Render unto Caesar.

Julius Caesar styled himself as a servant of the republic, claiming to speak for the people even as he disregarded laws and norms to govern by caprice. The Roman republic did not survive him.

The second Trump administration has revealed American Caesarism in nearly full bloom. Despite ambitions to fundamentally change the course of the country, this administration has no real legislative agenda. Instead, the president governs by executive orders, emergency decrees, and extortionate transactions, using his power to reward his friends and punish his enemies. He’s launched foreign military adventures and full-blown wars seemingly based on personal whim, and has made the military a political prop and a tool for domestic law enforcement. With Congress sidelined and the courts reluctant to check Donald Trump’s excesses, America has been left with what some legal scholars have described as an “executive unbound”—and with a president who threatens to supplant the republic in all but name.

Trump’s most fervent supporters justify his approach in terms reminiscent of Caesar’s. The White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has remarked that “the whole will of democracy is imbued into the elected president.” Many Republicans argue that Trump’s policy preferences deserve support because he has a “mandate,” and they heap scorn on the “unelected” judges who have had the temerity to rule against him." {More}

The excerpt above is from an article in The Atlantic written by  Gregg Nunziata. In it he writes about how the legal right has spent decades empowering the presidency, and how they must now reckon with the monster that they helped to create. As someone who has dedicated his life to studying, practicing, and understanding the law, I shudder at what I see happening in the legal profession. The highest court in the land is controlled by a majority that cares more about the man who put them there than they do the law and upholding the Constitution.

Mr. Trump is allowed to govern the way he does, because his handpicked court and the feckless right-wing politicians who fear him, will do nothing to stop him.

I hate to say it, but it's only going to get worse. The war in Iran will not be ending anytime soon, and I fear that by the end of this summer America will be closer to a literal civil war than we could have ever imagined. It's gotten that bad. And the man who is singularly responsible for all this division and turmoil is none other than Donald J. Trump. America's own version of Julius Caesar.

"Men really believe what they wish to be true"

"If you must break the law, do it to seize power"

Those two quotes were attributed to Caesar, not  Mr. Trump. But at this point, who can tell the difference?

The Virginia Supreme Court has OFFICIALLY DENIED Democrats’ move to reinstate the 10D-1R Congressional map — refusing to pause the lower court order, which BLOCKS certification

GREAT! A legal win!

This means the map stays blocked while legal challenges play out.

Do the right thing and STRIKE IT DOWN FULLY .

Florida redrawing + this map being DOA would be absolutely enormous for the midterms.

One of the reasons the Roman Empire failed was due to mass migration.

The Romans became less Roman.

The more unpopular Trump gets, the more he will flail around and do insane things. I see he is back in “attacking ideological enemies” mode, to distract from the dumb fight he picked with Iran, his mounting failures on the economy, and the growing backlash to his deportation agenda.

He’s launched a bad-faith investigation of private contractors who’ve defrauded the government in Minnesota, which will not be used to deter fraud but instead to defame Democrats and black people (since several of the scammy contractors are Somalis). He’s also started an absolutely ludicrous prosecution of the SPLC, which is apparently designed to please America’s bigots, since nobody else wants this.

And now, today, I noticed that he’s resurrecting his silly vendetta against James Comey for allegedly threatening him by spelling out “86 47” in seashells (via a frivolous prosecution), and his silly vendetta against Jimmy Kimmel for mocking him on TV (via abuse of the FCC’s regulatory powers).

Things will only get dumber, because lashing out is how Trump copes with failure, and he fails a lot.

Dan Pfeiffer: “For DeSantis’s map to work, he is betting that Latinos will stick with the GOP at 2024 levels. There is not much evidence to support that bet.”

“The worst-case scenario for a gerrymandered map is that it produces a worse result than the old map. That’s called a dummymander.”

Trump's vanity is very annoying. I've been thinking about applying for a new passport, since mine expired a while back, and it's completely obnoxious that will now have to get one with Trump's stupid face on it.

Since this clown seems bent on slapping his name on every part of the federal government like he owns it, Democrats should actively take revenge once he is out of office. Not only should his name be taken off of literally everything, but I think they should build an intentionally insulting, literal anti-monument to Trump. Something like a giant bronze Trump baby on the National Mall might be appropriate. Or maybe erect a museum of the worst leaders in history, with Trump featured alongside, like, Hitler and Pol Pot and Vlad the Impaler.

More seizure than Caesar, really.

Nah, that wasn't Obama, it was Nixon. He exploited cultural fears and resentment for electoral gain. Nixon deliberately appealed to Southern white voters and working class citizens and widen the gap between those who supported social progress and those against war. Trump is just a seven times seven result of Nixon's strategy. The sin has multiplied. Then again, white folks is just crazy, warmongers, and messy. A group of people who like to start a mess and keep it going 24/7 and project their behavior on others. They act like they don't know how to live and let live. At this point, I ignore them. Let them do them. As long as they don't invade my space and mess with me and mine I don't care what they do.
