Going along to get along.

I read somewhere that black Americans are suffering from "racial battle fatigue".  Sadly, given what has been happening in our country over the past few months, it 's not hard to see why.

And still, through it all, black folks remain the most forgiving and God- fearing people I know. Just check out the images and commentaries from the people on the ground in Charleston. All that hugging. All that loving. All that praying together. It takes a special kind of person to endure all that and still have love in your heart. (I keep hearing Hillary pandering to a church full of black folks with that James Cleveland quote in my head.)

A lot of my brothers and sisters here in America are built like that. I guess it's a kind of coping mechanism. How else are they going to survive? Better go along to get along. Don't rock the boat, look down when you talk, and step to the side when crossing paths on the sidewalk.
Lord knows we don't want to set off another racist and have him act out his hatred in a very real way.
Although, given what happened just today in Richmond, Virginia, it might already be too late.

I think I posted this anecdote once on this blog, but this is a good time to tell it again.

So I am playing golf at this very exclusive course in Gonzales, Louisiana. A friend of mine is a hot shot lawyer down there and he happens to be a member. On one of my visits down there we got a foursome together and he invited us to play a round at his club.

One of the people in the foursome was the head of the local NAACP in a very large town in Louisiana at the time. One or two of the guys in the group were hackers, so our round was not moving along at a very good pace.

Behind us a group of gentlemen started yelling for us to speed it up, and someone in the group threatened to call the golf course Marshall to have us thrown out. My friend, the member, told them to play threw, but they were having none of it.

Eventually someone from their group approached us and asked us if there was a problem. Why is it, he wanted to know, couldn't our group play faster? This is when it got interesting, because, well, I just couldn't take it anymore. I told him in no uncertain terms to go f*^* himself and that we will take our time and enjoy our round of golf because we were still within the time limits set by the course Marshall. And that if he and his group didn't want to play through, as they have every right to do, they could wait.

My friend, Mr. NAACP, was beside himself. He wasn't mad at the arrogant prick and his friends; he was mad at me for having the nerve to talk back to them. "Wayne, that's not how we do things down here. Would it have hurt to apologize and explain that we have a couple of guys in our group who aren't very good?" My reply went something like this: Actually Alvin, it would have. And if you are the president of the NAACP down here I feel sorry for your members.

Needless to say that our relationship has been strained ever since. The point is, even as the leader of the NAACP,  he saw nothing wrong with taking this guy's crap. Maybe it was out of fear. (I later learned that the guy was some powerful and wealthy businessman in South Louisiana.) Maybe it was out of  some form of survivalist conditioning or Stockholm Syndrome. Who knows? In his world that's just the way it was.

I don't know. On one level I admire the courage and the resilience of the people of Charleston. And yet, on another level, I just keep going back to that golf course. "Wayne, that's not how we do things  down here."

Well maybe it's time y'all started doing things a little differently.

    Mr. Fields Sir,

You were wrong to react the way you did. Matters are not handled like that in the South. I understand your anger, but such a reaction puts you on the moral low ground and embarrasses those with you. One might even suspect an anger control issue. I don't say that to criticize you but to point out that where you are is important in choosing your actions. Don't be so quick to drop F-Bombs. You can't take those back or the problems they cause.

Have you noticed the grace with which the people of Charleston, especially the families of the victims, have shown in recent days? Such gracefulness makes the difference between a true and diverse society peacefully coexisting and a mere collection of various factions always at odds. This grace, often mistaken by northerners as docility or weakness, is one main difference between northerners and southerners. Your friend sounds like a true gentleman.

Hard to say. Maybe this is just some of that Southern gentility us Northerners are always hearing about. (Although, I have to say that it does not sound like the golf group behind you were showing any gentility at all. Just rude as hell.)

On the other hand, it truly might be some of that Negro deference that used to be standard in the land of Dixie (hop off the sidewalk when you see a white man comin', etc.) It's hard not to think of Emmett Till, who met a grisly end because no one warned him that being rude to a white woman in Mississippi would get a much different reaction than it did back home in Chicago.

So, the Council of Conservative Citizens is back in the news big time, after having inspired Dylann Roof's massacre (and attempt at starting a race war) in South Carolina.

It should be noted that the CCC's bigotry is not at all subtle. Their website used to make it pretty obvious how much they fostered hate for black people (although they may have taken some of the hate speech down in the wake of the shooting). They were proud to say stuff like the following:

"'God is the author of racism. God is the One who divided mankind into different types. ... Mixing the races is rebelliousness against God.'
    — Council of Conservative Citizens website, 2001"

They referred to themselves as "paleoconservatives" -- but c'mon, they're just racists. Here's the SPLC's review of the CCC:

    http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/groups/council-of-conservative-citizens

And yet many GOP luminaries were best buds with the group, going way back, although they didn't make a big fuss about it. (Wonder why?)

Anyhow, now Republican presidential candidates are scrambling to give back the campaign contributions they have recently taken from the Council of Conservative Citizens. Being associated with a hate group admired by a mass killer is not exactly a great look on the campaign trail. (http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jun/21/dylann-roof-manifesto-charlston-shootings-republicans)

The leader of the CCC has given:

    $8,500 to Sen. Ted Cruz

    $1,750 to Sen. Rand Paul

$1,500 to ex Sen. Rick Santorum

He's also given money to other prominent Republicans:

$2,000 to Representative Steve King of Iowa

$1,500 to Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas

$1,000 to Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona

$3,200 to batshit-crazy former congresswoman Michele Bachmann

It would not surprise me if this is not the end of this affair. A lot more CCC skeletons may be about to drop out of Republican closets. As they say, when you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

Fun times, if you're a political reporter. Or a Democrat.

Down South, Negroes have a yes massa boss mentality. Blacks don't talk back to Whites no matter how abusive they are. Blacks in the South are docile and they are cowards...period. Why didn't Mr. NAACP have something to say about the rude ass white man? Or maybe he was telling you that the white man's behavior IS HOW they do things down South. But Blacks have to bow their heads when a cracker starts berating them....it's sickening.

Your NAACP friend is an old Southern Negro with a plantation mentality and great fear of Whites in his heart. Southern Blacks are so weak, frail and just plain cowards when it comes to standing up for their dignity and rights as a human being. Forget about him.

You don't need a relationship with some Negro who will turn on you at any time because you won't take some white cracker's bullshit. Up North we call your NAACP friend a sell-out and an uncle tom.

Brother Field, do me a favor and stay the hell out of Louisiana before you get hanged down there. And believe me, that's 'the way they do things down there.'

"I don't know. On one level I admire the courage and the resilience of the people of Charleston. And yet, on another level, I just keep going back to that golf course. "Wayne, that's not how we do things down here." "

You got it right. From a psychological perspective, people don't forgive someone that quickly for taking the lives of their love ones. They get angry and enraged first, and forgiveness is NOT in the equation. That's just being human. However, Blacks in the South have been so used to being treated as less than human they actually act less than human. In other words they act the way Whites want them to act, which is "be nice to Whites, no matter what we do to you Negroes."

Hell, Field, the Negroes of SC couldn't even prevent the Confederate flag from flying at their Capitol. That should tell you about the character and nature of Blacks in SC.

BTW, have you read "All God's Children"? SC was the slave capitol of the South...check it out. In that book Strom Thurmond's family owned more slaves than anybody. They probably hung more Negroes than anybody too.

Bottom line is if you are Black in SC with a family history going back to slavery and Jim Crow, you are probably a docile Negro who is scared to death of Whites and furthermore, accept White superiority from experience.

Mr Field, I wonder how forgiving those African Americans will be when the trial of Roof begins?

FYI, I agree with anon1:20am. It is damn near impossible for a group of folks to forgive the shootings of love ones by a racist SOB. Hell, they haven't even shown any anger whatsoever. That is not human. Their reaction was spiritually sick. I mean, they forgave Roof faster than Christ himself would have.

I think it's going to come back to bite them in the ass as a big ass lie. There's something wrong with those folks.

I DO believe that FP is from the South and she is a church goer. While FP has not stated where she is from down South I am going to take a guess and say, it's SC.

So is it possible for black folks in SC forgive the most racist and evil people on earth for killing their love ones? I really don't believe it. I think they told a most outrageous unbelievable LIE.

So what do the Scriptures have to say?

One time we were doing the Sharpton march in DC for the dedication of the MLK statue and somebody started singing it and I was so uncomfortable I told em we need to sing another song they asked "what should we sing" and I suggested "Fight the Power".

  13. About forgiveness, I think you can define the word pretty much anyone of several ways. I think the relatives used the word to mean the process of not giving in to hatred, or of not seeking revenge if you like.

I'm not a christian, but I think that the relatives of the dead in this case represent America at its very best. Dylan Roof represents the very worst. A whiny, self-obsessed young narcissist, born into privilege, who managed to convince himself that African americans were the source of all his problems, rather than his own sociopathy.

  15. You're getting some above-average comment today, Field (where are the crazies today?). I just want to say that as a former believer, I say the loving, forgiving reactions of the Charleston flock was exactly what the early Christians' would have been. Drove Caligula and Nero to paroxysms of sadism, back then, being forgiven even while they used the martyrs as human candles. Had nothing to do with race or class, either.

I would personally love to have been a fly on your five-iron to see Mr. Louisiana Bigbucks'facial expression when you told him off.

Did everyone here assume that your golf party was all black? Or would that have made a difference either way?

Glad you read the book. I agree it should be required reading by the entire country. I am surprised that they aren't using that book in schools and colleges for history and study.

Santoyana once said, "If you don't know your history you are doomed to repeat it."
Well, I believe we have entered that cycle of repetition. It can't be otherwise. Your friend(former friend I hope) is very much caught in it.

I am not a fan of the NAACP mainly because I find it totally ineffective and repeatedly fails to help Black people. Of course, your friend Mr NAACP is a classic example of why that organization isn't worth a damn. It's full of cowards and self-serving uncle toms.

From where I am standing Blacks with the mentality of Mr NAACP are playing a major role in the demise of the black race and this country. They seem to overlook and pretend to forgive any evil racist shortcomings of Whites.

I often wonder what will it take to 'awaken' and 'energize' the black race to the extent where courage and dignity is born and at the forefront of our lives? That would be a glorious day.

Well, I can dream can't I? Blacks across the country talk about Rachel Dolezal and how messed up she is. That's the kettle calling the pot black and the long line of messed up NAACP officials proves it.

The Swastika is a symbol that is synonymous with the Confederate flag and the Lynching Tree. They symbolize terrorism, racism, murder....EVIL against mankind.

Like the Nazis, Whites in SC and other states gleefully embrace evil. They justify their wrong evil acts as the 'right' thing to do by naming and labeling Blacks as detestable and 'damned' by God as not up to the level of Whites. It must be this way because no human being can do such heinous acts against another without 'first' degrading them in order to justify the wrongs of the perpetrator.

This country planted its seeds of racism over 400 years ago. That is tremendous karma against humanity that will continue to play out in the hearts of Americans for many more centuries to come.

Racism corrupts the perpetrator and it prevents the creative potential of its victims. Of course, that is what the perpetrator wants so that it can feel better about him/herself.

Superiority and domination is always the goal of racism...that's the purpose and evil of it. And make no mistake about it: Racism is Evil. It has no respect of God, religion, faith devotees, or prayer. In fact, it's favorite place to perform its great evil acts is in the House of God.

Evil is a powerful force that is taking over America in its laws, its thinking, its actions, its speech, and behavior. In these times it's hard to find any goodness where the Divine is Present. We are headed for a darkness never seen before. So much for the goodness of humans. We are not.

I'm glad those people have beliefs that help them through the tragedy, and people have the right to believe what they want anyway, but if you can forgive someone who just killed a family member you'll forgive a bank that takes your home and politicians who lie us into a war that kills your kids for Halliburton profits. Religion is about controlling people. The "get along" syndrome is real too. Sometimes you can tell someone is from the south just by their lack of confidence.

His initial reaction was to lie that such events only happen in America, implying that the Constitution is to blame. Now this:

US President Barack Obama has used the ‘n-word’ during an interview to argue that the United States has yet to overcome its issues with racism.

“Racism, we are not cured of it,” the president said. “And it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public.”

Mr Obama was being interviewed by comedian Marc Maron for a podcast that was published on Monday.

He was being interviewed by a comedian when he decided to splash some gasoline on the fire by characterizing the country that elected him as “racist.” That about sums up this tragic farce of a presidency.

Well, considering more Americans have been killed in Chiraq than in Iraq, who would want to do anything around black folks?

Paul Mooney also said white people got what they deserved in the Boston bombing. Do you agree pilotx?

"We know nothing on Earth is more satisfying than watching White racists meet blunt force trauma or death. At least Thornton had the decency to execute himself (a la Adam Lanza), sparing the world another "White Revenge" showtrial."

Do you really think Roof is going to get the death penalty? Think again, it's SC where the Confederate flag flies proudly at the Capitol. I 'bet' Blacks are assuming Roof is going to be prosecuted to the nth degree. Think again. A White justice system is lenient to Whites who kill Blacks. We have seen this over and over again for centuries, especially during these 'post-racial' times in America.

"Q: What's the difference between Bill Ayers and Dylann Roof?

A: Dylann Roof isn't a friend and colleague of an American president who enjoyed a cushy life in academia before retiring to life as the kind of author who's invited on-the-air by the mainstream media to hawk his books."

Bill Ayers isn't the friend and colleague of an American president either. Standing in the same room with someone or serving on the same committee does not make someone your friend.

    Nice try, though.

  50. Very instructive. We get insight into the mind of a white racist. Actually it never changes. Let's see, it's ok to kill 9 innocent blah people including elderly women because some dude killed white people in 2010 so tit for tat. This explains a lot. Like back in the day when a blah person would be accused of doing something so they go to the blah side of town and start lynching. SMDH

LOL, nope. It's right-wingers who are the kings of astroturfing.

    See: numerous Tea Party rallies

    See: Donald Trump's campaign kickoff

It's astonishing how often "grassroots conservative movements" turn out to be a bunch of AC-TORS hired by some corporation to serve their financial interests.

And when they're not hiring actors, they're hiring scientists. Dig into the financing of damn near any anti-global warming scientist, and you'll find a paper trail leading back to Exxon, Chevron, etc.

  70. Some specifics and some generalities.

    1. You invited them to play through and they refused, and then ordered you to play faster? I don't golf anymore because my eyesight's not good enough, but I spent much of my youth doing one of three things: playing baseball, riding my bike, and playing golf. It was bizarre for them to behave that way. Playing through was always how we handled the situation you were in. I can't even imagine any other way to deal with it.

    2. Yep, the South is different, and it ain't just your NAACP acquaintance being a chickenshit. I once worked for a company located in the very deep South, and had a brush with something a bit like you describe though not nearly as weird or unpleasant.

In the big cities of the North, you'll sometimes get accosted by this or that person handing out a leaflet. Up North, you ignore them as if they didn't exist. I'm down at Corporate one day in the South, and the same thing happens as a few of us are walking down the street. All of us white, including the person trying to handle me a leaflet.

I ignored the guy completely, as usual. The white Southerners who are with me were floored. "I can't believe you did that!" one of them said. He wasn't even mad at me. It was like I was this strange creature from Neptune. "Did what?" I replied, honestly wondering what the hell he was talking about. Thereupon I get the lecture about manners. Okey doke, I thought, when in Rome ...

    Now to some generalities.

    1. You're from the Malcom X school of race relations, and so are most of your commenters. So I shouldn't be surprised by what I read here. But the Civil Rights movement was far more a Southern movement. Martin Luther King succeeded in removing Jim Crow. Malcolm X wrote a book or two. Yep, they both got assassinated. One left a lot more behind than the other.

    2. The entire country was pretty much blown away by the families of Charleston. It was the topic of conversation last weekend among my white friends. The forgiveness! We all agreed that the families were better than we'd be, and that they were an example and an inspiration of turning anger into something else.

As I write this, the hair on the back of my neck stands up thinking of what those family members said at the bond hearing. Last weekend, all of us agreed that they'd have been within their rights to shout their heads off. But they didn't. Say what you want to about those people, and about my reaction. It won't matter. I am stunned beyond belief by how they handled themselves. Always will be.

    3. Hatred and anger is the scab that forms over a wound. A scab protects against being hurt again, but it goes away. What about hatred and anger? Does that ever go away? Just where do we wind up when we yell at each other? You call me a racist, I call you a criminal. And then we're going to solve anything?

Most are good people? Really? Then why is there so much racism and hatred in America? Why are cops abusing and killing bm? Why did all those folks in SC vote to keep that racist terrorizing flag flying on the state capitol grounds?

Oh wait, I forgot. You are looking at it from a different angle--a white angle where you are NOT terrorized and abused by the police who are supposed to protect you, NOT kill you by shooting you in the back.

Yep. I suppose there are millions of good folks in America. That's why evil has America in its grip. The 'good' do nothing so the 'evil' can flourish.

  78. Blogger 8:53 PM, I am not going to be the spokesman for every white asshole and nutcase in America. There are 320 million Americans, and what, 200 to 225 million whites? I trust most people in most places, and think that most people of all races try to live the right way in their own lives.

I don't overlook the horror. Plenty to go around. But what I just wrote is what I think. I guess I'm lucky, because I haven't been shot in the back just yet, in spite of a few times where maybe I came closer than I'd have wanted. Have you been shot in the back? How did that turn out?

  80. Field Negro, your story reminded me of an incident during my youthful days on a par-3 course. We're behind a foursome, waiting. Two guys and two girls. Right there on the 16th hole, one of the guys and one of the girls decide they'd like to get it on. They start rolling around in the grass, making out. (Oh, since this is a blog about race, I guess I need to say that everyone involved was white.)

Me, being a suburban Field Honky, I shout: "Hey! Can't you fuck her somewhere else?" (The things we say when we are young and really, really stupid.)

He gets up and stalks back straight toward me. Let's just say he was a little irked by my comment. As he approaches, I notice the tattoos and a scar on his forehead. This was what you'd call a "thug," before thugs were cool.

He was ready to take me apart, which quite frankly wouldn't have been much of a challenge. I was with two other guys, and we ran off that course. We laughed later, but not at the time.

These days, you never know who might have a gun, especially in Louisiana. Now, if you want to claim that you had a nice time after you told the guy to fuck off, well, I wasn't there and it will cost me nothing to believe you. But I still think your southern friend had it right.

Maybe not in principle, but sometimes the practicalities ought to take hold. In 20/20 hindsight, of course, might it not have been a better idea to rise above it, stand aside at the next tee, and see if they'd be willing to go ahead at that point? Playing through on the fairway is kind of a pain in the ass, from my recollection. You don't know whose ball is whose, and the rhythm gets jumbled.

Not to defend them, though. They really were wrong, but did you really have to go all George W. on them? And are you sure you didn't slice one off into the woods after your exchange of pleasantries? How about the others in your group? Did they have a nice time, or was it all about you?

  83. There's something else to say. It's something I try to remember, but too often forget, especially when someone else pulls a bonehead stunt like you described, Field Negro.

It is this: You just never know what someone else might be going through. Maybe the guy you reamed out -- justifiably, mind you -- had just lost his wife. Maybe his kid has cancer. God only knows. And, like I wrote just above, in Louisiana, maybe he's packing heat.

    "Mommy, how did Daddy die?"

"He told some white asshole on the golf course to fuck off, and the guy pulled out a gun and shot your Daddy in the heart."
