Super Bowl commercials and birthday boys.

It's the day after the Super Bowl, and wingnuts are still up in arms over that Clint Eastwood commercial.  The one where he touts the A-merry-can auto industry and the city of Detroit for making a comeback.

The wingnuts, of course, believe that it's all some kind of subliminal Obama plot. And that Eastwood is some kind of Obama operative.(Eastwood voted for McCain in the last election). Honestly, you need a PhD in craziness to figure out what goes on in the mind of a wingnut. You would think that they would be condemning their own guy for making a racist Super Bowl ad.

Clint himself had to finally make a statement to calm the wingnut waters:

"Eastwood told "O’Reilly Factor" producer Ron Mitchell on Monday: “l am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. ...It was meant to be a message ... just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it.”

Thank you Clint. Now maybe the wingnuts can sleep tonight.

The other commercials were nothing special. As I noted last night, this was the year of the dog in commercial land. It was also the year of washed up actors, comedians, and black guys with Afros. Remember when A-merry-ca was afraid of black guys with Afros? Not anymore. The black man with an Afro has become somewhat of the new magic Negro. That friend that everyone must have. The black friend with an Afro product placement was mandatory for all major commercials during the Super Bowl last night.

Oh, and speaking of the Super Bowl,  someone needs to tell Mrs. Brady that it's not a good look criticizing her husband's teammates after a tough loss.

I know that those small men fans can be jerks, but sometimes you just have to suck it up.

Finally, Happy birthday Bob. I wish you were still here writing songs and spreading love. But di good dem die young mi bredren.

"Field, aren't you going to wish Happy Birthday to another famous person who was born on this date? "

Nope, there is no need to. Every time I drive through a neighborhood that was ravished by drug dealing and crime I remember him.

Ronald Reagan is to blame for black dysfunction? What powers he must have had! Surely an educated man as yourself never fell for the CIA invented crack (and AIDS) stories of the 80's. Maybe you just like to repeat them to keep your audience motivated.

Seeing as he's been dead for quite a while, old Ronnie must be reaching out from the grave to cause all that drug dealing and crime you see on your tourist jaunts. He especially seems to be doing a number on Detroit. I don't think even Clint Eastwood can save old Motown.

Life after white people is pretty grim. If you liberals get your way, 'change' will come to rest of America too. Looks like things are already pretty well along over there in Philly.

    Detroit, City of the Future!

    Tilting at windmills

A new documentary on turbines in upstate New York shows that wind farms are a lot of hot air

    By ROBERT BRYCE

    February 4, 2012

Documentary makers are always hoping that their film will come out at just the right moment, when a favorable news cycle and popular sentiment are converging so that the public is primed for their message.

In 1989, Michael Moore made his career with “Roger & Me,” a documentary that pinned the decline of his hometown — Flint, Mich. — on General Motors.

By focusing his fire on GM’s chairman, Roger Smith, Moore tapped into the public’s anger at tone-deaf corporate bosses as well as the growing disenchantment with the American car industry.

Laura Israel’s new film, “Windfall,” has the same sort of fortuitous timing. Her documentary — which focuses on the fight over the siting of wind turbines in the small upstate town of Meredith — premieres at the same time that “green energy” stimulus failures fill the news, and the wind-energy industry faces an unprecedented backlash from angry rural residents.

Upstate New York residents are rebelling against the noise and flashing lights of wind turbines.

Consider this Nov. 1 story from The Village Market, a news outlet in Staffordshire, England, about 150 miles northwest of London.

The paper’s reporter, covering the staunch local opposition to a proposed wind-energy project near the tiny village of Haunton, wrote, “Huge numbers of people in rural areas are rising up against the technology, despite government assuming they would support it.”

Throughout the UK — indeed, all over the world — fights against large-scale wind-energy projects are raging.

The European Platform against Windfarms lists 518 signatory organizations from 23 countries. The UK alone now has about 285 anti-wind groups.

Last May, some 1,500 protesters descended on the Welsh assembly, the Senedd, demanding that a massive wind project planned for central Wales be stopped.

Although environmental groups like Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace claim that wind energy is the answer when it comes to slowing the rate of growth in carbon dioxide emissions, policymakers from Ontario to Australia are responding to angry landowners who don’t want 100-meter-high wind turbines built near their homes.

Last September, CBC News reported that Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment has logged “hundreds of health complaints” about the thumping noise generated by the province’s growing fleet of wind turbines.

In December, government officials in the Australian state of New South Wales issued guidelines that give residents living within two kilometers of a proposed wind project the right to delay, or even stop, the project’s development.

Back here in the States, many communities are passing ordinances that prohibit large-scale wind energy development.

On Nov. 8, for instance, residents of Brooksville, Maine, voted by more than 2 to 1 in favor of a measure that bans all wind turbines with towers exceeding 100 feet in height.

    Part 2

    Wind Turbines

Meanwhile, the promoters of Cape Wind, a large offshore wind project proposed for Nantucket Sound, are still hoping to get their project built.

But they continue to face lots of well-heeled opposition, including, most notably, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Well-known for his advocacy of renewable energy, Kennedy opposes the wind project — because it will be built a few miles from his family’s estate in Hyannis Port.

As “Windfall” is premiering this week in New York, wind-energy lobbyists in Washington are desperately hoping to convince Congress to pass a multi-year extension of the 2.2-cent-per-kilowatt-hour subsidy for wind energy.

Without it, the domestic wind business, which is already being hammered by falling natural-gas prices, will likely end up becalmed.

Upstate New York residents are rebelling against the noise and flashing lights of wind turbines.

Israel’s portrayal of the bitter feuding that happened in Meredith over wind-energy development is similar to fights that have occurred in numerous other rural communities around the world.

The battle in Meredith (population: 1,500) pitted landowners who stood to profit by putting the wind turbines on their property against those who didn’t.

Israel interviews one couple, Ron and Sue Bailey, who took money from a wind company, a move they soon came to regret.

The couple said they “were blinded by the money” and “never thought about what our neighbors across the road would think.”

The landowner faction in Meredith was led by the town’s supervisor, Frank Bachler.

Israel portrays him as a well-intentioned man who, in favoring the wind development, is trying to help the area’s struggling farmers.

Bachler dismisses the opponents of the wind project as “a minority of people who are very aggressive.”

But Bachler is proven wrong. The anti-wind faction quickly gains momentum and the resulting feud provides a textbook example of small-town democracy.

Three wind opponents run for election to the town board with the stated purpose of reversing the existing board’s position on wind.

In November 2007, they win, and a few weeks later pass a measure banning large-scale wind development.

Israel’s film also features a colorful interview with Carol Spinelli, a fiery real-estate agent in Bovina, a town of about 600 people located a few miles southeast of Meredith.

Bovina passed a ban on wind turbines in March 2007.

Spinelli helped lead the opposition, and she nails the controversy over wind by explaining that it’s about “big money, big companies, big politics.” And she angrily denounces wind-energy developers “as modern-day carpetbaggers.”

That’s a brutal assessment. But it accurately portrays the rural-urban divide on the wind-energy issue.

Lots of city-based voters love the concept of renewable energy.

But they are not the ones who have to endure the health-impairing noise that’s created by 45-story-tall wind turbines, nor do they have to see the turbines or look at their red-blinking lights, all night, every night.

So many want to make the world green — so long as it’s not them who have to suffer for it.

Robert Bryce is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. His latest book, “Power Hungry: The Myths of ‘Green’ Energy and the Real Fuels of the Future,” is now available in paperback.

Last week my younger son was almost mugged.

Almost mugged because he got away from the mugger who tried to get his wallet when he took it out of his pocket to get his Metro Card for the subway.

He told me that big black kids regularly rob smaller white kids who ride in the same subway car he rides to and from school. He says cell phones, iPods and other electronics are commonly taken, so he keeps his phone in his pocket.

But he says it's common for the black thugs -- who target smaller white kids -- to scare the white kids into emptying their pockets.

This is the lesson my son has gotten from Brooklyn's black plague.

Question: Do black parents teach their children that it is OK to steal from white people?

Or, do black people feel that it is OK to steal from white people because of slavery and Jim Crow?

Because while black-on-black crime is widely decried, I have never heard a black person say stealing from whites is wrong. I see zero moral qualms being expressed by any black people when it comes to the epidemic of robbery, assualt and murder perpetrated against white people.

It really seems that the majority of black people feel that when it comes to crime, a white person has it coming to them.

    Am I wrong?

One day on the school bus another kid stole it from his bag when he wasn't looking.

To make a long story short, as a result of my powers of deduction, I identified the most likely culprits. Then I took my son to the bus one morning, got on board and made a little annoucement to the kids.

Like magic, the next day, one of the three black girls -- the only suspects -- returned it to him.

The girl's mother was so upset about her daughter's new possession, that after the girl brought it home, the mother took her out to buy a recharger, because the girl was unable to steal the recharger when she stole the Gameboy.

Several years ago, my older son had his cell phone stolen from his locker during gym class.

Since young criminals are invariably stupid, it occurred to me the thief would make a rookie mistake with his new phone -- he would call someone.

So rather than immediately cancelling phone service, I let the ree-tard use the phone.

Like the moron I expected him to be, he delivered.

After checking the latest phone records for my son's phone by going online to my cell phone account, I got the number the thief called.

I called that kid and asked for his mother. The kid was confused long enough to do what I'd asked.

After a quick discussion with his mother, she told me exactly what I wanted to know -- who had her son talked to on his cell phone in the last hour?

Surprise, surprise, the caller was Duwan, a black kid. Yes, he was the thief. How do I know? Because after I discussed the theft with the appropriate person at the school, Duwan was threatened with expulsion from school. At that point he coughed up the phone.

Dear Brother Field, let me say that it was not necessary for you to diss Reagan on his birthday.

You are one arrogant Negro. That's right. I said it because you have intentionally provoked all Whites and Blacks by refusing to wish Ronald Reagan, one of the greatest ever, HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

How would you like it if some GOP folks refused to wish MLK Happy Birthday? Well, they won't because they are humble, not arrogant like you and some of your followers like uts, pilotx, and mack lyons.

Dear God, please relieve Field of his arrogance. Humble him so that he will have the highest respect for Ronald Reagan and most of all, the GOP. Amen.

  21. Detroit on a comeback?

    911 IS A JOKE
Detroit citizens no longer rely on police as self-defense killings skyrocket

The people of Detroit are taking no prisoners.

Justifiable homicide in the city shot up 79 percent in 2011 from the previous year, as citizens in the long-suffering city armed themselves and took matters into their own hands. The local rate of self-defense killings now stands 2,200 percent above the national average. Residents, unable to rely on a dwindling police force to keep them safe, are fighting back against the criminal scourge on their own. And they’re offering no apologies.

“We got to have a little Old West up here in Detroit. That’s what it’s gonna take,” Detroit resident Julia Brown told The Daily.

The last time Brown, 73, called the Detroit police, they didn’t show up until the next day. So she applied for a permit to carry a handgun and says she’s prepared to use it against the young thugs who have taken over her neighborhood, burglarizing entire blocks, opening fire at will and terrorizing the elderly with impunity.

“I don’t intend to be one of their victims,” said Brown, who has lived in Detroit since the late 1950s. “I’m planning on taking one out.”

How it got this bad in Detroit has become a point of national discussion. Violent crime settled into the city’s bones decades ago, but recently, as the numbers of police officers have plummeted and police response times have remained distressingly high, citizens have taken to dealing with things themselves.

In this city of about 700,000 people, the number of cops has steadily fallen, from about 5,000 a decade ago to fewer than 3,000 today. Detroit homicides — the second-highest per capita in the country last year, according to the FBI — rose by 10 percent in 2011 to 344 people.

BP hikes dividend after strong fourth quarter, sees end to Gulf damage payments

BP also said Tuesday that it expects to complete payments to the Gulf of Mexico Trust Fund this year to cover its liability for damage from the massive blowout of the Macondo well in April 2010.

  33. Good article from George Monbiot, on the latest in the long line of scientific research papers that show that conservatives tend to be stupid.

But what we now see among their parties – however intelligent their guiding spirits may be – is the abandonment of any pretence of high-minded conservatism. On both sides of the Atlantic, conservative strategists have discovered that there is no pool so shallow that several million people won't drown in it. Whether they are promoting the idea that Barack Obama was not born in the US, that man-made climate change is an eco-fascist-communist-anarchist conspiracy, or that the deficit results from the greed of the poor, they now appeal to the basest, stupidest impulses, and find that it does them no harm in the polls.

Don't take my word for it. Listen to what two former Republican ideologues, David Frum and Mike Lofgren, have been saying. Frum warns that "conservatives have built a whole alternative knowledge system, with its own facts, its own history, its own laws of economics". The result is a "shift to ever more extreme, ever more fantasy-based ideology" which has "ominous real-world consequences for American society".

Lofgren complains that "the crackpot outliers of two decades ago have become the vital centre today". The Republican party, with its "prevailing anti-intellectualism and hostility to science" is appealing to what he calls the "low-information voter", or the "misinformation voter". While most office holders probably don't believe the "reactionary and paranoid claptrap" they peddle, "they cynically feed the worst instincts of their fearful and angry low-information political base".

    purple buttercup dreams:

Good article from George Monbiot, on the latest in the long line of scientific research papers that show that conservatives tend to be stupid.

Yeah, the same scientific research that claims more people have heart attacks and beat their wives on Superbowl Sunday than on other days of the year.

Meanwhile, entertainments of the Monbiot variety overlook the daily slaughter in Africa and the middle east to focus on the irrelevant.

Does the endless slaughter in Africa suggest blacks are smarter or dumber than people who live in more peaceful settings?

Was Nazi Germany populated by dummies?

Are Islamic nations populated by dummies? Or are muslims simply delusional?

Is Detroit a haven for morons? Or do you believe the collapse of the city and its primary industry are the result of the superior intellect of its citizens?

How about Cuba? Is Cuba's poverty evidence of high intelligence?

North Korea? The former Soviet Union?

Then there's China, which is, in many ways, conservative. Hmmm. Things are going the right way for them.

And Singapore. On a per-capita basis, possibly the most prosperous nation in the world. Run by a conservative dictator who believes in capitalism.

You liberal nitwits are so desperate for affirmation that you'll accept any crackpot diatribe presented as "scientific research" that claims you boneheads know what you're doing.

    errrrr, neither.

    Ahhh, the justify laziness theme. Figures. As always moonbats leave out relevant cause and therefore NEVER find solutions. It might be accurate if he had said;

Wealth is the inevitable result of
hard work and enterprise, were it not for the Black savage male, every woman in Africa would be better off. Millionaire is way to far a stretch for those who cannot even replicate ancient sewage and aqueduct systems for the basics of life.

Then again packing your house with animal dung, endlessly bearing children that someone on the other side of the world will need to feed and ironing breasts isn't much of an "enterprise" either.

wtf has hobama done that is good since 2008????

for anyone who is NOT a peer bankster????

    what???????
Three years ago, the Obama Administration made it clear that they would not have a targeted policy to deal with racial inequality in wealth or unemployment. The president said that he believed that "the rising tide will lift all boats," implying that targeted policy would not be necessary to deal with inequality. My Finance PhD led me to interpret these words as a racialized-version of trickle-down economics, another failed policy of the Reagan Administration. The notion that racial inequality will simply "fix itself" is socially lazy, naive and counterproductive. The same government that played a role in solidifying inequality in our society must also play a part in correcting that inequality -- we didn't get to this place by ourselves.

Well, the facts have made it clear that the "rising tides" policy has been a miserable failure. Over the last three years, white unemployment has improved, while black unemployment has gotten worse. During the last two months, when the Obama Administration celebrated improved employment numbers for the economy, the fact was that these improvements missed the black community entirely. During the past year, white unemployment has dropped from 8.3 percent to 7.5 percent, while black unemployment has risen from 15.2 percent to 15.8 percent, more than double that of white Americans.

Supporting a black president is very important. But the same courage that it takes for us to get out and vote for the president must be returned with courageous policy that reflects the interests of those who support him. You can't ask for extraordinary support and then turn around and say, "Hey, I'm just a regular guy." Also, avoiding favoritism toward the black community is very different from the abandonment of political responsibility. There are times when it seems that the administration works so hard to avoid appearing biased that it goes to the other extreme - sort of like when a father hires his son and then treats him worse than everyone else.

At the end of the day, the proof must be in the pudding. If the numbers on unemployment, foreclosure and wealth inequality show that Obama has done a good job for black Americans, then we should support him. But if the numbers do not justify his re-election, we should not allow anyone to play the race card to convince us to vote blindly. In fact, I don't even blame those who choose to sit out of the election in protest. Al Sharpton, Tom Joyner, Steve Harvey, Melissa Harris Perry or other Obama surrogates should not be making the decision for you - taking care of a few select members of the black community is not the same as taking care of the community itself. We must be sure to vote intelligently.

Still, the advertising agency that created the commercial — Wieden + Kennedy — has members who have designed Obama campaign items or who have worked on behalf of Democratic causes.

The creative minds behind the ad are in the agency’s Portland, Ore., branch. Aaron Allen designed a poster for the 2008 Obama campaign and Jimm Lasser designed a basketball sneaker called the “Obama Force One,” with an image of the president on the soles and the message “A Black Man Runs and a Nation Is Behind Him.” Lasser displayed the shoe in a 2008 gallery exhibition with the tagline “The Dunk on McCain.”

Elsewhere at Wieden + Kennedy, which has Kraft and Coca-Cola on its client list, global public relations director Joani Wardwell worked in the press office of the Clinton White House. She started as a grassroots organizer for Democratic causes in the early 1990s and continues to do political consulting.

What does capitalism make possible exactly? Other than fascism, racism, crisis, unemployment and inequality?

"Cuba cannot find oil or gas in the same body of water in which the US finds vast quantities."

Entirely due to the American economic boycott. The platform currently exploring for Cuban oil had to be dragged more than half way across the world from China.

There is no Cuban fishing industry, at least there's no fishing industry using motor-powered vessels.

It may be possible for Cubans to play like Santiago in "The Old Man and the Sea" and head out into the Gulf in a sailboat. But that's the limit of the Cuban fishing industry.

Cuba has no gasoline or diesel fuel for fishing boats. I know, I know, you're too caught up in your delusional nonsense to realize these simple realities of the Cuban experience.
