The Iowa Three.

Man it's nice to be home. It's been a long holiday.

So anyway, I am watching the election results come in from Iowa, and CNN is saying that it's going to be close between three candidates. (Poor Newt and Michele.) So far the turnout has been lower than expected. Hmm, I wonder what that means?

There is Soledad O'Brien. Poor thing, she is trying so hard to look comfortable in the land of corn. (She"tussled" with Michele Bachmann on her show.) Soledad claims her black side, but she might want to hold back a little on that until she leaves Iowa.

Thanks to one of the candidates, folks in corn country might start giving her the fuzzy eye ball because they think she wants a handout.

"Rick Santorum was responding to a question Sunday about how he would get the country back on track, and he was telling a group of Iowans that President Obama wanted to make them more dependent on programs like Medicaid.
There was little or no reaction from an audience that appeared to be all, or overwhelmingly, white. And perhaps as a result, Santorum continued with this gem of scapegoating:

'“I don’t want to make black peoples’ lives better by giving them somebody else’s money,” Mr. Santorum said. “I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and for their families.”'

Now that's special. A guy who stole money from the people of Pistolvania is lecturing a race of people about handouts.

"Asked about it later, Santorum told Sean Hannity on Fox News: said: “I haven’t heard it; all I can say is that I don’t single out any group of people– that’s one thing I don’t do,” Santorum explained. “I don’t divide people by group and race and class.”  [Source]

And people wonder why I say that Rick is crazy. Rick, are you saying that you didn't hear what you said? "I haven't heard it"? Yes, I think that's what you are saying.

Folks, I rest my case.

This just in: Santorum is leading with 49% of the votes counted. Hang in there folks, it could be a long night.

The overcoverage of Iowa has become sickening. It’s all the news media are talking about. It’s no exaggeration to say that politics—or, more precisely, the frenzied anticipation of election results before the election has occurred—has become a kind of modern religion, manically filling the cosmos with its polls and predictions. In the old Hegelianism, leftist intellectuals constructed a secular substitute for transcendence by foretelling the unfolding shape of the Spirit in History. In our pop Hegelianism, the mass media construct a secular substitute for transcendence by predicting the winner of the Iowa caucuses. In both cases, men seek, though the act of pretended intellectual control over the world, to replace the psychological function once fulfilled by their relationship with God.

Andrea Mitchell thinks Iowa is too white: “The rap on Iowa – it doesn’t represent the rest of the country. [It’s] too white, too evangelical, too rural.”

Cause everbody knows white Christian America is illegitimate.

Iowa is a strange state with strange demographics. Race doesn't play much in Iowa because Iowa is so white they can't tell when it's snowing.

Iowa's demos are mostly defined by industrial sectors - military, agro, a couple of others, and they split the state up into these oddly disparate yet few economic interests.

At this time, while most of the rest of the country isn't doing very well, Iowa is experiencing pretty good economic times. There is no discernible cause for their success that would translate for most other states, but as well there is little reason for Iowans to alter the status quo. Hence the low turnout.

    Interesting caucus...

    ------------

You have answered your own question, Mr. McJones.

And at first glance there is something to the criticism of Iowa as racially unrepresentative of the US. According to the US Census Bureau, Iowa is 91.3 percent white. The US as a whole is 72.4 percent white. Iowa’s population is 2.9 percent black, as opposed to 12.6 percent for the US as a whole. Latinos make up 5 percent of the state versus 16.3 percent of the US.

The United States of America once looked like Iowa (the state is 91 percent white; in 1964, America was 90 percent white).

In 1964, the whole country was doing pretty well. Now, not so much, especially in places like Detroit.

The good news for the national media who fret that Iowa is 'too white' is that eventually that will "change" too, and they will be representative enough, both demographically and economically, to legitimately pick presidential candidates.

I see 2012 is going to be just like 2011. Mr. Field, Rick Santorum is an honorable man. He is not a racist so stop trying to paint him as racist.

Obama lectured us Blacks and told us to stop complaining. Basically, he told us to go to hell. Why haven't you FN Negroes labelled Obama as a racist?

FYI: Soledad does NOT claim to be Black. She did a special once about Blacks but that was merely a stepping stone to something better...her white side...

  10. Field of Dreams, your flagrant disregard for standards of quotation aside, I think I made it pretty clear to any reasonable reader I thought the Iowa republican caucus was divided more by industrial sector than any other interest. That was my whole point.

In times past, states like Iowa have not fared so well, yet their demographics have been the same for a long time. Big states with more diversity, have had economic success far beyond what Iowa could ever hope to achieve. It's just geography. The big states have more interests at play, and therefore more complications. And you can't just simplify it. You have to adapt.

It's two different world's. Iowa is not very much like America these days. Should it be? I don't know.

I wonder how many Republican candidates have spent the last two weeks suggested that subsidy be removed in their eternal quest for 'small government'?

US Closes 2011 With Record $15.22 Trillion In Debt, Officially At 100.3% Debt/GDP, $14 Billion From Breaching Debt Ceiling

While not news to Zero Hedge readers who knew about the final debt settlement of US debt about 10 days ahead of schedule, it is now official: according to the US Treasury, America has closed the books on 2011 with debt at an all time record $15,222,940,045,451.09. And, as was observed here first in all of the press, US debt to GDP is now officially over 100%, or 100.3% to be specific, a fact which the US government decided to delay exposing until the very end of the calendar year. We wonder, rhetorically, just how prominent of a talking point this historic event will be in any upcoming GOP primary debates. And yes, technically this number is greater than the debt ceiling but it excludes various accounting gimmicks. When accounting for those, the US has a debt ceiling buffer of... $14 billion, or one third the size of a typical bond auction.

Iowa is a strange state with strange demographics.

As if there is the state in which the perfect balance of humanity lives.

Here in NY City -- in Brooklyn -- the entire world is represented. If any place in the country has "strange" demographics, it's Brooklyn, with 2.5 million residents, which probably means there's as many people here as there are in the state of Iowa. Certainly NY City -- with 8.5 million -- is far larger than the Hawkeye state.

Race doesn't play much in Iowa because Iowa is so white they can't tell when it's snowing.

Really? Race doesn't play much? Race is the defining element of Iowa's relative well being. White, as you know.

Iowa students, as a group, routinely score well above kids in other states on all exams -- SAT, ACT, etc -- and college attendance is high.

Several founders of the semi-conductor industry came from Iowa, as have a long list highly successful creative people.

Iowa's demos are mostly defined by industrial sectors - military, agro, a couple of others, and they split the state up into these oddly disparate yet few economic interests.

It's smart to diversify an economy, though you suggest it's not.

Meanwhile, you forgot education. The state has some terrific colleges and universities, not to mention the Iowa Writers Workshop.

Unfortunately, the rest of the nation cannot be more like Iowa. If it were, the nation would be in better shape.

As if it would matter if his pledge were enacted. This is grandstanding - as it is when others speak about reversing Roe v Wade.

Doesn't matter because on these issues the states are empowered to permit whatever they want. Thus, there's no possibility that access to birth control or abortion would end.

No need to wonder any longer

Mr. Paul marches straight into Iowa and tells corn farmers that the days of free money from taxpayers is over. Sell all the ethanol you want, he tells them, but you’ll have to pay your own bills.

And how does Iowa respond? Rather than running Mr. Paul out of town at the end of pitchforks, the Hawkeyes instead have embraced the budget cutter’s candidacy. Iowans, like Nebraskans, are smart enough to know that if you allow the government to shove a dollar in one pocket, they’ll swipe two out of another.

Political candidates, in the GOP presidential field and elsewhere, would be wise to take note: Voters will reward courage. And voters should take note: If politicians won’t be courageous, we must.

Now do you think we will see this from Black voters? Will they vote for the good of the future of the U.S rather then the next handout?

Well, I would think so, seeing as Iowa is 90% white and less than 3% black.

What don't you understand about math?

According to Bureau of Labor Statisitcs from 2009, Blacks are four times more likely than Whites to receive public assistance, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or food stamps.

    Four times.

That was in 2009, before the Obama Administration's aggressive campaign to sign up more minorities up for public assistance that has exploded the number of people getting money from the government.

Thanks to his economic policies, more people need that help than ever before.

The truth is, the United States government has assumed responsibility for black people and supports the majority of them through government jobs, jobs extorted from private businesses through AA, EBT/Food Stamps, TANF/Welfare, Social Security, Section 8 Housing, and other entitlements.

It's a great gig, while it lasts.

Mumia will fry in hell for all eternity, but I'd like to see him do some frying here on earth first.

  50. Last month marked thirty years since the early morning murder of Philadelphia police officer Danny Faulkner, shot in the face as he lay on a downtown sidewalk after being shot in the back from close range. But Faulkner remains unknown while Abu-Jamal has achieved international celebrity and an iconic near-sainthood status among progressives, what with their limitlessly bad judgment in selecting black heroes.

The entertainment industry blithely stampedes over Danny Faulkner’s carcass in their rush to embrace Mumia. Oliver Stone, Sting, Ed Asner, Alec Baldwin, Mike Farrell, Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen, and countless others insist their puppy-eyed dreadlocked hero is merely a “prisoner of conscience,” a crusading activist reporter targeted by fascist stormtroopers for bravely opening his hairy yap one too many times about their evildoing.

The narrative they’ve carefully molded and maintained over the years is that Mumia was framed by racist pigs merely for writing about racist pigs and that he really didn’t exchange gunfire with that racist pig who shot him, even though that racist pig still wound up dead. To them, the pig’s grieving widow is merely an attention-seeking racist bitch. They’re focused solely on Mumia and his suffering.

And although they probably wouldn’t care if Mumia actually did it—after all, don’t all racist capitalist imperialist pigs deserve to be shot in the face?—they insist he didn’t.

The murder was an orchestrated ambush. Abu-Jamal and his brother may have conspired to lure a policeman into making a routine traffic stop by purposely going the wrong way down a one-way street. Then, with the policeman distracted, Mumia would walk up from behind and blow out the racist pig’s brains.

Mumia and his brother know who did it—just as, for a split second, Daniel Faulkner knew.

“They don’t just want my death, they want my silence,” Mumia once wrote, sidestepping the thorny fact that he’s done countless interviews and has published several books and hundreds of articles while the imaginary gulag was supposedly muting him.

You have it all wrong, Mumia. Your silence is the problem. After thirty years and millions of words, you haven’t made a peep about who killed the cop that was magically murdered right before your eyes.

  51. "God the inane disengenious rantings of a leftist. OK Buckwheat, let me try one last time. The simple point is that Ron Paul is against Government subsidies- knowing this and despite that fact he came in third in the Caucus within 4% points of Romney. Now the point and the only point is that if Iowans were Black this would not happen."

No actually you don't get to decide what 'the only point' is.

You and/or Slappy have failed to establish how Iowans 'embraced' Paul, but then oddly forgot to vote for him.

All your hysterical bluff and bluster can't camouflage the fact that you guys have lost another round.

Never mind boys, tomorrow is another day. That's what you guys have to keep telling yourself.

Ummmm.....I do Nimrod it was my post and my point. YOU don't get to decide to change my point in order to avoid reality and make your being incorrect again evaporate.

You and/or Slappy have failed to establish how Iowans 'embraced' Paul, but then oddly forgot to vote for him.

UMMMM they did vote for him. Are you insanestupid or just a lefty liar? There is a difference between more voters casting a ballot for another candidate and "not voting" for him. He came in third obviously he was voted for. I would say nice try but your lying and smoke grenades are quite silly at this point.

All your hysterical bluff and bluster can't camouflage the fact that you guys have lost another round.

Hysterical? Bluff? Bluster? Lost another round? What in the hell are you talking about? You are getting your talking points mixed up. I could care less about Ron Paul if that is what you are trying to imply. I knew he would never win and he wont. He is like all the leftists in power and Obama incompentent nutjobs who cannot embrace reality. Now again the only point I made was that Iowans still voted for him in considerable numbers (yes they did vote) despite his saying subsidies would be eliminated.

Never mind boys, tomorrow is another day. That's what you guys have to keep telling yourself

I will leave the "boys" comment untouched - sonny.

I'll settle for waterboarding Mumia. Something tells me we'd here every last detail of Faulkner's murder.

Here's one cop killer with something to teach Mumia:

Accused cop killer says he's 'sorry' for killing veteran NYPD officer

    By WILLIAM J. GORTA

    January 4, 2012

    Too little, too late.

The thug accused of gunning down Officer Peter Figoski last month during a botched robbery in Brooklyn told detectives after his arrest that he was "sorry" and never set out to "kill a cop."

"I'm sorry for what I did," Lamont Pride told police on Dec. 13 while he was being taken to his arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court, according to court papers made public today.

"I didn't mean for this to happen," Pride added. "I didn't want to kill a cop. It was wrong and I'm sorry. I can't take it back."

  56. “I don’t want to make black peoples’ lives better by giving them somebody else’s money,” Mr. Santorum said. “I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and for their families.”

    Then he grunts:

"all I can say is that I don’t single out any group of people– that’s one thing I don’t do, I don’t divide people by group and race and class.”

    Lawd help these morons.

I'm still waiting for that "black gubmint money".

You and Field and others on FN are taking Santorum's comments out of context. When he shows he is not racist, you will feel very stupid. Why must our folks always get it wrong about Republicans? SMH

    Out of context?

Well why don't you explain exactly what he meant?

It's one thing if he's against welfare and food stamps but he damn sure made it seem that black folks not only are the only ones getting them but that they don't work at all.
