Most categories of drugs are easier for criminal organizations to produce and smuggle than guns, and the demand for (and profitability of) drugs is far higher than for guns.

Right now, the black market for illegal guns is tied to the legit market for legal guns. There is simply no way that you’re going to get a handle on one without taking action on the other. Regulations on legal guns in many parts of the country are simply a joke. Any bozo can get one.
Furthermore, regulating guns at the municipal level or state level is not terribly effective. Better than useless, I suppose, but not by much. Municipalities and states don’t control their borders, so criminals can always traffic guns from areas with loose laws to areas with strict ones.

Most categories of drugs are easier for criminal organizations to produce and smuggle than guns, and the demand for (and profitability of) drugs is far higher than for guns.
It is possible to severely limit access to guns to the point only the worst of the worst criminals can get access to them (see the UK as an example). I’m not saying I favor a total handgun ban, but that is at least a feasible option.
Keeping drugs out of the hands of junkies is like emptying the ocean a teaspoon at a time. Totally hopeless. Public resources are better spent on prevention campaigns, rehab, and harm reduction (needle exchanges, availability of Narcan, etc).

Restrictions can help if they're smart, but prohibitions never have and never will. As Hunter Thompson said, every government since the Shang Dynasty has sworn they were gonna crush the opium trade, yet the price of opium on the streets of Singapore is roughly what it was in 900BC.

ReplyDeleteRight now, the black market for illegal guns is tied to the legit market for legal guns. There is simply no way that you’re going to get a handle on one without taking action on the other. Regulations on legal guns in many parts of the country are simply a joke. Any bozo can get one.
Furthermore, regulating guns at the municipal level or state level is not terribly effective. Better than useless, I suppose, but not by much. Municipalities and states don’t control their borders, so criminals can always traffic guns from areas with loose laws to areas with strict ones.
Wingnuts correctly point this out — but then neglect to mention that they are the bastards blocking gun control where it would be effective: the national level.
