ReplyDeleteRight-wingers are really hung up on this, but it's mostly a stupid straw man argument.
Most gun control advocates aren't huge supporters of the kinds of "gun-free zones" you're talking about. Enacting a gun ban on the level of city government is almost entirely ineffectual, from a gun control perspective, because cities have open borders. Ban handguns in, say, the city of Chicago, and people can just drive a few miles outside the city borders to get one anyway.
And state-level gun restrictions are only marginally more effective The only form of "gun-free zone" that will really work is a national gun-free zone. And liberals are completely aware of this fact.
So why have some politicians fought hard to maintain these laws? Because cops like them. And cops like them, not because these laws allow them to take guns off the street, but because selective enforcement of these laws allows them to take certain gun owners off the street. This is a stop-and-frisk type motivation. If someone fits the profile of a gangbanger (and we know what that profile is), you search him, find a gun, and it's off to the pokey with him. Finding a gun is much easier than proving involvement in a complex criminal enterprise.
Take away this gun ban, and the police powers have effectively been reduced -- they can still bust people with felony records who've lost their rights to gun ownership, but this misses anyone who hasn't yet had an opportunity to land himself in the system.
This is really not so different from laws against "loitering." What is loitering? It's nothing. Loitering laws really just give cops carte blanche to round up all the undesirables (gangbangers, homeless junkies) and toss them in the klink or harass them into leaving the area.
Loitering laws and local gun bans mainly exist to be used selectively against the bad people.
Rubio might not even get in his party's debates. So I am quite sure that Hillary and Bernie aren't losing any sleep thinking about Marco (I need water) Rubio.

Class is comporting oneself with dignity, treating others with respect, standing by your words, and being a leader who considers the interests of all of the people, not just those who further your agenda. Class isn't insulting the motives and beliefs of those you disagree with. Class isn't abusing the power of your office by using agencies to harass and harm your political opponents.
