"The paradox that defines this moment."

As democracy takes its last dying breath here in America, articles like the following from author David Graham, writing for The Atlantic, must be shared whenever possible.

Sadly, fifty percent of the people in the country could care less.  Some, because of partisan tribalism. Some, because the people putting our democracy in danger looks like them (see racism), and some, because...well...they are just typical Americans, and they can't see past the next sound bite (or the latest trend or gadget) to feed into their own selfish desires and immediate needs.

Article:

"The good news is that President Donald Trump’s attempts to defy the results of the election and remain in office keep falling flat. In court after court, judges have ruled against the Trump campaign and tossed out its lawsuits. Today, Georgia certified Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the state’s presidential electors, after a federal judge yesterday rejected a prominent conservative lawyer’s suit seeking to block certification.

The bad news is that as Trump’s chances grow dimmer and deadlines near, his attempts to steal the election and subvert democracy have become more dangerous. This is the paradox that defines this moment: As Trump’s odds of success decrease, the risks that his ever more extreme efforts pose are increasing.

In the first hours and days after the polls closed, the president argued that if all the legal votes were counted, he would win. Now he has moved to trying to have votes thrown out—asking state legislators or courts to just ignore the balloting altogether, flout the will of voters, and simply make him president. Incredibly, he and his aides have not even bothered to offer some other pretense. They are now openly explaining, in media accounts (albeit anonymously) and in court filings, that the point is to disregard voters’ wishes.

“President Donald Trump’s strategy for retaining power despite losing the U.S. election is focused increasingly on persuading Republican legislators to intervene on his behalf in battleground states Democrat Joe Biden won, three people familiar with the effort said,” Reuters reported Thursday. “A senior Trump campaign official told Reuters its plan is to cast enough doubt on vote-counting in big, Democratic cities that Republican lawmakers will have little choice but to intercede.”

As usual, Trump is doing all this in plain sight. He summoned the Republican leaders of the Michigan state House and Senate to the White House today for a meeting. Both men, though allies of Trump, have publicly rejected the idea of legislators throwing out the vote and selecting a slate of electors, and legal experts agree that state law precludes the move—though it will be interesting to see what the leaders say after their meeting.

Earlier this week, Republican members of a board of canvassing in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, threatened not to certify the election over minor discrepancies, then reversed themselves. Trump then reportedly called one of the two Republicans, who tried (unsuccessfully) to reverse their reversal. They insist the president did not pressure them. Meanwhile, Trump’s legal team is trying to achieve the same result by slightly different means in Pennsylvania, asking a court to throw out the vote and declare the president the winner.

A bizarre press conference yesterday at the Republican National Committee headquarters showed how chimerical the president’s legal case is. Rudy Giuliani harangued the press for not reporting that he has evidence of fraud, then refused to share the evidence with reporters. (Sidney Powell, another attorney, wouldn’t even share the supposed proof with friendly TV host Tucker Carlson, presumably because it doesn’t exist.) The lawyers offered a farrago of conspiracy theories—mysterious truckloads of votes arriving at counting centers, poll workers being instructed to ignore rules, shadowy foreign voting-machine companies futzing with the count to hand the election to Biden.

These ideas have all been comprehensively debunked, but they also make no logical sense, whether taken together or individually. Why would Democrats bother stuffing the ballot boxes with paper ballots if they could just change the totals later? Why would they bother fixing the presidential election while allowing Republicans to have a great night in House, Senate, and other down-ballot races? (The Pennsylvania suit asks that the presidential result be thrown out but has no problem with the commonwealth certifying all the other results that depend on the same ballots.) Why did Trump improve his performance relative to 2016 in the cities where fraud allegedly took place, even while losing ground in suburban counties where his campaign isn’t disputing the tallies?

In another case, Trump lawyers argued that the Michigan results are invalid because the number of votes cast exceeds the number of voters in the precinct. But as the Trump-friendly Powerline notes, the lawyers appear to have confused Michigan and Minnesota precincts.

The Trump campaign’s initial strategy this month was to contend that some votes that were cast by mail should not have legally been allowed. This argument lacked grounding in law and sought to disenfranchise citizens who had followed the rules in casting their votes, but at least it offered some consistency and logic about which votes shouldn’t be counted. Since that failed, the president is now simply insisting without evidence that there is fraud and hoping that judges or legislators will toss the results wholesale in certain counties or states.

The Trump team’s tenuous claims would be laughable were they not so dangerous. First, there is always the outside chance that some enterprising legislators might actually try to discard votes, which would be a miscarriage of democracy. Second, the flimsiness of the claims is probably irrelevant. Polling suggests that huge portions of Republicans believe the election was rigged, and no number of debunkings is likely to convince them otherwise—this is motivated partisan reasoning, not thoughtful analysis. Besides, once the president has decided to place all his chips on simply circumventing the will of the voters, the strength of his argument no longer matters. What is important is brute strength. Luckily, he doesn’t seem to have it.

Nonetheless, most Republicans remain distressingly slow to challenge Trump’s claims. Early on, GOP lawmakers contended (anonymously, of course) that there was little harm in letting Trump throw his tantrum, since it would come to naught. This was a bad argument then, and it has not improved with age. As the president’s claims get more and more far-fetched, and his attempt to steal the election grows more overt, most Republicans are still remaining on the sidelines.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appears to have concluded that Trump’s strategy probably won’t work, but that if it does, that’s fine. The few exceptions include the usual suspects, including Senators Mitt Romney and Ben Sasse. Other Republicans have tried to have it both ways, declining to condemn Trump or call Biden the president-elect, but also saying the administration should allow the transition to proceed, just in case. None of this rises to the challenge of the moment. Former President Barack Obama seems to have it right when he says these officials are going along with the subversion “not because they actually believe it, but because they feel intimidated by it.”

Although Trump is deeply unlikely to succeed in his attempted theft, he’s revealing weaknesses and softening up the system for a future authoritarian, who, as Zeynep Tufekci has written, is unlikely to be as bumbling as he is. Defeating Trump in an election was a straightforward enough task, and defeating him in court has proved even easier. But if he succeeds in undermining the system badly enough, it will mean that defeat at the polls just won’t matter next time." [Source]

The author is more optimistic than I am.  Yes, tfg's efforts are "falling flat" for now. But for how long? His rabid base and cult like followers are still out there. And now, thanks to being under the umbrella of a major political party, they have hijacked the halls of power.

All we can do now is wait for the inevitable.

That's basically what they are saying. Not "We need to offer up something that more voters will support" or "Maybe the Democrats are onto something we should try and co-opt" but "NO! NO! NO! MAKE THEM STOP!" and "Q-anon!" and "We will seize the voting machines because they have to be wrong if we didn't win."
All this after the "Let's scare the living daylights out of them." didn't have the desired effect.

Thing is trump and his ilk have conned and duped teh stupid. One thing we know about stupid people is that they eventually end up screwing up so badly adults have to come in and fix things. I’m almost to the point where I want Republicans to win everything just to see things burn. America is in decline, should we rip off the bandaid or just pull slowly?

  4. Sear Field,
I am not able to analyze this article without knowing when it was written. I Googled David Graham at the Atlantic, but I could not find the article in question.
It seems to me that recent events are trending toward Trump's being in a whole load of trouble and It's my opinion that a lot more Americans are paying attention than were before. There have been several wake up calls including the Dobb's decision and Trump in danger of being charged with espionage.
I don't think Americans are much less involved in current events than they ever were. According to independent research, in general only about 1 in 5 (20%) of the voters paid attention in past times. The other 80 percent relyed on their political-junkie friends and relatives, their pastor - priest -rabbi or life-long party affiliation to choose whom they will vote for.
Perhaps I am delusional, but I feel somewhat optimistic about the future of our country.

Probably there will be sporadic violence and disruption when Trump is totally disgraced and I hope finally sent to prison where he belongs. But I don't believe that most of the MAGA crowd is ready to face bullets from the United States Military. They have only shown courage when they out number their victims. And there are millions of us liberals out here with guns who will gladly assist the U.S. Military if needed.

Increasingly, I feel like the danger isn’t from Trump. He appears to be in a hopeless doom spiral now. Consequences for his evil actions may finally be catching up with him.

The major concern is that he has permanently radicalized the Republican Party. The “cultural conservatives” (i.e., the racists and the theocratic loons) have taken over completely. Some new party leader could replace Trump, one who is equally vile and fascistic but also smarter and more competent. A buffoonish Hitler-wannabe could be replaced with actual Hitler.

That new leader could be someone like DeSantis or someone else that has not yet risen to prominence.

The question becomes, can the remaining fifty percent recover from the infestation of these invasive species? Elections are what American democracy is built on, and if you hand over the power to ignore them to overwhelmingly Republican state legislatures for the purpose of keeping only Republicans in high office, sure that's partisan, but it's also a frontal attack on small d democracy.
In which case, to be pro American democracy is to be partisan.
    Not tribal, just sane.
Plus, the whole "tribal" as a derogatory accusation is a product of the goddamn both siderist media which needs there to be a valid argument from both parties so they can cover them without appearing biased. Pro tip to the media: If one politician tells you it's day, and another tells you it's night, your job isn't to report the controversy, your job is to open the goddamn window and see if the sun is shining or not.

This is noteworthy because DeSantis did the exact opposite, back when he was a congressman. When Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast, he voted against federal aid for the affected people, unless that aid was “paid for.” (And by “paid for,” you can assume he wanted Democrats to shaft poor people by cutting food stamps, or something dastardly like that. Because that’s what Republicans always want.)

But when Florida gets hammered by a natural disaster, is he insisting that HIS state will accept no federal aid money until it has been “paid for”?

In fact, you're a bigot. You hate gay people. At least that's according to Billy Eichner, the writer, producer, and star of 'Bros,' which tells the story of two gay men, who fall in love. It seems a bit self-serving but let's hear Billy out. Despite a $22 million production budget, an estimated $30 to $40 million promotional machine, Eichner appearing on every imaginable media platform and largely positive reviews from critics, 'Bros' only managed to take in a measly $4.8 million on its opening weekend. Long story short it bombed. Eichner's lashed out on Twitter by blasting America's moviegoers for failing to recognize his genius and, of course, for being hateful monsters

I'm sure Eichner's right that homophobes definitely won't go see his movie.

But he's also kind of wrong, in that, whether the movie is genius or not, non-homophobes also might not go. The "rom" part of a gay romcom probably isn't going to do it for you, if you're straight. And the "com" part might not make up for that, no matter how funny the jokes are.

Perhaps gay movie romances just have an inherently small audience of mostly gay people, and there's only so much you can do about that?

"Those numbers reflect a lot of hard work by a lot of people. There are a lot more success stories in Chicago that also need to be heard."

Those numbers also reflect the ending of "COVID crisis mode."

Crime spiked because of the negative impacts of the COVID lockdowns on the economy and people's mental health. Since the lockdowns ended and things have slowly gotten back to normal, crime has started falling. This is a nationwide problem. Not a Chicago problem, not a big-city problem -- it's an everywhere-in-America phenomenon.

Idiot wingnuts will no doubt respond to this by saying "Aha! So the lockdowns weren't worth it!"

Wrong. COVID killed a million Americans in 18 months WITH the lockdowns. Did you want to go to 4 million dead to avoid the lockdowns? Maybe five million? It would take an insane amount of crime to murder as many people as unrestrained COVID could have murdered, in the period before vaccines became available.

So, yeah, the crime spike sucked (and continues to keep sucking), like all the other costs of lockdown. But it was still totally a price worth paying to avoid the absolutely horrific death toll that would've happened if we'd done absolutely nothing. And it's also worth noting that so much of that sacrifice could have been avoided if Trump had shut the borders immediately and ordered lockdowns immediately when COVID first started spreading. The lockdowns could have been far shorter and less painful for everyone. But Trump didn't do that, because he is an evil moron and one of this country's worst presidents ever.

It's funny as hell, but it is very difficult to watch for more than a minute or two.

Another thing I know to be true? Gay is hot!

There, I said it. I love gay cats. They are the coolest. But when Beer:30 rolls around on Friday afternoon, you don't really want to step out and party with these guys. It can be fun to hang with gay cats. But usually in a social situation, they have to play it fairly close to the chest so as not to offend their straight friends.

Michael Richards ... the Seinfeld actor? Lol, no, he isn't telling the truth here, because Michael Richards never said any of the things you quoted here.

I don't know which revolting web forum you grabbed this from, but Michael Richards never needed to defend himself in a court case at all, let alone to defend himself with some kind of "white genocide" speech. Michael Richards was never charged with a crime, because this is America and hate speech isn't a crime here. Richards did trash his career pretty thoroughly by flipping out and making racist insults against some black dude that was heckling him during a standup routine, but nobody actually tried to send Richards to jail.

No, this is a hateful rant by some garden variety Nazi lowlife that someone later falsely attached Michael Richards' name to. Snopes debunked this 15 years ago, but apparently it's an unkillable zombie lie that will live on forever on the Internet.

As a side note, what is up with all the endless idiotic wingnut quotes that are falsely attributed to famous people on social media? Horrible quotes from obnoxious a-holes, now repackaged as coming from witty celebs or esteemed political statesmen.

    They all look like:

The test creators were trying to identify high-achieving children who didn't begin with advantages like exclusive private schools.  In other words, they were being NON-discriminatory on any trait except... ability.

How do you account for the fact that N.E. Asians do better on standardized tests than Whites, if the tests were designed to discriminate against non-Whites?  Answer:  you simply cannot.  Oh, you can be an idiot and claim it, but that makes you an idiot.

    Grabbler2 chimes in:

It's very difficult for white test creators to develop accurate tests for any culture that isn't WASP.

Then why do the achievement tests predict college performance so well, and why do N.E. Asians outperform Whites on the tests?  (The N.E. Asians fall behind when asked to think creatively, but they are spectacular at rote tasks.  Nobody has developed a test which can measure "out-of-the-box" thinking; think what such a test would be required to measure, and how you could measure it.)

After working in higher education for many years, think accurate testing for intelligence is a fool's errand.

The college entry tests (SAT and ACT) used to do a very good job of predicting grades in college classes.  They actually discriminated FOR blacks, by predicting they would do better than they actually did.  Why would anyone put a student, of ANY race, in a course of study where they were guaranteed to fail?  Who does THAT serve?

Well, it serves the quota-checkers in the admissions office.  But we shouldn't have any of those.

Why not?  Your ancestors learned to make it through winters with no food growing, survived ice ages, invaded rather than being invaded, and fought successfully against both the forces of nature and the toughest customers evolved among their own kind.  Sub-Saharan Africans were still in the stone age when Europeans colonized them and brought civilization to them.  If your ancestors were just worthless, you're worth nothing either.

What's there to be proud of? For at least the last 1000 years, whites have been killing whites and any other people who got in the way of their quest for money, land, and power.

This is utterly laughable.  In just the 5th paragraph, it quotes the academic moron Ibram X. Kendi as follows (emphasis in bold added):

"We still think there’s something wrong with the kids rather than recognizing their something wrong with the tests," Ibram X. Kendi of the Antiracist Research & Policy Center at Boston University and author of How to be an Antiracist said in October 2020.

I'll spell this out for you if none of you get it:  Kendi cannot distinguish between the possessive "their" and the word "there", which in this case should be the contraction "there's" meaning "there is".

Kendi is the moron who claimed that all acts are either racist or anti-racist.  Okay, tell me whether the following acts are racist or anti-racist:

    1.  Putting on clothes in the morning.
    2.  Eating a bowl of soup.
    3.  Pouring a glass of water.
    4.  Breathing.

The idea falls apart within seconds of thinking about it... yet Kendi wrote an entire BOOK on it, which got PUBLISHED!  This only means that the publisher and editors are morons too.

Any piece which quotes Ibram X. Kendi except to show just how moronic Africans-in-America are can only be used as an example of what never to do.

Really? You have documentation to prove this or are we to just assume you have insight into what the test creators were thinking?

Three default white conservative male urges:

    1. Whaaaaa whaaaa whaaaa everyone is against me.

    2. I’m always right even when I’m wrong I’ll just get louder.

    3. Since I’m mediocre in every way I’ll just claim that my race is superior even though I’m a personal failure and I’ll blame my failures on others.

These weirdos with the whole white pride thing are funny. Ok, be proud to be white son, no one here gives a shit one way or the other but you feel the need to come here and bore us with your fake boasting. Why is it none of you have any personal accomplishments to brag about other than being white. Well good for you, now you can join all the other meth addicted fools in jail and the maga crowd that will be in jail for stupidity. Congrats son!!!!! We are so proud of you.

    "Why not?"

Maybe because being white is a characteristic and not a right. Maybe because as described, it ignores the content of ones character. Maybe because violence, as presented in the use of the words invaded, tough and fought, should be a last resort.

"...that's what humanity has done for time immemorial."

Again with the, "the only history that matters is white history" song. Your interpretation seems to miss the point being made.

This type of thinking that is moving this world into "the ghetto."

If you knew what you were talking about, you would know that college entry tests predict only about4% of the variability in college success rate. The leading indicator is high school GPA.

Various federal and state programs have shown that even students with low high school GPAs can become successful if student friendly learning centers are present on the campus.

It saddens me that your inability to spell my screen name correctly indicates that you are intellectually challenged.

Why not? Did you not understand my comment? You think that since people have been killing others for thousands of years, that makes it OK? As for you beliefs of how wonderful whites are for having survived, every living human on the planet survives because of human cooperation, not on killing others.
Furthermore, I think pride is something that should be felt by a person because of his or her own behavior and accomplishments, not because of skin color or any other superficial trait †hey may possess.

We get it, someone made a simple mistake that was not caught by the editor. Happens all the time,

Yes... when both the writer AND editors are incompetent.

I mean if you read a lot you’ll see it. We do appreciate the idea that an entire premise is disregarded because of a small grammatical mistake.

It puts the failed educations and thinking of the entire production chain on display.

Per the FBI's Universal Crime Reports, the black share of known-race murderers rose from 56.5% in 2020 to 60.4% in 2021.

Blacks are roughly 12.4% of the US population.

The USA would be far better off without any blacks.  At all.

Now extrapolate to the world... if your mind can encompass it.

I read all the time. Sometimes I finish two to three books per week and I do not see the grammatical error in question here unless I am reading comments on my computer. Occasionally I may see a small grammatical error in books, but that is quite rare.

    Abstract

Studies have reported reduced natural SARS-CoV-2 infection- and vaccine-induced neutralization against Omicron BA.4/BA.5 compared with earlier Omicron subvariants. We conducted a test-negative case–control study evaluating mRNA-1273 vaccine effectiveness (VE) against infection and hospitalization with Omicron subvariants. The study included 30,809 SARS-CoV-2 positive and 92,427 SARS-CoV-2 negative individuals aged ≥18 years tested during 1/1/2022-6/30/2022. While 3-dose VE against BA.1 infection was high and waned slowly, VE against BA.2, BA.2.12.1, BA.4, and BA.5 infection was initially moderate to high (61.0%-90.6% 14-30 days post third dose) and waned rapidly. The 4-dose VE against infection with BA.2, BA.2.12.1, and BA.4 ranged between 64.3%-75.7%, and was low (30.8%) against BA.5 14-30 days post fourth dose, disappearing beyond 90 days for all subvariants. The 3-dose VE against hospitalization for BA.1, BA.2, and BA.4/BA.5 was 97.5%, 82.0%, and 72.4%, respectively; 4-dose VE against hospitalization for BA.4/BA.5 was 88.5%. Evaluation of the updated bivalent booster is warranted.

Self-evidently false. If ni663rs were popular with White women, there wouldn't be any White women.

Only White men can sire White women.

Evidently, you don't know much about genetics. I recommend you do some research using unbiased sources. My sister-in-law is white even though he father was black.
I'm sure it would pain you to know that quite a lot of white Americans carry black genes. Some of the descendants of Thomas Jefferson are examples of this.
