Still on lock! The field in captivity, day two.

This has to be quick. I don't have much time before Mrs. Field gets back. (Sometimes a woman shopping can be a good thing)

I knew I couldn't just go quit this thing cold turkey.

Some quick thoughts: First and foremost. Thanks to all of you who put one down for the kid with The Black Weblog Awards. We won (all of us) in the best political/news blog category. This award means a lot because it's, well, black folks. It's always good to get recognition from your own. So we did it.

I was at the "Newseum" yesterday with some folks who are holding it down for the First Amendment. That museum is all that, and I would recommend it for all of you. Mrs. Field and I actually got a personal tour from the brother (Frank Bond) who produced an excellent documentary about the civil rights era (Good dude) and who seems to be a big honcho over there with the Freedom Forum people. He actually interviewed me for a show that should be on PBS some time later. It had to do with journalism and the role new media is playing in it's development. I think I was there so the the folks could get a field Negro's perspective on things. You know, ask the tough questions: Like why aren't more people of color represented in the main stream media? And where are our stories being reported?

Hey, what's all the fuss about the chosen one speaking to the little school kids? Don't presidents do this kind of stuff all the time? Although I guess we really never had a president like this one before.

Some folks will consider Roger Stevens a hero. I won't. It's not cool slapping a kid in public. (In public black folks. In public! I know you all tear up those behinds behind closed doors, so don't even start with me.) Especially another persons kid.

I guess you all have seen the video by now of that dude from Oregon doing like Joe Frazier on the kid from Boise State. Yep, that kid was talking smack and the dude let him have it. (Why do thoughts of Shabazz come to mind when I see that video?) Here is the thing: What dude did was wrong. He should not have punched an opposing player like that. (The guy didn't even his helmet on.) I don't care what the guy said or did to him, (well, unless he called him a nigger, or talked about his mama) he has got to practice restraint and self control. Some of these folks already think that us brothers can't control our tempers.-- I wonder where they got that impression? --so we have to work extra hard to control our emotions. Dude might have just cost himself millions of dollars because he was a projected as a high draft pick in the NFL. That other dude probably wasn't even going to get drafted. Sad.

Imagine sending your daughter off to a fine institution like Spelman only to be given the news that she was shot to death by some ignorant ass urban terrorist while walking and minding her own damn business. This shit has got to stop!

I gotta go. I will holla later.

  2. I am glad that idiot from Oregon got cut from the team. Regardless of what he claims his motivation was, he acted like a little girl both when he threw the sucker punch and then afterwards when he had to be restrained! He was actually hysterical!

On another note: The contractors guarding the embassy in Afghanistan. As a black man, I know you, like I were relieved to see that there were no brothers there doing "butt shots" or what ever other perversity those guys were into.

Note to DJ Mike "sometimes getting "in" with the in crowd isn't worth the price of admission."

P.S. Do you want us to write Ms. Field emails and try and get our brother a "kitchen pass"so you can enjoy your holiday too?

  7. The Spelman student getting killed was a tragedy. It's a shame so many HBCU's are in terrible crime ridden area's.Clark needs to put some fences or something up around the campus.

On the football thing: I think the player who punched that guy ought to have been suspended but for his entire senior season? That to me was over-kill. How about half of the season. I think that would have been fair.

And where is the precedent to suspend a player for a season for punching another player? I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened. Has anyone else been suspened for a season for doing this?

    Bro. Field,

You may want to update your HNOTD winner. Michael Strayhan has officially declared himself not to be an African American, but just an American. Sure, he's free to call himself whatever he wants. However, he doesn't strike me as being someone who realizes that his "American experience" is due to having always been a great athlete, and having a gazillion dollars in the bank; Not because we're just a bunch of "Americans." Most people's lives do NOT mirror his (especially ones of his hue). Additionally, it's almost as if he's dropping a hint that he's gained some sort of enlightenment (no, not the en-lighten-mint that MJ got :0) that the rest of us need. All I have to say is this. In the real World we ARE who we are, but if the people who have REAL power see us some other way, what they think of us trumps what we think of ourselves, because they have the ability to influence our destinies, and not vice versa. For that, bro. Field, I'll proclaim that "Field's Field hand's" HNOTD is Mr. Strayhan..LOL, big time!

It's ok, I am pretty sure Mrs Field already know that a Field Negro "aint gonna do right" to save his life. Congrats on the award. By the way dont do like some of the other negroes and issues an apology down the road for all this truth you are sharing with us.

"where is the precedent to suspend a player for a season for punching another player?"

It's still taboo for a black fist to meet a white face on national television. It's almost as bad as if the brother had killed a dog. He's lucky they didn't give him jail time, although that might still be coming.

  13. Field Hand G,
I am sure that on the first Columbus ship to touch America there was an African, and our claim to America is as much as any with European ancestry. Since most Africans didn't immigrate and African slaves built America, and much of America is African, why is there a need to Hyphenate our identity. Were are American, although we are people of African decent. Calling ourselves American gives ownership to something we created, it is not dismissing the blood and sweat in this land.

I may have been a second class citizen, but never have I been a second class American.

You are so right, Field. But the truth is many brothers CAN'T control their tempers and that dude from Oregon and Shabazz are classic examples. They are possessed by the demon of ruptured shame that triggers RAGE beyond their control. It is not ordinary anger that can be restrained by the holder. Rage has a flashpoint that sets it off like the wildfires of California.

Congratulations on your award. You are very deserving of it.

"why is there a need to Hyphenate our identity."

Why not? No one questions Italian-Americans or Irish-Americans. So why can't we claim America while still calling ourselves African-Americans? It seems it's only ever people of color who are called on to forget their ancestry. Sort of like how some people refer to people whose ancestors came from Spanish speaking countries as Hispanic.

If someone says they are Hispanic exactly what does that tell you about them? Nothing really. But if someone says they are a Boricua or Chicano that tells you something about them.

So a Black person just saying they're American doesn't really say much. Were your ancestors enslaved in America? Doesn't tell you. Did your people immigrate to the U.S. willingly? Doesn't tell you.

  19. Black folk need to learn violence ani't the answer.I know its in you genes but damn.

Maybe Obama can put some kinda drug in kool-aid that kills that gene in you people.

Bush tried to put a drug in Snapple that made black men sterile. That didn't work for shit.

fields, congrats on winning that award. This is only the second time i've ever voted for a black man.The first was Jesse Jackson in 1988.

That negro swept the south and still lost.Damn racist northerners.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Monie,
No one questions Italian-Americans or Irish-Americans.

Exactly, but most of us are not children of immigrants. The Black experience here is purely American it is not Brazilian, Jamaican or Guyanan. Being African is also a vague concept, because many of us do not know our origins in African; not a country, kinship group or language. We only connect to Africa in some general aspects of culture that is common to sub Saharan Africa, but our fundamental commonality is in the slave Diaspora.

A person can call themselves whatever they want. You may chose too, but I have chosen not to. I do not go around challenging people about what they call themselves. I do not feel because one would chose not to call themselves African American, that it should be a reason to attain the status of HNOTD.

That Boise player got just what he deserved. There are many instigators, they are found in sports, politics, schools everywhere. In politics they go by the name BECK, Dobbs, Hannity,Buchanan, just to name a few. S0, I realize the young man who threw the punch will probably lose millions; however, I am so tired of those individuals that are the catalyst that start a bunch of strife and they are able to walk away from it. The only person we ar talking about is the person who threw the punch. What about the instigator ?? We have pundits that start stuff and walk away. Think about that for a moment.

If anything, you've probably understated it...the last two examples (i.e., Barry being dissed for addressing school kids and asking them to study harder AND the Oregon punk being suspended for his ENTIRE Senior season) prove to me that not only is racism rampant in this land, it's getting worse daily, and will continue unless guys like me get off our collective asses and try to at least admit it, and then perhaps, try to do something about it...I seen the future and it don't look good at all.

Uhhhhhhh, Hathor. Do you really think that some Aryan maggot will have a change of heart because Mike Strayhan calls himself an American. The INTENT of the Ad. is foolish, short sighted, and contrary to history. We went from being niggers, to Negroes, to Black people, to African Americans, and now, some want to make the BIG jump to being an American (smh). See? THE JOB TITLE CHANGED, BUT THE DAMN STATUS OF THOSE HOLDING THE TITLE IS JUST LIMPING ALONG. So think about this non-hyphenated term: NIGGER! That's what the teabaggers regard you in private, and whether you know it or not, they still have more power than you do. We've only had TWO Black Senators in U.S. History, and bunch of house House folks, and only ONE real Supreme Court Justice, yet everyone is all of a sudden one big happy family. Why does our language have to be different than theirs. We let the right usurp the word liberty, coded racism so it's acceptable, made liberal and progressive a dirty word and now they can destroy us, even as their agenda has failed.

They're gonna be a hundred times worse! And now who in congress be they democrat or republican, left or right is going to compromise on health care when they think if the squeal loud enough they'll get whatever they want?

I'll tell you someone else I'm mad at that hasn't gotten the scorn he deserves for this sh*t: Rahm Emannuel. Rahm was supposed to this big bad pitbull who could give Obama all the cover he needed, crack some skulls when congress got too rowdy or GOPers that got too crazy, and grease the wheels whenever necessary -- to play hot tempered to Obama's cool reserve. He portrayed himself like a political Don Corleone. Where the h*ll has he been? I think he's compromised so many times he doesn't know the difference between a compromise and a victory. Ultimately, this is on Obama but Rahm needs to hear some of it for the badass talk he likes to give.

I can't believe the hallmark so far of the Admin is wimping out. Please, somebody wake Obama up. There's still time but he needs to land some serious nutbusting punches soon.

One of the two you mentioned was an avid spokes mouth for "free" Blacks, but cared nothing about those still in bondage. He was a minister, too....damn, that shit goes wayyyyyy back :0) And you think Roland Burris and....never mind. If you don't know the difference between tokenism and real power, fine. For the last 20 years, I've given of myself in the ways that these people are speaking. And we (on the left) need this image to establish the fact that we ARE on higher ground than they. They preach with words, and we embrace deeds. Believe it or not, "some people, some place" are using a cooked up idea of mine to fight paralysis (I know, I have no way of proving this, but it's true). Here's the thing with that.Obama needs to appease Republicans because he knows if Kennedy/Obamacare passes he's going to have to provide cover for Democrats in 2010.

If only the rinos vote for Kennedy/Obamacare than Obama faces 2 choices-----

Drop the public option and lose his liberal base.

Pass it with the public option and only rino support and suffer a major defeat in 2010.

The left has always sat on their collective asses; and it's hard to break a very bad habit. Laziness, unskillfulness and undependability are the negative trademarks of Democrats. They have big arrogant mouths that they can never back up (like Blacks are known for-remember Gates?).

We all (white and black) have a vested interest in the outcome. Many of us are seeing the future through the prism of the past, and I agree: "it don't look good at all."

But know this: I've only begun to fight!

    Remember I'm a child of the 60's.

You will tee hee one to many times and destroy more than a reputation and you will not be able to count on passive resistance to save your ass.

You chicken hawks will not be wanting to deal with old crazy Vietnam Vets. I know you will be sending your trash to do your dirty work as in the days of the Citizens Council, but now, there is no fear.

I'll throw more than a tantrum.

@Hathor "You chicken hawks will not be wanting to deal with old crazy Vietnam Vets. I know you will be sending your trash to do your dirty work as in the days of the Citizens Council, but now, there is no fear."

I too am a Vietnam Vet but I have no desire to hurt anyone. Why add more anger and hurt to America and to a world that is already overflowing with it?

Try visiting the Vietnam Wall and maybe some of your craziness will be transformed so that when it's time to die, you will pass away in peace....Enjoy Labor Day.

"You are so immature and naive. Looking back on your grandiose comments since Obama's election should humble you and make you wiser. But it hasn't. Instead you throw temper tantrums like a 2-year old, and see red like Granny."

    Shut the fuck up. Seriously.

Sometimes you gotta be blunt with it. Anonymous Cowards such as these deserve no flowery or clever insults, just blunt ones.

I agree with you on the Oregon situation. Blount went way overboard. Having played in college myself you come to realize taunting and trash talking is part of the game. No one likes it, that's part of the reason why you try your damn best to win. Also, as far as Spelman is concerned, I have a daughter and would love for her to go to Spelman, I even live in Atlanta but if something like that happened to my daughter I don't know what I would do. I can tell you though, that movie "A Time to Kill" comes to mind because I don't know if I could just sit there, do nothing and accept something senseless like that....

  69. For all these people saying that this Oregon kid got what he deserved (being suspended from his football team for the rest of the season by his university) go back and look at the whole video. The Boise State kid not only verbally taunted him he put his hands on him to make his point. A Boise State coach was on his way to grab his kid after seeing him taunt the Oregon player. Then the Boise kid was dropped like a rock.

I love all this I would of just did nothing talk cause its not true you would of at least reacted cause that's human. Yes the Oregon was suspended from playing football but he's still on schoarlship and attends practice and all his classes. This suspension was done by his university not the NCAA so I wouldn't be suprised that if he is reinstated before the end of the season.

By Boise State not even making their kid sit for at least one game will hurt them in the way coaches and writers vote for them in the college football polls. Boise State is a non-BCS school so they basically have to win every game to get to a good bowl game and don't think that after that first loss some writer or coach is sitting back thinking "but y'all didn't sit your guy and he started it" and give them a low ranking. Oregon stood tall and did the right thing and karma comes around quick in football and I wouldn't be too worried about that Oregon kid missing upon his NFL payday; he is currently ranked the the no. 2 running back in college, so he'll be fine. Didn't hurt Ray Magamula (sp) when he was dancing behind Erin Andrews, a Samoan grinding behind blone, blue eyed white woman lol (that peeping tom video was messed up too). But he plays for the Bengals so it might of cost him lol

  70. @Truth in Lurking Dept - I'm so glad to hear you say this. Now if only more of us "white" folks would see the truth and then fight for justice.

@Black Diaspora - I should have known you would be there to offer moral support. Again, I thank you for your willingness to educate me and others.
