The return of Logan's Run.

Logan's Run
The next time you see right-wingers getting on their soap-box to preach about the value of life, and the pro-life movement, and true believers shout with righteous indignation against the pro-choice movement,  you might want to remember what happened last night on FOX VIEWS.

"As the coronavirus continues to spread in the United States, forcing people to stay in their homes and causing an economic downturn, Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Dan Patrick, joined Tucker Carlson Tonight where he made headlines by suggesting we get back to our normal lives to save the economy even at great risk to the country’s senior citizens. Patrick, who turns 70 next week, believes it’s up to older Americans to take that risk.

“Tucker, no one reached out to me and said, ‘As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’ And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in,” Patrick said, later adding, “My message is, let’s get back to work. Let’s get back to living. Let’s be smart about it, and those of us who are 70-plus, we’ll take care of ourselves.”

Sorry grandma and grandpa, you have lived your life, it's now time to take one for the team. Forgetting, of course, that thousands and thousands of you are raising your grandchildren. But hey, businesses comes first, and we have to get the economy back open and running again. (Remember when the right was up in arms about  imaginary Death Panels?)

This narrative from Lt. Governor Patrick is now manifesting itself because the president of the United States said yesterday that he wants the country open for business again. This pesky virus is hurting his election chances and he is getting claustrophobic sitting in the White House and not being able to go golfing and holding his rallies with his MAGA cult members.

trump declared that he disagrees with the doctors about how long we should be locked down and staying way from each other, and he believes that we can all go back to business as usual. He believes that we should just be careful about how we interact with each other. trump even believes that there is a miracle cure for this virus, and not surprisingly, the medical professionals disagree with him about that as well.

The scary thing about trump's declarations and his ignorance, is that a man has actually lost his life because he listened and believed in trump's pronouncements.

It's sad, but the Lt. Governor of Texas would call what happened to the poor man in Arizona a useful sacrifice.

Box: Regular storage procedure. The same as the other food. The other food stopped coming. And they started.

    Logan 5: What other food?

Box: Fish, and plankton. And sea greens, and protein from the sea. It's all here, ready. Fresh as harvest day. Fish and sea greens, plankton and protein from the sea. And then it stopped coming. And they came instead. So I store them here. I'm ready. And you're ready. It's my job. To freeze you. Protein, plankton...

This is a horrifying development. To think that we could switch to to the “herd immunity” non-solution (i.e., just let everyone get sick), which the British toyed with before abandoning it after realizing it was unworkable ...

The problem here is that Trump still mostly has his eye on his reelection chances. Someone needs to sit him down and explain that he has no reelection chances:

“Don, I know you’re thinking that if you boost the stock market and blame China a lot, then you could get reelected. But that’s not going to happen. At this point, lots of people are going to die, you’re going to get blamed no matter what, and Biden is taking your job. It’s over. The best you can aim for is to make sure the history books don’t describe you as a monster. Minimizing deaths will help with that.”

If he cannot be convinced, then he must be removed.

I’m just saying that adapting to prevent global pandemics won’t entail retreating from global trade. The economic costs of that would be untenable.

Trump can’t even accept the economic cost of a couple months of COVID stay-at-home orders needed to prevent millions of American deaths. He’s already whining about it and suggesting maybe it’s okay to kill grandpa to keep the stock market humming. How would he (or any other political leader, for that matter) tolerate the truly immense economic pain of trying to permanently wall off the United States from the rest of the world? It won’t happen.

I think they are more afraid that some of the concessions they are forced to make for COVID-19 will stick, long after the crisis ends. For example, some businesses are having to give sick days to their employees who did not have them before. Many employees are gaining the right to work from home. The longer the crisis lasts, the more likely those rights become permanent. Not to mention that the need to keep everyone healthy and virus-free bolsters the case for more radical measures like Medicare4All.

They really, really don’t like that.

So, yes, I think this is an additional motivation, besides Trump just living in the fantasy that he can let grandpa die, re-inflate the stock market, and all will be well for his re-election.

Yes, Trump's fault. Last I heard, New York is in the US, the country Trump is the president of.

The US federal government, which he heads, has the best resources for fighting disease epidemics. But Trump did not mobilize it in any meaningful way, because he convinced himself that he could keep COVID-19 outside our borders simply by shutting down flights from China. When that didn't work, he had no plan B.

What I had a problem with was this:
“When that didn't work, he had no plan B.”

It’s all well and good to TRY to keep a highly contagious and deadly disease out of your country, but you cannot guarantee this will happen. Almost no country has, in fact, succeeded in keeping COVID-19 out. Soon, it will be literally everywhere on earth. And yet, Trump apparently didn’t do any planning for what the next step would be if it did take hold in the US.

Hell, he still gives no sign of truly comprehending the scope of the problem and what needs to be done!

I would never go to a black doctor.

I believe that there are many brilliant black people, and many great black doctors.

But I also know that affirmative action means that many blacks are admitted to medical school who shouldn't be there.

At the lowest range of acceptance criteria, MCAT scores of 24-26 and GPAs of 3.00 to 3.19, less than 5% of whites and Asians gain acceptance to medical school. With the same scores, 60% of black candidates do.

If you go to a white or Asian doctor, you can be pretty sure they earned their way and know their stuff. If you go to a black doctor, you are flipping a coin.

Without AA, I'd have no problem seeing a black doctor. With AA, forget it.

The shocking degree to which the left's response to the pandemic has been flat-footed and tone-deaf surprised even me. But perhaps it shouldn't have. Shouting "Racism! Sexism! Bigotry! Homophobia!" solved so many problems for the left for so long that it was inevitable that they'd become overly reliant on it until they finally hit a major problem that it *couldn't* solve, at which point they would find that they had forgotten *any* other possible response to *anything* that might come up.

And that's exactly what's happened - their frontrunner for the presidential nomination seems to have shut down and gone into hiding, and their congressional leaders have handled things so badly that even their party faithful have turned against them.

Alinsky warned them to vary their tactics every so often so they didn't get stale and the party didn't get overly dependent on them. But they found one that seemed never to get old, and ran with it until it disaster hit. Much like Custer, who knew only one tactic - a full-speed charge - which worked well for him until one day it didn't, and an Indian walked away with Custer's scalp tied to his belt.

    Trump Administration Froze Pandemic Models

March 24, 2020 at 10:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 122 Comments

“The Department of Homeland Security stopped updating its annual models of the havoc that pandemics would wreak on America’s critical infrastructure in 2017,” Politico reports.

“From at least 2005 to 2017, an office inside DHS, in tandem with analysts and supercomputers at several national laboratories, produced detailed analyses of what would happen to everything from transportation systems to hospitals if a pandemic hit the United States.”

“But the work abruptly stopped in 2017 amid a bureaucratic dispute over its value, two of the former officials said, leaving the department flat-footed as it seeks to stay ahead of the impacts the COVID-19 outbreak is having on vast swathes of the U.S. economy.”

It’s not good politics or economics or anything else if his deadline isn’t informed by the science but is just something he pulled completely out of his ass. Which is the case here.

Trump wants to relax quarantine restrictions by Easter. That’s not going to happen. Virus cases won’t be under control until sometime in May at the very earliest. And that’s under very optimistic assumptions.

Trump may just be talking shit here, and state governors will probably ignore him in any event, but if he did somehow get his way, a lot of people would die as a result.

My OB/GYN is a black woman. In 2014 during my annual checkup, she insisted that I get a colonoscopy, which I did. As a result, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Two weeks later I underwent surgery. When I got home from the hospital, I sent her flowers with a note that said, "Thank you for saving my life."

That was exactly six years ago and I am cancer free. So from my prospective, your post is just grotesque. So don't go to a black doctor. That leaves more of them for us who aren't bigots to go to.

Of course important jobs should be left to the competent. The awful performance of our incompetent president during this pandemic supports this conjecture. Determining in advance who is competent is not always clear. Skin color, ethnicity, sex, or national origin, is not a reliable index for determining competency.

  93. In the days of the Silk Road, plagues would start in China, then infect Persia, then Northern Italy, then everywhere. That pattern has recurred this time. What a curious coincidence!

A modest proposal: that every year this country set aside, via government, about 1% of its income in a sovereign fund; to be tapped for emergencies such guaranteed income for all citizens for the duration of any pandemic lockdown.

Another modest proposal: that we no longer say that a person "has" a virus, but the reverse; that the virus "has" the person. Or rides, infects, occupies. Also, a person does not "give" the virus to another person; instead the virus "jumps" from one person to another. Or moves, transfers, spreads. This transfers blame from the human prey to the microbial predator. It's galling to attribute agency to a life-form so low that it's a stretch to call it a life-form; but discredit where discredit is due. We humans are in this together, and infighting is stupid, so blame the virus.

From my perspective, it is completely rational.

We have a medical system structured to ensure competency of medical professionals through school admission screening, demonstration of skills and knowledge, and licensing restrictions.

With AA, those provisions are tossed aside for racial favoritism.

If you have two populations of physicians, one that has a 95% confidence level in terms of competence, and one that has 50%, it only makes sense to limit your exposure by choosing your doctor from the group that has had to demonstrate their ability by objective, relevant standards.

I agree it's not fair to the black doctors who would have made it anyway without AA, but that's just the reality of the situation.

As I recall from my work in higher education AA is used only to determine admission to underrepresented student, not for grading students' work or competency.

After the fall of Vietnam, many so called "boat people" youths were admitted by Affirmative Action guidelines to the university where I worked. Some went on to medical school. Do you include them in you judgement of incompetency because they came in through AA? Or it just Blacks that aren't competent? You attitude seems to be illogical.

A JBHE Check-Up on Blacks in U.S. Medical Schools

There is widespread agreement on the urgency in the United States of training more black medical professionals. But the bad news is that instead of an increasing number of blacks in medical schools, recent years have seen a significant drop in overall African-American enrollments in U.S. medical programs. The good news is that African Americans are making good progress at the nation's highest-ranked medical schools. And contrary to public beliefs, blacks who are admitted to these top medical institutions are graduating at a very high rate.
This past September the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Work-force, an independent public health effort funded by a grant from W.K. Kellogg Foundation, released an ominous report warning of an impending healthcare crisis in minority communities. The principal problem identified by the commission was the shortage of black and other minority healthcare providers. The Sullivan Commission, chaired by Louis W. Sullivan, president emeritus of the Morehouse Col-lege of Medicine and former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, concluded that while blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians make up more than 25 percent of the U.S. population, they are only 9 percent of the nation's nurses, 6 percent of the doctors, and 5 percent of the dentists.

Also, blacks make up only 4 percent of all faculty members at American medical schools. But even this figure greatly overstates the picture because a very large number of these blacks who are called faculty members are practicing physicians who are affiliated with the medical school but who are almost never in the classroom.
Given these findings, it is important to assess the progress, if any, of blacks in American medical schools. Fifty-five years ago in 1950, only 133 blacks graduated from all U.S. medical schools. And the vast majority of these earned their medical degrees at the historically black medical schools at Howard University and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. These black medical school graduates made up a mere 2.4 percent of the 5,553 U.S. medical school graduates that year. In the late 1960s affirmative action programs became common at large numbers of traditionally all-white U.S. medical schools. As a result, the number of black medical school graduates increased more than threefold from 153 in 1969 to 571 in 1974. This progress slowed but continued steadily for most of the 1980s and 1990s.

I guess you missed my point. Credentials are awarded on the basis of performance, not on the basis of admission. AA only gives a person a foot in the door, not passing grades, diplomas, or credentials. Legacy rewards are another topic entirely.
