What's next, Sarah on a Wheaties Box?

"WASHINGTON - Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council...."

TEN DOLLARS? That's a lot for a box of waffles. Where do I start with this story? Some of you have been e-mailing me and commenting here about this story. And you wondered what my take would be on it. Some of you thought it was purely satire, as Bob DeMoss, one of the creators of the mix said; and you thought that I would see it as such. Well, it's a funny thing about satire: it's kind of like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart described pornography: "I know it when I see it". Sorry folks, this wasn't satire, it was racism. Maybe I can't give a fair take on this subject, since my disdain for the people who were buying up and selling the Obama waffles is so strong. But that's just the way I see it. There is just too much history with these folks for me to give them a pass.

But then I hear that they didn't only offend my peeps by playing off the negative imagery of Aunt Jemima----that Mammy that A-merry-cans love so much--, but they offended Muslims on the top of the box, and Mexicans on the back. On the back they had an image of Obama in stereo typical Mexican dress, which included a sombrero. The picture was above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" and it said you can serve "four more illegal aliens...while waiting on these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language? " Nice! You gotta love those "Family Research Council" and American Values folks, they sure know how to fire up their base. I bet those pancake boxes were flying out of the booth. And I bet there will be a booming Internet business for these two creators for weeks and weeks to come.
"The Obama campaign declined to comment"
Of course they did. We can't have the "O man playing the victim card now can we. That's the beauty queen's job.

The Obama Waffles box in addition to the group earlier this year who was selling bumper stickers and pins with the line "If Obama is President will we still call it the White House?" indicates to me that the GOP isn't interested in hiding the fact that they cater to ignorant, racist, White people.

Where is the comment from the McCain camp that they will not support such language against Obama?

Just as the right wing said Obama should denounce Wright, I feel McCain and friends should denounce these peddlers of racist sh*t. If they don't denounce, then they are supporting racism and racist actions and this needs to be pointed out through all the appropriate means.

Fred Thompson's speech was racist too. "They think their entitled and it's their inheritance." He made is seem like it was a race war, which it isn't, but that is what he wanted poor whites to think.

They've been using and exploiting poor whites since slavery and back when this country was founded. The elistist throw them out the scraps off the table to make them think that they are better than blacks, but in reality the elist opinion of them is just as low, but you can't get them to see that, and yes, ignorance has a lot to do with it.

The founding fathers carefully constructed the laws to keep the wealth in their hands and make sure that it would passed down from generation to generation while they exploited the average citizen for free labor or slave wages. It was never intended for the average citizen white or black to get as far as they did. Nor did they intend for them to have a decent education either. However, now the real elite feels threaten because more and more young people, black and white have been educated and understand this.

The elite doesn't see it as we're tired of the corruption in the White House and them taking advantage of the average hardworking citizen, senior citizens, disabled, and poor people just so they can profit off of our backs while we are struggling to get by and barely making it.

There is a lot McCain's campaign needs to be called on, but he should be called on it by the people. He needs to hear our voices loud and clear, I'm referring to WE the people. The reason McCain's campaign is playing dirty like they are is because they are trying to get Obama to react and figure out a way to twist things around and set him up. It's time for the people of America to wake up.

Obama's pansy ass wanted to just eat his waffles when he needed an excuse to avoid questioning. Waffles are not pancakes.

No one but people looking for racism forced a connection between Aunt J and Obama's waffles. Yall keep this shit up. Everything is always racist. If it is so racist, and no one will ever change, then why do black folks keep on expecting change? Which one is it? Hope that things will change, that there are non-racist white people or white people are just racist and will never change and we black folk will just cry, cry, cry, cry.

This seems to appeal to the same kinds of morons who think that Sarah Palin is qualified to be more than a dog catcher.

While there is a small amount of humor to the package design, and it is certainly less offensive than many other outright racist and inappropriate messages out there, it is at the very least disrespectful.

But whoever said that these mental midget republicans care one wit about showing respect?

The quintessential example of this was when these same people (who just happen to think they are so clever and so cute--don't you think? and whose own IQs probably make Bush and McCain seem like Einstein by comparison) at the 2004 republican convention went around sporting their Purple Heart band aids. Never mind the fact that John Kerry was in Viet Nam and was wounded several times fighting a war that they and their cowardly ilk (past tense of Elk?) decided to sit out along with their hero George W. Bush who was AWOL and Dick 5 deferments Cheney.

These people deserve Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin to make their lives worse. Because they are too stupid to know it.

@gwpriester "While there is a small amount of humor to the package design, and it is certainly less offensive than many other outright racist and inappropriate messages out there, it is at the very least disrespectful."

Sorry, racism doesn't come with a sliding scale: it's either racist or it's not.

And it's all offensive to those of us who have been on the receiving end of it.

Calling it "disrespectful" is tantamount to spraying perfume on some, and allowing the other to reek to high heaven.

I, for one, did not find a "small amount of humor" in it.

This crap saddens me. It tells me just how far the country has come and how much farther it has to go to liberate itself from all this reactionary, glory-days bull when these things were done with great applause and approbation by the racial majority.

I find humor in a good joke. The best jokes don't demean, and belittle others, but show the comic in a less than flattering light.

From that perspective, the joke should have been on them.

In all fairness, the rest of your comments were spot on.

However, the Republican's so-call Christianity reminds me of a few scriptures:

Sure, the douchebag that made the product is gonna make some money, but he won't be laughing all the way to the bank when his little stunt backfires in his face.

Could you imagine having a big tent set up somewhere near Galveston, feeding these waffles & pancakes to the victims, rescue workers and cleanup crews??

I personally would add, that Obama should put inventor of the "Obama Waffles" on the spot, and ask him to donate all profits to the victims of hurricane Ike.

Most are women, and I can assure you that what she attempted to do is being vigorously discussed in many a meeting, and seminar.

Someone commented earlier that Sarah was "scary."

She is scary because of her willingness to place her conservative, evangelical religious beliefs front and center, and use her power to recreate the world in that image.

If she ever becomes president, she will seek to destroy Roe v. Wade, and any other legislation, or Supreme Court decisions that don't coincide with her conservative religious views.

Yeah, she's scary, but I find McCain no less scary--he picked her.

Hey!Granny keep holding it down. John McCain is no longer pretending to tell the truth. There is no more straight talk express they are openly, laughingly, declaring that they are not going to talk about the issues and are simply going to lie and swift-boat their way into the White House.

They are mean, venal evil people, and 46% of the American public doesn't seem to care! Granny I believe it will work because there is clearly a race element working against Obama.

Chuck Todd said because of the race factor it's put Obama at a seven point disadvantage on election day.

He illustrates this by looking at Wisconsin and Michigan, two states where Obama should be doing better, states that John Kerry won and where democrats and democratic issues are well received. Among the 12% of undecided voters in these states, there is a large number of them who are looking at Obama and shying away.

These are people who support the Democrats, who believe the country is going in the wrong direction, who are opposed to the war, who are voting the democratic ticket right down the line for congress, state elections, and the senate.

But when it comes to Obama they can't bring themselves to pull the trigger. They agree with every policy he has outlined but they still can't bring themselves to vote for him. You might say "well, he just hasn't sold himself well enough," but that would be a ridiculous statement.

If there is one thing Obama has done better than anyone else in this campaign it is sell himself. You could say that they have been confused by all the negative campaigning and lies about Obama that have come out of the right-wing slime machine (and which Hillary's people contributed to), about him being a black nationalist, about him not being Christian, about him having three Muslim names, and you'd be right:

but all of those things have a racist element to them. I've said all along that Obama would have to get an extra ten percent to beat the hidden racism among some white voters, and now it looks like he won't get it.

Chuck Todd says that Obama needs to have at least 48% in battle ground states on the Sunday before the election to combat the racism factor.

All of which leads me back to where I started: this is no longer an election about ideas. It has once again been turned into a culture war.

They are somehow managing to convince people that a man who grew up with a single mother and lived on food stamps is more of an elitist than the guy with nine (and yes it's nine, not seven) houses. Lies! Lies! Lies! Let's face it, this guy who went to Columbia and Harvard is already at a disadvantage.

To me the Democratic National Convention represented my America, the real America, not the 1950s Leave It To Beaver all white fantasies of the Republican party. Why the Democrats weren't prepared for this I have no idea.

I've been paying close attention to the polls and have noticed how they've been manipulating the numbers by taking some off of Obama's and putting them back as if he never had them. I watched them do that during the primaries as well.

Just think back when the primaries were going on how they kept changing the numbers needed to win the electorate vote and changing the battle ground states needed, but it didn't work. They are trying their best to discourage folks from going to the polls and pulling every scandalous, dirty, low-down, conniving trick in the book.

They know that Obama is gonna win this election, and they plan to do everything no matter how crooked it is to block him from winning, but it is not going to work.

GrannyStandingforTruth said...

Obama had 244 electorate votes and McCain had 224 and it was 70 electorate votes up for grabs. It was like that for the past couple of weeks, Obama only needed 26. Today when I looked 6 of those votes had been taken off and added back onto the 70. However, McCain number still remained at 224.

THINK ABOUT IT! The votes are being manipulated in popular and electorate. I watched them do that during the primaries as well. That is why they kept changing the board so fast, but I kept count as well on a printed calculator. They were deducting votes off of Obama's side, but it didn't work in the end.

Let me tell you how this election is going to turn out. There will be more than one election. The first one will be Nov 5 and it will be a tie, but it is going to cause so much civil unrest, until they'll have to hold another one. The next President will be a Democrat. However, America is going to be bankrupct because of all the natural disasters and banks failing left and right. The truth about what Bush really did to America is going to come out. Right now, some of it is surfacing but not all of it has come out yet. America has been sold out.

I worked on Clinton in 92. Remember Bill was dead last behind Bush AND Perot before the convention.

Stick to the issues Obama. You can't win getting messing with Palin & co. The Repubs can't run on issues...they have nothing to say.

You notice the media was all over McCain/Palin and their lies recently. Of course the Repubs claim the media is elitist and liberal. However, when Karl Rove is saying McCain's ads have gone too far (lying about Obama's record and statements) that is pretty deep. You've got to get really down and dirty to offend Mr. Rove.

I'm still amazed at how many code words this election has revealed for racist behavior ... and in some cases not even bothering to hide the racism in code. It's just plain rich. First you have the douche Westmoreland from GA with the uppity comments. Then you have the constant references to "they" in Fred Thompson's RNC pep rally speech.

Now, I'm not one to cry racism all day. Frankly, I don't care whether White folks rally to our cause or not when we call it out. But I'm not going to sit around and watch racist douche bags (might be too good for even that term) do foul stuff and not call it for what it is.

It always tickles me to see this stuff show up at Republican party gatherings that these same folks want to put it in our faces that they were the party of Lincoln. My ass. These folks are openly hostile to people of color and they dare wanting to make a pitch for us to join their party.

Now, I'm not necessarily big on the Dems as far as doing anything of substance for people of color. But you gotta at least say that the Dems don't typically have openly hostile things against us (unless we just beat them in the South Carolina presidential primary).

Rich Rethugs... just rich.

And while ya'll racist Republican mofos were creating waffle boxes with race-tinged stereotypes insulting just about every major racial group in American, another major Wall St. bank, Lehman Brothers, is apparently about to fold and Bank of America just bought up the troubled Wall St. giant Merryl Lynch. Yeah, THAT same Merryl Lynch that gambled with the house's money on Enron's fraudulent and nonexistent energy companies. Seems, they didn't learn their lesson.

All the while Lee County, Florida, where I reside, continues to be ground zero for percentage of foreclosures in the entire state. People are losing their homes. Banks and investors are losing their shirts. The U.S. economy is in the toilet and constantly being exposed for the house of cards that it is. Wall St. is being exposed for the out and out gambling and probably fraud that has lately become the status quo among mortgage banks, including and especially, so-called prime lenders.

War is raging in Irag and Afghanistan based on a lie. The U.S. military has been exposed for the paper tiger that it's become. And guess what ya'll... WE CAN'T AFFORD the more than $350 Million dollars flying out out the door each day. The joblessness rate among all Americans is the highest in the last 5 years. And quiet as it's kept, that rate is MORE THAN 10% (10.6% to be exact) among Black Americans and 8% for Hispanic or Latino Americans.

I could go on, but you get the drift. This is a pure distraction piece and virtually noone is beating the drums of what's really going on. Shame shame.

What it tells me is that the guys who designed the waffle box don't know a black person, a Mexican, or a Muslim. If they did, it might have occurred to them to show their design & get some reaction before they dropped a lot of money on it. They knew the market for the waffles. I've seen some cutting satirical caricatures of Obama in editorial cartoons that were not racist.

I agree EzMun, it is a "distraction piece", but how many among us are willing to contemplate our own demise?

In the same way, we shrink from being reminded of our own mortality.

Thanks for "beating the drums." Some of us are willing to stare death down, and spit in it's eye, and say, "Enough!"

Let's just hope that it's not too late.

Hey, Bob, they knew what our reactions would be. That's the whole point.

We were not their target. They understood their target group all to well, and it wasn't blacks, Muslims, or Mexicans--it was white conservative racists.

Was there some redundancy in that last statement?

You know what's even more telling: they put all this time, money and effort into this project, knowing full well that the idea would sell, well, like hotcakes.

Yep. Right on, Field.

The moment I reached your page and saw the post, I thought to myself, "Aunt Jemima."

Sorry. But the satire tip eludes me with this one.

Good call, Field.

I'm in the 5% that would get a tax hike with Obama's plan and I'm still voting for him because I believe that we will eventually have to pay for all the shit the baby boomers bought. The idea of low taxes with so much national debt just doesn't make any sense to me. Seriously...who's gonna pay for the wars, corporate bailouts and healthcare for aging baby boomers? Someone has to, right? However, the "hard-working American" segment of the electorate seems to be drinking the Koolaid once again. *sigh* So I console my self with the knowledge that the McCain tax break will leave me with extra funds to build a big fence and perhaps some hounds to release to keep all those "hard-workers" off my property once there aren't any good middle-class jobs anymore (outside of the military).

Bottm Line is this:

Oh, lets not forget that after your pep rally in denver ya'll forgot to pick up 20,000 American flags left laying on the ground.....

So, point your little winey fingers all day and cry racisim but the core of America is watching you and is NOT going to put someone in power like your boy.

he may be wright about the lip stix thing but remember..

You can put pancake mix on it but it don't make it white......LMAO

Its not rocket science, all Obama has to do is show how Mccain is not the Common man, especially if he can connect his historical economic views to the failing housing market. Palin and waffles and lipstick
is a distraction because McCain has little substance

Field-found your blog somehow...shit I was drunk that night...great posts, keep fighting. One thing to keep in mind, if McPalin is elected, we will be quite a bit closer to revolution. Certainly closer than I've seen in my 39 years...Anyone who would like should check out this blog:

It gives an excellent take on race and racism from a South African's perspective. Professor Laher was one of my Profs at Portland State U in Oregon...if ya want, check out mine-mikesearches.blogspot.com...peace

I was really tempted to photoshop a box of crackerjacks with McCain's face and replace the dog between the legs with a pitbull, but I couldn't do it.
Field, you hit the nail on the head in this post.

Maybe the people who thought the New Yorker "satire" magazine cover was funny and not racist can explain the difference between the waffle box and the New Yorker Obama cover. I'm black and according to the liberal elite, I have an unsophisticated and underdeveloped sense of humor.

Is it just because one is put out by "progressives" and can't be racist and the other is put out by the right and has to be racist?

Let's not forget the curious George t-shirts, either. How do they factor into white folks sense of humor?

So Ise gwine to sit cheer and wait for you to enlighten me'sms. Suh. And don't go usin' no big words 'cuz I can barely read. And if you use your usual illiterate syntax, I won't notice anyway.

It has never occurred to me that the President's face could be used to spur the marketing and sale of consumer products. May it is because all the presidents prior to Barack Obama have been boring white men.

Yet, the Germans are selling dolls of Barack Obama.
