollow leader that can exercise global economic control, even if it means destruction of individual liberties (Revelation 13:16-17).

I know this post isn't really about Boardwalk Empire, but may I add that the last episode wasn't the best. The one right before that had to be. Why? Because they finally gave Chalky White some reasonable air time. Besides, it was time for Rosetti to die. We saw it coming.

This post is a loser on so many counts. What a waste of time when our nation is on a fiscal cliff and yet to have a Secretary of State with Integrity and honesty. Susan Rice is NOT the one. Her character is shady at best.

Field, I know you like to delve into trivia racism but fyi, right now America is on the brink.

Interesting usage of the word schwarz; schwarzer, by the Eddie Cantor charater to describe Black singer/actors.

    Schwarzveld, schwarzwald means black forest.

But when it comes to white people with Negroe ancestry as in Schwarzkopf, and Schwarzenegger, all of a sudden Schwarz does not mean Black.

Field your post highlights how ridiculous Blacks get with racism and why racism has become an everliving joke.

You couldn't shut him up with calling him your favorite thing - racist - so now he is the ignorant one. Because he doesn't align with black group/hide speech.

Funny how guys like you think that if you deny things, they go away. They don't - everyone just questions your brains and understands why those who live with the problems can never solve them without someone from outside handling it.

How can a man who chooses to adopt, raise and support two black orphans hate black people? Explain using your super secret racist decoder ring please.

Are there not a plethora of thugs in the NFL? Such as Michael Vick (no sorry the U.S doesn't condone or promote third world practices of animal torture and fighting, in fact we know people who torture animals are sick puppies) What have other players done recently? Black players that is, beat their wives, Gun charges, violence in clubs, selling coke, child abandonment, DUI's and on and on...

What do convicts and those in the thug life do in prison and what does anyone with a brain notice about repeat offenders? Jailhouse tats. Yes, Jailhouse tats.

So we know repeat criminals tend to get jailhouse tats.

We know that many NFL/NBA stars are still glorified thugs who can never shake off their culture.
We also know that Money apparently wasn't the problem, they get bucketloads and are still thugs until they piss it away. So poverty is no longer an excuse.

Yet you want us to believe the guy who refuses to be shut up with your typical race card tactic is the ignorant one?

You don't know what to think you say? Yes, you don't.

It's a clock in England - does it have jailhouse tattoos?

Ben seems to be a thug as well. Do you expect White people to give him the same pass you give for someone being Black? Is it racist for you to notice? I don't think so.

Or would anyone Black be racist for noticing?

Apply standards/morals and see if they live up to covering all angles, if not you might just be the racist one and not some guy who actually adopted 2 black kids.

  24. I was so glad to see the end of Gyp. He was the most offensive, obnoxious, misogynistic character I've seen in a long time...oh, maybe since Dennis Hopper's "Blue Velvet" character which I've tried to erase from my mind for 20+ years.

I really like the show. It's different. That said, the violence is gratuitous. I am a believer in media influencing behaviour, to some extent. Anyway, all things considered, I'm glad they offed the crazy brothel owner/mother/grandmother. I think Gretchen Mol deserves an Emmy. She believedly creeped me out. They somehow manage to make Nucky sympathetic even though he's a murderer. That's the beauty of great story writing and film.

    @Field, naysue, shady grady

Just checking back in. Chalky White is the type of person that you do not fuck with. Chalky has that aura about him. I think Boardwalk Empire expresses this very good(as does the actor). Chalky is the Negro that white people fear, because when you bring it to him, you better be prepared to die in the process.

Hey... even Al Capone recognised an Apex Preditor when he saw one.
