Before I get into this post, I want to acknowledge the blogger, African American Pundit, and thank him for the wonderful work that he has been doing with the Recy Taylor story. I reached out to a few bloggers about the injustice this woman suffered many years ago, but so far Rock is the only one to really get on board. I hope that some of you other bloggers of color will look into her story and leave posts on your sites as well.
So it's President's Day here in A-merry-ca, and although white folks love to cast Negroes as Presidents, -----from Eddie Murphy to Blair Underwood--- we have only had one real black President in these divided states. (Well, a half one at least.) And, because he has been the first, he has been getting a lot of (unfair) pressure from you black folks to deliver. Like Janet Jackson, you want to know what he has done for you lately. Well, I have no problem telling you Negroes that he has done as much for you as he could. He is, after all, the President of all A-merry-cans. You Negroes can only get so much.
His O-ness is facing a very troubled world, and here on the home front the opposition party is over- reaching. They are trying to break unions in Wisconsin, and threatening to shut down the government if they don't get their way. It's not easy being president of these divided states. No wonder the poor guy gets a Day.
Finally, no matter how my girl Beyonce tries to go....ahem, white , it seems that there are still some folks who just won't let her forget that her ass is black. Yes Beyonce, you might as well just embrace your blackness. Just think, if you do, you might get a chance to play the president one day in a movie.
Yeah so Libya is getting supercrazy as Qaddafi has unleashed hell upon his own populace. Snipers, choppers, and battleships have all killed protesters. People have been crushed in their car by tanks, women and children have jumped off of bridges to escape gunfire. Sub-Saharan African mercenaries are being flown in so they can indiscriminately fire into crowds.

No offense Field but POTUS will not be getting my vote in '12 if he can't at least make a statement about Oscar Grant and similar situations. He spoke up for his crony Skip Gates and instead of sticking to his guns (since the officer in question falsified the police report) he caved and had that ridiculous beer summit. A foray to Oakland, Harlem or Brooklyn to make that "Responsibility" speech he gave over and over to our community in '08 is not gonna fly in '12. Furthermore everyone is screaming about cutting NPR/PBS what about cutting emergency heat assistance to the poor? Obama did that not the Rethugs.

ReplyDeleteI think many of us black folks haven't been hard on the President. We've been silent and supportive for the first 18 mos. and observed him surrounding himself with the same folks that caused the mess he inherited. He's still doing it. No excuses for him. Will more than likely vote him in if he runs in 2012 because the alternative would be unthinkable. 2008 election was noteworthy for me because for once in my 6 decades on this earth I didn't have to choose between worse and far worse. Can't say the same for 2012! However, as I've written to you in the past about this issue; he should extend olive branches and be as conciliatory to the progressives as he is to his detractors. BTW.. they want him out and they are making no bones about it. We just want him to make an effort to fight for some of the principles he bandied about during his campaign.

Obama spray-painted a disconnected future while harkening back to the days of Cold War hysteria, in order to somehow explain why he won't spend any money on anything but banks and war. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. I think that it’s quite telling that he would give personal responsibility speeches to black people, but not a lot of personal responsibility speeches to Wall Street in terms of execution. And when you actually look at the degree to which issues of accountability for poor people—but where’s the accountability when you’re bailing out these Wall Street elites, $700 billion? That’s socialism for the rich. That’s your policy. Don’t then go to these folk who are locked into dilapidated housing, decrepit school systems, many on their way to a prison-industrial complex, and talk about their fathers didn’t come through. And we know the fathers got problems. We understand that. But there are structural institutional challenges that he’s not hitting, hitting head on.
And I should say this, too, I think, in terms of style, that the Obama administration is obsessed with the wrong Lincoln. They are obsessed with the Lincoln who they think moved to the right and was trying to create bipartisan consensus with conservatives, whereas we know there’s no Lincoln without Frederick Douglass. There’s no Lincoln without Harriet Beecher Stowe. There’s no Lincoln without Wendell Phillips or Charles Sumner. That was a social movement.
Lincoln supported the slave trade when he was in the House. He supported the Fugitive Slave Act. In the first inaugural lecture he gave, he supported the first proposed Thirteenth Amendment, which said there would be slavery forever in America, the unamendable amendment. That was Lincoln. If it were not for the abolitionist movement, the courageous black and white freedom fighters, from John Brown to Douglass, who put pressure on Lincoln, we would have been dealing with a white supremacist Lincoln.
Lincoln became great, because a social movement pushed him against slavery in that regard. And Obama is looking to the wrong Lincoln. And if he doesn’t understand the greatness of Lincoln was responding to the social movements of working people and poor people, he’s going to end up with a failed presidency, with a lot of symbolic gestures, but, on the ground, everyday people, those Sly Stone called “everyday people,” suffering still.

For the time being, black America remains in a delusional state, with African Americans expressing more confidence in and satisfaction with the direction of the nation and its economy than whites, while the gap between white and black employment, wealth, and rates of incarceration are at near record levels. Black support for the president remains strong, though not at the record levels experienced in 2008. Till things change, this appearance of overwhelming black support is an impenetrable wall around President Obama, insulating him from any effective challenge from his left.
