4) I actually hadn't heard about it until just now, but it makes a certain kind of sense in the media we have right now. They could have had even more coverage if they had been rich as well as white, or been any sort of celebrity.
5) Some of the cheerleaders seemed to think so. Just because cheerleading is a job no-one takes seriously, it's not an excuse for not paying them.
6) I don't really believe she made the video because she felt discriminated against. She most likely made it for attention, and she did get that. Maybe she will learn that there is good attention and bad attention and that she has a choice about which one she gets, depending on her behavior. If she could figure out that not everyone has the privilege of that choice, she'd have the answer to her question.
But the utter idiocy of "If a word is offensive to a particular race then it should not be presented in music" removes whatever amount of credit for trying to understand she could have had from her fluffy statement about the true meaning of freedom of speech.
Perhaps she will learn that she is indeed free to say that word, but as with anything else she does, there can be consequences. Basically, the difference between "free speech" and "free beer."
7) Turns out Dowd left right after a meeting where it was shown that he could have his own legal exposure. Cobb was trying to get Fergus to act sane, so that was never gonna work. The new guy was brought in, after initially refusing the job, to be "more aggressive" toward Mueller and his team, most likely in yet another failed attempt at getting someone like Roy Cohn. That is doomed to fail because Fergus hasn't the merest of clues about what made Cohn an effective attorney, and instead looks for attorneys who remind him of the things about Cohn that impressed him, none of which will help him as he faces down the wood chipper of justice.

ReplyDeleteDid it get big national coverage? I don’t think that’s really the case.
It may have gotten big coverage in Philly. If so, my explanation would be the usual “man bites dog” effect. Given the high levels of violence in the black community, people just expect shooting perps and victims to be black, and journalists really only perk up and pay attention when a shooting deviates from that pattern.
This unfortunately is one factor that helps the pattern to be self-perpetuating. If the attitude toward killings in the black community is that “nothing can be done,” then nothing will be done. Cops will try to wall off the violence and contain it to black neighborhoods, and then wash their hands of it.
The sense of inevitability of crime is, of course, only one factor that contributes to certain majority-black areas being unsafe.

When you calculate trajectories you have to figure out whick equations are necessary and then figure out the answers. It's pretty obvious you yourself are not a NASA scientist. Katherine Johnson went beyond being a computer to actually being responsible for calculating reentry trajectories for Apollo, Mercury and Space Shuttle missions. Do a little more research Jethro.

The really funny part is that any quadroon (Jackson) or octoroon-at-most (Johnson) who tried to do something like that today would be abused mercilessly for "acting white". On one hand, we are told that the America of the recent past was racist hell-hole, with blacks kept as slaves until 1965, prevented from voting, lynched from every other tree, and barred from employment as anything other than domestic servants.
Yet the narrative of this movie was that we owe our civilization's greatest triumph to some (part) black women mathematicians who worked at the heart of our (then) most esteemed organization. How would that even be possible if blacks in the 50's and 60's had zero opportunities for participation in American institutions?

ReplyDeleteThere were SOME or very few opportunities in the 50's and 60's. The fact that some people did well did not negate the fact that things were pretty bad. It really isn't that difficult to understand unless you think in broad terms and everything is a zero sum game. A bit of nuance and complexity are necessary to understand most issues.
I would recommend a good college level course in American history or Black history or maybe both. America has all kinds of complex history.

They are in good position to compete but yet some people out of jealousy or whatever decided to try to ruin their chances of winning. So is there opportunity for them? Absolutely. Is there still latent racism hell bent on trying to prevent any achievement they deem unworthy? Obviously. Two complete and contradictory ideas and realities can exist simultaneously. So even with some pushback success and progress can be made.
