Picking on the meek.

As we get closer to election general election day 2012, we are starting to get a glimpse of what A-merry-ca will look like if republicans take congress, the senate, and the White House.

Here in Pistolvania the republican controlled legislature has already put a law into effect that will make it harder for grandma and grandpa to get food stamps.

"HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Welfare Department will start asking food-stamp recipients next week to prove they do not have significant personal assets in order to qualify for benefits.

Advocates for the poor say the new policy will be expensive to administer and hurt families for whom the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program can be a lifeline. It goes into effect Tuesday, but it will be about six months before the department knows how many have lost benefits.

"The majority who will lose benefits - the significant majority - are seniors and people with disabilities," Julie Zaebst, policy center manager for the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, said Friday. "In our experience, many of those folks are saving for medical expenses and funeral expenses."  [Source]

If you owe creditors money when the republicans start running things again, your credit might be the least of your problems.

Just look what their friends in the health care industry are doing to people who owe them money. And this is with Obamacare.

"How did breast cancer survivor Lisa Lindsay end up behind bars? She didn't pay a medical bill -- one the Herrin, Ill., teaching assistant was told she didn't owe. "She got a $280 medical bill in error and was told she didn't have to pay it," The Associated Press reports. "But the bill was turned over to a collection agency, and eventually state troopers showed up at her home and took her to jail in handcuffs."

Although the U.S. abolished debtors' prisons in the 1830s, more than a third of U.S. states allow the police to haul people in who don't pay all manner of debts, from bills for health care services to credit card and auto loans. In parts of Illinois, debt collectors commonly use publicly funded courts, sheriff's deputies, and country jails to pressure people who owe even small amounts to pay up...

Under the law, debtors aren't arrested for nonpayment, but rather for failing to respond to court hearings, pay legal fines, or otherwise showing "contempt of court" in connection with a creditor lawsuit. That loophole has lawmakers in the Illinois House of Representatives concerned enough to pass a bill in March that would make it illegal to send residents of the state to jail if they can't pay a debt. The measure awaits action in the senate.

"Creditors have been manipulating the court system to extract money from the unemployed, veterans, even seniors who rely solely on their benefits to get by each month,"
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said last month in a statement voicing support for the legislation. "Too many people have been thrown in jail simply because they're too poor to pay their debts. We cannot allow these illegal abuses to continue." [Source]

If you think that our jails are overcrowded with you Negroes now, just wait until the republicans bring back debtors prisons. You Negroes just love to get s*** on credit and not pay for it.

But it's not only Negroes, old people, and the sick, who are going to feel the wrath of my republican friends; young folks will be sharing in the misery as well.

I say this because Flipper's boy has a plan for student loans, and it is not good.

"The Ryan Budget Would Allow The Interest Rate For Student Loans To Double. “There was wide agreement among members of Congress Wednesday that loans and grants are important, but there were questions about the $6 billion Obama proposal that would hold interest rates constant next year. Ryan’s budget would allow the rate to double as planned.” [Inside Higher Ed, 3/29/12]

2012: Cuts Proposed Under The House Republican Budget Will Likely Target Programs Like Head Start, Pell Grants For College Students And State Aid.“Under pressure from House conservatives, Mr. Ryan cut nearly $20 billion from spending levels set in the debt-ceiling pact, breaking faith with the Senate and potentially leading to a government shutdown this fall. Much of that reduction is likely to come from programs like Head Start, Pell grants for college students and state aid.” [Source]

What you disadvantaged people need is a really good PAC.

I say come up with the $280 or we are putting the tumor back in. I hate deadbeats.

I thought they were asking this s### already, wtf. Well, it is only recent that blacks in America have been accumulating personal assets. So in essence, this would mostly impact the older white applicants and "disabled" whites who are beneficiaries of family inheritances.

However, many have long caught on. If you notice at a certain age, Jews, Asians, E. Indians, and Arabs etc. living in America, strategically transfer businesses/personal assets over to their adult children in order to qualify for these various welfare programs. This has been going on for decades in America. That's why it tickles me when certain people claim that more "blacks" are on welfare. If they only know.

"You Negroes just love to get s*** on credit and not pay for it."

But Field, it's not just black people, I hope you were being sarcastic. When blacks do it, it's called a criminal act, but when whites do it, it's called "getting in over ones head" or "making poor choices". Nice.

And in case you didn't know, a lot of "identity theft" perpetrators are statistically melanin challenged.

Good night trolls, blow it out your racist pipe while I'm sleeping.

Field, you have it wrong about the Republicans making it harder for students. Haven't you heard? Romney has solved the whole educational problem for students:

Repubs are going to have their way and seniors will lose some benefits even if the Republicans DON'T win House and Senate and the WH. You forget the GOP only needs ONE house to get its agenda through. Meanwhile,, the Dems can't get anything through with the WH, and majority in The House and Senate!

Gosh, all those Progressive/Liberal bloggers who pointed out that some of the Rs wanted a return of the Gilded Age...and all its horrors...were derided for...being correct.

Love how a multimillionaire Dad can be a Bank Of Dad...and his clewless son assumes all parents have a few spare thousands to 'loan'.

Obama says - vote for me Santa Claus Obama, we can borrow some more or print some more until milk costs 10 bucks a gallon due to inflation. Don't worry, it will never run out - promise.

If only babies could hit the factory floor no sooner than they hit the delivery table...

Debtor's prisons? I expect those to be filled by countless student loan bearers along with those poor sobs who fall behind on the mortgages and those rent-to-own payments. The workhouses will be back up soon enough and once welfare's dead and gone, you'll either get a helping hand from the church or learn how to love the taste of rat, dog and cockroach. Those Asians know how to do it and Obama too, or so I heard :D

Field, it looks like our friends in the GOP really want to get deep into some real Dickensian shit, don't they?

So let me see if I get it. It's only the GOP that wants to do means testing to make sure frauds aren't taking money from taxpayers to buy food? Says who? Who says they aren't democrats? I mean are you saying democrats borrow and spend other peoples money and the GOP wants to cut it?

Who is going to get the bill for all this taking from taxpayers, giving to others who are saving someone else's money for something else? Sounds crazy to me so this has to be demorats doing this.

Next thing you know they are going to want people to work for a living, stop doing drugs even gasp...paying some taxes. Horrible people. It's all free..swipe your EBT and thank that nice man on his way to work for supporting you.

  9. Anon@4:33AM, do u realize that MOST poor people work very hard for a living? Some of them have two and three jobs. Man you wingnuts sure love to demonize the poor.

Means testing seems reasonable and even admirable at first. Then the GOP claims the system is so bedridden that it needs to be put down like Old Yeller.

"Next thing you know they are going to want people to work for a living, stop doing drugs even gasp...paying some taxes. Horrible people. It's all free..swipe your EBT and thank that nice man on his way to work for supporting you."

Because we all know the poor are lazy sobs who lay around all day, shoot dope/coke/meth while not paying a single dime in taxes. You guys need to learn how to be a bit more creative with your hooks.

  11. I guess sales taxes, ad valorem taxes, Social Security and FICA don't count (and yes, I know you can get FICA back). Poor people pay those taxes. Our anon friends think that getting refunds back equals not paying taxes.

While slagging on the poor for "not paying" their taxes, they overlook guys like Mitt Romney and corporate outfits like GE who get out of paying taxes by making the tax code their bitch year after year.

Anon @ 3:09 AM's worried about inflation when he should be worried about deflation. That's when the price of milk goes down to $2/gal, but he can't buy it because he doesn't a job anymore.

Jesus, Field. Do you have any idea what you are talking about? What exactly is "Obamacare" to you?

This has nothing to do with it. This woman is being sued by a hospital for non-payment. Has happened for generations. You can argue the tactics and her individual case, but what you do try to slam Obama?

Defend that statement or retract it.

In fact, when Medicaid expansion kicks in--if SCOTUS doesn't knock it down--she probably wouldn't have any bills.

Better yet, look into what "Obamacare" really means. Otherwise, you're no better than the disinformation assholes on the right.

    You disappoint me.

The anon at 1202 is right, the GOP is controlling the agenda because of spineless Dems.
Anyhoo I'm in DC and just happened to be at the same hotel as the correspondent's dinner. Other than having to get dropped off a block away and walking to the hotel it has been a surreal experience. I bumped into Bill Press walking back from the pizza place and packaged goods store. On the way back up to my room I bumped into Joe Madison, one of my dad's favs, but I didn't say anything I had a brown paper bag with an adult beverage so I spared us both an uncomfortable greet. "Great, my fans are alcoholics" nah, just cheap pilots. I bet Sully brought his own stuff too. Well about to hit the treadmill, wonder who I'll see in there.

    ----------

Right. The GOP House has passed 26 jobs bills that the Democrat Senate, led by Harry Reid, has refused to even bring to a vote. The GOP House has passed a budget every year, but the Democrat Senate has refused to bring them up for a vote. Reid did let the President's ridiculous budget come up for a vote, but not a single Democrat voted for Obama's budget, which lost 99-0. They haven't passed a budget in OVER THREE YEARS.

And this inaction is the Republican's fault?

The Republicans control only 1/2 of the legislative branch. The Democrats control the other half, plus the Presidency. They control everything that gets passed.

The first two years of Obama's term the Democrats had both the House and the Senate. In the Senate, they had a supermajority of 60 senators that was filibuster proof. But they couldn't pass a budget.

What they did do was ram through Obamacare, against the wishes of a majority of Americans. That is why they lost the House in 2010. That, along with their continued incompetence, is why they are going to lose the Senate and the White house in 2012.

They can talk about free birth control and free college tuition all they want. Only the idiots are still listening, and they vote Democrat anyway.

Obama blew a historic opportunity, coming in after the last clown. He could have been on Mount Rushmore with George Washington. Instead, the best he can hope for now is being on a Church's Fried chicken souvenir cup, along wiht Jimmy Carter.

How the heck do you prove that you *don't* have any assets?

  18. Yes. I know a few old white people who have run up bills on their credit cards knowing they'd die before they had to pay in full.

  19. Here in Cali, a judgment-creditor can set a debtors exam, personally serve it in the judgment-debtor, and upon the JD failure to appear file a civil arrest warrant for contempt with a $250 bail. All the Sheriff does with that is serve it on the JD with a new court date. Then, if the JD again fails to appear, bail doubles and it's served again. If, on a 3rd service the JD again fails to appear, bail again doubles and the sheriff takes them into "custody" and releases them on a promise to appear, violation of which is a misdemeanor (criminal contempt). No one ever has to actually put up bail or go to jail until after this point, and even then few sheriffs would do anything but release them on sheriffs parole unless the judge ordered otherwise.

Now, that's the Sheriff's procedure. But, I have seen people held in other states and counties until the warrants status is clarified, had their cars towed and impounded, animals taken by animal control, even kids taken into temporary custody in the mean time.

Many people faced with an "arrest warrant" do end up paying though, involuntarily by wage garnishment if nothing else. it is a big stick, and collection agencies know how to use it to advantage. I've had at least a hundred people bring these to me at one or another of the legal clinics I've run or worked.

Can't control gas prices. But how about more taxes on the folks who make over a mil. and cutting out some of their tax breaks?
