A guilty plea and a tax scheme.

Republicans in Washington are hours away from giving a trillion dollars away to the wealthiest among us. It will be done by way of a tax scheme that will be pushed through many of the people voting for it even seeing what they are voting for. The are so anxious to get it through before we can scrutinize it that they are literally handwriting parts of it. (See above) Incredibly, some democratic senators have been saying that they are hearing what's in the bill from lobbyist on K Street, not from their republican colleagues.

It must be nice to be a republican fat-cat donor these days. All of the politricksters in Washington depend on you to get their money to get reelected, and they will honor your will, even if it means hurting most of the people in the country in the long run.

Personally,  from what I can see, this new proposed tax scheme will not affect my life that much. In fact, my accountant says that I will be happy with it. The thing is, though, unlike those scumbags in Washington, I actually care about my fellow citizens, and I realize that there might be some short-term gain from this scheme, but in the long run we will all suffer. We have lived through this "trickle down economics" scam before, and it was not pretty.

So all in all this was a good day if you are a fat cat lobbyist or wealthy American.

It wasn't a good day, however, for the former national security adviser to Donald  trump.

"it has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months of false accusations of 'treason' and other outrageous acts."

However, he said, "I recognize that the actions I acknowledged in court today were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right. My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country. I accept full responsibility for my actions."

That was Michael Flynn's statement after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI. He will be singing like  Beyonce in days to come, because believe me, it was a very nice deal, and Mr. Mueller and company will want something in return.

Sadly for Mr. trump, that something is him ---or someone close to him, and if you have been following the time line of this Russia mess, you know that he (Mueller) could be nabbing a bigger fish any day now. Mr. trump might end up getting his wall after all. It just won't be the one he expected. It won't be keeping Mexicans out of America, it will be keeping him in prison.

It seems like just yesterday Mike Flynn was yelling "lock her up" when referring to Hillary Clinton to a crown of rabid trump deplorables.

Oh well, sorry Mr. Flynn, life comes at you fast.

The Republican Party itself is a scam.

It exists to serve rich people's interests at everyone else's expense. And it does so by convincing the undereducated redneck rubes of Middle America to vote to harm themselves, by terrifying them with fairy tales about dangerous brown people and then offering to protect them from those same dangerous brown people.

This has merely become more obvious and destructive during the era of Trump, but it's been building for, like, four decades in the Republican Party.

At this point, the GOP isn't even attempting to appear like anything but the faithful servant of aristocrats, between this grotesque tax bill, the elimination of commonsense environmental regulations, and the repeal of net neutrality.

Almost nobody who isn't rich benefits from any of this junk.

Obama ran deficits every year of his administration bigger than what this tax cut supposed to fall short over ten years.

If it stimulates growth by only 1/2%, it will more than pay for itself.

Let the Republicans show you how to grow an economy. Obama sure couldn't.

As Barry used to say, elections have consequences.

If you were a real lawyer, Mr. Negro, you would see what happened today means the Russia collusion fantasy is over. When a prosecutor has a cooperator who was an accomplice in a major criminal scheme, the cooperator is made to plead guilty to the scheme. This is critical because it proves the existence of the scheme.
In his guilty-plea allocution (the part of a plea proceeding in which the defendant admits what he did that makes him guilty), the accomplice explains the scheme and the actions taken by himself and his co-conspirators to carry it out. This goes a long way toward proving the case against all of the subjects of the investigation.

That is not happening in Flynn’s situation. Instead, like with George Papadopoulos, he is being permitted to plead guilty to a mere process crime. A breaking report from ABC News indicated that Flynn is prepared to testify that Trump directed him to make contact with the Russians — initially to lay the groundwork for mutual efforts against ISIS in Syria. That, however, is exactly the sort of thing the incoming national-security adviser is supposed to do in a transition phase between administrations. If it were part of the basis for a “collusion” case arising out of Russia’s election meddling, then Flynn would not be pleading guilty to a process crime — he’d be pleading guilty to an espionage conspiracy.

    No, not the Wu-Tang album!

There was some amusing news today about Martin Shkreli, strong contender for most punchable man in America (his competitors include Richard Spencer and, of course, the evil man-baby who currently occupies the Oval Office): The Feds are getting ready to snatch his assets for securities crimes he committed.

This includes the Wu-Tang album that Shkreli bought the rights to, and then refused to release because he's just an all-around prick.

  9. Even with their special "dynamic scoring" the tax bill still blows a trillion dollar hole in the budget, and that's not a bug to them, it's a feature. It's actually more important to them than giving their donors a tax cut, because it is the next step in their real agenda, which is destroying the new deal and what's left of the great society, which they will now have an excuse to do.

It's a good thing we are winning elections again, because we're gonna have a lot of work to do cleaning up the goddamn mess they are making.

"Barry" ran deficits during a giant recession. Recessions automatically cause deficits as a result of increased welfare-type spending and decreased tax revenue. In addition, he spent money on infrastructure to boost the economy and blunt the recession.

Republicans aren't doing anything of the sort. There is no recession, and the tax cuts that will increase the deficit are going to filthy rich people who will not spend most of that extra money in any way that enhances the economy. There will be no additional growth. The only economists who support this nonsense, voodoo trickle-down theory in 2017 are a tiny handful of right-wing dick-lickers like Robert Barro.

And cheating in elections also has consequences, as Trump is about to find out. Those consequences may include jail.

  14. Speaking of hurting those who voted for him, (and many of the rest of us,) the tax bill looms large on the immediate horizon. When the deficit inevitably explodes it will trigger automatic budget cuts. One of these cuts will surely be to Medicare. Seniors will feel the pain as Medicare premiums go up, benefits go down and most likely supplemental insurance premiums will increase significantly. This could easily crowd out budgets for food, clothing and housing.

According to the NYT the 2010 law protects Medicare to a certain extent. Medicare cannot be cut by more than 4%. I find that significant, particularly if it happens over several years.

    What complete idiocy.

Explain how people who already don't pay taxes are going to be devastated by a tax cut that should INCREASE revenues if it works as advertised?

If it doesn't work, taxes can be raised again in a couple of years. There are no cuts to social services or educational grants planned with this, so in the mean time no one will be hurt, much less devastated.

And the effects on the deficit are much less than the deficits Obama ran every single year of his presidency.

This is a good bill. Not good enough, but better than what we had.

This is how it is advertised to work- Pay attention. Billionaires will get yoooge taxcuts. They will not have to pay a cent in estate taxes (they can pass all their wealth w/o losing a penny) They will be able to bring back money from offshore and pay a pittance instead of 35% korporate taxes they owe all Americans.

Now they have all this money and wingnuts say they will just feel naturally grateful and raise wages for employees by $4000. Riiiiiiiiiiight! The wealthy do not and have not been the job creation engine since back when horsepower was calculated for individual horses.

Give people a living wage at the bottom, they will spend virtually every penny for goods and services. That in turns creates demand for more goods and services which increases employment and everyone can make money. That is how the economy works. Not pretend fairy tales wingnut fairies are spewing.

    - Trickle-down will succeed - in taking us closer to reverting to the conditions Upton Sinclair wrote about in his book "The Jungle". The pathetic part is that so many people are so blinded by their own spitefulness that they absolutely refuse to see that they'll suffer as much as, and possibly even more than, those whom they're so eager to see get bloodied.

The defense also presented evidence regarding the SIG Sauer’s propensity to accidentally fire. One of Garcia Zarate’s attorneys detailed the issues in a San Francisco Examiner article:

It’s an elite handgun intended for law enforcement and military personnel who may need to fire it with split second notice. Hence, it has a hair trigger in single-action mode. Even among well-trained users, it has a lengthy history of accidental discharges.

Most police agencies don’t make records public, but those that do reveal disturbing data. In a four-year period (2012-2015), the New York City Police Department reported 54 accidental firearm discharges, 10 involving SIG Sauers. Los Angeles County reported more than 80 accidental discharges between 2010 and 2015, five involving SIG Sauers. From 2005 to January 2011, the San Francisco Police Department reported 29 accidental discharges (a time when it issued SIG Sauers as its primary sidearm)…

Whitey wingnuts can be as mad as they want to be about the verdict, but the prosecution didn't do their homework and the defense team did.
