That quote above is from my friend, Danny Alvarez, who made a good run to become Philadelphia's District Attorney but lost to a more popular democrat. Philadelphia is regretting that now, because the man who beat him, Seth Williams, was recently charged with various crimes by Uncle Sam, and might be facing some serious jail time. But I digress.
I was thinking about that quote as I watched trumpcare flame out today. I must admit that I even drank the trump bullshit Kool-Aid. I really thought that Mr. Art of the deal would get it done. But alas, he was just blowing smoke like he always does.
There has not been a whole lot of "winning" for trump these days. All those promises on the campaign trail are not panning out. There is no wall, no Muslim ban, and certainly no Obamacare repeal and replace. Now, in typical trump fashion, he is backing away and blaming others for his failures. His concession speech today was pathetic, and it made him come off as weak and delusional.
He kept saying that the vote was close when they missed the mark by fifteen votes; he kept saying that Obamacare will implode and go away when there is no sign of that happening, and he whined that Obamacare would not go away in just 64 days, but he boasted on the campaign trial that he would do away with it immediately.
And even with all of that, Paul Ryan was taking notes,
"We came really close today but we came up short. ... This is a disappointing day for us." He said the president has "really been fantastic."
"Fantastic"?
Well trump can take solace in one thing: He clearly has a lot of bullshit left to give.

None of this is surprising. Again, let's review.
ReplyDeleteThere have only ever been 3 options on the table for handling healthcare:
1) A regulation/mandates/subsidies plan. We could call it, I dunno, "Obamacare"?
2) Single payer -- i.e., everybody goes on Medicare, private health insurance abolished.
3) Free-market healthcare, which means you tell poor people to go die of disease because they can't get health insurance. (Psst! A lot of those poor people are white and if you screw them, Paul Ryan and Donnie Combover, they may never vote Republican again!)
Now, I know what Republicans would really like an option 4: pass CaucasianCare! Healthcare for white people only, but not for those "undeserving," lazy brown people. That would fit satisfy the nastiest instincts of their horrible voter base, but would also, unfortunately, be totally unconstitutional.
So they're stumped. They don't like any of the three realistic options I've listed above, so they haven't bothered to come up with any real fucking plans of their own. Instead, they spent the last six years of Obama's president bitching and moaning about what a bastard he is and how he was ruining the universe. And lying about how his healthcare plan is in a death spiral (it isn't), and that it would raise medical costs (it reduced them), and would destroy jobs (it didn't). Thus, it's too late now, after all the drama and rending of garments over Obamacare, to leave it alone and admit to the public that Obama was right all along.
And now that they are in charge ... well, it's "the dog ate my homework" time. They have to suddenly cobble a replacement together on the fly, and they have no clue, and they just want the whole thing to please, please, God, go away.
The result is utter chaos.
Privately, here's what all of the Republicans in Congress are thinking: Can't Obama come back, so we can spend all our time demonizing and insulting him? That's what we're best at. In fact, that's the only thing we're good at. Work is soooooo hard.

ReplyDeleteWell, see, this is basically the same thing as Social Security. Governmental programs need adjustments as they go along. The formula for Social Security was created decades ago, and people are living longer due to improved capabilities in healthcare than they were at the program's inception, and so now the formula no longer works. Contributions and benefit payments need to be adjusted so it is once again sustainable.
But Republicans don't WANT it to be sustainable, because it is "of the government" and they therefore hate it, so they will block any adjustments and try and cause it to fail, and then turn around and say, "See, it failed! Ponzi scheme!" Or some such garbage.
Same thing with Obamacare. Really, there are a few minor tweaks necessary based on what we are now finding out through the program's initial growing pains. The penalties for people not signing up need to be bigger, and the subsidies for those who have signed up also need to be a bit bigger. Not really a big deal. But at minimum, Republicans will likewise try and block this, and try and make things not work, and then say, "See, it didn't work."
And I say "at minimum," because refusing to make necessary adjustments and tweaks is the least they will do. They can do worse, by actively modifying the current funding formula in ways that will truly sabotage it and make costs explode and health insurers want to run away from offering policies. That's what "Trumpcare" seems to be: Obamacare, but crappier and not sustainable.
And this is all reflective of how Republicans operate in general: Make people hate the government, based on the incompetent way the government runs whenever Republicans are in control of it.

Seems the bill failed because there was still a provision that gave essential care, a minimum amount of coverage. Obamacare got rid of "junk" plans that took peoples' money but had minimal coverage. I can't expalin it to you, because you don't understand math or its application to economics. Suffice it to say the costs of the program will continue to spiral higher, because the young poor, healthy people that Obamacare shifts the costs onto will continue to opt out, meaning coverage goes only to the older, not so healthy people who make lots of claims.
Since the penalty for not buying coverage is minmal compared to the cost of coverage, and since "pre-existing conditions" can't prevent you from getting insurance, it makes economic sense for young people to wait until they need to make a claim to buy insurance.
This is not insurance against loss. This does not shift risk to the insurance company, just costs.
It is a poorly designed program that was never meant to succeed. It was always meant to fail some day, and that day is now. It doesn't matter if the Republicans repeal it or not, it is done.
Obamacare you say? I see you jigging up there in Philadelphia.

I think the idea of universal coverage makes a lot of sense. Other than Blue Cross which deliberately raised their rates and even priced out major state universities in retaliation to Obamacare, I have seen relatively stable insurance premiums. I first became insured in 1984 when I was only twenty-five. So it's not a bad idea for young people to get insured. It is fallacy to just say, "I am healthy, so I choose not to have insurance." Maybe you won't need it. I had my first hernia in my twenties. I had an Achilles heel tendon smashed when I was twenty-six. I suffered another hernia in my early thirties. I like to get things like flu shots. People get ear infections. Shit happens. Girls definitely need to see a doctor.
Universal car insurance works out quite well.

Obamacare isn't failing. It is, however, operating suboptimally and needs an adjustment -- namely, younger and healthier people need to be punished more when they refuse coverage and subsidized more when they accept it, in order to guarantee costs are spread across the population and don't end up too heavily on older and sicker people.
Republicans, naturally, will refuse these necessary adjustments and then act like there's just an unavoidable problem with the program.
This is the maddening thing about everything Republicans do. They get away with murder only because a large percentage of Americans are morons and can't figure out that Republicans are lying.

1. Owning a car is choice. Mandatory health insurance means you have to buy something just for existing.
2. Car insurance for collision and theft is optional. What is mandatory is liability insurance for the damage you do to the propert of others with your car. The analogy for health insurance would be mandatory coverage for the healthcare costs of other people you injure through your own negligence.
3. Everyone needs to make their own decision how much risk they wish to retain for themselves, and how much they wish to transfer to an insurance company based on how much the insurance company charges them for assuming this risk. A young person making 25,000 per year may decide to retain the risk of paying for hernia surgery himself, rather than paying $500 per month. Prior to Obamacare, insurance companies could offer coverafge to young, healthy people at lower rates because they are lower risks. Obamacare makes young people pay much more, to subsidize coverage for the poor, and lowers cost for older, less healthy people. It makes health insurance untenable.
