Gloom, doom, and "brutalism".

Image result for angry ted cruz images  I must confess that I am as cynical as they come, and I trust no one. It's sad to admit to such a thing, but I basically hold a very unfavorable view of humans.

But hey, I am a criminal defense attorney in a major city, and I preside over family law cases, so I have earned my cynical stripes. My question to the GOP is this: What's your excuse?

You are a major political party in what is supposed to be the most optimistic and hopeful country in the world, and yet, it's all "doom and gloom" with you guys. I could throw in "fear" in there as well.

I recently read an article  by David Brooks in the New York Times were he wrote about the "brutalism" of Ted Cruz, a man who I consider to be typical of the leading politicians on the right these days.

"In 1997, Michael Wayne Haley was arrested after stealing a calculator from Walmart. This was a crime that merited a maximum two-year prison term. But prosecutors incorrectly applied a habitual offender law. Neither the judge nor the defense lawyer caught the error and Haley was sentenced to 16 years.

Eventually, the mistake came to light and Haley tried to fix it. Ted Cruz was solicitor general of Texas at the time. Instead of just letting Haley go for time served, Cruz took the case to the Supreme Court to keep Haley in prison for the full 16 years.

Some justices were skeptical. “Is there some rule that you can’t confess error in your state?” Justice Anthony Kennedy asked. The court system did finally let Haley out of prison, after six years.

The case reveals something interesting about Cruz’s character. Ted Cruz is now running strongly among evangelical voters, especially in Iowa. But in his career and public presentation Cruz is a stranger to most of what would generally be considered the Christian virtues: humility, mercy, compassion and grace. Cruz’s behavior in the Haley case is almost the dictionary definition of pharisaism: an overzealous application of the letter of the law in a way that violates the spirit of the law, as well as fairness and mercy.

Traditionally, candidates who have attracted strong evangelical support have in part emphasized the need to lend a helping hand to the economically stressed and the least fortunate among us. Such candidates include George W. Bush, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum.

But Cruz’s speeches are marked by what you might call pagan brutalism. There is not a hint of compassion, gentleness and mercy. Instead, his speeches are marked by a long list of enemies, and vows to crush, shred, destroy, bomb them. When he is speaking in a church the contrast between the setting and the emotional tone he sets is jarring.

Cruz lays down an atmosphere of apocalyptic fear. America is heading off “the cliff to oblivion.” After one Democratic debate he said, “We’re seeing our freedoms taken away every day, and last night was an audition for who would wear the jackboot most vigorously.”

As the Republican strategist Curt Anderson observed in Politico, there’s no variation in Cruz’s rhetorical tone. As is the wont of inauthentic speakers, everything is described as a maximum existential threat." [Source]

But it's not just Ted Cruz. Watch the next republican debate and try to find a sense of optimism among the people on stage. You won't be able to do it. It will be all fire and brimstone, gloom and doom. America, if you let them tell it, is going to hell in a hand-basket, and getting their fast.

Watch Donald Trump and his brown shirt thugs get physical with someone at one of his campaign stops for just exercising their right to free speech. Or watch him single out some poor cameraman or reporter for derision from the crowd for just doing their job and earning in a year what he makes in an hour. Watch Chris Christie bully people for asking simple questions at one of his previous town hall meetings.

This is the GOP way: Meaner, angrier, and louder than those soft, kumbaya singing, hand holding, dems.  It's become the party of John Wayne, and  not a moment too soon for their base of angry Americans looking for someone to blame for all of their anger. We will be tough, mean, and heartless, because that is what is needed to keep the America we love and cherish safe.

I am still trying to figure out what the hell they are all so angry about. And I am curious to know that if having someone from the majority population in the White House will cool some of that anger. I suspect that it will, because looking at it objectively, there is absolutely nothing for them to be angry about.

Let's "Make America Great Again!" If it will make you all less angry I am all for it.

You said it yourself. You don't trust others. That is a big reason why Americans are angry. Americans are turning on one another.

Since 1972 the Chicago-based General Social Survey has been asking whether most people can be trusted, or whether “you can’t be too careful” in daily life. Four decades ago Americans were evenly split.

Now almost two-thirds say others cannot be trusted, a record high.

The Associated Press asked Americans if they placed much trust in folk they met away from home, or in the workers who swiped their payment cards when out shopping. Most said no.

Your feelings stated in the first paragraph of your post mirror the country. A sad state of affairs.

It's a scary time for conservatives, well at least in their own minds because fear sells and they only watch and listen to "their" media. Think about it, how fucking paranoid would you be if all you watched was Sean Hannity scare you with imaginary knock out games, listened to Rush Limpballs scare you with tales of BLM and NBB armies enslaving you at Walmart and read Ann Coulter and believe her bullshit about whites being some kind of master race. There is no doubt why and how these people are so paranoid and ready to piss their pants all the time. Rupert Murdoch is laughing all the way to the bank, or should I say Jerry Hall is laughing her way all the way to the bank.

Opposing voter blocs are alarmingly willing to vilify the rival party. American politics currently expose how deeply we are divided in this country.

News headlines routinely blare "Half of all Americans think this and Half of all Americans think the opposite".

We have forgotten how to compromise, our supposed political leaders most of all. They act like children who call each other names on the playground. However, calling your rivals terrorists and liars in the press has repercussions far beyond their petty rivalries.

  6. I am conservative on a lot of issues. But when running for office as a conservative becomes synonymous with insulting me and people like me, I am put in a bit of a spot.

And right now, the more that candidates can alienate me and accuse me of being less than American, the more points they seem to score.

Damn, what a sense of entitlement you have!  You think that your muslima should be able to commandeer the venue that Trump had paid for, to get her own message out over his.  As a lawyer I'm certain that you actually know better, but you'd rather play racial grievance-monger.

"This is the GOP way: Meaner, angrier, and louder than those soft, kumbaya singing, hand holding, dems."

You'd rather have someone you can push around.  Mr. BS himself let BLM hound him off the stage at his own campaign stop.  You want a lackey.

America is tired of you and your lackeys.  Try to understand that.

"And right now, the more that candidates can alienate me and accuse me of being less than American, the more points they seem to score."

Maybe if you'd talked to Farook and Malik about that, you might not have the little reputation problem you've got.  But you can fix your problem by going back to the Islamic hell-hole you hail from.  Americans have nowhere to go but here.

Mr Field, do you not understand that most of the country is NOT optimistic about America?

Do you not understand that Blacks are far more less optimistic than the GOP? The GOP has had nothing to do with the demise of Blacks during the "Obama" administration.

Why don't you take a look at Obama instead of blaming the Republicans for everything? You claim to be 'skeptical' of people but you seem to be 100% trusting when it comes to the WH.....WHY is that?

This is a little bit out of date, since it's been a few years since Glenn Beck got kicked off Fox News for scaremongering just a little bit too hard. (Apparently, there is such a thing as going too far, even for Fox.) But anyway, while Glenn Beck may have lost his mojo, the overall right-wing media modus operandi hasn't changed at all. They're still employing the Glenn Beck Method: scare the rubes absolutely shitless.

"It is quite unbelievable that a country so geographically large and demographically diverse as the USA has only two viable political parties. I mean in European countries voters have several parties to choose from."

Most European countries have governments run on a parliamentary system, and more importantly, elect their politicians by proportional representation.

We, on the other hand, use the first-past-the-post/winner-take-all method, which basically guarantees only two major political parties will control everything. (The disaster in Maine shows why: Vote sensible third-party candidate Eliot Cutler for governor; get crazypants imbecile Paul LePage. Eventually the Cutler voters will learn their lesson and never, ever vote for a third party again.)

Now, if you don't like that arrangement, I'm sure you can just ask the two major U.S. political parties to introduce proportional representation, which will just incidentally weaken the power of both of them. I'm sure they'll be happy to oblige. (Hahaha, just kidding, no they won't.)

Will it make them less angry? Maybe a little at first. But misery, hatred, and ignorance being inbred in them, it won't last long. And when there is no one else left to hate they will necessarily have to turn their hatred inward against themselves. And therein lies what is at stake in this coming election.

    Speaking of Ted Cruz ...

Donald Trump is working quite hard to make it seem like Cruz is not a natural-born citizen of the USA and therefore not eligible to be president, while also pretending it's not he himself who holds this belief. (Donald a birther? Perish the thought!) He insists he's only raising the question so that Republican voters won't be blindsided when those sneaky Democrats inevitably demand Cruz's birth certificate. By warning GOP voters not to nominate Ted, Trump is just being helpful! What a nice guy, that Trump.

Anyway, to bolster this idea of sneaky birther Democrats, Trump points to liberal Harvard law professor Lawrence Tribe (once the teacher of both Ted Cruz and Barack Obama) who allegedly claims Cruz can't be president.

But if you look at what was actually said, Tribe was quite clear that he personally believes that Cruz IS constitutionally eligible to be president. Tribe was saying that according to Ted Cruz's expressed views on how the law should be interpreted, Cruz can't be president.

In other words, Tribe wasn't offering a legal opinion on Cruz's candidacy at all. This was a schoolyard taunt: Neener-neener-neener, Ted Cruz. Take your bonkers legal philosophy, which you employ inconsistently because you're an unprincipled weasel, and stick it where the sun don't shine.

    From CNN:

"He argued that the strict, originalist legal philosophy that Cruz advocates on issues like the 2nd Amendment and gay marriage, and which his potential Supreme Court nominees would likely espouse, should disqualify him from being president.

'Ironically, the kind of justices he says he wants are the ones that say he's not eligible to run for president,' Tribe argued. 'This is important because the way this guy plays fast and loose with the Constitution, he's a fair weather originalist.'

Cruz's campaign did not respond to CNN request for comment.

'The issue is -- do the kinds of judges that he says he would insist on, the kind who would overrule Roe v. Wade, who don't believe in gay rights or women's rights, but who think the Constitution is frozen, if he really believes in their philosophy,' Tribe said. 'It's an antiquated philosophy, but it turns out Ted Cruz drops that when it doesn't serve his purpose.'"

  26. Ted Cruz is a hypocrite. He claims to be a constitutional originalist, but in 1787 "natural born American" meant born on American soil. So Cruz rests his arguments that he is a natural born American on statutes (which didn't transmit American citizenship to extra territorially born children of American Mothers until 1934) and the living constitution theories that he otherwise rejects. Unless they convenience Ted Cruz.

Why would he bother mentioning it when Iran has already agreed to release the sailors?

This minor act of aggression, along with the recent Iranian missile test and a few other examples of small-scale belligerence, is Iranian right-wingers' way of trying to throw a monkey wrench in the nuke deal, which they don't want.

Much like Republicans in the U.S., who express their displeasure about the deal through nasty rhetoric to the press and unenforceable resolutions in Congress, Iran's right-wingers don't want the deal, because protecting the nation from various enemies is the only thing that justifies those right-wingers' existence. If the Great Satan, aka the U.S., makes peace with Iran and stops being seen as so satanic, then what do the Iranian public need their wingnuts for anymore? Nothing.

"What do you say to people who say Iran … fired a warning shot of sorts towards an American ship in the last couple weeks?" CNN host Jake Tapper asked. "They test-fired, I believe, a ballistic missile in the last few weeks, and yet in a few days, they are scheduled to have a the relief of all those sanctions. The basic question being, this does not seem like a country that is ready to be welcomed back into the community of nations."
    "That's right, Jake," Earnest said.

Earnest said the U.S. has been concerned with Iran’s destabilizing behavior over the past few decades.

"That is why the United States and this president made it a priority to organize the international community, to reach an agreement with Iran that will prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon," Earnest said. "This agreement is actually the best way for us to ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon."

    Tapper bristled.

"I hear you, but they have 10 American sailors in their custody right now, Josh," Tapper said. "I think there are probably a lot of Americans watching this thinking, 'Why are we about to give them sanction relief?' They have 10 Americans in … a boat, in a cell, whatever."

"Because these were sanctions that were imposed on Iran over their nuclear program, and as soon as Iran takes the steps that they've committed to take and those steps can be verified by international nuclear experts, then we’ll know that Iran will not develop a nuclear weapon," Earnest said.

BTW, that was a pretty damn good speech last night.

Ten American military personnel were arrested and detained by Iran on Tuesday, and President Barack Obama said not a word about it during his final State of the Union address on Tuesday evening.

His administration swore up and down that Iran was just doing a solid for our sailors and Marines, whose boats, we are told, had apparently broken down. Obama’s spokesman said the capture and detention of American servicemen and servicewomen were exactly why we had to lift sanctions on Iran and bless its enrichment of uranium. His surrogates whispered to media allies that rather than provoking the Iranians to attack the U.S., Obama’s nuclear deal really made it possible for the U.S. to free its captured personnel who never should have been in Iranian custody in the first place.

The Obama administration gave us its word that Iran had no “hostile intent” when it captured ten Americans, forced their surrender at gunpoint, and then demanded an American apology for the whole affair.

And then Iran released these photos of the nine men and one woman who were arrested and blindfolded at sea by the Iranians.
    ...
The Iranian humiliation of Barack Obama is now complete. Operation Whatever-The-Farsi-Word-Is-For-BOHICA was a success. This was no friendly maritime assist from an American ally. It was a coordinated public relations coup from a violent regime that wished to humiliate the very president who in just days will bless the transfer of tens of billions of dollars to the terrorists in charge of Iran’s government.

The Obama administration told us it was just two friendly countries helping each other with a broken boat. The Obama administration told us there was no “hostile intent.” The Obama administration told us no apology was demanded.

None of it was true. Our military personnel were captured, forced to surrender on their knees, blindfolded, and photographed. Their images were then broadcast to the world on Wednesday morning by the Iranian regime, a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions. The American woman who was captured was forced to submit to Islamic law and don a hijab. State-run Iranian media announced that the whole affair was meant to be a “lesson” to “troublemakers” in the U.S. Congress.

And the presidential administration of Barack Obama went right along with the whole charade.

    Jig, Field, jig!

The economy is still a mess. Iraq is a mess. The home lending disaster is poised to start up again under another name. Global warming is being debunked daily by scientists. Isis is growing like a cancer. But, Republicans opposing bad, really bad, policies implemented by the current administration is racist? Good Lord.

DUBAI (Reuters) - "Iran's army chief said on Wednesday the seizure of two U.S. navy boats and their 10 sailors should be a lesson to members the U.S. Congress trying to impose new sanctions on Tehran."

Does this minor little action of taking our sailors hostage and the subsequent threat to our elected representatives sound like the sweet fruits of this administration’s great rapport with the Ayatollah? I sure doesn't to me.

"It is becoming clear that not only do many scientists dispute the asserted global warming crisis, but these skeptical scientists may indeed form a scientific consensus.

Don’t look now, but maybe a scientific consensus exists concerning global warming after all. Only 36 percent of geoscientists and engineers believe that humans are creating a global warming crisis, according to a survey reported in the peer-reviewed Organization Studies. By contrast, a strong majority of the 1,077 respondents believe that nature is the primary cause of recent global warming and/or that future global warming will not be a very serious problem."

The New Low-Down Payment Mortgage courtesy of the Democrats, again.

"Excellent news for U.S. home buyers --the government has backed a new low-downpayment mortgage program which is now available in all 50 states.

The program requires just 3% down and is officially known as HomeReady™.

HomeReady™ targets home buyers with average income or below, although the program can be used by just about anyone, depending on where you live. It's an advanced, buyer-friendly version of Fannie Mae's MyCommunityMortgage (MCM) program, which was retired in late-2015."

Holy shit teh stoooopid is very very strong here. This homeschooler links us to a three year old article that uses the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists in Alberta (a petroleum front group) as the majority of "scientists". This is exactly why conservatives aren't taken seriously. And they believe this shit.

"Don’t look now, but maybe a scientific consensus exists concerning global warming after all. This is what happens when you're stoopid. You believe shit like this that was debunked 3 years ago. Holy fuck.

"To answer this question, we consider how climate change is constructed by professional engineers and geoscientists in the province of Alberta, Canada. We begin by describing our research context and the strategic importance of Canadian oil worldwide, to the economy of Canada, and the province of Alberta. We outline the influential role of engineers and geoscientists within this industry, which allows them to affect national and international policy. Then, we describe our research design and methods."

    http://oss.sagepub.com/content/33/11/1477.full

An idiot posted a Forbes article written by a Heartland Institute employee that stated that a majority of "scientists" are skeptical of global warming. As is typical of simpleminded conservatives they grab an article written by a non-scientists with an inherent bias who does not disclose that the "scientists" polled were all from Alberta, Canada and all had interests in the oil industry as shown by the quote from the actual survey. Why was this information not disclosed in the Forbes article? Well, more than likely the author Mr. Taylor who has no training in atmospheric science found an article he thought supported his views and published it and simpleminded dunces would never read the actual survey just cut and paste. It's soooooo easy to dupe conservatives. They are stoooopid.

Asshole like him just talk about how white men built shit while not being responsible for creating anything...."

I've told you before, I have US patents in my name.  What have YOU patented in your name?

We all know that you blackimals take credit for anything done by anyone with the least bit of African ancestry, while denying credit to White people regardless.  That's part of your hypocrisy.  YOU insist that you needn't contribute anything as an individual, while denying contributions of others because they aren't Black.

"we're here and here to stay"

Right up until you piss off Whitey enough that the po-po looks aside when the good ol' boys pop you with their deer rifles at distances you can barely see.  Then suddenly you're... gone.

"Just because your ancestors came from the same continent as Thomas Edison doesn't make your dumb ass an inventor."

My granted US patents make me an inventor.  If you want to have this acknowledged by an officer of the court, I have given you my terms for proving it to you.  Either put up or shut up.

"did it ever cross your mind that yeah, white folks were almost exclusively innovative during the early years of this country because......drumroll.....IT WAS ILLEGAL for blacks to be educated."

Not post-Civil War it wasn't.  So who started electric power distribution?  A White guy.  Who invented 3-phase alternating current and made long-distance power distribution practical?  A white guy (a Croat, to be specific).  Radio?  A White guy.  The internal combustion engine?  White guys.  The transistor?  A White guy who didn't buy the "paint-job theory" nonsense that Africans are no different under the skin.

What's the (pre-Zero) poster-boy for post-Civil War Black achievement famous for?  Some recipes for peanuts and sweet potatoes, and something about crop rotation that had been practiced since the Roman empire.  Something that's been done for nearly two thousand years... but when a Black guy latches onto it, it's an example of Black achievement and must be trumpeted to the skies!

And you wonder why I find you ridiculous, and hilarious.

From the "believing your own propaganda" department:

"The first man to develop a reliable and safe method of storing blood for transfusions was BLACK. Dr. Charles Drew."

What he did is disputed.  He didn't discover the ABO type classification (that was Landsteiner and Jansky, an Austrian and a Czech), he didn't discover blood preservation (first successfully preserved blood was used in 1914, by a Belgian), first blood bank was established in 1917 in WWI France by one Oswald Robertson (Drew was 13)... basically, Drew's role amounted to being a good manager, but blood banks existed before him and would be standard without him.

On top of that, Drew had straight hair, a high forehead and a reasonably narrow nose.  Odds are that he passed the paper-bag test with flying colors; in other words, he's what you'd derogatorily call a "high yella", maybe 1/8 Black at most.  Tell ya what, I claim all his accomplishments for his 7/8 of White blood.  And Daniel Hale Williams was assisted by a White surgeon, one Henry Dalton, who had accomplished a similar pericardium repair 2 years earlier.

"Think about that before you open your ignorant mouth again."

I love throwing your ignorant posturing words back at you.

"Actually dickhead, Dr Mark Dean, A BROTHER, holds 3 patents on the Personal Computer (PC)."

This was interesting and it's a weekend, so I looked him up on the USPTO database (search term IN/"dean;" AND AN/"International Business Machines" AND IN/"Mark" for those who want to do it themselves).  Turns out the only likely patent where he's the sole inventor is 4,575,826, "Refresh generator system for a dynamic memory".  Hobbyists were building their own refresh generators years before IBM issued the IBM PC, because static RAM cost so much more than dynamic RAM.  The Apple II used its video generation circuitry to also do RAM refresh, way back in 1977.

This is a classic example of Black egotism:  some Black guy does something that was invented and been done many times before by Whites, but it becomes a Victory for Blackness and gives Blacks ownership even though everything unique about it may have been dumped on the trash-heap of history like Garrett Morgan's traffic signal.

Basically, Blacks can only succeed in inventing, or medicine, or anything else, where they have White people and White culture to enable them.

"Why does disagreement with or criticism of Obama's policies have to be tied to race by some people?"

Because EVERYTHING is about race to some (meaning, Black) people.  If they ever had to give up "RAYCISS!" they would be out of things to say.  Even now it's so much fun to push them on it and watch them squirm.
