Should the #ADOS movement be trusted?

TWEET METhere has been a raging debate on my twitter feed between folks from the #ADOS movement, and other blacks who consider themselves supporters of the Pam-African movement. For the most part I have tried to stay clear of it, because, frankly, this ADOS movement is new to me, and I wanted to understand a little more about what they are about, and why they are becoming so popular before I take a definitive stand.

For the record, I would not qualify as a true member of ADOS because I was born in Jamaica, and I immigrated to this country later on in life. I have always considered myself firmly in the Pan-African camp, because I believe that there is strength in  numbers, and all black people, regardless of where they were born, share a common bond and interests when it comes to the improvement of our race and out collective struggle.

Some of  my ancestors were Maroons, and I am very proud of that fact. They were sold into slavery from West Africa like the ancestors of  my African American brothers and sisters. They just happened to get off the slave ships a little sooner, and they fought the British like crazy for their freedom.  The folks in the ADOS movement do not consider me a part of the movement because my ancestors were not enslaved here in America, and that's fine, but I do need them to respect and understand the struggle of my ancestors as well.

I suspect that the folks who found the ADOS movement were more concerned with reparations and financial justice than anything else, and so there had to be a weeding out of the blacks who they did not consider worthy to benefit from whatever reparations the American government is willing to give out. This aspect of it seems reasonable. If your ancestors did not contribute to the building of America, you shouldn't benefit from the financial compensation that is due to your family.

My issue with the ADOS folks, though, is this: They seem to be more exclusionary than anything else, and there is a gleeful us against them projection whenever they write on message boards and engage other members of the African diaspora. It shouldn't be about that. I want no part of whatever reparations you they due, but I do want to see folks from my race thrive and be uplifted, wherever in the world that they happen to be.  .

I get it, some Africans (and Afro- Caribbeans as well) at times tend to treat their African American brothers and sisters as less than equals. They buy into the majority population's stereotyping of the African American as lazy and non-industrious. They think that they are different because they came to America for a better life and were, for the most part, accepted into white American society. They even allow some folks in the majority population to let them think that they are somehow different and better than their African American brothers and sisters. (I know some West Indians like this.)The folks who are down with ADOS have a right to be upset with these immigrants, because they are not about unifying, either. But I certainly don't want them to lose sight of the divide and conquer tactics that is so frequently used against us.

I just worry about the the end game, and who benefits from all this infighting among black folks. My twitter feeds have been like a war zone of late between these two groups.

Now, more than ever, is the time to come together around what unites us. The things that divide us should not take up so much of our energy.

I have my suspicions about some of the folks in this movement and their social media personas. Why now? Is this some kind of political disinformation movement spurred on by the Kamala Harris campaign for president? Her parents were immigrants. And so, like Barrack Obama, she is not 100% ADOS.

Still,  I also know that some of the people in ADOS are genuine true believers, and that they really want what's best for their fellow African American brothers and sisters.

I want what's best for them as well, but I don't want them to lose sight of the bigger picture, which is where they stand in the world itself, and how, ultimately, we can all be better off in the long run.

It matters less that these ADOS people can’t unite with other black Americans and more that they can’t unite with ANY other Americans, period.

There is zero support for slavery reparations outside this subset of the black community, and that is not likely to change. So this unrealistic agenda can only ever serve to undermine any actually achievable goals of the political left. I’m sure that the ADOS movement have gotten all excited by Cory Booker pandering to them in the Democratic primaries, thereby leading a bunch of other candidates to pander to them as well, to avoid “looking bad” to that particular black demographic. But the only effect of this will be that the eventual candidate will have to backpedal wildly, pretending they never said what they said and the press had merely misconstrued their words, after Trump tries to destroy them with it in the general election.

I see this commercial running today, about "ancestry", some black woman telling how she was shocked. I tell you, SHOCKED to find out her ancestors were from Congo, Cameroon, et.al. She just had to call her mother, and all her sistas about it.

What a joke. Remember when "Nubian" was the flavor of the day? Whatever happened to that?

Is there a point to this post? Or you just trying to be cute?

Being white, I don't feel like I have much room to comment on this issue, but I will say that it looks like it would be really useful to Republicans running for office in 2020, so please be careful about the veracity and sourcing of any information you get on the subject.

I always look at the timing of issues and ding ding ding, this became an issue as there is a divide and conquor strategy being played out in conservative circles. Think about how bad of a look it is on the Republican side when the Dems have not only a brotha but a sista running well in the primaries but they will lose their ONLY Blah person in the entire House. Not a good look in 2019. So watch out, expect more feces slinging.

“I always look at the timing of issues and ding ding ding, this became an issue as there is a divide and conquor strategy being played out in conservative circles.”

The Russian efforts to subvert the 2016 election — both the hacking of the Clinton campaign/DNC, and all the targeted disinformation on Facebook — mostly sought to exploit resentments and divisions among the political left (Bernie fanatics versus Team Hillary, blacks versus whites, etc.) to try to get Democratic voters to sit home sulking and not vote on Election Day.

It worked.

It’s worth pointing out that those divisions already existed. The Russians didn’t create them; they just exploited what was already there. And a lot of those divisions are frankly dumb.

“Unity is always hard to achieve with a white male in the White House”

Not true in general; however, the white male currently occupying the White House doesn’t want any kind of national unity.

Unless, of course, it is white unity against everyone else, achieved through defaming all non-whites as frightening monsters who must be expelled from the country.

Now you have the most racist dumbfuck ever in the Kremlin annex pretending to reach out to the same people he says ought to go back to Africa. He must truly believe Blacks pay less attention to his racist shithole mouth than his racist shithole followers.

I am a first generation American with Haitian parents. I understand the "gleeful separation from non- ADOS" vibe that rubs you the wrong way. But, I can also say... it's not that they are separatists in all things panafrican. They are focused on the task at hand, which is reparations for American Descendants of Slavery. It makes sense. The US government owes them. For Haitians, the French government would owe us so on and so forth. The reason there's a clear clamor for calling out non-ADOS black in American is because ADOS have realized that when a black person seems to align with the oppressors more so than the black agenda, it has been uncovered in many cases that they are not actually ADOS, like Kamala Harris for example, or they are biracial... basically they do not truly identity as ADOS or care to further the ADOS agenda. As a pan-africanist and American born citizen, i support the ADOS movement wholeheartedly. It is easy for me to see reparations for ADOS as a win for the African diaspora.

I don't see why it shouldn't be trusted. It's very, very real. What they are saying is that American Descendants of Slaves, and only American Descendants of Slaves, should receive reparations.

You might want to watch these popular vloggers and hear what they have to say on the matter. Yvette Carnell of 'Breaking Brown', Esq,Antonio Moore of 'Tone Talks', Tariq Nasheed.

ROTF LMAO! Funniest post I have read in a long time. I'm 5'2" tall, and I weigh 109 pounds. You can use just about all the adjectives you want to insult me, but fat is not one of them. LOL! And I am friends with three black women who are quite beautiful and aren't a bit fat.

The reparations agenda is the black community's equivalent of Trumpism.

White Trumpfascists are obsessed with winding the clock back to the much whiter America of 1953, where they are convinced they'd be happier than they are now, while the ADOS fools are obsessed with undoing the events of slavery, which happened 150 years ago to OTHER, long-dead black people.

Both of them are stuck in the past, pursuing an impossible ideological vision that they delusionally believe will instantly solve all their problems at a single stroke. I guess this feels easier to both of them than committing to the hard grind of political compromise and negotiation here in 2019 America.

The federal government cannot be trusted to administer reparations. How to determine who has which race? (Family trees are incomplete and inaccurate; DNA testing proves that race is mostly a social construct; and color swatches _are_ racism.) Administering reparations would require compiling a database of who is which race; a database obviously abuseable when - not if - it falls into the wrong hands.

It's a trap.
