When diversity and "wokeness" goes wrong.

The link below is a very thought provoking article from Salon. I don't agree with all of it, because I happen to believe that  being "woke" is a good thing. And if we put the right people in place, so is diversity.

This following paragraph from the article is an example of the author's mindset:

"Diversity is important. But diversity, when devoid of a political agenda that fights the oppressor on behalf of the oppressed is window dressing. It is about incorporating a tiny segment of those marginalized by society into unjust structures to perpetuate them."

Nice lines. But wouldn't it better if we just made sure that the segment of  the marginalized people we put in those spaces were "woke" enough to understand their assignment? If those officers in Memphis were "woke" they would have never beaten poor Tyre Nichols to death.

Sadly, woke has become a four letter word that the right has brilliantly manipulated to be a bad thing. It triggers their base in unspeakable ways. Which I guess is kind of the point.

Their latest hope for a presidential throne, the fascist in chief from Florida, is banking on it, and he is hoping to ride that wave all the way to the White House.

Anyway, read the article and give me your thoughts.

  2. I think the author, Chris Hedges, raises some interesting points. But the author also clearly has an axe to grind, and it shows in the Salon piece.

"The engines of white supremacy, which constructed the forms of institutional and economic racism that keep the poor poor, are obscured behind attractive political personalities such as Barack Obama, whom Cornel West called "a Black mascot for Wall Street." These faces of diversity are vetted and selected by the ruling class. Obama was groomed and promoted by the Chicago political machine, one of the dirtiest and most corrupt in the country."
"Identity politics and diversity allow liberals to wallow in a cloying moral superiority, disguising their passivity in the face of corporate abuse, neoliberalism, permanent war and the curtailment of civil liberties."

The axe here is that liberals and their diversity representatives are bad, and if liberals didn't do that but instead were vocal leftists everything would be better.

Diversity targets aren't a fix-all, and I don't think anyone (acting in good faith) promoted them as such. The questions I would ask Chris Hedges if he published at a place with the temerity to allow comments are...
    1) have the people you dismiss as "representationalists" been able to make measurable progress and accomplishments for their communities?
    2) if these "representationalists" were not in their positions, would the terrible things that you (the author, Chris Hedges) still have occurred or been worse?
    3) If the liberals/Democratic party he likes to slag on so much adopted his chosen political views, would it have been able to win elections in a manner enabling it to control policy?

This article isn't terrible, it addresses things that need to be talked about more. Yet I get the feeling that if we had done the *checks article again* nothing he proposes as an alternative, the things he rails against would be worse and the people he complains about would have been white conservatives even more bent on economic exploitation of the poor and marginalized.

  3. I don't know what planet Chris Hedges lives on, but on this planet, if you want to improve things, you have to work at it. Sometimes the work is messy, and never, ever do you get everything you want.
Some of his criticism is valid, but his main rant is wrongheaded. Almost every one of his examples of misplaced diversity has measurably improved the structures in which they work, which by the way are riddled with far-right actors trying to do actual harm to the communities he claims to want to protect.
Also, his repeated use of shibboleth buzzwords undermines his criticism. Calling it "permanent war" doesn't make the underlying security needs that modern militaries are stood up to address any less politically potent.
He does make good points, though. As a life-long lefty, I have to say that his writing reminds me quite a bit of the comment section at Crooks and Liars, where for years I was branded a "corporate dem Hillbot" for the high crime of believing that the Democratic party stood a far better chance of advancing its agenda if it won some elections...
I still stand by what Barack Obama said: "I'll take better every time."

  13. We kind of have an embarrassment of riches in our senate race. Pelosi has endorsed Adam Schiff, and there's no doubt that he'd be a great senator, plus his billboard ad saying "Make Adam Schiff Kevin McCarthy's senator" is pure brilliance, but he's not the only one running. Katie Porter is running and so is Barbara Lee.
Now, just on a "who would be the best senator" basis, that would be a very hard call, but there are also politics to consider: I think Adam and Barbara could win their seats back if they were to fail, but I'm not at all confident that Katie could, and based off that aspect of the race, she's likely to get my vote, even though voting against Barbara Lee feels like a betrayal.
Would I be thrilled to have any one of them as my senator? Yes, I would.

  14. Speaking of embracing diversity, there is this to celebrate....

For Democrats, part of the goal was to create a more diverse federal judiciary, and there’s no doubt that they’re succeeding: Of the 100 confirmed jurists, 76 are women, and 68 are people of color.

What’s more, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was eager to emphasize yesterday, the Democratic-led Senate has also confirmed more public defenders to appeals courts than any in history.

    Fuck racist, wasicu scumbag magats.

My politics aren't as far left as the author of that article, Chris Hedges. On economic issues, he is a for-real socialist, and all available evidence suggests socialism doesn't work. (As in: It is an extremely unproductive economic system that condemns everyone to a lower standard of living in the name of equality.) He is also an ardent anti-war pacifist, which to me is synonymous with "naive dope," given that there are other bad governments in the world, ones worse than that of the United States, which insist on war, and leave us no option but to give it to them. These are the kind of fools now whining "Why are we being so mean to poor Vladimir Putin? Whyyyyyyy?"

However, with all of that said, Hedges is probably right that the emphasis on putting historically dis-empowered groups into high office does end up acting as a distraction from what I bluntly think are the more serious problems facing the nation and the world. Not that discrimination and bigotry doesn't matter; it's just less of a serious policy problem than the top three: global warming, our hyper-capitalist economic system, and our over-punitive justice system. What Hedges is saying is that there a lot of voters who see "someone like me" has gotten a top job in business or law or government, and feel like "everything is fixed," when in fact nothing is fixed for most people. So diversity hiring for top jobs has the effect of mollifying people, cooling their anger, and keeping them from demanding real policy change that would improve their lives.

Field asked, "But wouldn't it better if we just made sure that the segment of the marginalized people we put in those spaces were 'woke' enough to understand their assignment?" Hedges' implied point would be: These people do understand their assignment. They have often been hired to thwart the kind of changes he would like, as a condition of their employment.

This is most obvious when looking at what Republicans do. They recruit people like Candace Owens, Diamond and Silk, or Herschel Walker, with the express mission of shitting on other black people. But this phenomenon exists among Democrats, too. There are certainly centrist Democrats who go out of their way to recruit pocs, women, and sexual minorities, with the goal of defending the economic status quo. It's something to watch out for.

All of which is to say: What a person will do with power should always be more important than who they are.

Voters should focus on this in the polling booth.

Leftists are perpetually unhinged about everything, but especially gun rights. The dirty little secret they refuse to admit is that most mass shooters (outside the realm of the gangbangers that make up most of the statistics) are left-wing wackjobs. Conservatives do not engage in this sort of activity. Leftists are violent agitators and thugs; it is in their DNA.

The fundamental difference is that most of us on the right simply want to be left alone with as little government intrusion as possible, Leftists desire to control every aspect of one’s lives to the smallest detail. When someone opposes that, they react violently. It’s no wonder they react as they do; liberalism is the most soul-sucking, depressing ideology in the history of mankind. Combine that with no self-discipline, and you end up with the Keith Olbermann’s of the world.

QAnon ‘Meme Queen’ Wants Trump to Help Pedophile Son

February 24, 2023 at 12:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 170 Comments

Vice News: “For the last five years, Deborah Sullivan has been at the forefront of the QAnon movement, fighting a non-existent Democratic cabal of elites running a child sex trafficking ring. As the self-described QAnon ‘Meme Queen’ she has produced more than 4,500 memes about the conspiracy, many of them focusing on former President Donald Trump, who she believes is secretly working to save the children.”

“But earlier this month, when Sullivan’s own son was convicted of repeatedly abusing his stepdaughter in Oklahoma City, her passion for ‘saving the children’ seems to disappear. Instead, she defended her son as ‘innocent,’ blasted the justice system as ‘crooked,’ and attacked the 12-year-old girl at the center of the case as ‘a horrible liar.'”

“Now she is appealing to her community of fellow Qanon believers to come to her aide, including a direct plea to Trump himself.”

Chicago's only hope is to elect a white mayor. Black mayors always fail.

Rest easy, Mike. The only way the Democrats can lose that senate seat is if they nominate a Republican to run for it. Thankfully, California is solidly blue.

The question is really one of whether the Democrat they elect will be great or just kinda lame.

    democrat=lame

Don't worry about it, Honey. The lamest Democrat is light years better than any Republican. At least we Dems understand the meaning of the word "seized". Apparently at least one Republican in the House of Representatives does not.
