Field blotter.

This is my field blotter post. A couple of stories tonight have me scratching my head and seeing red at the same time.

The first one comes from New York:

"Timothy West, 26, was cleared of four charges that he entered an Ozone Park home in 2009 through a window and raped and robbed a 21-year-old waitress at knifepoint in her bed.

One juror said the panel believed the victim must have known West, and that she let him into her home.

West has a history of break-ins and was on parole for robbery when arrested, but the jury did not hear that evidence: Buchter ruled it could prejudice the jury against him. "

Huh? Let me read that again......nope, that wasn't a misprint. Just wow! [Story]

The second story comes from Jacksonville, Florida:

"A 22-year-old mother in Jacksonville, FL, just pleaded guilty to second degree murder after killing her young son. The child, three-months old, was shaken to death because the mother had become angry that his crying interrupted her game of Farmville on Facebook.

The mother, Alexandria Tobias, faces up to 25 years in prison."

There seems to be a trend here. We should give out baby making license like we do driver's license here in A-merry-ca. [Story]

Of course we can't leave out those wonderful college kids:

"Police say a Penn State fan dressed in a blue and yellow Halloween costume was assaulted by four unknown fans at Beaver Stadium who mistook him for a Michigan fan.

The Centre Daily Times reports that the assault happened Saturday, the night the Nittany Lions defeated the rival Wolverines 41-31.

Police say the men attacked the fan because they thought the colors of his costume indicated he was a Michigan fan. Michigan's colors are blue and yellow.

The attackers have not been identified.

Police say the victim sustained a possible broken nose and was treated and released from a hospital."

Why are we so angry A-merry-ca? Even the young and educated among us. [Story]

And then, of course; there are the not so young and not so educated. They have some issues as well:

"Wendy Edmond Green, 41, is being held without bond in the Wake County Jail on charges of first-degree murder in the death of her live-in boyfriend, 52-year-old David Reuben Green Jr.

Wake County Sheriff's Office
Police in North Carolina charged Wendy Edmond Green, 41, with first-degree murder after officers found her boyfriend's body stuffed in a freezer in their home.
Investigators had been looking for David Green since early September, when family members reported him missing. On Sept. 7, authorities conducted a search of the couple's Raleigh home but were unable to locate him, Wake County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens said.

"They continued to investigate, and went back out there [Wednesday] to do another search," Stephens told AOL News. "[Investigators] were looking around, and they saw a freezer. They opened [it up], and there he was."

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison told The News & Observer that investigators detected a "powerful smell" during their second search of the home. The power inside the home had been shut off in August."

And please, no cracks about interracial relationships. This could have happened to anybody. [Story]

Finally, if we are talking about crime, we can't leave out my hometown:

"PHILADELPHIA - A 15-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded early today during a dispute inside a bar in North Philadelphia, police said.

Police said the youth got into an argument with a young man about 2:30 a.m. inside the El Callejon II bar at North Second Street and West Indiana Avenue in the Fairhill section.

The older male grabbed the victim by the shirt and shot him once in the chest, police said. The gunman fled as bar patrons scattered.

Someone drove the wounded teen to his home and police were called there, officials said.

The youth was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

The nature of the argument and what the boy was doing in the bar at that hour are not yet known. "

I repeat: We should give out baby making license here in A-merry-ca. [Story]

    Field,

Sometimes I shake my head and think maybe 12-21-12 couldn't come soon enough. Blow it up and start all over.
Seriously though one of the problems with our criminal system are the judges. They make crazy decisions and are never held accountable. Now in the case you cited, if the West does this again and kills someone, there's no consquence for the judge who made this stupid ruling.

I recall one of the female resident IDs on this blog claimed that there was no proof that shaking a baby is injurious to the child.

Can anyone recall who made that dumb insensitive statement? Field is right. They should require a license to have children.

Whoever said it should not have children.

I'm pretty sure it was Mack Lyons. She a Transvestite and doesnt think very clearly (has a spotted dick - Michael Jackson Disease) so be gentle. Come to think of it, he does hang out with little boys too. He said he was going shopping at wal mart cause he heard little boys pants were half-off.

  5. Mr. Field, here is another one. A 3 year-old girl was shot on her way home from trick-or-treating with her grandfather who was also shot.

Police think it was a gang related shooting but the grandfather and the girl were not the intended targets. No one has been arrested.

I seem to recall that discussion. I am not sure who it was, but I 'think' it was Maria who claimed there was no scientific proof that shaking a baby was injurious to it.

I am not sure about this either but I think AB and LAA lit into her for saying it.

If you find out that I am right, please honor what Field has requested..

Hey, it is dangerous out there and on Halloween it is even more so.

    from the Los Angeles Times:

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/11/halloween-shooting-boy-shot-south-los-angeles.html

Only in America could things like this happen.

  12. FN,
Can we please have some upbeat posts?

Just for a day or two I would like to leave the bad news, the insanity, the anger to be peddled by the LSM.

There are so many good things going on, can we honor that?

I was working at a college fun race in the District on the weekend, and had the opportunity to meet so many nice young adults, who are intelligent, engaged, and concerned about their futures.

    It was refreshing.

I know that the "Killadelphia" count is important, and we also need to celebrate all the truly positive and wonderful things going on.

Its kinda like when the DH was in Iraq. Everyone focused on how many combat deaths every day, I focused on how many were safe, and all the good they were doing. It wasn't their choice to be sent there, many didn't agree with the war, but they decided to make lemons out of lemonade.

That's how I'm feeling right now.

    Word verification: intent (!)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anon at 11:04
No, it doesn't happen only in America. Much worse happens around the world every hour of every day.

My DH was embedded with the 1st Iraqi Division for an entire year, and in part, had to investigate suspected war crimes.

Bashing is the cheap and easy answer, and I'm tired of it.

Bashing men, and in particular, black men, has reached almost a varsity level sport in this country.

I want it to end. I'm so tired of standing by and listening to it.

There are good men and bad men, just as there are good people and bad people where ever you go in the world. Read the Bible, even if you're not a Christian, because they figured out human behavior a loooong time ago and wrote parables and solutions to guide us and teach us, as did many other sacred texts. Nothing is new in the world in the realm of the human experience. Jealousy. Greed. Lust. Envy. et al.

    (gets off soapbox).

    Hugs to you, FN.

Understand ... I am NOT a Republican, although our entire family did work this campaign for the (R) candidate to2012 defeat the incumbent D. The polls look to be trending to the R.

However, we made NO secret of the fact that if the R does win and becomes a corporatist shill who continues to sell out average Americans, we will be looking for a new "employee" come
    2012.

I had a very uplifting back-and-forth debate with some young grad students in the District this weekend. This young people VOLUNTARILY stayed around to engage in economic debate for over
2 hrs with me! They "get" it, they are worried, and they aren't buying what either mainstream party is "selling" ... so there is hope! Such a great group of thoughtful, respectful and intellectual young people who are questioning the status quo. Yay!!!

    2) I always thought a perfect punishment for these folk would be to strap them to a shaking machine and shake the living shit out of them. Make them feel what the baby felt. Cruel and unusual, but many of the most effective punishments are.

    3) Sad. You can't even trick-or-treat without getting jumped on.

  35. i said that shaken baby syndrome was a controversial designation that medical doctors believed was invalid and that deaths were not based on shaking but based on head trauma or other injuries. i said this based on many years of my own medical reporting on this issue.

this case proves my point. the woman also said the baby's head hit the computer and fell on the floor! yet the media grabs on to "shaken to death," when that's not accurate. fact is she ADMITTED to abuse and often the cases don't start off that way. it's often the parents accusing the baby sitter or nanny, who doesn't have the resources to fight back.

let me again say for those who don't read details: the case of the farmville moron OBVIOUSLY was murder because she admitted it and the kid hit his head. shaking alone wasn't the cause.
often it's a head injury that occurred sometime before or even during birth.

    http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2010-10-29/story/more-information-jacksonville-woman-who-shook-baby-interrupting

and as far as anyone who said that not being fit to be a parent? bullshit. i am not condoning child abuse or corporal punishment.

i never hit or shook my kids but i do believe in provable FACTS and the fact is that at least half the cases where zealous prosecutors and physicians without the right expertise have convicted innocent parents, whose cases are later reversed.

if you think it's ok to convict innocent people based on flimsy scientific suggestions, than your view of the criminal justice system in america is different from mine.

    i prefer mine.

let's hope you're never falsely accused of anything.

    http://www.jpands.org/vol10no2/yazbak.pdf

'Testimony by pathologists about autopsy results can help condemn innocent persons to life imprisonment or even death. The autopsy table is accepted as the altar of truth by physicians and courts alike. Yet, as this case shows, medical examiners are fallible,
and autopsy reports must always be analyzed critically."

here's a case from just two weeks ago--a conviction reversed.

    http://detnews.com/article/20101016/METRO03/10160368/Woman-acquitted-after-second-trial-on-child-abuse-charges

The case was based on circumstantial evidence, there were no eyewitnesses, and the time of the alleged abuse couldn't be pinpointed.

Marlinga, a former Macomb County prosecutor, expects the verdict will impact allegations of shaken baby abuse nationwide.

"We now have a cautionary flag for police, prosecutors and physicians to consider VST (venous sinus thrombosis)," he said.

What up Field I am with Karen on this one? It would be nice to find an upbeat post, but it is what it is. In Minneapolis they are seriously considering closing the only high school on the predominantly black side of town. It would be a blow for folks who don't have much to celebrate anyway. The school incidentally was very good in basketball and won a few state championships. Khalid El Amin graduated from the place as well as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of Flyte Tyme productions fame.

The positive is that the community is actually trying to embrace the school through offers of mentoring and tutoring and is committed to working with the school board to do what it takes to bring the students back, who left for a variety of reasons. And ironically the majority of the students are not the usual failing students but includes a lot of high achievers, though the school board (led by a black superintendent) has tried to paint them that way.

Karen Amen and kudos for your point about men and black men bashing.

Field I was going to throw in the crimes that are being committed in the name of the American people almost daily, like the so-called collateral damage being caused by the drones, and the damage caused by US policies in Africa and other Third World countries, but I thought you would probably ignore it.

But a brother does have a point even if its not the most popular criminality to point out.

As a lesbian, the abuse I suffer is intensified. In a world that hates "dykes" almost as much as it hates "niggers" and "bitches", my life is a trilogy of terror. Just as no sister can separate her African soul from her female soul, my lesbian soul is equally inseparable from my person and my politics. As Jill is a two-fer, I am a three-fer.

I refuse to fight with Black men for my space at the bottom of the world. While sisters cry "Let's heal OUR wounds brother!", too many brothers cry "MY wound is BIGGER than yours sister!!!" It is a phallic mantra that rapes our collective revolution. (It is very similar to the homophobic cry that racist/gaybashing blacks aim at activist homosexuals: "OUR discrimination is BIGGER than yours, fag/dyke!!!")

Gender does not protect us from racism. Sexism doubles our burden. Brothers who are oppressed because of their skin oppress us because of our sex organs. We will NOT be silent as such fascist fallout trickles down upon us!

Macho misogynists love to whine about Black women being more employed. While they ignore our lower wages for superior work. They whine about the smaller populations of Black men on college campuses, while they ignore sexist professors who give superior grades/degrees to illiterate jocks like O. J. Simpson. Likewise, they ignore the rapid increase of campus date rapes, from fraternity houses to dormitories. They whine about Black men in prison, as they ignore the droves of Black women in IDENTICAL cages, giving birth in chains to wards of states, fathered by men who never visit them.

Not only have you suggested black women pursue non-black men or other black women but you also claim that black men want you to believe that white men are your enemies when it is actually black men whoi are the enemies of black women.

    i did not post that
    but

it is truly tragic that nclb and gwb and hobama and his charter corp cronies have brutally destroyed public schools by design...but indeed they have

it is tragic that public ed has become horridly broken...and all that is broken is eventually trashed...shame!

When it comes to the public schools, the Obama administration is allied with the most rapacious sectors of Wall Street and far-right foundations. That political reality is most evident in the administration's campaign to establish a parallel national network of charter schools, with a heavy emphasis on inner cities. Obama and his education chief, Arne Duncan, have spent their first year and a half in office coercing states to expand charters or lose out on more than $4 billion in federal education moneys. Obama's allies on Wall Street invest heavily in charter schools, tapping into the public money stream to build their own vision of corporate education
Wall Street finds charters especially attractive, since bankers and hedge funds can exercise extraordinary influence on the schools while the public pays most of the tab. And profiteers have found numerous ways to turn charter schools into cash cows, where taxpayers finance private contracts over which the public has no control. Charter schools are a low-risk, fast buck dream, tailor-made for corporate exploitation and political manipulation.
RIch foundations have banded together to amass a mountain of money to ensure that charter schools have sources of funds that most public schools lack, plus a steady income from the taxpayers.

When you think of it, $65 million is a cheap price to pay for the foundations to control, not only the DC public schools, but the entire political process of the nation's capital city. If the voters get rid of Mayor Fenty, they can kiss the fat cats' money goodbye.
Actually, that's no more outrageous than President Obama making states jump through charter school hoops to get a piece of his $4 billion "Race to the Top" prize. Obama is also a bully and an extortionist, in league with the Wal-Mart family's foundation and the bankers and hedge funds on Wall Street.

  90. lm would be MORE depressed today
as blacks in chi are suffering MUCH more poverty and segregation and racism in 2010 than they ever did in 1984...

just as in all of america
    especially public schools

Schools in the United States are more segregated today than they have been in more than four decades. Millions of non-white students are locked into “dropout factory” high schools, where huge percentages do not graduate, and few are well prepared for college or a future in the US economy.

According to a new Civil Rights report published at the University of California, Los Angeles, schools in the US are 44 percent non-white, and minorities are rapidly emerging as the majority of public school students in the US. Latinos and blacks, the two largest minority groups, attend schools more segregated today than during the civil rights movement forty years ago. In Latino and African American populations, two of every five students attend intensely segregated schools. For Latinos this increase in segregation reflects growing residential segregation. For blacks a significant part of the reversal reflects the ending of desegregation plans in public schools throughout the nation. In the 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, the US Supreme Court concluded that the Southern standard of “separate but equal” was “inherently unequal,” and did “irreversible” harm to black students. It later extended that ruling to Latinos.

AB, "McClain, then an editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune, was describing her reactions to the 1983 mayoral race in which Harold Washington emerged as Chicago’s first black mayor. In response to Washington’s victory—just as in the more recent case of a Chicago politician elected “the first”—euphoria had swept over the city as it made history. Initially.

It wasn’t long, though, before embittered white Chicagoans started a racial backlash. In the Washington Post essay, McClain voiced her reaction to the swift and sudden fall from kumbaya: “So many whites unconsciously had never considered that blacks could do much of anything, least of all get a black candidate this close to being mayor of Chicago,” she wrote. “My colleagues looked up and realized, perhaps for the first time, that I was one of ‘them.’ I was suddenly threatening.”

She continued: “Bitter am I? That is mild. This affair has cemented my journalist’s acquired cynicism, robbing me of most of my innate black hope for true integration. It has made me sparkle as I reveled in the comradeship of blackness. It has banished me to nightmarish bouts of sullenness.”"

from the article you provided...i was in Chi when Harold was elected and rememeber the euphoria and the racist backlash. It was horrible, yet Harold handled it like a great warrior.

There is similarity today with Obama and the white backlash toward him. Yet, Harold stood proudly as a bm, and said so. He did not, and could not, abandon the folks who put him in office. And like today there were those Whites who stood with him. Streeterville, Gold Coast, and the Near North was where they lived and I lived among them.

It was the best of times and the worst of times. Yet today, it seems much worse on a National scale.

Thank you for the link and the article about her. I think every Black who is awake, can relate to that undercurrent of melancholy Leanita Mcclain felt. I too was never the same after Harold Washington. I regret that he didn't live longer. He WAS a great man, and a highly skilled politician...Chicago style!

  98. I remember reading an article by Leanita McClain called "How Chicago taught me to hate whites" back in 1983 after the ugly mayoral election which Harold Washington ultimately won.

McClain exquisitely detailed how the ugly racism displayed by Chicago's white citizens toward the first serious black mayoral candidate after DECADES of black support for white candidates caused her to lose her idealism and yes, indeed, hate.

It was beautifully written, pain-filled, brilliant and ultimately tragic because she committed suicide shortly thereafter.

    May God rest her soul.
