Black History Month cuisine.

soul foodI have a suggestion for White folks: Please do not wade into the Black History Month waters in the future. I mean I know that you folks mean well, but the following story is not the way you want to show your knowledge of black culture.

"A Black History Month cafeteria special of watermelon, fried chicken and cornbread proposed at an all-girls Catholic school has sparked outrage among community members who are denouncing the menu as a celebration of black stereotypes, not history.

Carondelet High School in Concord, Calif. announced Monday it would be serving the meal that week, but reactions from students and parents prompted an assembly and explanatory letter the next day, NBC reports.

"I'd like to apologize for this announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members," principal Nancy Libby stated. "Please know that at no time at Carondelet do we wish to perpetrate (sic) racial stereotypes," adding that she met with leaders of the school’s Black Student Union, who requested the watermelon be removed from the menu.

According to the Associated Press, the items were removed from the menu, and the school will hold an assembly on diversity." [Source]

Lord have mercy, and this is in California.

Now let's be clear, I happen to like cornbread and fried chicken--- although as I get older I eat less of the stuff. But I am sure that a lot of white folks love these things as well. In fact have you ever noticed how fast fresh watermelon flies off the produce shelf in lily white neighborhoods?

Now, sadly, we get the predictable "assembly on diversity". It should be interesting. I bet KFC will be catering it.

Finally, speaking of diversity, it seems that Jerry Seinfeld found himself in some hot water when he made some comments about race and diversity lately.

Personally, I never thought that he was funny, and while the rest of America was watching Friends, I was watching Living Single, and Martin.

This all stems from his new web series called white "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee". Apparently folks are surprised at the lack of diversity on the program.

But why is this a surprise? This is a guy who had a sitcom based in the middle of New York, and you could see more black people on the ice in an NHL game than in his sitcom.

"People think [comedy] is the census or something, it's gotta represent the actual pie chart of America," ..... "Who cares?"

Where is Newman when you need him?

  1. Gotta disagree on principle on this one Field. "Soul Food" the blend of 3 continents' ingredients & meathods into a unique repettoire ultimately becoming one of the world's great cuisines is as almost as great a cuItural achievement as Jazz. It should be as celebrated. Even if (inevitably) lamely in a school lunch. Although I'd have proposed catering had I been in charge for authenticity's sake if nothing else.

Does that make the comedians racist or the people watching racist?

Lawd have mercy is right! That's how they're celebrating black History month! Jesus Christ. In 2014!!!
Unbelievable really! There outta be a law. Don't wanna even think how they would celebrate Latin History month. Beans, rice, pork chops and flan. Way to go! Oh and beer! 57Now how about a little "La Bamba" and we'll call it a day :)))

Seinfeld is supposedly coming here to do a show in San Juan in March. I say he ran out of money. His comedy by itself is very dry and quite unfunny. The show was a success because of the characters. It was called 'Seinfeld' not 'Friends' :D

I think it was a hit because of it's New York affiliation much as Sex in the City was. Friends was the biggest piece of crap, in my opinion anyway.

For pete's sake, Field. It's a goddamn lunch that the school wanted to honor Black History month with.

Our folks upset over watermelon stereotyping us? Well, the truth is we eat watermelons like no tomorrow and we get upset when Whites put it on the menu during Black History month? WTF?

We are crazy and angry and make no sense whatsoever. If Blacks in Concord think it's stereotyping them, then they should leave the school. As far as I am concerned the school did NOTHING wrong...Watermelon is popular with Blacks.

But, these Blacks live in and around the Bay Area, which means they are weird anyway. They hate they were born Black. That's why they are pissed off. They don't want to be associated with 'anything' that is Black. It's not the watermelon that has made them angry. It's the fact that they will never be White. the bay area is a weird in the sense that Blacks are more against themselves than the Whites are.

That 's why the area is jokingly called "Uncle Tom's Sell-Out." It's very different from LA, CA.

    How pathetic.

Man, the BGI police were quick to get out the whip and start crackin'. Gotta make sure those white people continue to feel guilty and understand that if black people are "offended" it's a major crime.

I mean, after all, without white guilt, the BGI funding machine would dry up overnight. Can't have that!

So.. reading this... on Friday, am standing in line at the express checkout with a few lines, and the black guy in line behind me puts on the belt .... a malt liquor, fried chicken from the deli counter, and watermelon.

My friend and I burst out laughing. He gave us a death glare. So I guess we're racist for finding this funny.

People need to get over themselves.
It's going to be a looooong monkeyshines month.

Is there anything that doesn't "offend" black people?

And then "black people" wonder why NFS has set in (Negro Fatigue Syndrome).

"Racist" is a word invented by the communist agitprop specialists to evoke white guilt. It's losing its magic to empty the pockets of white people for the benefit of black people.

    Or have a fish fry.

As for the chicken list, I was thinking about all the ways I like chicken. Black people fry fish. It's a cheap meal that you can go fishing and catch.

Still, my point remains, since the show that he did produce was just as lacking in diverse characters.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Field, I didn't watch Friends for the reason you cited, i.e., the fictional all-white NYC in which these characters lived. But Seinfield did have black characters, some who were a part of plot lines, not extras in the background. One was a Johnny Cochran knockoff representing Kramer; another was a family that with whom George watched a movie version of a book he was too lazy to read the book for the book club he had joined. Those are two instances that come to mind and they were funny episodes.

I also watched Living Single and In Living Color. Martin, not so much. As much as I like Martin Lawrence, that show was full of stereotypes and his character was annoying .

    ReplyDelete

    Kinky Con,

Did you just move to this country or do you live in another country?

Since, we're celebrating Black History month, let me school you on another part of history here in the USA land of equal opportunity...LOL!

Black people throughout history have always been the LAST to be hired and the FIRST to be fired. Those who believe that they should have privileges over other people of a darker hue always hire their own first and give those of a darker hue what is left over. It's called job discrimination.

I think most Black people who live in the USA know that and have observed that all their lives or someone in the older generation in their family has pulled their coat to it. Inequality is not new to Black people. Stop blaming the President for unemployment, he does not interview or hire people for any of these jobs in the USA.

That being a part of Black History, is the main reason why the GOP wanted to end unemployment because they believe that it will hurt Black people. However, they don't care if they hurt some of their own poor white people, which they always do in the process.

His policies haven't failed, the GOP congress has blocked everything he has attempted to do. People are not blind with the exception of the GOP base that don't recognize that. Anyone with common sense and knows how the government works knows that.

Bills start in the House, which is controlled by the GOP. If they don't bring it to the floor, nothing gets done. The GOP House of rep only agenda is to see the President fail, to obstruct, and to fatten their families' coffers.

Random comments. I can see it both ways.

    1. Could it have been any more stereotyped, right down to the watermelon? That's the worst, watermelon, like the cartoon of a wide-smiling negro. You need a shoe shine, suh?

    2. Cherry picking. Fried chicken, corn bread, watermelon for Black History Month. Did anyone ask what they did for other ethnic group recognition? Was food part of the deal? Pizza on Columbus Day? Enchilidas on Cinco de Mayo? Bratwurst for Adolf Hitler's birthday? (Can we laugh, or is that forbidden?)

    3. Hey it's food. It's especially southern food, and (almost) every black person in America traces American roots to the south. Guess what too? Lots of white people like fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon. Can't we all eat?

    4. Can we just talk? Why didn't someone at the school call up some black parents and ask?

    5. Can we just talk? Some people are racists, but a lot more people are awkward, scared, and isolated and don't know what the hell to do. Why didn't someone call up some black parents? Maybe they were afraid of asking a stupid question. How do you start a conversation?

I can really see it both ways. More randomness. It's the only way I can handle it, 'cause it doesn't make sense. None if it makes sense.

    1. People don't know what to say. Someone dies and they don't know what to say. They want to reach out but they are afraid of saying the wrong thing so they don't say anything. Everyone's lonelier.

    2. Lots of white people want to know black people but they don't know how. They don't know what to say. It's stupid and ridiculous and they know it, so they say nothing.

    3. Watermelon. Now if the black folks down the street come to my block party (will they even come?) is it dangerous to have a watertmelon? I don't like watermelon but it's summer and maybe other people like watermelon. Maybe the black folks down the street like watermelon, and how f'ing stupid is it to worry? But the watermelon-eatin' negro is truly one of the nastier stereotypes of my youth. I knew it when I was 5 years old.

    4. No fan of ol' man Barack any more, not after he lied his ass off about health care and totally fucked it up. But I sure like his family, especially his wife and her healthy food kick. But I'm afraid to say the wrong thing.

    5. This is all to awkward. Why didn't someone just have a laugh. Does anyone ever just laugh it off anymore? They served chicken, cornbread and watermelon. There wasn't a noose in the cafeteria. Does anyone ever laugh? That's what I did. I said to the ball & chain: "Did you hear about the private christian school in California that served fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon for Black History Month?" We had a good laugh. Sorry, but we laughed. Does anyone ever laugh at anything anymore? Ever? Am I the last laugher on earth?

    6. I didn't laugh at Trayvon Martin.

    7. Never liked fried chicken, but I love it grilled. Corn bread, it's the best. Can someone pass the corn bread? Can we eat? Can we laugh. Can we talk? Can we say stupid things and laugh? Can we eat?

    4. I don't know about your other white commenters, but I can imagine. Some nastiness (as a general idea) comes from disappointment and frustration. It winds up looking like hate, and when it happens it's depressing.

    5. Hurt + ego = anger.

    6. The biggest thing that white people fear about black people is crime. It scares "us" as much as the police scare "you."

    7. I wouldn't want to be black and stopped by the police. I don't blame black people for being afraid of being stopped by the police.

    8. The thing I hate most is being afraid of each other. Fear is the acid that consumes trust.

    9. Very few things would inspire me more than to see a million man march of black businessmen. You can't speak for all black people, and I can't speak for all white people, but I think a whole lot of white people would cheer their heads off for that march.

    10. "Us" and "you" stinks, but sometimes reality stinks. Now what do we do about it? Can we all eat?

I don't agree with a bunch of what I see here when I lurk, but you're an interesting guy. And it's been a good 20 years since I was last in Philly, so I'd like to get there again anyway.

This complaint is idiotic. Cry me a river.
What will they serve during WHITE history month? Surf and Turf with a nice Cab Sauv? A baby greens salad with balsamic vinaigrette? Do I get to be offended if they serve that during White history month?
    Field Negro, pleeze!

reality flash... what will they serve during Biafran history month?... nothing, because the Nigerians STARVED them to death in a show of racial solidarity.
