The n-word conundrum.

TWEET MEIt never fails, there is always someone in the majority population who has to write and pontificate about the use of the n- word, and why black folks can say it and non- black folks can't.

Here is a writer from The Blaze. (Of course she is a conservative, they are the only ones who obsess about being able to use the n- word. ) And this is her take from her twitter account on the subject.

"America is weird. There's this one word (you know the one) that's used casually ALL THE TIME in music and movies, and in entire communities, with no problems. But if you have the wrong skin color and say that word, regardless of context - EVEN IF IT'S A QUOTE - you're canceled.
There's this tension right now where people want black culture (including slang) to be ubiquitous, but still off limits to non-black people. But culture doesn't work like that. If people are exposed to culture, they adopt it. Deal with it."

Lauren thinks that America is "weird" because she can't freely use the n-word. Go figure.

Here is the thing, Lauren. If a group of people choose to use a word that has been used against them in the past, it is their right to do so. I have Italian and Irish friends, and I would never use the G or the M word  whether around my Irish and Italian friends or not. It is not my word to use. And yet, they use these slurs among themselves, and I am perfectly fine with that. They can do it, but I cannot. It's really that simple.

Women call each other the B word, Gays call each other the F word, but they are allowed, because they are in the class of people using the word among themselves. I, on the other hand, cannot use those words, and I am totally fine with that. If you are not, well then you deserve to be "canceled". (Whatever that means.)

Finally, here is another thing, black folks are not trying to push their culture on anybody, so I am not sure who the "these people" are that Lauren is referring to. Irish and Italian culture is "ubiquitous" as well, and yet, there are no opeds written about not being able to freely slur these groups because they slur each other.

Lauren wants black people to "deal" with others using the n-word because, in her words, American culture demands it. I hope, for the sake of America, that we don't ever get to that place.

This is a matter of politesse, and therefore mostly irrational; for politesse is arbitrary, and determined by the latest fight, rather than by reason. That makes rote memorization necessary, which is why people resent it when the rules change quickly. People can adapt rapidly when politesse is defined in rational terms.

In this case the rule is: you may call your own group whatever you want to, but you should address people of other groups only in polite terms. Slurring a fellow member of your group is a privilege of tribal membership, earned by historical suffering. It is symbolic theft of the oppressor's power; a kind of magic spell.

All of this is logical and/or human; but which precise terms are slurs and which are polite is arbitrary, and requires rote memorization. Also, who is your group? That's a matter of identity, which is mostly illusion.

Tribal self-slurring is a delicious privilege, but also a dangerous habit; for like the walls of a ghetto, it walls out the others... but also walls in the tribe.

I would have to ask what exactly she wants to say using that word that she can't say without using it, and why.

I would have to ask that if, of course, she was making a good faith argument about the use of language in the manner of the excellent explanation given above by Paradoctor.

    But she's not, is she?

She's just trying to portray herself as some sort of victim.

Well, how about this: We have the first amendment guarantee against the government abridging free speech, so she is free to say almost anything she wants without government intervention.

What we do not have, and should not, is a freedom from any consequences to the speech we choose to employ.

I, for instance, am perfectly free to use a lot of high-volume insults in the Hell's Angels clubhouse, and am just as free to get my fool ass kicked for doing so.

In the manner of her argument, I could say that the Hell's Angels do in fact use insulting language among themselves (or at least they used to when I knew them), so American culture demands that I be afforded the same privilege.

And the answer to such an absurdity is that I'm free to go through prospects and try to get a patch and be a member so as to gain such privileges, and then discover that no such privileges exist and I would still get my ass kicked for running my mouth without considering the circumstances.

Which, from what I can tell as a white guy, is also true of the word in question. There is no free pass for its use. There exist situations where its use is condoned by those present, and situations where its use is not.

The fact that she doesn't feel like she has access to those situations is her problem, but she wants it to be everyone else's instead.

Or more likely she's just an entitled cunt saying "Look at me, I'm so smart."

The problem is that it's deemed a firing/beating/cancellation offense to use "nigger" even when singing/rapping along with a song.

Blacks want whites to consume their cultural products, but demand the power to determine how that consumption is practiced.

The solution is for whites to stop consuming black culture.  Do not buy hip-hop.  Do not listen to it.  Stay away from the "concerts" (people get shot at them regularly, that's just common sense).  Shun the people who consume that dreck.  If they want a cross-cultural experience, listen to Rammstein or Babymetal or The Hu instead.  Listen to country, there isn't anything in it you're not allowed to sing along with.

What would happen to Kanye West if whites boycotted him?  He'd be history.  I'd love to see that happen.  Imagine all the rappers begging their white fans to come back, telling them that "it's OK to say nigger".

Imagine the former fans saying "no".

Not really. Most rap, movies and shows produced by blah folks is totally ignored by whites anyway. Go ahead and boycott blah culture and music and see what happens. Basically the same thing that happened back in the day, whites who want to be cool will sneak across the tracks to get down with the cool kids. Suburban white guys who want to be edgy will always attempt to be cool by consuming blah products. The Rolling Stones? Jeff Beck? The Beatles? Eric Clapton? C'mon man, we all know what time it is.😂

Not all of country is bad. Jason Isbell, the Highwomen, and the entire genre of bluegrass, which is chock full of monster players and much more have a lot to offer.

Now the business of country music is a whole different matter.

Something I have noticed in the last forty years is that most musicians, regardless of genre, are OK as people. With some extravagant exceptions, of course, but by the numbers, in my experience, it holds.

The folks who make their money by selling music, on the other hand, tend to have a lot more creeps among their ranks, and germane to the topic, are the ones who tend to make the decisions about "controversial" content, such as the word under discussion, and its use as an attention getter for the purpose of selling music.

I can only think of two instances of white musicians using that word appropriately in songs (although I don't claim to know every one), one by Elvis Costello in "Oliver's Army" and one by Frank Zappa in "You Are What You Is" and there are likely people who would disagree with that assessment and feel like they shouldn't have used it.

And note that both of those songs are forty years old and times have changed since 1980.

Just curious, does this sonata have any improvised lines or time changes in it? Some of the hallmarks of jazz are the freedom to improvise and somewhat ignore standard musical rules. It was a feeedom felt by the inhabitants of Treme because that was one of the first blah middle class areas in the country and a sense if freedom was expressed in the music by turning established rules on their heads. While there are many influences jazz is a unique art form.

Gambling White Woman and Anonymous Jazz Guy. I'll have to aska you to give anon his due. It is quite safe to say that the bold melodies and arpeggios of Ragtime originated on German and German-American pianos from men that had studied old Louie. Out of 32 Sonatas, I only know a handful. But I played a very musical and elegant rendition of the Waldstein Sonata in my day. Who else but Beethoven explored and defined the harmonic dictionary of the piano? As I type I'm listening to this Sonata 32 and I am hearing the same type of bold melodies played over a striding bass that I learned in Sonata 21. That's the building blocks. A celebration of harmonic tonality in its purest forms. Some wandering and roving to occur in diminished chords and arpeggios.

I thought that the link provided by anon was just a guy swinging the Beethoven, but now I'm not so sure, he may have just been excerpting it. Because I heard that same sixteenth note triplet thing that begun your link. Amazing.

Clearly Beethoven did more than any other romantic composer to try to explode the rhythmic possibilities of piano music. But he could only foreshadow the true volcanic eruption of music and rhythm that occurred in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the U.S.

Damn right anon. It was the same guys playing the Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart going on to make their own musical forms. Good call.

    Pilot,

The music of Beethoven does not generally contain time signatures that include prime numbers, but Beethoven and Haydn and Mozart before him drew upon the rich tradition of the recitativ which began as a vocal coloratura in opera music and later became anything from a free-form piano cadenza to a wildly flying ornamental passage on a trumpet. Recitativs are replete with rubato and can be characterized by wildly fluctuating tempos and accelerandos accompanied by grand allargandos.

NYT has an interesting story, unfortunately it is behind a paywall, that tells of a school security guard fired for repeating the "N" word he asked a student to stop using towards him.

"Yes it is being free. Free to make your choices and take your chances."

    That's disingenuous at best.

Like telling a Russian in the 1930's Soviet Union he's free to criticize Stalin, he just has to accept the consequences of spending the rest of his short life in a Gulag in Siberia.

You feel free to criticize Trump and accuse him of thousands of crimes because that narrative is supported by power. Everything you say conforms completely with the agenda of the dominant elite.

Try pointing out who controls the media and our politicians and you'll find out how quickly you can be socially ostracized and economically crushed.

What does Bush v. Gore have to do with impeachment?

Impeachment is the constitutionally specified remedy for presidential misbehavior, deriving its legitimacy from the same document that created the supreme court, which was given in that document no jurisdiction over impeachment.

It might be called upon to adjudicate certain details of the process, as it was in Nixon's case, and I ask you how that turned out for him?

Congress was given the sole power of impeachment, and even this supreme court is very likely to rule as such, especially since the most rabid and Trumpy of the right wing justices are "strict constructionists", who believe the letter of the constitution must be adhered to.

They could be as dishonest about that as the rest of the Republicans, who don't give one hair on a rat's furry ass about the running of the country and only care about winning, but as they are already supreme court justices, the edge has been taken off of their lust for power.

They could still just decide to be assholes like in Bush v. Gore, but the likelihood of them getting to that opportunity isn't great.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. You can say something that offends someone greatly and they attack you. This is what I meant by considering the consequences of your speech. Stalin's Russia had no free political speech. In this country political speech is legally protected by our Constitution. But there is no such thing as total free speech unless you are the only person left alive on the planet.

Please tell me why you want to be free to insult other people without consequences? That doesn't seem to be a very noble crusade to me.

This isn't from some hokey pro-Trump site. It's from the Constitution. The Dems doing all their inquiries "behind closed doors" is just wrong.

    mike from iowa said...

Wingnuts did closed door meetings when Obama was potus. Drumpf lied when he said Paul Ryan respected America so much he wouldn't issue a subpoena (ezxcept for the hundred plus that were issued under Ryan).

With wingnuts circling the swamp drain to protect drumpf, any bit of information allowed behind closed doors would be fast walked to the kremlin annex by Devin Numbnuts.

CQ, there are any number of sound constitutional reasons not to force victims to face the perps in court and the judge needs to weigh that very carefully. This is especially true of kids and their rapists and other molestors. It would be like your side to traumatize children in courts. Afterall, your side could give a fuck what happens to a forced birth fetus after it is born, but you don't.

You are getting ahead of yourself. The current activities of the House involve an investigation of the president's wrong doing. It is not a trial yet, therefore there is no requirement for the "accused face their accusers." That will happen if and when the House actually passes the impeachment indictment, that is, charges Trump with high crimes etc., then due process kicks in. In the meantime Trump should stop whining and suck it up like everyone else.

"The Dems doing all their inquiries "behind closed doors" is just wrong."

Every impeachment investigation is done behind closed doors, just like a grand jury, so the witnesses are not allowed to make their stories agree.

The reason the house is holding its depositions behind closed doors is because it, unlike the impeachment investigations of Nixon and Clinton, has to do the investigation itself because Barr's corrupt DOJ won't let the FBI do it.

So due process is indeed not being followed, not by the committees in the house, but by the DOJ and FBI, who are only working to protect Fergus and not doing their damn jobs.

Anonymous at 4:10 PM (the preceding text IS a link, which you can tell because it's colored differently) posted a link with the text "originated by none other than Ludwig von Beethoven."  All you had to do was click it.

Do you have a link, smart ass? If so, please post it.

OK, so you meant the video with the piano playing as your proof that Beethoven invented rag time? Sorry I was expecting a reliable reference from a respected music historian.

I don't see how this sonata proves your point. Rather it shows how versatile Beethoven was. All great musical composers have incorporated some of what has come before them. That's the nature of the beast. Have a nice day.

are that smart pretty much everything their showing
about Shuri doesn't even remotely come close to matching
(a.k.a, e.g, i.e reflecting real life circumstances of her race
and ethnicity this is just some afro centric BS I love Marvel
an all but this takes the nonsense cake and its so tiresome
that they've created a narrative that some how the African
tribe of wakanda was able to do this garbage by using one
material to advance themselves magically out of no where
ahead of every one else except (New Attilan). while the rest
of man kind was an or is using various types of sources
and resources to progress themselves an didn't need to
rely on one item to be ahead of everybody except (wakanda
New Attilan) unlike a certain group that can't even close the
    achievement gap in real life

let alone be the first race to do some thing first mostly before
any one not to mention the astronomical amount of excuses that
they make for themselves when it comes to the ghettos, slums, projects
on why that looks the way it does.I mean look at Detroit and Haiti, Sub Saharan
Africa. in fact notice that they are the only race that only needs to have "stop the
violence rally" do you see that in any other societies an communities another thing
is when it comes to typhoons they are mostly the ones that loot and don't help out
when it comes to tragedy's also I should add they are the only race that keeps blaming
their actions, failures to another race even when that particular group that they don't like
is no where to be around an found and still manage to come up with the lamest excuses
    to blame them for it.

Jazz comes from blues which came from gospel that originated with slave field hollers. If you watched the Country Music series you would know all American music country folk and rock came from race music or black music. Or if you studied the origins of American music particularly as a musician you would know this. So much stoopid & lying on the internet. White people think life begins & ends with them. The banjo which was a key instrument in country music is an African instrument. The drumming & poly rhythmns in Black music is rooted in African culture. Just because brass instruments are used in Black music doesn't make any of it European. This is a good example of people who think by virtue of having white skin and a penis they can talk straight out of their behind and expect to be believed.
