A couple of months ago I drove down I-95 to the Bowie/ Mitchellville, Maryland area, in order to visit an old high school friend from Jamaica. We try to link up every couple of years to shoot the breeze and catch up on old times.
I recently found myself reflecting on that visit after reading what president-elect trump had to tweet about the congressional district of John Lewis.
There I was in a neighborhood with million dollar homes inhabited by doctors, lawyers, and business owners, and the majority, if not all of them, were black. (My friend happens to be a college professor and his wife is a physician.) Now granted, this particular part of Maryland is not a part of the inner city per say, but we all know what trump meant with his tweet. "Inner-city" means black people, and so if it's black people there has to be all these issues with their quality of life, etc.
He assumed, because John Lewis is black, his congressional district had to be "horrible" and full of "burning" buildings, crime, and poverty.
Of course trump is wrong about that. Lewis's 5th congressional district is in fact one of the most affluent in Georgia. And good for the paper of record in Atlanta for calling him out for his ignorance.
Ironically, the poverty that trump describes is becoming more and more of a suburban and rural issue.
If the incoming president wants to really help America he would do well to stop disparaging blacks and the neighborhoods they live in, and start making an effort to help all Americans---- including the poor rural voters who supported him.
There are now over 22 members of congress who will be skipping trump's inauguration, and they have districts as well. Will trump, with his think skin, now take time out of what should be a busy schedule to trash each of them and the people they represent as well? I certainly hope not. But if he does, none of us will be surprised.

As far as some of your other observations. Yes, of course. There are pockets, (read small groups of people,) of poverty in the suburbs and neighborhoods of just about every major city and I would imagine smaller townships as well. Despite Newt Gingrich's noble efforts to blame all of this on the Obama presidency, it has been a well-known fact of life for at least the past twenty-five years that many are in need of assistance, be it EBT, SSD, unemployment insurance or otherwise. In my own community, it was thirty years ago that several churches banded together to form the Community Christian Service Agency to provide free food in the form of non-perishable goods to borderline families and individuals.

Since you folks love going back to slave times so often, pretending that you were damaged by it and under lash and rod, I'm sure you understand that only 2% of all settlers/colonists/Americans owned slaves, and that the overwhelming majority of white southerners disavowed slavery because they were third-world-level poor and couldn't get jobs because you cannot compete with free, forced labor. Millions upon millions and millions more white people have lived in generational poverty than black people, from the time we were just colonies to modern times. But because white corporate media makes it seem as if only blacks are poor--while pushing the idea that all blacks are victims, so why blame Trump for thinking so?--and that all whites are privileged, of course you selfish victim cultists don't understand these things.
The difference: Dense areas of black poverty 100% of the time equate to over-representations of crimes from petty larceny and auto theft to assault, rape and murder. Poor white areas, while obviously containing more crime than rich white areas, do not come anywhere close to the crime levels in poor black areas. Every inner city full of blacks is dangerous. In a poor mountain holler, the biggest threat to your safety is likely a bobcat or some dumb-ass redneck shooting an arrow up into the air because he's backwoods fucking retarded.
There's this meme in America, pushed primarily by well-to-do liberal whites, that being "white" means you live in a cul de sac or some other gated community and go to a great, all-white school and have the red carpet rolled out for your every step. This is not reality. Nobody gives a fuck about poor whites in the Oppression Olympics, and it's primarily because the American mainstream denies their existence, except for the adjoining meme of dumb white racist inbred hick southerners who hate dem niggers.
It's hilarious that the only time black people decide to even admit that white people struggle too is when a white billionaire stereotypes every black neighborhood as poor.
