Babies going once, going twice...SOLD! (To the nice A-merry-can with the two car garage.)

This story coming out of Haiti these past few days is troubling. And it has nothing to do with the earthquake. At least not directly. The story I am talking about is the one about the A-merry-cans from potato country being accused of human trafficking.

It's troubling because I initially felt that if these people were really trying to help these poor children and got caught up in something that they had no control over, it would be unfair to them. No one thinks it's cool to punish good people for a mistake.

This is how I started out feeling. But then I started reading more about the story and I learned the following:

" PORT-AU-PRINCE - The leader of a group of American missionaries charged Thursday with kidnapping for trying to take 33 children out of earthquake-ravaged Haiti faces legal troubles in her home state of Idaho as well.

Laura Silsby, 40, is the subject of several lawsuits accusing her and her Boise-based company, PersonalShopper.com, of failing to pay her employees. She also has a history of failing to pay debts, and the $358,000 house at which she founded her nonprofit religious group, New Life Children's Refuge, was foreclosed upon in December, according to a report in her hometown newspaper, the Idaho Statesman.
The Boise newspaper said Silsby has been named in at least eight civil lawsuits and 14 unpaid wage claims. "

That's Ms. Silsby looking like she is in a line dance with the Haitian policeman. Now I am thinking that the Haitian authorities might have had their ducks in a row after all. Apparently this is a real problem (child trafficking) and it has the Haitian authorities and world relief agencies concerned. An earthquake and subsequent total devastation of a country should not be an excuse to break its laws. Just as the looting of property and lawlessness should not be tolerated, neither should the looting of the countries most precious resource; its children. If Ms. Silsby and company were trying to pull a fast one, shame on them. Trying to profit from tragedy is never cool.

"On Thursday, she and nine other Americans appeared in a Haitian court, following their arrest on Jan. 29 for allegedly trying to cross into the Dominican Republic with a busload of Haitian children they said were orphaned by the quake. A prosecutor forwarded their case to a judge to determine their fate.

Silsby said at the hearing: "We simply wanted to help the children. We petition the court not only for our freedom but also for our ability to continue to help."'

Ms. Silsby, I sure hope you weren't trying to help the children by selling them to the highest bidder. [Story] Let's see now, $10,000 per kid, and there were 33 of them, that's not a bad pay day. I wonder if they would have donated the money to any of the Haitian relief funds?

It bothers me the way people have been reacting to these children since the earthquake hit. Everyday on the news they made it a point to show some new family adopting these kids. I'm all for children being taken into a loving home with a family with good intentions. But they were just shipping some of these babies anywhere. It's no wonder that these weirdos thought that they could just take some. I remember seeing one story on cnn where a husband and wife adopted 2 Haitian children. They took them around the rest of the family and friends and one of the women was like, "Oh, I want one." That rubbed me the wrong way. These are human beings not pets.

If they really wanted to help the children have a better future then they would help rebuild the orphanages, schools, and other infrastructure type things.

If they were truly concerned about the children's welfare, then they would go through proper channels (which they are familiar with) in order to arrange appropriate adoptions.

Maybe they had good intentions but they certainly didn't exhibit good sense.

  7. This is the most fuckwitted thing you have posted since I started reading your blog a week ago.

You haven't one single shred of suggestion by anyone in a position to know that this woman wanted to sell these children. But that didn't stop you from slanting your headline and your closing "hope" that way.

  9. I don't even feel like getting into a long post. I've stated similar thoughts on a previous thread regarding these issues.

I honestly believe Ms. Silsby and others. were planning to sell these poor children for a profit. I hope they hit her hard, and I hope she serves time in a future Haitian prison for many-many long years. Even if she meant well, I hope they make an example out of her either way. These children are not possessions, nor little cute fury animals you can take without considering they might still have human-being parents alive somewhere.

Furthermore, I have a painful feeling that majority of these people wanting to adopt black Haitian 'orphans' are doing so to either gain social novelty attention, sexual child abuse access, or to obtain domestic servants. I know many of these children need a loving home regardless of race, but I have a bad feeling about this. Brace yourselves, we will be hearing a lot of sad stories from these poor children in years to come. There must be some other way.

Hey Field I saw an interview with two of the parents who said that they let their children go with a minister they trusted who said the Idaho folks were going to take the children to the Dominican Republic to educate them. One of the mothers asked the reporter if they wouldn't jump at the chance to improve their childrens lot.

And in answer to the nitwit that tried to jump on you Field there is plenty evidence that the Idaho group intended to put these children up for adoption in the Dominican Republic. And the adoptions were going to be done at a price.

So this is as bad as folks think it is. These folks just got caught.

I don't know that black and white folks see this diffently I mean it is what it is. I shutter to think if someone would think that its okay to take someones kids under false pretenses and then attempt to give them to someone else at a price.

I found this story deeply disturbing. Even parents and legal guardians are required to have a birth certificate or passport when traveling with a child.

Let's say a Haitian parent says I can't afford to keep my child.....only a thief would seperate a kids from his family. No papers. No documents.

It would be easier to get them food and shelter for the family and a whole lot cheaper.

These folks knew exactly what they were doing and thought the Haitian govt too dumb to figure it out.

Cause as you know....white people are smarter than everyone else on the planet....or so they think.

I was born in Pocatello, Idaho and grew up there until I was 9. That part of Idaho was an awesome place to grow up, back in the late 60's, early 70's. "That 70's Show" wasn't that far off from what it seemed to be. We were poor, but we were at peace. We had everything we needed in large part with thanks to the state and I did grow up in a religion that was as diverse as the population of Idaho could provide. All that to say, I don't personally know if all of it has turned into this insidious place that gets into the news. Could be. I hope not.

I do know that when we moved to Alabama in '74, the atmosphere there was immensely more repressive. Being poor there was pure D. HELL. It might be that being poor in '74 was way worse than being poor in '73 or before, but really it was more than that.

Anyway, I don't think it impossible that the people who are taking over Idaho are from Alabama.

Some have suggested it might just be Silsby that tried to pull this off, but I doubt she could do it without them knowing what she was up to. Especially that many children? It would have to be a quick thing with just one child much less 33. She would need strict discipline in her group to try that, I would think.

You summed up pretty much what they were thinking and doing to a tee and I totally agree with you.

Back during slavery days they used buy infants and children to raise them up to be slaves or sex-slaves while they were young. Children were easier to handle and break in than adults. Some slaveowners would only buy children. They'd beat them with anything they could put their hands on and maimed some of them in the process. Sometimes they killed them in the process. The women slaveowners were worser and more brutal.

People fail to realize that slavery wasn't that long ago in our history. In fact, there were still a lot of ex-slaves living in the late 1950s. Black folks who post on here that were born in the late 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and even the 50s probably knew some of their relatives who were ex-slaves.

@field -- I think the fact that their home church hasn't uttered a peep speaks volumes. I don't think these people are real missionaries. Instead, I think they're evil people who thought they could take advantage of a terrible situation without getting caught and I think their motives may be much worse than many suppose. I say that for many reasons but among them is the fact that real baptist groups and other denominations have run real orphanages in Haiti for many years. They're a lot of things but fly by night isn't one of them. I remember reading about a Church in Memphis whose orphanage was destroyed and another elsewhere who lost a child who was in the final stages of adoption that had taken years to complete.

No, I think these folks saw that the government of Haiti as well as the State Dept. had agreed to expedite adoptions that were already in works because of the humanitarian situation and thought they'd be able to steal these children based on lies, the reputations of real charities, and likely false paperwork to get them out of DR. I fear where these children might've been bound and I don't necessarily think it was A-merry-ca which has fairly strict policies about having all the right paperwork.

To me, these people are nothing but thieves. And my fear is that they may be much worse than just adoption scammers.

  33. I am wondering if all those adoptions were legit now? And how would they know if the buildings and papers were under rubble? I don't think that they should have let any of those children leave until things settled down more than they have. Most of those children were toddlers and not older kids.

@granny -- I've never once thought you were. :) Truth is, I think very highly of you. I was just trying to understand your line of thinking on that. I hope that much was clear but if not mea culpa!

It's always been my understanding that even dowry slaves and inherited slaves, while kept separate in case of divorce, were still controlled by husbands/closest male relatives when it came right down to it. Am I mistaken on that? IOW, at best a woman could do as much as the men in her life allowed.

No doubt women can be cruel but IMO female power has almost always been somewhat checked whenever push comes to shove. Sort of like an overseer, they can only get away with what the master condones if that makes sense.

They run medical clinics & orphanages in Haiti, they were there before the quake & they'll be there when we're sending money for floods in Bangladesh. & they don't push religious indoctrination, which I can almost guarantee was near the top of the New Life Children's Refuge agenda.

Filled Negro - just imagine if a CREDIT REPORT was admissible evidence for every petty drug crime that you and Jody defended against in Philly? YOU would one day be listened in the US Supreme Court docket as you doggedly FOUGHT AGAINST the attempted linkage of such irrelevant points - THE SAME VIOLATION THAT YOU JUST COMMITTED AGAINST THEM.

I listed a series of questions that must be answered before I render my final opinion:

    1) How much effort did these people try to find the parents before taking the kids?

    2) They claim that some of the parents willingly gave up their kids to find a better life. Did these people document the transaction using a digital camera?

    3) Do these people have a history of going into places and "kidnapping" children?

    4) Can they produce a pre-existing plan that details what they were planning to do once they reached the DR?

These are the line of questioning that a person who is not a part of the "New All White Jury" would want to hear before rendering judgment upon these people's intentions.

  41. CF, i have to say i usually just scan your rants.

but you're dead wrong on this story; field is simply presenting the facts--not ALL of them because of space--but the salient ones to whet your interest.

do your own research. i thought you were a pretty smart guy, but you should know that slander is verbal and libel is written...ie, blogging would be libelous, but not there and truth is a defense. fair comment and public figures and all that...

fact is the answers to many of your questions are already known--i heard an interview with the pastor of this woman's church on NPR who said, in fact, they had no paperwork and that they were asked by an orphanage in the DR to help move the kids. he said he had known her only a year and she did not actually own or run an adoption agency or orphanage. yes, these are all claims. nothing more so far.

fact is, there's not been any evidence yet that adoptions were ever the motive. this woman has a reputation as a bad business owner NOT a human trafficker. she had rented a bunch of hotel rooms to put the kids....i don't know how she got each kid.

my guess, from reading the whole story linked her and other places, is that she was going on some kind of person mission as a "savior" to burnish her reputation and avoid her feb 22 trial on some of the shady business crap she pulled as president of personalshopper.com. did you bother to read about that stuff?

maybe is a human trafficker, maybe not.

and field's primary line of work is NOT as a defense attorney but as a special master for the philly family court system deciding child custody and related issues.

so give me a break. and another non-sensical thing about your attack--your contention might have some merit if he was a PROSECUTOR, not a defense attorney, eh? he sees only criminals as a defense attorney, no, the analogy would be he'd see only innocent people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. UnConn... what is NOT in dispute is they attempted to take these kids out of Haiti into the DR without papers, birth cetrificates, or permission. As we have all heard, there have been many stories of children being adopted out of Haiti in the last month. All of those adoptions had been in the works and the reason they were successful was because ALL of the people involved had documentation and permission.

These people, on the other hand, got caught and are pleading "ignorant do-gooder." Given the global very real problem of child trafficking, the Haitian government is doing the right thing in arresting them. If they indeed had paperwork, and all of the other questions you asked are answered in a way that proves their innocence, then they will be just fine. But, frankly, the background information that Field provided on their other legal problems certainly is alarming. And, every day the history of a person charged with a crime is repeated in courts... at the bail hearing and in negotiating pleas... even for small possession cases.

It seems they did have a 'detailed' plan after all (a .pdf file link in the link below), and it included asking God to pave the way for their work (after all, they didn't plan on going about it through any human authority):

    "Prayer Requests

    the way before us
    • For God to continue to grant favor with the Dominican Government in allowing us to

The Dominican Republic is the child prostitution capital of the Western Hemisphere. Many of the children forced into sex slavery come from Haiti.

Turns out, at least 20 of the Children in the group "rescued" had living parents.

This one is beginning to stink.

BTX3, i agree. this this bullshyt stinks from Haiti to Canada. I believe they may get some considerable time. Too bad the leader roped in a few innocent church members who were trying to do community service. She has now destroyed many lives along with hers. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Haiti has some of the strictest foreign adoption laws in the hemisphere for a reason, they don't want to see their culture die as their children disappear to the US and become non-Haitian. This is a wise policy - ask an American Indian how adopting out worked against our communities.

You don't get to just go into a community and steal children, not even in the name of charity.

I hope she rots in Haitian prison, I really do.

    ReplyDelete
  71. FN don't know if you have heard the latest but apparently the group leader, Silsby, was told by a Dominican official she would be arrested if she tried to take children out of Haiti without proper documentation. She did it anyway.

Also she claimed the children could be adopted even though at least two-thirds of the children are not orphans.

The group has been formally charged. Maybe the other nine didn't know what was going on but Silsby did.

There are a bunch of religious charities on the ground helping. If they wanted to help do "God's work", there were/are plenty of opportunities.

Is this group even affiliated with the official Baptist Church? The whole thing is shady.

  74. Slavery still exists today and Haiti is a hotspot for it. There are many children here in the U.S. that have been brought in with false documentation by an "aunt" or "uncle" who are forced to work as unpaid domestic servants.
Field, you are right that blacks and whites see this differently. This black sees black children being kidnapped. I think that some of these "church people" think they are doing the right thing. Others see "perfectly serviceable little negroes going to waste.

Ms. Silsby has nothing to worry about because America is the ruler of the Western Hemisphere and will not let a country like Haiti imprison a white Christian American.

I think Haiti knows that also. They are just going through the legal motions, and then they will let her go...don't want to end up in a war with US like Panama.

  76. I have adopted two children, one born in Detroit and another born in Addis Ababa.

My first thought when I saw orphanages crumble and kids left without parents is how I would consider adopting a Haitian child too. I see my kids in their faces. Then I put my emotions aside and come to reality.

These kids have rights as do their biological parents. Some kids won’t be orphans, but may just be separated from their parents. If adopted without properly documenting and checking out each history, both parent and child may grow old thinking each other is dead.

The last thing an adoptive parent wants to think is that their child had in some way come to them improperly.

Before the quake, it was a slow process to adopt from Haiti. I hear that it was required that each adoption be signed by the Prime Minister himself. Recent airlifts of kids to Pennsylvania were to help kids whose adoptions were previously finalized or nearly so. I know of one family who had been waiting three years to finish the paperwork to adopt a child. The earthquake triggered a change in Haitian rules that previously required that adoptive parents be married for 10 years before adopting. They dropped it a few years to expedite some adoptions, but the Haitian government did not otherwise change the adoption laws or rights of that child.

It is important that these children be protected. It may be necissary to care for orphans on the ground while proper proceedures are created to find them suitable parents, whether in Haiti or elsewhere.

I just hope that they can receive love in the meantime to avoid any additonal trauma.

This is my first visit to your blog. I will return.

    ReplyDelete
  77.
Field there is plenty evidence that the Idaho group intended to put these children up for adoption in the Dominican Republic. And the adoptions were going to be done at a price.
Mellaneous:

Can we apply LOGIC to your claims?

IF these Black Haitian kids are so VALUABLE and thus were going to fetch cash for these WHITE Americans -........WHY didn't Dominican Republic have a little gate in its border fence BEFORE the earthquake to allow CHILDREN to be sent through to their side of the island BEFORE this calamity?

Some of you all are so much like your long time adversaries its not even funny.

  78.
-i heard an interview with the pastor of this woman's church on NPR who said, in fact, they had no paperwork and that they were asked by an orphanage in the DR to help move the kids. he said he had known her only a year and she did not actually own or run an adoption agency or orphanage. yes, these are all claims. nothing more so far.

fact is, there's not been any evidence yet that adoptions were ever the motive. this woman has a reputation as a bad business owner NOT a human trafficker. she had rented a bunch of hotel rooms to put the kids....i don't know how she got each kid.
My friend maria:

I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THESE PEOPLE GOING TO TRIAL!!!
    They broke the law.

I hope that the trial works to establish MOTIVATION/INTENT and then renders a judgment based on the MALICIOUSNESS of the intent.

Again - I need to find the news story of American parents who were in the middle of adoptions of Haitian who were struggling to expedite their adoption process of some other kids in the wake of the Earthquake.

All of these kids were residents of an orphanage.

In the end these people should have OBEYED THE LAW.

I am only distressed at the outright HATRED that some people have. These are the very people who call others HATERS.

    ReplyDelete
  79. CF, if many of them it seems had living parents, why were they in an orphanage? i am not so sure they were.

in any case, we agree--the truth should out a trial. but at the moment haiti has no functioning govt. so they might be stewing in prison for a while, unless the u.s. intervenes to get them out. so far i think they official position is they will not get involved and that the law must be followed.

china has a terrible problem with this as well. this is a heart-breaking documentary i saw about six months ago that shows boys are often the target and the govt. does nothing at all to help the parents whose children who are missing.

  82. The smiling face of evil itself.

We are living in the last days. It saddens me to witness the things taking place. Yes, we all do wrong, but some tings are just sickening and pure evil.

    ReplyDelete
  83. btx3, you said some things, that reminded me of something I was trying to hold back. The probability of anything "good" coming out of black children being shipped to D.R. (or shipped to most other places for that matter) would be fiercely low. This also applies to many other children being "rescued" out of certain places in Africa, South America etc. Buying black and brown children for domestic servitude and sexual gratification has always been high profit in the black market to this day.

For weeks I was reluctant to express my true feelings regarding Haiti because I feared I would only feed the racist trolls and risk my jugular. But I have to say it, some of these Haitian parents/people are well aware of their children's faith. But poverty and 'cultural" ignorance plays a role in places like Haiti. Please no hate mail, I've had my entire life to make this observation. My native home lies smack in the middle of the Caribbean Diaspora - I know what I speak. The Carib is not a monolith, and my home and my particular island-distinguished culture has paid a high price for having the American flag being dropped on it generations ago. All my life I've seen my share of the high immigrant influx from black neighboring islands, and non-blacks who come to exploit from all over the world (a little NY in the Carib).

Not only do white and non-black criminals, thieves, pedophiles, exploiters use my home (and other Carib islands) as a safe heaven among the black and "ignorant", but I've observed many other black "island" people with their differencing cultures and nasty customs that routinely prey on black females and black children as a way of living - this painfully includes Haiti right up on the charts.

That being said, I also feel compelled to make another disheartening confession. Even after the earthquake in Haiti, I've had mix feelings of giving sympathy, and I really don't want to anticipate anymore immigrants in my homeland (including Haitians). However, these ill thoughts are something I'm trying hard to work out in my own way.

I am touched by the response of Americans, including whites to this crisis. There is a video in the NY Times today about pilots who are flying there personal planes into Haiti and making deliveries of food medicine and supplies to the outlying areas. Just about all of them are white. I think all this shows that when given the opportunity most humans will act humane. That is the problem with racism it causes humans to act toward there brothers and sisters of different hues and colors, in ways they ordinarily wouldn't

Field and others I never took Unconstructive Noise to be an attention seeker. But after looking at his posts on this one I suspect that HE CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!

He has tried to question the facts in this case while "enough" are out there to say something is wrong here. And what gets me is that he keeps commenting on it. I mean there is nothing to defend. I haven't seen him defending folks who look like my as veraciously as he defending these folks.

I saw with my own eyes the interviews with two of the children's, mothers it was on either CNN's website or the Miami Heralds which BTW has some of the most up to date news on the Haiti crisis because of the Haiitian emigree population and because of its proximity. They have 15 reporters their alone.

Anyway the mothers said they did not give their children away, but were told they were going to get a good education in the DR (temporarily)and they assumed it was some sort of Christian place they were going. And BTW there is much hatred and bigotry directed at Haitians by folks in the Dominican. Read the history its chilling. Trujillo murdered thousands of Haitians in the late 1930's while the world -- including the US and Haitis sell-out govt watched

And Unconstructive Noise is pretending that he can't see the wrong in all this and that somehow they should be given the benefit of the doubt. And then making matters worse, accusing folks of being haters for talking about this dreadful event.

If anyone should not be given the benefit of the doubt its is "unreconstructed verbiage."

Clarence Thomas has the AUDACITY to base his rulings upon the assumption that BLACK PEOPLE ARE EQUAL UNDER THE LAW.

YOU and other "Inferiorists" who like to transact based upon our inferiority like to make a TRANSACTION upon our assumed inferiority based upon your receive of something in the end.

    Anon:

    * Read "Kelo vs New London". It is the MODERN DAY "Negro Removal Project". Ginsberg voted in the AFFIRMATIVE. Thomas said NO - a private property owner cannot have his land taken by the government and given to ANOTHER PRIVATE OWNER.

    * Read the Texas Utilities Commission case in which the term "Disparate Impact" was made. They raised the standard for supervisor promotions. One needed a HIGH SCHOOL FREAKING DIPLOMA to be considered. Ginsberg said that it was RACIST because while 32% of the WHITE FOLKS had HS diplomas only 12% of the Blacks had theirs.

Here is what pisses me off about people like you: In your DISHONESTY you are unable to apply your real world standards that you have - absent the case and RETAIN THEM when RACE comes into play.

You are the one with the same old tired ideas; telling folks to pull up their boot straps without helping them to get strings, blaming the victims of this unjust system while ignoring the fact that they in fact have been victimized, calling out the violence of working folks and colored folks while being consistently silent about the violence of this government which officially and sometimes unoffcially kills folks everyday- they (sometime even kill folks dreams, pretend that the so-called market is really free rather than the dog eat dog system that it really is.

And NO I want sit down, as long as I have breath I will criticize this evil disguised as capitalism now in its latest stages better known as imperialism. I oppose it in the US and elsewhere. I oppose it for the reason you support it. I oppose any system that puts the needs of industry and capital, money and profit above the needs of human beings.

And I tell young people to finish school learn everything they can about the system they live under and always support policies and ideas that support the ability of human beings to be fully human. I also tell them to love God and their fellow man enough to do something to change this system or at least make a difference.

Unlike you Unconstructive or unreconstructed noise I have been on the front lines, both encouraging responsibility and accountability on the part of the system and our people.

You on the other hand from what I can assertain do little more than make money and support the inhumane practices of the corporate world and write on blogs like these where some folks are at least trying to put their ideas to work.

And don't be silly because we have not been successful at overturning the system at this moment doesn't mean that one day the people won't rise up and put in place a just government that would recognize everyones rights as human beings whether it be shelter, health care, the ability to eat or the right the work a job and bring home a livable wage.

I can't co-sign with you with reprimanding Field for not specifically mentioning the medical care in Haiti because I think his posting about Haiti is sufficient. And because my primary area is pathology and not surgery, I can't comment on the exact reasons for why medicine is being practiced the way it is in Haiti.

What I can say is that there's no way in hell the physicians there can possibly justify so many freakin' amputations!! There have been earthquakes worldwide and I can't recall one where the victims were subjected to such a drastic medical "solution"!! Obviously with a strong background in infectious diseases, I "get" the need to prevent sepsis via infection but damn, it appears that anyone with a broken limb is having that limb amputated. WTF!!!!!!!

This is 2010, not 120 years ago!! Other earthquake victims had anesthesia and antibiotics, whats so different about Haiti? And don't gimme that $hit about the government, other places had bad governments too! Given Haitian society, I'd imagine that a Haitian amputee is as good as dead eventually.

See, that's the problem and has always been the problem all throughout our history. When too many blacks were doing good, that's when all the BS starts such as the flood of negative remarks about blacks or any other nonwhite person. Paronoia sets in and whites began to think that a nonwhite person is going to get all the jobs or do better than them.

It is always tends to be leading in the direction of stuff like Jim Crow, Internment camps, Indian Reservations, a mass rounding up immigrants and shipping them back to their country , etc. In other words, it is a forerunner of things to come. History repeats itself.

As for Haiti, too many were buying vacation homes in the West Indies. Yup, they seem have taken a liken to those clear blue oceans and tropical scenery over there--Paradise. Even after the disaster had hit they had a boat cruise docked by the beach while the people from the cruises were enjoying the beach in Haiti.

    @Hathor/MeandMyMicroscope/IseeIsee --
I don't know the situation on the ground regarding medical care. Surely, some of it is that even prior to the quake the supplies and hospitals were a mess and docs can't scavenge for what they need.

I do remember reading one article entitled "Expect Gettysburg" and I said to myself "what the hell does that mean?" Later in the article, it explained that it was one Doc telling another Doc who was on the way that that was the conditions medical personnel were working with. I still thought it was a symbolic description until he went on to say they were literally having to amputate with nothing just to keep folks alive.

I'm not quite ready to say this is a black versus white response. Mainly because white Americans and Europeans have always been better -- in my opinion -- with dealing with foreigners whatever the color. I don't know why but it seems that way to me. A white conservative American will let a black American or a poor white American starve and/or die in the worst kinds of conditions while never lifting a hand to help but make that black person or white person a foreigner and they suddenly find generosity. I don't get it but I've seen it too many times to discount it.

Also, the way the US and Western Europe has allowed Eastern Europe to rot shows they don't care much for them either. Even when ethnic cleansing was going on Western Europe didn't care and the US only stepped in to do aerial bombings after the fact and the places still fell apart after the peace and some have returned to their communist hellhole status w/o the formal communism.

Unless a country has nukes, is threatening us, or has a trade resource we need then we don't care. We run to natural disasters to help but we ignore grinding poverty and horrible living conditions in much the same way that conservative ignore those things here at home.

In a way, our health care is the same way. If you're immediately dying of a heart attack our medical system will save you but if you're dying a long death from something like cancer then you're on your own to die -- no help here if you can't pony up the cash first.

It's a sick way of thinking and I think it permeates a lot of our decisions and actions as a nation.

@granny -- I try to avoid all cable and tv based news when it comes to disasters. I can't stand the pain or the exploitation of pain. Katrina was enough to cure me of watching newscasters so I try to use print/online sources instead.

With the aid sitting on the runway, you gotta wonder what's going through people's minds. Was that before or after the military finally showed up in force? To me, there's been far too much griping and sniping between nations involved in the help when they ought to just be doing. I am sincerely hoping that now that more people are in place things will go much more smoothly. I'm also hopeful (and I know some will think me naive) that we're really committed this time -- not just to rescue and cleanup but to really helping Haiti become the nation it has every potential and right to be.

Very few on this blog are genuinely concerned about this woman's intention. One thing that is pretty clear is that the majority of this blogs readers don't like ANY whites adopting black children. Especially, if the parents are educated and well-to-do, and can provide a good home. That is hated more than anything.

There is a level of bitterness that would prefer to see orphaned children live in poverty with a reduced lifespan, than to grow well-adjusted in a home with parents who are white. It is still a source of sore feelings when you have successful black folks like obama and others who have been raised by white people.

Isee Isee- whats really going on in Haiti or what went on is that the US government which BTW is not the same as you and I, arrived in Haiti to occupy it. They landed troops first and forced other countries to wait in the air, while they unloaded the considerable supplies the US Army brings along went it deployed. Some planes had to return to their origin because the US forced Haiti or Haiti's gov't laid down and signed an agreement to allow the US to run the airport.

Also notice the news blackout about other nations contributions esp. Cuba which was on the ground right away with doctors and a makeshift hospital.

As a result of the US hogging the airport for its occupation, badly needed supplies did not get to folks. Even CNN's Anderson Cooper was commenting on it. Folks knew that medical supplies including anesthesia was needed but the US Armed Forces blocked their ability to get there.

You guys are playing too much conspiratorial games with the amputees. The doctors didn't just go around cutting off limbs they amputated limbs to save folks who were going to die otherwise from the infection that would have resulting from some limbs simply hanging off or others badly damaged. The problem was that the medical supplies and equipment was unnescarilly delayed

The sin was in the delay and the sudden inability of the smartest folks in the world to organize something as simple as getting food to folks. Esp. when they have the most modern aircraft known to man. But they had another angle. And that was to make the people look like savages -look at how they all fight over the food, they are looting etc. This is so when they do their thing and start making decisions for Haitians and start brunoing the construction folks will say, 'well hell they can't take care of themselves, we might as well do it.'Most of this it turned out was lies. But the US gov't and some of the so-called helpers exacerbated the situation with their callous delays.

The US military stopped making flights - for 5 days --that's right brother Obama's government actually left suffering and dying Haitians -with injured Haitians to hospitals in Florida pretending that the governor said he wanted to be paid. The truth has since come out that the Army just cancelled the flights without any real reason.

The bottom line folks is that the US military is there to prevent a revolution by the common folks who want to take personal responsibility and take government into their own hands and thus end corruption and begin actually investing in education, healthcare, jobs and the well-being of the common man.

There are several blogs with info on Haiti that gives a more complete picture of whats really going on; blackagendareport.com, counterpunch.com, alternet.org, truthout.org among others

    ReplyDelete
  139. Cold Truth:

Nah, I don't mind whites adopting black children. But what I do mind is some whites taking advantage of Haiti's situation taking children under false pretenses, children being sold into slavery to the highest bidder.

BTW, have white adoption agencies ran out of children? Another thing is that the impression and attitude that only if black children are raised in white homes will they somehow grow up to be well-adjusted is an insult. There are many blacks capable of that as well. If it wasn't there wouldn't be Doctors, teachers, engineers, politicians, lawyers, etc., who are also black.

Now, like I said I don't mind whites adopting black children but I would like to think that it is because they LOVE children no matter what and its not just some type of experiment to see if a black child is raised in a white home with white parents that they will somehow turn out like the President. Granny saw the US Military (and Coast Guard) Helicopters coming to rescue the AFRICANS who where STOLEN AWAY from their continent 200 years ago. UNCON- no matter how you try to describe it you are still advancing the love it or leave it argument.

You are reaching I truly know myself which is why I do what I do. I am no allusions or illusions that folks are going to see things my way but I am clear about what needs to change.

To be fair to you you would have no way of knowing that I live a simple lifestyle and have for some time now. I have worked working class jobs and as journalist the point is none have paid very well. I couldn't afford a cruise and have never taken one.

In other words I am not materialistic so all the exploiting going on is not for me trust me. I take the bus everywhere.

I am not in envy of you nor do do I envy anything you have or have attained. I just think that everybody else should benefit at least enough from the system to get their basic needs met and fail to understand why you that things as they are, are either okay or just needs more conservatism.

And to your other point I am an American citizen therefore I am accorded the rights to criticize. The preamble of the Constitution of the US gives me that right. I am sure you have read it! And beyond that I am a preacher of the gospel and unlike many of my ilk I answer to a higher power that requires justice, mercy and walking humbly with God. And thus that gives me a right an obligation to call evil, evil.

    It's a shame that black

....folks --at least some black folks--have gotten so sophisticated that the same system that less than 50 years ago; denied us the right to vote and relegated us to second class citizenship - inadequate educational opportunities, bank redlining, higher and rip-off life insurance policies, paying more for less, police brutality, Moynihan even said we had a cultural deficiency even racist violence-- is now just cool with us.

Unreconstructed Noise- would have only been allowed in his company to shines shoes or clean floors. Now all of a sudden their still biased and worker ripping off butts are just good enough to kiss.

  151. Mellaneous,
The reason for the Army's incompetence, is because its the Army. Ever heard the expression "Hurry up and wait." I think it first appeared during WWII.

There had been a comment on another of FN's post, that the Navy has been better at humanitarian missions and has had more experience.

You ever watched a stone chiseler and how they hammer away at a rock a little at a time in order to refine it and make it into a sculpture...a work of art?

Well, you remind me of a stone chiseler hammering away at those falsehoods, deception, and lies in order for the work of art, which is truth to shine through. I truly enjoy your post and feel the Spirit in them every time.

    Thanks Granny appreciate the compliment.

Hathor- It would be nice to think it was just plain ole incompetence. Its good to read newspapers from Europe and other areas because they sometimes reveal the facts that we don't get here.

Trust me it was not incompetence that took the Army and rest of the armed forces to get their stuff together.

I am sure you have heard the story about one animal-your choice- asking another animal known for its cunning and treachery for a rid across a river. The rider made his ride promise not to bite or sting him and his ride obliged. ONly when they got half way across the snake, scorpion (your choice) bit or stung his/her rider and when the rider asked why he had stung or bit him/her. The rides reply was you knew what I was when you asked for the ride.

In other words, these guys have only one purpose and they want you and me to believe that its something else, like humanitarian. Thats the trick. They are there to occupy the country and prevent revolution.

If you really believe that the US gov't (there is a difference between the govt and the people) is just there for humanitarian reasons just stay tuned.

  154. BTW, Michelle Obama was raised by some black parents and guess what, she is the FIRST LADY. Oprah Winfrey was raised by some black parents and guess what she is a billionaire and both of those women are WELL-ADJUSTED! I can name some more WELL-ADJUSTED black successful Black folks.

Oh yeah, I don't want to leave out Dr. Ben Carson who was raised in a black single parent home whose mother only had a third grade education. He was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins since 1984. He is a professor of neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oncology, and pediatrics. He was also the co-director of Craniofacial Center at John Hopkins. His practice included traumatic brain injuries, brain and spinal cord tumors, achondroplasia, neurological and congential disorders, craniosynostosis, epilepsy, and trigeminal neuralgia. He has written more than 90 neurosurgical publications and been awarded 24 honorary degrees and dozens of national citations of merit. To top it off, he is the author of three best selling books. Now, how is that for a WELL-ADJUSTED home?

My goal is to get you to LINK your macro-consciousness together.

Indeed this is the SAME SYSTEM that has enslaved us. WHY THEN would you allow this SYSTEM to inject an unknown pharmacological substance into your body per the "Universal Health Care" that you demand from this beast?

Not only must you TRUST that it won't try to KILL YOU AGAIN, but as you yield your community competency toward providing medical care to your people within - LEVERAGING the academic institutions that you now control to develop these human resources to serve this role.

How is it, Mellaneous, that the same Democratic Party corporation which is the partner in oppression in every single stage of Black American history where we were treated as "3/5ths" of a man, up until 1964. How is it that you have LONG MEMORY of this country's past corporate deeds but the Democratic Party has been purged clean of its past and is now the "Protective Womb" of the Negro?

I am NOT advancing "Love It Or Leave It".

I AM asking you to reconcile your RELATIONSHIP to your abuser. The more you expose yourself to him - the more vulnerable you are to him when he gets drunk with power and goes on a rampage against him.

I am merely taking inventory of the backup plan and plan for separation from your primary antagonist.

  159. to all of you who called me a cunt, and retarded, and stupid, and think i need to be schooled: FUCK YOU.

you attack me when i show some of you to be wrong, instead of trying to proof you were right. i am more than willing to admit when i am wrong on facts and to change my opinion and perspective with your help. and i have.

all i was saying earlier on were FACTS and dismissing the notion that "most" white people wouldn't be objecting to the "missionaries" taking kids in haiti.

some of you absolutely do believe white people are responsible for all that is wrong in the world, and especially in the black person's world--and in that respect i agree with CF.

some of you also like to throw out pure provocative opinionated slams at white people--especially fly--and think that no one should challenge you on it.

fuck that. you are not above reproach and neither am am i on FACTS or generalizations. someone says something here everyone has the right to say what do you mean by that, tell me more. cowards deflect and launch personal attacks.

i have never said all whites were great people or saviors or that i am either.

for the record, i am not stupid, racist or a cunt. i do not have a fat ass either--i run on average 12 miles a week and it is quite nice, round, high and firm--thank you very much.

i have come here and listened and responded respectfully and asked questions, and given answers. i try to provide information and facts. i believe in productive dialogue. i am a doer and a thinker and not afraid to debate.

Good for you, Maria. i hope you know those who calling you names are assholes themselves. degrading others is how they make their insecure egos bigger. it's not just you, they do it to other Blacks too-if you haven't noticed.

but there are 'some' blacks on this blog who would not lower themselves to such filthy words. honestly, those who said those words to you only 'diminish' themselves.

CF, "I AM asking you to reconcile your RELATIONSHIP to your abuser. The more you expose yourself to him - the more vulnerable you are to him when he gets drunk with power and goes on a rampage against him.

I am merely taking inventory of the backup plan and plan for separation from your primary antagonist."

An excellent observation. Blacks have never reconciled their RELATIONSHIP to the man. They complain and find fault, but do nothing about it. It's almost like the days of slavery where slaves hoped the master would come to his senses and treat them as equal human beings.

Now that Blacks have the potential to be powerful, it's as though they are afraid of harnessing that power within their community. Like Mellaneous, they would rather "hope" that their complaining will magically transform the white man into the kind of person they want.

To hope that the white man will change, rather than take action to harness the power of Blacks within the black community, is to sign a death warrant for the BC. Blacks 'must' change their 'powerless' passive mode of thinking to a dynamic powerful way of thinking...if they are to survive as a race.

Not exactly purged and definitely not the "protective womb" of black folks.

However the modern Democratic party has embraced diversity and participation, recognized the need for as well as supporting policies toward the advancement of people of color.

The GOP has done none of that.

Instead the only black support the GOP welcomes is racist apologists such as yourself.

Imagine what would have happened if, after Hurricane Katrina, Haitian Voodoo Priests prowled New Orleans, snatched random children off the streets and smuggled them out to Mexico.

Even if the Baptists are not doing to harvest organs or child slavery, Child-snatching-for-Jesus is not acceptable..

At least one person here asked why Americans adopt from abroad in the first place. I'll answer at a personal level as someone who adopted a child from Asia. Domestic adoptions nowadays are exceptionally difficult and take many years if one wants to adopt an infant. Yes, I do know that there are a lot of kids in state custody who are available for adoption. These kids are in state custody for a reason--most commonly a long history of parental abuse. I truly admire anyone who adopts kids with such a history. My spouse and I considered doing that, and even went through several months of classes for people considering such adoptions, but in the end we decided we were not up to the task.

Child-snatching, child trafficking, all that stuff is bad news, of course. But please don't criticize folks who decide on foreign adoption without pondering all the details.
