ReplyDeleteHousing federal criminals in private prisons is clearly bad. However, it remains to be seen if Trump plans on increasing the use of those prisons beyond the share of prisoners they had held before Obama shut them down. Previously, private prisons were never used all that extensively in the federal criminal justice system. I guess we'll soon find out.
On the other hand, Homeland Security has made huge use of private prisons in securing immigration detainees. The vast majority of such detainees are currently held in private facilities prior to deportation. And now, given Trump's apparent goal of expanding ICE and deporting every damn foreigner on American soil, many more private detention centers will inevitably be built.
When Trump got elected, it's safe to assume the people at Corrections Corporation of America and Geo Group had a giant collective orgasm. Ka-ching!

Uh, no. Trump's orders on deportations are not some super-ingenious 24-dimensional chess he is playing. Almost everyone expected he'd do exactly what he's doing with regards to illegal immigration -- except for a subset of wishful-thinking pundits who convinced themselves that "Trump will be more reasonable once he's president."
And these orders won't primarily face roadblocks in court, since, unlike his idiotic Muslim ban, these are at least not a willful violation of anti-discrimination clauses of the Constitution.
Instead, what you will see is networks of lefties working to undermine ICE and thwart and obstruct them from carrying out deportations.
