Tearing down a legacy.

TWEET ME Jerry Falwell, Jr. says that Donald trump has the chance to be the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln. I am not sure how he plans to achieve that feat, but apparently he thinks that the best way to do it is to tear down everything that Barack Obama built up.

"Washington (AFP) - Brick by brick, the demolition job has begun: since taking office less than a year ago, Donald Trump has launched an all-out assault on the legacy of Barack Obama.
Climate, free trade, health care, immigration, foreign policy -- the 45th US president has set about undoing just about everything done by the 44th.
All new presidents, of course, break with their predecessor once in the Oval Office, especially if they come from a rival political party.
But what is striking is how systematic the hammer blows to Obama's legacy have been.
And rather than throw his weight behind new policies or projects, Trump has shown a willful desire to unpick, shred and erase everything his predecessor accomplished.
It's worth noting that each time he buries one of the reforms of the man who sat before him at the "Resolute desk," Trump sounds more like a candidate than a president.
- 'Ridiculous trade deals' -
The Trans-Pacific Partnership? Within days of taking office, Trump signed an order pulling America out of the free trade accord, the fruit of eight years of negotiations between 12 Asia-Pacific countries, from Chile to Canada and Japan.
"We're going to stop the ridiculous trade deals that have taken everybody out of our country and taken companies out of our country, and it's going to be reversed," Trump said.
Paradoxically, in signing off on the project's demise, Trump was aligning himself more with the left wing of the Democratic party than with the Republican mainstream.
The Paris climate accord? Obama played a leading role in attaining that milestone in the effort to combat global warming.
Trump pulled out of the agreement signed by 195 countries, claiming that it "punishes the United States" and declaring: "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris."
What about Obamacare, the signature legislative achievement of Obama's first term? After trying in vain to get Congress to repeal it, Trump is now working to bring about its collapse through the regulatory process.
And the Iranian nuclear accord? The bid to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon in return for a lifting of sanctions more than any other bore came to represent Obama's approach to world affairs.
"This deal will have my name on it," the Democratic president said shortly before it was concluded. "Nobody has a bigger personal stake in making sure that it delivers on its promise."
While Trump has stopped short of tearing up the Iran deal, as he threatened on the campaign trail, on Friday he warned he could do so "at any time," raising doubts about the fate of an accord born of years of painstaking diplomacy.
- A break at any price -
How to explain the fixation on destroying Obama's legacy at all cost?
Trump has held high his determination to fulfill his campaign promises, and give form to a simple slogan: "America First."
And his team recalls, with reason, that Obama acted by decree many times when thwarted by Congress. What has been decided by the stroke of a pen can be undone by the stroke of a pen.
Historian Jeffrey Engel, however, sees no equivalent in recent decades to Trump's systematic application of the simple principle that "if the other guy liked it, it must be bad."
To Engel, the explanation is that Trump's electoral base "never accepted fully Barack Obama as their president."
"There was a move among Obama's opponents to delegitimize him and to say that this man is not really president and consequently anything that he did, Trump's base is ready to get rid of," said Engel, who heads Southern Methodist University's center for presidential history in Dallas, Texas.
A notable fact: Obama has until now remained largely silent as his legacy is demolished.
American tradition, which is generally respected, holds that a former president should remain above the fray.
But, in thinking about his place in history, Obama is also playing the patience card.
"I think that Obama understands that his legacy ultimately will be defined by how America reacts to Trump in the long term and how Trump's successors act," said Engel.
On November 7, 2016, on the eve of the US elections, Obama warned voters "it all goes out the window" if they were to send Trump to the White House.chasing
That attempt to rally Democratic voters now seems prophetic." [Source]

I sure hope trump knows what he is doing. He seems to be more skilled at harassing women than he is at legislating and running government. But apparently his minions believe in him. And therefore, at least for now, that's all it seems to take.

If a white man did everything that Obama did he would go down in history as a hero.
This is seen throughout American and world history.
If a white man can't take credit for it, they either ignore it, distort history, change history or lie about it.

...It doesn't matter how many people may die or be hurt as a result.

It's interesting how some of those very same people complaining about "Obama Care" don't even realize how they will be affected adversely if it was repealed.

But as long as white men keep scaring white women into believing that "those brown folks" are going to destroy "their" country and their lifestyle...this country will become so divided that it will be very easy to be taken over by the very rich corporate conglomerations within this country as well as Russia.

    ...Tsk Tsk Tsk

Obama was only elected because he was black.

His policies did massive harm to America, because Obama hated America.

Americans saw that their good-faith gesture of electing a black man was rewarded only with hate and violence against them.

They turned to the only politician who was on their side.

Trump is step-by-step repairing the damage Obama did.

Let's all get behind our President and help Make America Great Again.

    - Precisely what "harm" did Obama's policies do "to America"?
    -
    - Provide a SPECIFIC LIST of items that can be fact-checked using multiple sources, *not* merely "breitbart" or some "white is right" blog. MULTIPLE sources.
    -
    - I bet dollars to donuts that no such list will appear. All we will see is the same old same-old unproven and unproveable hollow claims.
    -
    - When America was great, we had an 80%+ top tax rate, blue-collar and white-collar worker salaries rose in pace with CEO perquisite and salary increases, education and intellect were valued rather than demeaned, and more people were being allowed the freedom to exercise their equal Constitutional rights, and extremism was being rejected as the danger it is.
    - Everything started to go to hell in a handbasket around 1980, when the moderates and "thinkers" of the Republican party played deaf, dumb, and blind while HANDING the GOP over to the dominionists, corporatist, racists,s and other extremists, who brayed and barked about "loving the Constitution" while their actions proved the exact opposite.
    -
    - Trump is the direct result of that permitted extremism. He CANNOT "make America great" because he and his minions hate all the things that DID, and CAN, make America great.

The man has no interest in uniting America, he really sounds like president Sean Hannity as he just throws red meat as if he's still campaigning. War on Christmas? Seriously? @ PilotX - Trump has, throughout his life, had one, and only one, interest:
    himself.
    - He's 71+ years old. And ever sine he first got his mug on TV, he's shown America his self-aggrandizing vindictive narcissism. He's screwed people over again and again, and the only reason banks kept handing him money is that his debts were *SO* huge that the only hope lenders had was that he's pay *some* of it back. He's used his lawyers to hammer on people whom he disliked or got POed at, who had no real means of defense against him. He has always been volatile and just plain reprehensible.
    - What I can't understand is that the vast majority of people simply refused to look into his history, and worse, rejected any and all references offered to them which HANDED them the info.
    - We truly have become an idiotocracy, where most people merely want to beeeeeLEEEEEV, and to hell with facts.
    - But I bet dollars to donuts that most of the dopes will get their turn to cry when THEY get screwed out of something they worked for and paid for. Too many people don't give a damn about anything until THEY PERSONALLY get screwed.

minions don’t believe in him. Eight years of having a Black face in what is yours is truly painful. I emphasized with them daily. I heard daily Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh each and everyday for I years. It was painful to me as a medical professional having worked in mental for decades. These men truly may see beyond race on the skin color level. They had to daily battle with a learned concept that Blacks were inferior when it comes to be POTUS. Their thinking was may be that if that was not so, how come a Black had not been president sooner?

Think of Hannity and Rush having to endure 4 more years without a white face in the chair. I understand their pains. I went 38 years in voting painfully because I had to put that level for someone that I had no alligence to. The pain of always waiting for the day when someone of color ga to the office, I can check out knowing that it happened! Now I can listen to Rush and Hannity still bitch and moan about event that occurred many moons ago. This moaning display that their inner core psychic was insulted. Poor two crybabies.

  9. Fergus is trying his damnedest to undo everything Obama did as revenge for being made fun of at the WHCD.
Fergus doesn't give a rat's ass about those policies, programs, treaties, or agreements, or what they do, as shown by his utter lack of understanding of any of them.
Fergus was elevated to the position he is now failing at by a confluence of easy to understand circumstances, not all of which he has any control over.
The Pig-People who still support him need a Republican bastard to support to keep their world views from collapsing and forcing upon them the awful knowledge that they have been swindled by their heroes for their entire adult lives and the dirty fucking hippies have been right about them all along.
It is understandable that they want to avoid this.
Fortunately, they do not comprise anything like a majority, and can thus be relegated to more proportional representation in the government at the ballot box.
The Republicans do, however, cheat like motherfuckers, so such adjustments-by-election won't be as easy as all of that.
But it must be done, preferably before the damn fool starts a war to try and juice his poll numbers and gets a lot of people killed.
Laws and policies can be repealed and fixed by the next Democratic administration, like usual, but dead people stay dead, and there is a very real danger that he could kill a lot of them.

Most Americans have utterly rejected the hoax that is global warming, climate change, climate disruption, nom du jour so much so that the propaganda barrage is so remarkably unsubtle as the odor left by a Michael Moore projectile colitis attack in a phone booth. On the very day PBS airs an alarmist documentary that basically equates the Scott Pruitt-run EPA to the Einsatzgruppen, we learn that ocean levels around the globe are falling.

Democrats are in full freakout mode because the President is following the letter of the law of Obamacare in gutting it - the very same law they and schmucks like John "Old Overholt and a pack of Luckies" Boehner claimed was "the law of the land." Petards be foisted, yo.

Austria, known chiefly for waltzes, pastry and fascist dictators has decided that they too have had enough of the EU-imposed Muslim invasion, and in a fit of pique that would've pinned back Peter Jennings ears, went out and elected an anti-immigrant president who dislikes the EU and, get this, is a 31-year-old millennial. Hmm.

Then there's the throwing back of the phony Iran sellout to the Senate as well as the sanctioning of the IRGC, the Iranian regime's chief enforcer and source of funding, and the emergence of Steve Bannon as a political force to be reckoned with who is hell bent on taking over or destroying the GOP-e, then what it all adds up to me is that perhaps we are witnessing a pivotal moment in the struggle to take back the country.

  23. The two terms of Barack Obama seemed to be the crowning validation of the left’s victory. Despite Obama’s “no blue state, no red state” campaign rhetoric, he governed as the most leftist––and ineffectual–– president in history. Deficits exploded, taxes were raised, new entitlements created, and government expanded far beyond the dreams of center-left Democrats. Marriage and sex identities were redefined. The narrative of permanent white racism was endorsed and promoted. Tradition-minded Americans were scorned as “bitter clingers to guns and religion.” Hollywood and Silicon Valley became even more powerful cultural arbiters and left-wing publicists. And cosmopolitan internationalism was privileged over patriotic nationalism, while American exceptionalism was reduced to an irrational parochial prejudice.

But the election of Donald Trump, and the overreach of the left’s response to that victory, suggest that we may be seeing the beginning of the end of the left’s cultural, social, and political dominance.

    3:18 PM

    - Yes re: the Moderate Left, because the far Left is as EXTREMIST as is the far Right, and *all* extremism is, by definition, tyrannical, because it rejects human nature. I could go into far greater depth on that, but I think the reasons are plainly obvious so I won't insult people by writing a whole thesis ;).
    -
    - Regarding supposed "inherent contradictions" of Liberalism, however, at least Classical Liberalism, it is no more "inherently contradictory" than are any and all human social systems and theories regarding them.
    - The reason is that humans as a species are contadictory. Human nature, meaning the sum total of human psychology and behavior, encompasses everything from Jeffrey Dahmer to Mother Theresa, and any other examples of extreme opposites one can think of.
    - As with intelligence, however, there is a huge middle ground which encompasses the vast majority of humans. Political extremism, regardless of type, rejects and belittles that vast middle ground.
    -
    - The reality is that the left-leaning moderates, the centrists, and the right-leaning moderates have much more in common with one another, than any has in common with the extremists of either wing.
    - If anything, Classic Liberalism is what gave us the concept of "equal civil and legal rights for all citizens".
    - It is EXTREMISM which rejects that.
    - Classic Liberalism is part of the very *human* search for balance, seeking to allow the most liberty possible for the most people possible, while still seeking justice for those whose rights and liberties have been infringed-upon. And that, in turn, has to be balanced with the means necessary to protect that society and nation from those who would seek to destroy it because it *is not* extremist.
    - It isn't the platform that's contradictory; the "inherent contradiction", and the resulting "messiness" of the system, is in the Humans Species itself, given that one person's paradise would be a different person's hell, so balance is difficult, if even possible!, to find.

We covered those in some detail back in 2012 when GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich accused Obama of being the “food stamp president.” The number of food stamp beneficiaries increased by 14.7 million during Bush’s two terms in office, which exceeds the current increase under Obama of 14.1 million.

    - That's about the size of it. Especially irksome is the deal where someone writes a whole list of mostly-false accusations, and then, when one corrects that false ones, the accuser starts howling and braying that one "worships" him, or more typically, launches into crude sexual accusations regarding the fact-checker and supposed activities with malanin-enriched people. ((I'm not even going to use the asterisk-filled substitutes for their potty-mouth lingo)).
    -
    - No wonder so many of them resort to blaming pretty much *everyone* but themselves for their lack of job advancement or rejection by college admissions offices or not having a girlfriend or the store being out of Fig Newtons or when they try to use a chainsaw while drunk and cut off a toe - itz thuh JOOZ!!!, itz thuh KNEEGROWZ!!!, and so on and so forth and et centera, ad infinitum and ad nauseum.
    -
    - What they never 'get' is that Trump and McConnel and their ilk are not hated because they are Conservatives - they are hated bcause they CLAIM to be Conservatives, while, in reality, they, like their masochistic minions, are anythingbut Conservatives.

    - You answer well, though. I admit to being out of patience.
    -
    - Somewhat tangentially, I had read some time ago that, because of the teafarty making it more difficult for Agricultural Workers to come here on a seasonal basis to harvest vegetables and fruit, some of the largest produce companies have actually moved their operations to Mexico. The workers make the same wages, but don't have to travel, so it works for them as well.
    - I don't know about other areas in the US, but here in the Houston area, more and more of the produce comes from Mexico.
    -
    - I guess it's a sort of circuitous turn-about:
US corporations have been sucking money out of Puerto Rico like crazy since they got their pets in Congress to change the tax laws, so no Big Ag is taking money direct to Mexico. Maybe some of it will get back to PR...

Really? What about hurricane Matthew that made landfall in Florida on the seventh of October of 2016 killing 47 people in the US?

Or don't you remember that one because it happened the same day as the "grab them by the pussy" tape was released and you spent the whole day furiously masturbating?

It would be nice if your lies and insanity took more than five seconds to debunk, or how about not lying at all?

    No? Didn't think so.

Without lies you run the risk of being infected with reality, and that leads to having to admit to yourself that you've been swindled by your heroes for your entire adult life and that the dirty fucking hippies have been right about you all along.

Which you WILL face one day. Whether it happens of your own volition and you have a better life because of it, or comes as a nasty knock to what's left of your worldview is up to you.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you consume propaganda. You can stop.

  58. Matthew was a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in the US.

Sustained hurricane-force/category 1 winds were confined mainly to the immediate coastal areas and barrier islands of east-central and northeastern Florida, and the barrier islands of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, including the Outer Banks

    www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL142016_Matthew.pdf

A major hurricane is Category 3 or higher.

Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the US in almost 12 years:

    - Oh Doug, Doug, Doug, don't you realize that *it doesn't matter* how many people die, how much land is razed, how many $billions of damage are done to property public and private? Don't you realize that an increasing frequency and severity of floods in meaningless podunk areas like Houston are irrelevant?
    - ALL THAT MATTERS is you said "Major hurricanes", BUT the hurricanes and tropical storms that have hit North America are technically not major since the winds weren't Cat 3, ergo, the climate change deniers get to call you a moron.
    - Death and destruction? HEY, all irrelevant - the ONE thing that matters in the RW scoring system is that one denier got to call one supposed liberal a "moron" for using one term erroneously...

  63. "Hurricane Matthew was a powerful and devastating tropical cyclone which became the first Category 5 Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Felix in 2007. The thirteenth named storm, fifth hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, Matthew brought widespread destruction and catastrophic loss of life during its journey across the Western Atlantic, including parts of Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the Lucayan Archipelago, the southeastern United States, and the Canadian Maritimes. A total of 603 deaths have been attributed to the storm, including 546 in Haiti, 47 in the United States, 4 in Cuba, 4 in the Dominican Republic, 1 in Colombia, and 1 in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, making it the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Stan in 2005, which killed 1,668 in Central America. With the storm causing damages estimated in excess of US $15 billion, it was also the most destructive Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, as well as the ninth-costliest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history."

That was probably published before this hurricane season, so the historical rankings may be wrong by now.

  64. Here is part of an excellent op-ed by Charles M. Blow in the New York Times on this subject:

It must be cold and miserable standing in the shadow of someone greater and smarter, more loved and more admired. It must be infuriating to have risen on the wings of your derision of that person’s every decision, and even his very existence, and yet not be able to measure up — in either stratagem or efficacy — when you sit where that person once sat.
This is the existence of Donald Trump in the wake of President Barack Obama. Trump can’t hold a candle to Obama, so he’s taking a tiki torch to Obama’s legacy. Trump can’t get his bad ideas through Congress, but he can use the power of the presidency to sabotage or even sink Obama’s signature deeds.
In fact, if there is a defining feature of Trump as “president,” it is that he is in all ways the anti-Obama — not only on policy but also on matters of propriety and polish. While Obama was erudite, Trump is ignorant. Obama was civil, Trump is churlish. Obama was tactful, Trump is tacky.
There is a thing present in Obama and absent from Trump that no amount of money or power can alter: a sense of elegant intellectualism and taste.
The example Obama set makes the big man with the big mouth look smaller by the day. But I believe that this nonadjustable imbalance is part of what has always fueled Trump’s rage against Obama. Trump, who sees character as just another malleable thing that can be marketed and made salable, chafes at the black man who operated above the coarseness of commercial interests and whose character appeared unassailable.
America — even many of the people who were staunch opponents of Obama’s policies — admired and even adored the sense of honor and decency he brought to the office. Trump, on the other hand, is historically unpopular, and not just in America. As The Pew Research Center pointed out in June: “Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the U.S. have declined steeply in many nations.” Trump is reviled around the globe and America’s reputation is going down with its captain.
All of this feeds Trump’s consuming obsession with undoing everything Obama did. It is his personal crusade, but he also carries the flag for the millions of Americans — mostly all Republicans — who were reflexively repulsed by Obama and the coalition that elected him. . . .
Trump isn’t governing with a vision, he’s governing out of spite. Obama’s effectiveness highlights Trump’s ineptitude, and this incenses Trump.
