Joe Biden is old, and he looks and acts his age. There is no getting around that fact. Americans believe it, and so, I am sure, does his handlers. He jumbles his words at times, and his memory is not what it should be. Donald trump is also old. And contrary to what MAGA world believes (and his gold mirror tells him) he looks and acts his age as well. Maybe even more so than Joe Biden. But, the American media being what it is, a narrative must be spun, and that narrative is that Joe Biden is the older, less capable, and more senile of the two men.
The thing is, though, no matter how old and senile Joe Biden is, we know that his head and heart is in the right place when it comes to what's best for America. We can look back on the past three years of his administration and marvel at their accomplishments. Bringing us out of the dark chapter of our history known as the time of COVID-19, could not have been easy. And now, looks at us, we are almost back to "normal". Almost.
The other guy, on the other hand, does not have his heart in the right place. He does not care about what's best for America. He only cares about himself. He is a declared authoritarian and fascist who will govern like one, and he has vowed to get revenge on his perceived enemies. The presidency is a get out of jail free card for him, and he will do whatever it takes to get it. The scary thing is, with the help and complicity of the corporate American media machine, he is well on his way to getting his wish. The old guy who has done a masterful public relations job of not seeming to be old, might very well beat the old guy who is not quite as adept and not making public perception his reality.
Joe Biden held a press conference this past week where he angrily denounced the latest Special Counsel report which exonerated him but added some Comeyesque editorializing for cheap political points. During that press conference he made a mistake by mixing up the presidents of Mexico and Egypt. It was a never ending story in both right and left wing media for days. (CNN might be still running it as their lead story as I type this.) The other guy mumbles and bumbles his way through endless seemingly adderall induced speeches, and I don't think that they are mentioned even once in the main stream media.
Sadly, this is the new normal for the American press: They are riding the horse that makes them the most money. In this case that horse is the one with the jockey wearing the bright red MAGA silks.
Well said, Field. And I will add that Joe Biden is good at surrounding himself with highly moral, competent and capable people who understand good governance and the importance of a well-behaved United States in the World Order.
ReplyDeleteWe knew Fergus would get billions of dollars worth of friendly media, just like the last two times. If we can all just vote, like we did last time, we will beat him. Speaking of which, I got my ballots for the primary in the mail yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI will fill them out later today and mail them in on Tuesday when we go to town for groceries. I'll probably vote for Katie Porter for senate, for various reasons, but mostly because she would have the hardest time getting her old seat in congress back. Any of the three Democrats running would be an excellent senator. It will be hard to vote against Barbara Lee. She was my congresswoman for thirty five years and getting to vote for her every other year was one of the better perks of living in the East Bay.
The goddamn Republicans are running a baseball player, because why the fuck not? A first baseman would do fine in the senate, right?
I'm just waiting for Fergus to fuck up and call him Marcus.

While it’s not ideal that Biden is 81 years old, and he does sometimes mix up names when speaking publicly, pretty much all honest, reputable people that have spent any time with him attest that he’s not some doddering, demented zombie. This characterization of him is 100% a Republican smear.
ReplyDeleteIt’s shocking the double standard here, where the media fixates on every slip Biden makes, while ignoring the massive stream of absolute gibberish constantly emitted by the also-elderly Trump, who is damn near retarded at this point.
In a contest between a man who is old, and another man who is old AND EVIL, how is the former the one considered to be at a disadvantage? The only answer I can see is that there has, to date, been minimal pushback against dishonest Republican propaganda.

-> Open warfare in the Middle East

-> Communist China openly planning for the invasion of Taiwan
-> Communist China casually flying spy balloons (for days) over some of the most sensitive military installations in the United States
-> Transferring billions and billions of dollars to the Iranian mullahs who openly call for the destruction of the United States
-> Forgiveness of monies borrowed by "students" but, in reality, just transferring the cost to the taxpayers

While the study did confirm that police were more than twice as likely to use some type of physical force on those minority groups, they were 23.8 percent less likely to shoot black suspects and 8.5 percent less likely to shoot Hispanic suspects than they were to shoot at white suspects.

“The co-founders of former president Donald Trump’s media company filed a lawsuit Wednesday, claiming that Trump and other leaders had schemed to deprive them of a stake in the company that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars,” the Washington Post reports.

“That merger deal, which could value Trump’s stake in the company at more than $3 billion, would offer the former president a financial lifeline at a time when he is facing more than $454 million in penalties from a civil fraud judgment this month in New York.”

March 3, 2024 at 10:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 154 Comments
“If you ever looked at the actions of the Trump White House and wondered, ‘Are they on drugs?’ — the answer was, in some cases, yes. Absolutely, yes,” Rolling Stone reports.
“In January, the Defense Department’s inspector general released a report detailing how the White House Medical Unit during the Trump administration distributed controlled substances with scant oversight and even sloppier record keeping. Investigators repeatedly noted that the unit had ordered thousands and thousands of doses of the stimulant modafinil, which has been used by military pilots for decades to stay alert during long missions.”
“The report didn’t say why so many of those pills had been given out. But for many who served in the Trump White House, the investigation highlighted an open secret. According to interviews with four former senior administration officials and others with knowledge of the matter, the stimulant was routinely given to staffers who needed an energy boost after a late night, or just a pick-me-up to handle another day at a uniquely stressful job. As one of the former officials tells Rolling Stone, the White House at that time was ‘awash in speed.’”

I can see why you’d need to take drugs in order to cope with the awful reality of Trump being your boss.

ReplyDeleteGot covid. Briana brought it up from the East Bay, and as we live in a small room together and it's snowing outside, I got it.
Thankfully I'm boosted and it's no worse than a bad head cold.

ReplyDeleteBetween refusing to expedite the hearing and dismissal of Trump’s absurd immunity claims, and thereby dragging out his insurrection trial, and then ruling that Congress has to pass a special law in order for the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause to take effect, the wingnut justices have put their thumbs on the scale in a big way.
Turns out Trump was kind of right. The fix is in — just FOR him, not AGAINST him.
Arizona's blue mutt SinatorSenema is not running for re-election.
ReplyDeletemagt scotus is literally legislating from the bench, like McCTurtlefuckface declared was the reason he stacked the courts in magat favor and blocked so mANY OF oBAMA'S CHOICES.

ReplyDeleteI won't. I'm up and functioning after three days that weren't really that bad, and not 1) dead, like the more than a million US citizens or 2) in a hospital in Fresno on a fucking ventilator, both likely outcomes of not taking covid seriously.

“Arizona's blue mutt SinatorSenema is not running for re-election.”
ReplyDeleteA rare bit of good political news. The Democrats now have a decent chance of taking the seat, especially if the Republicans decide to nominate that froot loop Kari Lake.
Lawrence Lessig has implied that the SCOTUS ruling was that the official enforcement mechanism of the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause is the already existing federal criminal statute on insurrection, 18 U.S.C. §2383.
ReplyDeleteBut this ignores the historical precedent of people in the past who were disqualified from holding public office for insurrection without ever being convicted of a federal crime. (Including loads of Confederate officials.)
The idea that federal judges cannot make this determination on their own seems to be new.
"especially if the Republicans decide to nominate that froot loop Kari Lake."
ReplyDeleteIt's still Arizona and trump can still pull support so I wouldn't count that chicken.
Katie Porter didn't make it through the primary. Adam Schiff will make a fine senator, but we'll be the poorer for not having Katie in congress. Also, this will be the first time in 31 years we haven't had a woman senator here in California.
ReplyDeleteDon't know what Barbara Lee's plans are, but I hope to see more of her.

“It's still Arizona and trump can still pull support so I wouldn't count that chicken.”
ReplyDeleteNothing is guaranteed, but Kari Lake is pretty darn off-putting. Arizona isn’t Alabama, and her screeching about being cheated out of her alleged rightful victory in the Arizona governor’s race two years ago probably won’t have improved her prospects for another run at statewide office.
On balance, I think she will be an easier opponent to beat than a less MAGA-flavored Republican would be.

We hadn't heard of this when it passed in California last year, but now that it's taking effect, look at the democrats running away from it - billing you for electricity costs based on your W-2:
ReplyDeleteMany of California’s legislative Democrats are running from their idea to partly base electricity bills on the income of ratepayers. Yes, the idea has its challenges. But the status quo many Democrats seem to prefer is to continue sticking it lower-income Californians rather than making energy bills more equitable.
Climate change has created a property insurance crisis, an electricity crisis, and an overall public financing crisis. None of these crises are close to resolution while rates for Pacific Gas and Electric customers have doubled in just five years, largely driven by costs to fix and expand the grid.
So all the rich people who installed solar panels and windmills to cut down on their electric bills? Yeah, you're still paying double what you did a few years back to fund the poor who can't afford the skyrocketing electric costs of America's failed state.
Not keeping up with Covid boosters or not wearing a mask can make you a super spreader. Be responsible.
ReplyDelete“So all the rich people who installed solar panels and windmills to cut down on their electric bills? Yeah, you're still paying double what you did a few years back to fund the poor who can't afford the skyrocketing electric costs of America's failed state.”
ReplyDeleteObviously, this is nonsense. Even if utility rates per kilowatt-hr go up for you, as rich person, it shouldn’t matter that much for you because you shouldn’t be using very many kilowatt-hrs if you really did invest in windmills or solar panels.
Regardless, I am not terribly sympathetic to rich people whining about having to foot the bill to transition to green power. Either rich people can get socked hard to pay for that, or they can get socked even harder to pay for the damage done by climate change if we do nothing.
Those are the only fair options on the table.
Our PG&E bill was $280 this month, highest it's ever been here.

It’s been announced that Biden has decided to have our military build an actual port in Gaza so that food can be shipped in and its residents don’t all starve to death.
ReplyDeleteWhile I get what he is trying to do here, this is deeply frustrating.
Firstly, because Biden is doing this in order to try to shore up votes among left-wingers who are angry at so many Palestinian deaths. The problem here is that it creates a real risk that Hamas could attack and kill American service people while they are attempting to build this port. Which would then cause a bunch of other people to NOT want to vote for Biden. This good deed could backfire badly.
Secondly, because it is totally unnecessary. Why go to all this trouble? Just threaten to cut off all armaments to Israel if they don’t let supplies through their blockade of Gaza. It’s crazy that we have to, in essence, work to make up for Israeli wrongdoing instead of just forcing the Israelis to do the right thing in the first place.

Biden’s efforts to compensate for the vengefulness and cruelty of the Israeli government, instead of forcing them to allow adequate food aid into Gaza, are already having bad consequences.
ReplyDeleteOne of the humanitarian food parcels that was being airdropped into Gaza had its parachute fail to open. It crushed a civilian home, killing 5 people and wounding 10.
Once again, wouldn’t it be easier to just force the Israelis to stop starving Gaza? I can at least understand Israel’s drive to destroy or at least degrade Hamas, which inevitably will result in civilian casualties. But I don’t get why we are letting Netanyahu get away with inflicting additional punishment on the civilian population by denying food and medical supplies. That’s both morally wrong and bad politics.
“This carpet bagger wants back in Congress. Apparently he thrives on lies and humiliation.”
ReplyDeleteI hope the election authorities triple-check his petitions for getting on the primary ballot. All the signatures will probably turn out to be George Santos!

"Once again, wouldn’t it be easier to just force the Israelis to stop starving Gaza?"
ReplyDeleteNope. Netanyahu and his band of right wing freaks are so far gone that it's easier to try and build a pier in the ocean for freight without setting foot onshore than it is to get that imbecile to open a gate in the wall five miles away.
So the little punk boy couldn't be bothered to stand up even once until the mention of John Lewis. Either that or he got an alert on his phone that his son was pounding his pork...

“Nope. Netanyahu and his band of right wing freaks are so far gone that it's easier to try and build a pier in the ocean for freight without setting foot onshore than it is to get that imbecile to open a gate in the wall five miles away.”
ReplyDeleteI don’t believe that.
While it is definitely true that politely asking Netanyahu to stop starving civilians and appealing to his nonexistent conscience will get you nowhere, if you take away his bombs, his war on Hamas grinds to a halt. Not to mention that at some point, Israel won’t even be able to defend itself against its neighbors, including the hated Iran.
If the US turns off the tap of weaponry because of the food & medicine blockade of Gaza, Israelis will absolutely lose their minds with fear and Netanyahu will be forced out of office if he doesn’t do an immediate U-turn to get the US back onside.
There would, of course, be a backlash in this country to cutting Israel off (and possibly no longer defending it at the UN, either), but there is already mounting backlash to Gazan deaths, which is not likely to be mollified by airdrops and this temporary seaport Biden plans to build.
If famine and disease take hold, and Gazans start dying, not by the tens of thousands, but the hundreds of thousands, that is going to be very bad for Biden’s re-election chances. He should be more conscious of that.
Netanjackass is a menace to polite society and should be dealt with as such. No matter how many Palestinians are murdered or victims of war crimes, Hamas will never be wiped out.
ReplyDeleteThis whole shithole mess is dumbass dubya's bastard child. He was warned not to take out Saddam Hussein b ecause it would leave Iran as the dominant power in the M E and that chicken has come home to roost.
BTW, where is the dumbass hiding out? No one seems to bother to consult him on foreign policy or anything else for that matter.
Biden should crack down on Israel's mass murdering war criminal but magats will never go along with him.
ReplyDeleteIsrael is perfectly capable of building its own weapons, thank you very much.
Those fucks even have nukes. We don't have nearly as much sway over them with our defense assistance as some would imagine. Would they be utterly fucked in the long run if we stopped giving them weapons? Sure. Their hostile neighbors would soon enough get sick of their hostile ranting and fuck them up but good.
But maybe not like some folks imagine. Historically, they are good at fighting when they are outmatched. And even their Orthodox extremists are rethinking their distance from the military. And the Gaza situation is not a long run problem. Long run they are all dead, the way Israel is behaving.
I'm not worried about them getting overrun, I'm worried about them turning into a worse right wing theocratic state than they are already and shoving our wingnuts even farther in that direction than they already are.
The Palestinians have been their apartheid chattel for their entire existence as a country, expecting them to all of the sudden start treating them like human beings is fucking delusional.
