Fitting the description.

A few years ago I was at the Miami International Airport waiting on a flight. A middle aged white lady sat next to me and told me that I reminded her of an actor but she just could not remember his name. She politely asked me if I would mind telling her who it was I reminded her of......

Sometimes fitting the description can create an amusing and bewildering experience with a total stranger. Sometimes, on the other hand, it can be dangerous to your health. Especially if you are a black man in America.

Take the case of poor Charles Belk for instance.

"After Charles Belk's Facebook post about being detained by Beverly Hills Police who mistook him for a robbery suspect went viral, the BHPD issued a statement. In it, they both defend their actions and apologize for the "inconvenience."

In the statement issued by the Beverly Hills Police Department yesterday, police say they were looking for the sidekick of the Purse-Packing Bandit. The Purse-Packing Bandit was a woman who carried a handgun in her purse, hence the moniker, and had robbed a number of banks. Witnesses told police she had a male accomplice who would distract other bank employees while she performed the robbery. He was described as a tall, bald, black male wearing a green shirt. Belk was a block away from a nearby Citibank the pair had just hit when he was spotted by police.

Charles Belk—who is a TV and film producer—wasn't in Beverly Hills robbing banks. He was at a pre-Emmys event, working with his client, singer-songwriter and actor Rotimi, KPCC reports. After the event, he went to meet a friend for a meal on Wilshire Boulevard, then went to check on a parking meter before moving on to other pre-Emmys activities at about 5 p.m. It was on his way to that meter on La Cienega Boulevard that Belk says he was stopped by a police officer, then handcuffed and made to sit on the curb.

He was then detained at the Beverly Hills police station for six hours before they reviewed surveillance footage, realized they had the wrong man and let Belk go. During this time, Belk said he was not read his rights, nor given a phone call.
According to the BHPD's release:
"After an eye witness positively identified the subject in a field show-up, police arrested Charles Belk for suspicion of robbery. A follow-up investigation by detectives ultimately determined that Mr. Belk was not involved in the robbery and he was released from custody without charges."
The statement goes on to say that the BHPD "deeply regrets the inconvenience to Mr. Belk and has reached out to him to express those regrets and further explain the circumstances. However, based on witness accounts, and his location close to the bank, officers properly detained and arrested him based on the totality of the circumstances known at the time of the field investigation."
What Belk doesn't understand is why it took investigators so long to just look at the tape and realize he wasn't the man they were looking for.

"I was on the brink of tears... I couldn't believe that they had taken six hours of my time for something that I felt was readily accessible and easily verifiable," Belk told NBC LA.

Belk also believes that if it weren't for his connections, he might still be behind bars.

"If I did not have a friend there that saw me, and that friend wouldn't have called my friend who works at NAACP and she wouldn't have called an attorney, I am convinced that I would still be locked up."

One can't help but wonder if it weren't for the over 30,000 shares of Belk's Facebook post and the surrounding media attention, if the BHPD wouldn't have apologized for the six-hour "inconvenience" at all." [Source]

Mr. Belk, fortunately for you there were people you could call with connections.

Millions of black and poor folks in America do not have that luxury. What happened to you is their reality on a daily basis.

The Beverly Hills PD do not see a lot of black folks, so, to them, we all pretty much look alike.

Still, Mr. Belk is lucky to be alive. Had he been reaching for his wallet to reload the parking meter when the police arrived, he could have ended up like a teenager from Ferguson, Missouri.

Fortunately for him, though, he will live another day to produce films and television shows.

I have an idea for the title of his next project: "WHEN FITTING THE DESCRIPTION GOES WRONG."

  1. When the description consists of "black, male, tall, and bald" (and probably in that order) it's pretty easy to fit it. Maybe they could work on being more specific?

    Yep, so what's the problem?

The robber was black (surprise) so it made sense to stop a black man fitting the description.

Stop committing so many Goddamned crimes if you don't want to be looked at with suspicion and distrust.

Field, if you are an NBA fan here is a historical note of concerning police arrogance in a similar encounter.

In 1998 Paul Pierce was drafted by the Boston Celtics and joined the team amidst much fanfare in the Boston press. Soon after coming to Boston, Paul went shopping with his girl friend in the wealthy suburban town of Wellesley Massachusetts. At the time Paul was dressed in very expensive fur-like long coat with a special well blocked hat to match his coat. Shortly before his arrival a bank in the same area (as the line of stores Paul was visiting) was held up by a short black man wearing a Patriots jacket with a hood. The Wellesley police stopped Pierce and his girlfriend and with guns drawn forced Pierce to the ground on his stomach and cuffed him there with his hands behind him. Completely indifferent to the pleas from Paul's girlfriend and some passersby who recognized him as the newest Celtic and joined in the pleas to release him, Pierce spent over 15 minutes laying on the dirty sidewalk. Finally Pierce was assisted up and walked over to the bank in handcuffs for a visual identification, which resulted in his release from the police station about an hour later.

Even in the face of an overwhelming avalanche of public rage over their racist conduct the Wellesley police still refused to issue a public apology for their actions concerning Paul Pierce. As you know Paul Pierce went on from this embarrassment on the streets of Wellesley to a stellar career with the Boston Celtics including an NBA championship.

How can one be 'certain' about Yisheng, Dr Nuwang, Dr Queen, Flying N my Forties, etc. A person with such brilliant names MUST be somebody waiting to blossom.

Trollonymous Burgundy, I knew you had it in you to 'keep Hope alive' for Yisheng. When I think of the years Yisheng has been chasing after her dreams it would be a damn shame if it didn't happen.

When I think of all the folks taunting Dr Yisheng, and calling her a LIAR, it made me cry. I mean I cried for a long time. I cried for all those years FN Negroes have been calling her a LIAR. I mean, we're talking a lot of years here.

It has struck me that a brilliant woman of her sophistication didn't deserve to be treated the way. Why, I ask myself, do some FN Negroes, both Black and White treat a high-class woman like Yisheng as though she will never be a doctor?

I mean, I don't get it. The woman have told us countless times for years of her capabilities and all we did was call her a LIAR. That has to be a great sin that we will have to answer for in the afterlife. I am nervous about it and hope FP can say something about sins against Yisheng and how serious they might be. I mean, I don't want to go to hell over this.

The cops were probably right to question the guy, under the circumstances, but it shouldn't have been so damn hard to figure out that he wasn't actually the suspect and to and release him.

I mean, he'd walked out of a restaurant to feed a parking meter. How hard would it have been to ask the man's lunch companions and the restaurant's waitstaff if he'd just been in there moments earlier, rather than robbing a bank? This seems like gross incompetence on the part of the cops.

Who knows what the explanation was for the witness who picked him out of a lineup. Bad recollection? Just a bigot who sees black men in general as criminals? Or maybe the police did something to bias the witness' response?

A friend of mine, who is black, had something similar happen to her parents -- a nice, law-abiding middle-aged couple living in the south suburbs of Chicago. The cops thought that their car matched the general description of one used in a crime. That was all the cops had to go on -- no license plate number, and no details on the suspects.

So ... they got tossed in jail overnight. In the morning, the douchebag cops released them -- with no apology or explanation. Then, get this, they had to pay to get their car out of impound. (There were no tickets registered to the car.) Talk about insult to injury!

No one says a Black woman can't become a doctor, in fact, the majority of Black MD's are now earned by women.
Here's the rub with Yingyand. She's not a doctor in anything. She is, however, an unaccomplished lawyer. She has portrayed herself as a medical doctor, medical student, aspiring doctor, PhD researcher, mentor in STEM studies as well as a tutor. She even claimed that she tutored medical students at a rate of $100 an hour, which is a blatant, bald faced lie because that just doesn't exist. Now she claims that attends classes at "prestigious" university, which at best puts her at masters level or below. She relies upon race loyalty for support because just about everyone else knows she's full of crap.

Field, every thought about NASCAR has a second career? They way you make those twist and turns.....

Her success isn't the issue. Her bitterness and racism/racial resentment is the problem.

She makes it easy for posters to go at her. Which she enjoys. It feeds her feelings of superiority.

She doesn't fell the need to tell everyone, everyday how great she is and what she has accomplished.

Focusedpurpose gets attacked daily, yet she stays classy and uses her wit like a knife.

  45. and while folk preaching on negativity...

PLEASE go see just how much of it YOU have contributed to the most recent threads, dr many names. if you really want to take a seat for a loooong time, you could hit up the archives.

note also how often i simply ignore you+ your shameful, i-wish-you-were-NOT-Black foolishness.

it would be wise to cut out the foolishness even when you feel threatened. which is the bulk of the time for some odd reason, if behavior is any indication. it is the strangest thing for one who claims to be/feel so blessed.

you came for me, not i for you. this is the usual pattern before the verbal smack down gets administered. i simply stated that i understand why KC might not like you. then i addressed him for his funny yet not cool comment against you. while your teehee peeps, FN, PX and the rest played their regular mute role, rather than having your back.

teehee hee just lies in wait to come for me, knowing she needs more people. lol. meanwhile the cat got her tongue when folk stomp new holes in your behind on the regular over here.

then you lost your whole mind + decorum as per usual dr many names.

    that's what happened.

i whacked ya when you were just below the belt nasty with Trolly. like you don't know pushing 50 hollering 'bout husbands/menopause might not be what you want to put out there. lol. you are welcome, again, for the dose of reality i sent back to ya while i had Trolly's back.

i have no beef with you.. you may either back up in the interest of peace. OR rest assured when i get tired of you breathing down my neck or insulting my peeps, i will back you up. that's you, teehee hee, and the heavily agenda'd with no understanding homo, too.

when it is all said and done, it really is All Love. there is no one over here that i have Real beef with Truth be told. it is not that serious. my purpose for visiting is not to bicker. i am not a soft target either, so folk would do well to act accordingly.

I still don't understand all the hateration for the good doctor. Is it so hard for folks to believe that a black woman can be a doctor?

    Seriously, I don't get it.
    -----

    Black women can be doctors.

    Black women can be scientists.

Black women can can lead lives of achievement and accomplishment that can be admired by all of us.

None of this applies to Yisheng.

    1. She is a liar, who has claimed for years to be a doctor, when in fact she is not.

    2. She is an ingrate, running down the country and society that has allowed he to be a perpetual student.

    3. She is a bigot, who constantly demeans people for being poor working class taxpayers whose taxes subsidize her non-productive lifestyle.

    4. She is a racist, whose resentment of whites runs so deep that she has called for genocide. She also despises dark-skinned American Blacks and asserts her Caribbean heritage makes her superior.

    5. She is a materialist, who only wants to be a doctor so she drive a Mercedes and have a piece of paper on her wall that proves she is better than anyone without one.

    6. She is an awful person, whose desperate insecurity drives her to tear down others in an attempt to fulfill her juvenile need for superficial status posturing.

Calling out Yisheng's bullshit and pushing back at her ignorant comments is not a refutation of the idea that other black women can be doctors. Like many black scam artists, she hides behind a false front of racial heroism when it fact it's all about her.

How could you not get that Field?

thanks for your kind words all the same.

what you see is NOT me.

    it is Yah.

He sent me double gat strapped, with His Word/Sword of the Spirit, like a samurai sword on my back.

i confessed from jump that i would like to blast + behead devils...

    on sight.

    but this is not permissible.

the meek (bridled strength) shall inherit the earth.

now IF i could come over here and be meek despite the attacks, i would feel much better in the big picture.

despite my mistakes, i am committed to doing my best daily to be pleasing in His sight.

we don't always agree KC. there is a way to be civil even in disagreement. it is my prayer that dr many names will embrace this concept...or go be light skinneded latina.

    lol.

Blessed Black women don't need the pr nightmare, frankly. we got enough among us that have no family to teach 'em nor clue of how to handle themselves. dr many names has no excuse for her shameful, hateful, divisive antics.

blessings to you in Abundance KC.

Do you really think President Obama could have been elected president TWICE without proving to the appropriate authorities that he DID in fact graduate from Columbia AND Harvard?

BTW, how many other Presidents released ALL of their academic transcripts or was this just a requirement for the half-Black one?

Did you release your transcripts to all of America when you got your current job? What about the previous one?

Are you under the impression a college degree is required to be president?

    What authorities would that be?

No one in government checks the resume claims of a presidential candidate. Vetting is supposed by done by the voters with the assistance of the media. In Obama's case, the media worked very hard to obscure any hard look at Obama's background.

Once elected President, Obama had the highest security clearance. Without being elected, it is doubtful he could have passed even a basic security check.

Obama was sold as a 'genius' who graduated from Columbia and Harvard and was President of the Law review. This makes asking to see some records legitimate.

Obama's entire life story is one full of fiction. There is no one who has occupied the oval office of whom we know so little.

There is no other reason for the complete lack of transparency other than that there is much to hide.

I'm in a field (pun intended, LOL) where pedigree means a LOT. And it isn't lost on me that many opportunities are open to me because of the universities I've graduated from.

What I learned VERY early in the "game" of scientific research is that educated folks are CLEAR that NO Black person was "given" a degree from a place like Harvard. In fact, given that there are so few Blacks attending top notch schools I'd say that the their path to graduation was FAR More difficult that the average legacy admit. Being the ONLY Black person in a course of study can be difficult on a level that can't be measured.

This reminds me that in one of my elective courses this semester, I'm the ONLY one in the class without "Dr" in front of my name. But it's understood among my peers and the professor whose permission I had to get to enroll in the class, that I wouldn’t be there, if I couldn't BE there. ;)

My point is that highly educated people are usually smart enough to realize that ANY Black person at a certain level of education and/or success had to be damn good to BE there in the face of unrelenting ignorance and obstacles that NO other person had to endure. To excell in this environment is simply a testimony to strength gained from the blood, sweat, and tears our slave ancestors.

Please, have you ever heard of affirmative action where otherwise unqualified Blacks get automatic set asides? AA also involves the lowering of standards. But then we have to talk about that IQ problem don't we?
As for transcripts, W, Kerry and Gore all released them. Ike and Carter had class ranking at their respective military academies.
Here's what interesting about Mr. Obama. He applied to only two law schools, Harvard and Stanford. Average GPA for the admitting class varied from 3.8 to 3.95. Even with the lowered standards for Black with affirmative action the GPA minimum was 3.6. We also know that at Columbia and Occidental the Dean's list was public record. Yet Barack Obama was never one of those students. It would also be interesting to know under what name Mr. Obama was enrolled. That's just for the beginning.
    Get it yet?

A significant part of academic achievement is related to environment and parentage.
