Most of us black folks understand that quite a few folks here in America share the sentiments of the cartoonist, but just do a better job of keeping their racist jokes and attitudes among themselves or while trolling on the internet.
Throw in the fact that it's a conservative newspaper and it's pretty much a given that they are going to be insensitive when it comes to these types of matters.
Still, what I really found amusing about this entire episode was the actions of the person who drew the cartoon and his employer in the aftermath of it.
"Boston Herald cartoonist Jerry Holbert apologized Wednesday morning for what he described as a “naive” reference that many took as a racist jab at President Obama.
The cartoon, which ran in Wednesday’s papers, was a take on the recent revelations that an intruder got farther into the White House than originally thought.
It shows Obama, surprised, brushing his teeth as a strange man sits in the bathtub behind him and asks whether the president has “tried the new watermelon flavored toothpaste.”
Many on the Web saw the watermelon reference as racist in regard to an African-American president, and Wednesday morning a contrite Holbert took to Boston Herald Radio to explain himself.
“I had no intention at all of offending anybody. I thought this was a very lighthearted cartoon,” Holbert said, describing how he selected the flavor because he likes watermelon-flavored things, including candy. “Naive, stupid, those kinds of things I understand. But racist I’m definitely not.”
Holbert also addressed the fact that a syndicate had asked him to change the flavor to raspberry (he agreed to do it), citing a racial concern.
He said he disagreed with that assessment, but should have called into the Herald to change the cartoon there as well.
“It was stupid on my part, but, you know, racism is sort of innately stupid, and I will not participate in that,” he said.
“His cartoon satirizing the US Secret Service breach at the White House has offended some people and to them we apologize,” the statement said. “His choice of imagery was absolutely not meant to be hurtful.”
Huh? Did he really say that he really likes "watermelon- flavored things" and that he was too naïve to understand the negative racial connotations that this word invokes? OK then. Now I am really offended, because not only does this guy think that all black people like watermelon (which I, for one, do not. Now fried chicken on the other hand....) but he also thinks that we are all stupid as well.
But hey, he is not alone. When you work for like-minded people it will all work out for you in the end.
So anyway, here comes the obligatory (non- apology) apology from his employer:
"His cartoon satirizing the U.S. Secret Service breach at the White House has offended some people and to them we apologize. His choice of imagery was absolutely not meant to be hurtful. We stand by Jerry, who is a veteran cartoonist with the utmost integrity."
Of course you do. We did not expect you to do anything else.

Blacks like chicken and watermelon, have big lips, nappy hair . Do you deny any of that?
ReplyDeleteYou is what you is, forbidding people to notice doesn't change anything. It just makes us think you are hysterically hyper- sensitive and delusional.
Dang. Maybe I need to read here more often, because if Anon@8:14 PM was offering up some snark, I missed that parody boat.
ReplyDeleteAs for the cartoon under discussion, there are two versions. One has the intruder in the tub mentioning raspberry toothpaste. All of which pretty much shows the 'cartoonist' knew what was appropriate and what sludge would fly in a conservative rag.
Very true, Mr Field, this cartoon wasn't the worst we've seen and yes, maybe we need to keep our powder dry for the truly offensive. But then again, why let any of the BS fly, when we have time in a slow news/killing day to address racism at all levels?
Brother Field, you are too sensitive. This is White America and Whites will always see us as whipping slaves who live only by THEIR evil graces. God's grace is only for them.
ReplyDeleteWe really need to stop giving a damn what these wretched assholes say. They WILL say it and then apologize. Isn't that the way of post-racial White America?
Whites have learned to "apologize", feign ignorance, but continue to hurl racist remarks at Blacks. THAT WON'T EVER CHANGE. They haven't the slightest idea of what it feels like to be Black in racist America. Furthermore, they don't give a damn because it doesn't affect them one bit.
So, Blacks need to not give a damn what racist Whites say. Their words don't mean anything...NOTHING. Please take this to heart.
We are still in the Jim Crow days where the character of Whites are the same: Evil and Ugly.

--------------------------------------
It does affect them, when you push into their neighborhoods, their schools, their communities, against their will and desires to associate with people of their choosing, just like blacks like to associate with people "who look like them" when it suits them.
And then you're surprised when there's "friction".
There are lots of voluntarily diverse neighborhoods, but if people don't want to have diversity forced on them, it shouldn't be forced.
We are still in the Jim Crow days where the character of Whites are the same: Evil and Ugly.

So, why don't you stay as far away as possible from those "evil and ugly" whites?

Well, yeah.
And I bet you anons are geniuses. Can't even think of a clever name. Ha!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am still able to move about. Can't find no tennis partners from the early post- civil rights days. Tennis was a status symbol for the newly educated Blacks. My peers, going to H(W)SU, emulated the white culture, so I, as a grown man after the war,(19710) was surprised how I liked the sport.
ReplyDeleteAfter all we had Arthur Ashe from Richmond, Va. as a player that was able to show that yes Blacks could play tennis. I think now there is a second French Black player. I doubt if ever again an AA play tennis at the levels of today. I hope I am wrong.
I am commenting today about the Federal government found no evidence to charge George Zimmerman with a civil rights crime. I look at NCIS, Criminal Minds and others and I must say that the government must send out the JV league to not exonerate or charge.
just like the many, many cases of MY PAST that I was awaiting some justice. Only thing I know was one set of white men was not going to tarnish another group of white men in behest of justice or Black people's pain. I still carry much pain because a few of the men killed unarmed and handcuffed were friends of mine.
So once again I UNDERSTAND why it would be tragic for the police to be charged. it would break the order of long standing norms in America society. The police has ALWAYS been the enforcer for the white race. And I don't see this changing. Albeit it seem that whites with no social power can be also placed in AA status.
Seeing that I was kindly invited, I will comment after I read ALL the daily posting. The GZ thing brought back the same feeling of the pas. The local police has ALWAYS used the FEDS as our(AAs) pacifier. We were released into the sordid and dirty hands of the Fed Gov about 165 years ago and still, some display a child-like relationship to a Government that solely exist for itself.

I have the same feelings from the past. Those Jim Crow days left an indelible imprint. I had high hopes when the Civil Rights Act was passed. They have been dashed today.
The national psyche of America still remains unchanged. If anything, racism against Blacks has grown to unbearable proportions that it's hard to keep the feelings of the abuse of white injustice down.
We are still powerless, despite Obama as President and Eric Holder as Attorney General. Holder is no Thurgood Marshall or Johnny Cochran, and I wonder why he is leaving at a prime time while the Ferguson murder and abuse still rages on.
OH! The horror! I'm glad the racial grievance industry was quick to act before more blacks were victimized by the cartoon!
ReplyDeleteWhy is the conservative media insensitive to the rules of racist cartoons?
The rules are so simply-
Only if the cartoonist is liberal and is employed by the liberal media-can he/she draw a racist cartoon.
Racist cartoons are only kool if they are mocking black/hispanic/asian Republicans.
Most black folks understand this.
Most white liberals understand this.
It's pretty much a given the conservative media will never follow the left's double racial standards.

ReplyDeleteAnother method is disease infection through bio-weapons such as Ebola and AIDS, which are race targeting weapons. There is a weapon that can be put in a room where there are Black and White people, and it will kill only the Black and spare the White, because it is a genotype weapon that is designed for your genes, for your race, for your kind.

AP POLL: MAJORITY HARBOR PREJUDICE AGAINST BLACKS
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON (AP) -- Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of 'Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not'.
Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some people's more favorable views of blacks.
Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.
In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.
"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.
Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.
The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.
Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.
"We have this false idea that there is uniformity in progress and that things change in one big step. That is not the way history has worked," said Jelani Cobb, professor of history and director of the Institute for African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut. "When we've seen progress, we've also seen backlash."
Obama has tread cautiously on the subject of race, but many African-Americans have talked openly about perceived antagonism toward them since Obama took office. As evidence, they point to events involving 'police brutality' or cite 'bumper stickers,' 'cartoons' and 'protest posters that mock the president as a lion or a monkey, or lynch him in effigy.'
"Part of it is growing polarization within American society," said Fredrick Harris, director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University. "The last Democrat in the White House said we had to have a national discussion about race. There's been total silence around issues of race with this president. But, as you see, whether there is silence, or an elevation of the discussion of race, you still have polarization. It will take more generations, I suspect, before we eliminate these deep feelings."
Overall, the survey found that by virtue of racial prejudice, Obama could lose 5 percentage points off his share of the popular vote in his Nov. 6 contest against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But Obama also stands to benefit from a 3 percentage point gain due to pro-black sentiment, researchers said. Overall, that means an estimated net loss of 2 percentage points due to anti-black attitudes.

Or is it given numerous murders of Black men over the past 10 years.

AP Poll continued:
ReplyDeleteThe poll finds that racial prejudice is not limited to one group of partisans. Although Republicans were more likely than Democrats to 'express' racial prejudice in the questions measuring explicit racism (79 percent among Republicans compared with 32 percent among Democrats), the 'implicit test found little difference between the two parties.' "That test showed a majority of both Democrats and Republicans held anti-black feelings (55 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans), as did about half of political independents (49 percent).

More info re: AP Poll about Prejudices:
ReplyDelete"The AP developed the surveys to measure sensitive racial views in several ways and repeated those studies several times between 2008 and 2012.
The explicit racism measures asked respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements about black and Hispanic people. In addition, the surveys asked how well respondents thought certain words, such as "friendly," "hardworking," "violent" and "lazy," described blacks, whites and Hispanics.
The same respondents were also administered a survey designed to measure implicit racism, in which a photo of a black, Hispanic or white male flashed on the screen before a neutral image of a Chinese character. The respondents were then asked to rate their feelings toward the Chinese character. Previous research has shown that people transfer their feelings about the photo onto the character, allowing researchers to measure racist feelings even if a respondent does not acknowledge them.
Results from those questions were analyzed with poll takers' ages, partisan beliefs, views on Obama and Romney and other factors, which allowed researchers to predict the likelihood that people would vote for either Obama or Romney. Those models were then used to estimate the net impact of each factor on the candidates' support.
All the surveys were conducted online. Other research has shown that poll takers are more likely to share unpopular attitudes when they are filling out a survey using a computer rather than speaking with an interviewer. Respondents were randomly selected from a nationally representative panel maintained by GfK Custom Research.
Andra Gillespie, an Emory University political scientist who studies race-neutrality among black politicians, contrasted the situation to that faced by the first black mayors elected in major U.S. cities, the closest parallel to Obama's first-black situation. Those mayors, she said, typically won about 20 percent of the white vote in their first races, but when seeking reelection they enjoyed greater white support presumably because "the whites who stayed in the cities ... became more comfortable with a black executive."
"President Obama's election clearly didn't change those who appear to be sort of hard-wired folks with racial resentment," she said.
Negative racial attitudes can manifest in policy, noted Alan Jenkins, an assistant solicitor general during the Clinton administration and now executive director of the Opportunity Agenda think tank.
"That has very real circumstances in the way people are treated by police, the way kids are treated by teachers, the way home seekers are treated by landlords and real estate agents," Jenkins said.
"I marched in the 60's and there were uncle toms, Stephens, slave catchers and house negroes who hated MLK. They thought he was stirring up stuff that would ruin everything the wm 'might' want to help us with."
