Election thoughts.

I'm going to write a few words about the two governor's races that everyone seemed to be watching yesterday.

In Virginia, the republican candidate, Glen Youngkin, beat a man who is- let's just go on and say it- not the most likeable guy in the world, and he did it by distancing himself just enough from the former guy, and utilizing what I am calling the new Sothern Strategy to his advantage. Yes folks, in case you haven't been paying attention, critical race theory has become the Willie Horton of 2021 and beyond for right wing politicians. Let's just forget the fact that it's not even taught in high schools -or any other schools besides law schools and some advance college courses- but it is such a convenient tool to scare the right people if you know what I mean. And it worked.  Youngkin  styled himself as an approachable suburban dad.  He is worth 300 million, and this is his first political office. We will be watching where this goes.

Meanwhile, across the bridge in New Jersey, it's still too close to call. Although the Democratic candidate, Phil Murphy, is looking more and more like he might squeak out a victory. National pundits will try to say that the fact that this race is this close is a big blow for democrats. But just remember this: The last time a democrat won back to back terms as governor of New Jersey was 1977.

Finally, there were Judicial races here in  Pennsylvania, and Republican candidates won up and down the ballots for all the statewide Judicial seats. They did it because republican voters were motivated and came out to vote, and Democratic voters were not.  These races are important, too, because the courts will determine whether a lot of these new laws being pushed by Republican state legislatures are constitutional.

On a personal note, a good friend of mine ran for a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and she lost because her opponent went negative with false misleading ads leading up to the election. It's a shame, too, because Marie McLaughlin, when I practiced with her in the same division, was an excellent lawyer, and she has been a terrific Superior Court Judge during her tenure as well. She did not deserve the sleazy way her opponent dispatched her by way of negative and misleading ads. That's just not me saying this, the Pennsylvania Bar Association agrees with me.  But such is politics in modern day America. It's scorched earth, and it's tribal, and if you you take the "high road" you will be crushed. Even in a race for the highest judicial office in a great American state.

Journalists are engaging in "reading tea leaves" with regard to the Virginia election. Does it portend doom for congressional Democrats in 2022? Hard to say.

Midterm elections are usually not great for the party whose president occupies the White House. The actions of the sitting president will tend to outrage voters from the opposing party and help mobilize them to go the polls.

But there are other trends that are dragging down the Democrats in national polling right now. First, there's the economy. In some respects, the economy is doing well, rebounding robustly from the COVID-induced recession. But at the same time, it's not doing well. Supply of goods cannot rebound as quickly as demand for those goods, so there are shortages and skyrocketing prices. Also, a lot of the workers that left the workforce during the lockdowns have not yet re-entered it, so labor shortages are exacerbating the shortages of goods. There is frankly very little Biden can do to fix it, even though he is taking the blame right now. However, it is highly likely this will have mostly sorted itself out by the time the next elections roll around. The economy could look very different in a year.

More seriously, left-wing voters are becoming demoralized by congressional Democrats' inability to get anything done. They were told the Democrats were in control of Congress and great things were going to happen! This exciting lefty agenda was going to get passed! They failed to check the fine print, which says that the Democrats have the absolute barest minimum control of the Senate chamber, and given the antiquated Senate rules, that means that win isn't really much of a win.

Everything that Biden and the majority of Dem members of Congress want to spend money on is getting "SineManchin-ed." I don't really see what is going to break the logjam. Those two obstructionist senators don't appear amenable to compromise or negotiation, and at this point just seem like they're working for the other party. Will that situation have improved a year from now? I'm not getting my hopes up.

Women are faced with a choice of Republicans stripping them of their right to reproductive health care, and the criminalization of abortion whether spontaneous or induced, and Democrats endangering their daughters by making school's single sex changing rooms and toilets into mixed sex facilities. Studies clearly show that mixed sex facilities are more dangerous for women and girls, so we must conclude that the intent of the POTUS day one Executive Order directing gender identity beliefs be equated with biological sex in Title IX applications is intended to drive girls out of sports and schools. In the name of equality, of course.

  35. Someone said that Democrats spend all their focus on policy but stink at salesmanship, i.e., making those policies known to the public. Republicans are so thoroughly in bed with the 1% that it should be easy for Dems to define themselves and win elections. They need to dispatch the culture wars, too, of course, to mock an jeer at the latest thinly-disguised race baiting that is this latest bogey man, CRT. (How many times can racism be re-bottled and re-sold?) Democrats should have the wind at their backs, but they still sound apologetic and scared that their true nature will be somehow "found out." Of course part of the problem is that "liberal" and "fair and balanced" news networks are no corrolary for the total propaganda network that is Fox--but ADULT DISCUSSIONS should be a selling point for the Dems rather than something to hide from. The answer for the Dems is NOT to disguise or water down what they believe in but sell it proudly--we're for the TRUE benefit of the people, dammit, with the track record to prove it.

He's trying to do his part to try to stop the assault on voting rights. But the DOJ probably won't get anywhere with the right-wing supermajority on the Supreme Court.

The only real option lies with Congress. But laws protecting voting rights can't advance in the Senate without jettisoning the filibuster. And jettisoning the filibuster can't happen because of the usual suspects, Sinema and Manchin.

    It's a grim situation.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "It's a grim situation."

Maybe not. If the Dems can take a hint, which they usually can't, and start trying hard to deliver on their promises it can energize their base and even pick off a few swing voters who for now have to choose between a party that is insane and a party that is all talk. There is always the law of unintended consequences. One of my favorite stories was my friend who traveled to Kenya and was talking to school-aged kids who were really studying hard because they wanted to one day become President of the United States. LOL! Had to thank Fox "News" for that one.

Pelosi has raised the white flag of surrender to Sinema and Manchin. She’s allowed the infrastructure bill to pass in the House, in the name of allowing the Dems to at least say they’ve gotten something done, but that means she’s lost all leverage to get the Senate to pass Biden’s Build Back Better bill. So the latter is probably dead, which will enrage left-wing Democratic voters.

And hey, who cares about climate change provisions in the BBB bill? It’s only the Earth that’s getting destroyed. What do we need that for, anyway?

Consider that the driving force behind the global mandates consists of the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Both of these entities have been very vocal about climate change being the world’s biggest problem and population control as the solution. The actual mortality rate from Covid is extremely low and emergency use authorization for experimental mRNA injections was never justified. This is a global propaganda campaign by the world’s wealthiest people. Using Covid and the great reset, they plan to greatly reduce the population and enslave survivors under global communism. Prepare accordingly.

The actual Secret Service code names for the Trump family are:

    Trump: Mogul
    Melania: Muse
    Ivanka: Marvel
    Don Junior: Mountaineer
    Eric: Marksman

Can you tell that they picked them themselves?

They picked them themselves, because they’re narcissistic, corrupt assholes. And because style and symbolism mattered 100% to them, and running the government competently didn’t matter at all.

"Shit, Mitt Romney ran on cancelling Big Bird in 2012, but there I go remembering stuff again."

To be fair, Mitt wasn't actually anti-Big Bird, per se. He was anti-spending-tax-money-on-PBS because he was pro-cutting-rich-guys'-taxes. Which is an understandable position for him to take, as Romney's a rich guy who thinks everyone less rich than him is a bum.

This, however, was not as entertaining as when Jerry Falwell passionately denounced Tinky-Winky:
"He is purple - the gay-pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle - the gay-pride symbol ... As a Christian I feel that role modelling the gay lifestyle is damaging to the moral lives of children."

Personally, I suspect this was a sinister plot to murder all the liberals in America by causing them to die laughing.

  90. Reason 10 billion why I hate magats....

One Republican willing to run interference for killer Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg is Representative Greg Jamison (R-12/Sioux Falls), who signals that he doesn’t want to get into impeaching public officials over a couple of piddly traffic violations:

Pollsters hired by South Dakota News Watch in October found that 66.8% of South Dakotans surveyed support removing Ravnsborg from office following his conviction of two misdemeanor traffic charges stemming from a crash that killed a pedestrian in September of 2020.

But neither of the charges now on Ravnsborg’s record — a lane violation and texting while driving — amounted to criminal culpability for Joseph Boever’s death. That’s why support for impeachment isn’t as resounding among some House members, who question whether two traffic tickets are grounds to oust South Dakota’s top prosecutor.

Fucking magats conveniently forget the POS AG struck and killed a pedestrian on the shoulder of the highway while texting.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Anonymous2:02 PM

“… Killer Kyle's judge seems prejudiced against the prosecution.”

The prosecution has two big problems.

First, they want to present Rittenhouse as having gone to Kenosha with the goal of killing protesters simply for supporting a political cause Rittenhouse doesn’t like. They have no proof of this, and the judge won’t let them argue anything related to this.

Second, video footage and testimony suggest Rittenhouse was attacked by protesters. The prosecution was unable to present any evidence to prove he attacked the protesters first, so they were unable to knock down his self-defense claims.

    Who didn’t see this coming?

Manchin may delay Biden social spending plan over inflation

Now Manchin is claiming inflation — a short-term phenomenon — is a reason for torpedoing a long-term social spending and climate change remediation bill.

It isn’t. This is just an excuse. Manchin’s real motivation is that he is a Republocrat, and doesn’t want too much money spent on helping “undeserving” recipients, nor does he want anyone to stop burning that sweet, sweet West Virginia coal. And now that the House have passed the infrastructure bill, progressives have lost whatever minimal leverage they had over him, so at this point, Manchin doesn’t give a shit about anything anymore.

  124. Rittenkiller claimed he was hired to protect a used car lot, then he later claimed he was there to clean up grafitti, when all he managed to do was murder two and wound another. Looks like wounded paramedic had his hands in the air when he was shot by the killer.

I have no doubt he will get off on a technicality. The judge is bound and determined to abort this trial one way or another, imho. Rittenkiller will learn not to leave any victims alive to dispute his claims of self defense.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Anonymous4:32 PM

“Looks like wounded paramedic had his hands in the air when he was shot by the killer.”

Unfortunately, one of those hands was holding a pistol. Again, this is not great for the prosecution. Their witness’ testimony probably helped Rittenhouse.

"Problem is he was out after curfew with an illegal weapon. He was there to find trouble and trouble found him."

The problem for prosecutors is that neither being out after curfew nor his illegal possession of a weapon invalidates the legal right to self-defense.

And "looking for trouble" isn't an actual statutory offense, just a vague accusation.

The guy, who is still at large, who was swinging a bat with a nail in it should be 6 feet under right now. The FBI needs to put him on the 10 moat wanted list and all LEO’s need to be after this guy because he intended to mortally wound one of their own. Sad Republicans are downplaying this. Yeah no I
would need proof what I mean
by that is I would need to see how
they did it. I'm just not going to take you're word for it
considering first of all if black people were able to do that all this
time than why do they keep making spears an not other diverse, variety
of weapons besides the spear and used a cows hide an turned it into a shield
not to mention a lot or most of them are and or were naked dancing around a fire
in grass skirts or the other way around a lot of them or most were naked. if they were
able to make busts, statues which they clearly didn't they wouldn't be living in huts
eating mud cookies, mosquito burgers an having famine also they would have been
able to built houses that are one, two, three or more stories high and a mansion to go
along with it. lets not forget if they are an or were able to do these things they will have
been able to build sky scrapers like you see every where in the world same goes for bridges
like the Manhattan bridge, Golden gate bridge but you don't. has anyone ever seen and all black
carpenters crew building a house or a mansion let alone both an all black construction crew building
sky scraper's, bridge's, infrastructure's, water pipe line system's, power plants yeah I don't think so because
if they were able to do all those things that I mentioned they wouldn't be complaining, grunting, groaning, moaning,
cherry picking, nit picking and blaming their actions, failures, issues on white people an pulling the race card or any
other card that is known, unknown to man for that matter and committing black on black crimes, black on white crimes,
black on yellow crimes, black on brown crimes nationally, internationally.
