Three days and counting.

" I live in a crazy time" ~Anne Frank~

Just three days to go, and Americans are bracing for the election of a lifetime. It's hard to believe that Donald J. Trump could be elected as the 47th President of the Unites States, but here we are.

I am not going to get into the litany of reasons why this man, a convicted felon, should never be seen anywhere near the White House again, I think that it is all well documented. (He should have been prosecuted and sitting in federal prison for what he did on January 6th.)  Although, I must say, that he is adding to that list every day.  The 1939 Nazi style convention in Madison Square Garden. The relentless attack on immigrants and people who are different. Openly bragging about his white skin, and mocking Kamala's ethnicity. Calling for the execution of Liz Cheney by firing squad, threatening mass deportations of people he doesn't think should be here.  Finally, and most importantly, not one single policy position that will make your life or mine any better. Not one. Oh wait...yeah, tariffs.

I am not going to  play pollster or prognosticator and dare try to guess the results on Tuesday. I'm bad at this stuff. I never thought that America would elect a black man with a funny name, and they did it. Twice. I never thought that someone like Donald Trump could be elected president, and he was.  So I honestly don't know what to expect. My gut instinct tells me that America will never elevate a black woman to the highest office in the land.  Heck, they wouldn't elect a white woman who was also more qualified for the position than Trump. The sexism is that strong. Throw race in the mix and you see where I am going. Most people who are voting for the felon will not be able to articulate a reason why. They will make all kinds of excuses for voting for him, and not one of them will make sense. They just know that Kamala is bad.

I give Trump credit, he figured it out. His us against them fear mongering campaign is working because Americans are afraid of change.  The logic goes like this:  Trump might be a terrible human being who plays on our worst instincts, but at least he looks like us. He can't be that bad. He will protect us from the brown scary people who are trying to take our country from us. There is nothing he can say or do that will change that thinking in the minds of fifty percent of the voters in America. That man he shot on 5th Avenue had it coming.  When he says that he would like to be a dictator for life like his pals, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un,  the Wall Street Journal declares that he does not have the attention span to carry out his agenda, and then endorses him.  Republican politicians are on cable news shows every night translating what he meant when he literally said something else.

This collective form of cognitive dissonance has infected a majority of white Americans.  Mr. Trump is hoping that it will be enough to place him in the most powerful position on earth once again.  He will be free to carry out project 2025, and play dictator while the sycophants around him feed his ego. Republicans will most likely control both houses, and the majority of the Supreme Court is made up of  obsequious hand-picked loyalist who have abandoned the rule of law for political reasons.

This is what we might be facing come the morning of November 6th.

Just know that whatever happens, I will be here. Maybe not as much as I would like, but I will still be posting when I can.

Thank you field hands for always checking in with your comments and insights.

Vote!

Some of us aren't, depending on how badly they bugger the health care system.
You know, the voters in Missouri are weird. They vote to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution, and on the same fucking ballot they vote for goddamn Republicans in the thrall of religious extremists who will pass a national ban or at least get an AG to enforce the Comstock act and severely limit its availability.

Field, yes obviously racism and sexism played a major part. But it all comes down to class warfare in the end. Trump’s skill (such as it is) is in persuading the working class that his branch of the establishment cares about them and will act in their interests. This Despite the evidence of the previous Trump presidency where he made the rich richer and the poor poorer. It’s a neat trick I suppose. His new tax proposals will do exactly the same and his tariffs regime will lead to higher inflation and job losses.

Incidentally, almost every democratic government in the world that was in power during Covid and the post Covid inflation run has now been voted out of office. That’s a global phenomenon and has also played a roll.

I was so, so wrong about the election outcome. I don't think there's away to talk myself into finding anything positive about the next four years--the harm that will last a generation. The thin slice of anything to look forward to is the spiteful thought that this country is going to get a close up look at what Trump/republican rule looks like and I hope every Trump voter is going to choke on it! Maybe the midterms will help steady the boat.

The Numbers Don't Add Up - The National Gaps vs Alaska Gaps

Kamal Harris lost the popular vote to Donald Trump by almost 10 million votes!

How did the election swing so far to Trump? How much was voter suppression - mail-in ballots sent too late to get back, Russian bomb threats and who knows what other shenanigans? Too few polling places in Democratic areas? Suppression of student votes and other forms?
How is it that Trump, after losing the popular vote to Clinton by 3 million votes

"[Clinton] outpaced President-elect Donald Trump by almost 2.9 million votes, with 65,844,954 (48.2%) to his 62,979,879 (46.1%), according to revised and certified final election results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia."
and to Biden by 7 million votes,

"Biden’s popular vote margin over Trump tops 7 million"
now beats Harris by almost 10 million votes? There were 155 million votes in 2020 but only 145 million this time. By all accounts there was a record number of people turning out this time. It would seem some votes are missing.

The numbers we have would mean the gap between increased by 13 million and by 17 million against Biden.

It doesn't add up. I know, racism and misogyny play a role, but not that much. Especially after all the terrible things we learned about Trump after the 2020 election. They've been listed by everyone already from Jan 6 through convictions and indictments. And I'd argue that Harris ran a much better and exciting campaign than Clinton or Biden did. And it sure looked like there were lots of people voting early and on election day.

How is it possible for him to have won the popular vote by a huge margin this time when he lost it significantly the two previous races?

Back in 2020, so many people were dying of covid that they were stacking the bodies in refrigerated trailers, and normal life was upended for a large segment of the electorate. Biden was a chance to maybe get their lives back. And he did that, they got their lives back so much that they felt they could vote to tear down the status quo again. Sort of like how after Obama fixed the mess W left the country in, they felt like they were doing well enough to elect the king of the birthers. The shit talking Fergus does about the country and the shape it's in may be bullshit, but a large portion of the electorate is so checked out from how things actually work that they believe it, at least enough to vote for the damn fool. A large number of them are about to pay a gruesome price for their vote, but I have no confidence that the survivors will learn anything from it.

TRUMP 2024

The Purple Cow said...

Stay with me on this one for the moment - What America needs is for Trump to enact the policies that he has promised in the campaign. This will give you short-term pain, but a long term destruction of MAGA/Populism.

His economic polices are going to be a disaster. Proposed Import tariff's will lead to inflation and job losses, and a trade war with China and the E.U. His proposed tax cuts, will actually increase the tax burden on the working class and decrease the burden on the rich.

His domestic policy of mass deportation will be a) inhuman, b) hideously expensive c) damaging to the economy as mass immigration has been the key driver of GDP growth in the USA. People may also start to noice that there's no-one around to do the nasty jobs that need doing but they don't want to do.

His international policy might just lead to global thermonuclear war, but at a minimum will lead to the destruction of Ukrainian democracy followed inevitably by the annexation of the Baltic states. The middle-East will in turn become a shit-show of unimaginable death destruction and pain.

Eventually, the working class in the USA will notice that after 8 years of Trump they are not actually any better off at all, there's nobody to left to clean their toilets, mow their lawns or clean their garbage, and their sons are being packed off to fight the new war in the middle East. This though does require the Democratic party to finally grow a pair of tentacles and come out and fight. They need to embrace class warfare if the USA is to recover from this godawful place they now find themselves in.

Now I can hear you thinking, 'that's ok for TPC on the other side of the Atlantic, but we are the's who are going to suffer', and that's a fair point. But you need to bite the bullet (figuratively - I hope) and take a long term view. Anyway, good luck comrades it's gonna be a struggle but we are with you.

Today from Heather Cox Richardson:
"Notably, Trump has said he will appoint Musk to head a new government efficiency commission, and Musk has vowed to cut “at least $2 trillion” from the federal budget. Such cuts would decimate government services, including food programs and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Supplemental nutrition programs disproportionately benefit rural areas, and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are used much more heavily in counties that support Trump than those that don’t. "

“Three factors have driven US growth

1. Mass immigration
2. Rise in profits in health care industry.
2. Military equipment spending. (Primarily for Ukraine).”

This is wrong. Immigration won’t, all by itself, drive growth. Immigration isn’t an industry. If there’s not enough of it to fill all the jobs, that will inhibit growth. But we don’t have an excess of it either. Native-born Americans aren’t currently hurting for jobs “stolen” by foreigners. That’s a made-up right-wing talking point. Unemployment is low, across the board.

And growth and profits are healthy across all sectors of the economy, not just health and defense. There is a reason the stock market is booming.

“ We were also told that US inflation was in good shape. Unfortunately none of health care insurance costs, car insurance costs and mortgage rates are measured in American inflation calculations. All of these things have risen massively in recent years.”

Also wrong, the central bank uses the PCE measure of inflation, which includes things like medical premiums, car insurance, and (indirectly through a weird thing called owners’ equivalent rent) mortgage rates. And inflation is low, as measured by CPE.

Bottom line: No, the macroeconomy situation isn’t good, but somehow still bad for working-class people. It’s just plain good, period.

Growth high, unemployment low, inflation low.

Growth high, unemployment low, inflation low.”

Now, if you want to argue that the US economy is UNFAIR, I’m right there with you. Wealth in the US is grotesquely unequally distributed, with flat, low wages for a large percentage of Americans, poor job security, etc. The Republican areas of the country have seen lots of disinvestment that they are, unsurprisingly, pissed off about.

The solution to this would seem obvious, but it’s not. The Bernie Sanderses of the world (and you, apparently) seem to believe that offering a fairer economic deal will do the trick, and if it hasn’t worked so far, it’s only because the Democrats haven’t gone far enough to the left. If the Dems have offered a hamburger, they need to offer a nice juicy steak instead, and all will be well.

But it’s much worse than that. The problem is that huge numbers of Americans are just pig-ignorant about how either economics or government work. They don’t trust that the Democrats can deliver that burger, much less a juicy steak.

They blame Biden for causing an inflation and crime spike (which were actually caused by COVID and are over). They blame Biden because the national minimum wage hasn’t increased in 17 years because Republican legislators have blocked it. They blame Biden for not managing to cancel their student debt when Republican judges have blocked it.

Making bigger and bigger promises won’t help if voters are too ignorant to understand why the smaller promises weren’t delivered, and decide they’d prefer to watch the government beat up some foreigners instead.

I don’t know to fix the ignorance problem. Many, many Americans don’t understand how anything works, and are too lazy to put forth the effort to find out. They just let the wingnut propaganda wash over them on social media and marinate in utter bullsh*t.

Democracy cannot work under these conditions.

Anonymous said...

“This though does require the Democratic party to finally grow a pair of tentacles and come out and fight. They need to embrace class warfare if the USA is to recover from this godawful place they now find themselves in.”

This all suggests that, after Trump and company have royally f*cked things up, the Dems can theoretically capitalize on this at the next election. But it is very possible there will never be a free and fair election again. That wasn’t just Harris campaign sloganeering. It is the brutal reality that our democracy is being dismantled.

There’s no silver lining here. The years ahead are likely to be a horror show.

Some of Trump’s proposed policies could potentially raise people’s living expenses, Hamrick added. He gave housing as one example, noting that mass deportations of immigrants could shrink the construction labor force, making it more expensive to build homes.

Anonymous said...

All of the explanations for Trump’s victory and Harris’ loss come straight from the cynical, democracy-skeptical HL Mencken, from a century ago. Perhaps he wasn’t correct about the hopelessness of democracy as a general proposition, but under the impossible conditions of the warped, diseased, toxified news/disinformation ecosystem of America in 2024? I’d have to say he’s right on the money.

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

— H. L. Mencken

“The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth.”

— H. L. Mencken

“There's no underestimating the intelligence of the American public.”

— H. L. Mencken

“On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

— H. L. Mencken

This election result is merely the latest result of the goddamn Republicans' effort to get millions of morons to hate their government. It was the stupid, damaging "Reagan revolution" and it works on people who just don't know or care how the government works, so have no clue what its absence will do to their lives. Which kind of speaks to how well the government actually works, that so many citizens can go about their lives completely unaware of what it does and how it functions.
Modern Republicans try their asses off to make politics so mean and ugly that no sane person without a personal stake in it would want to participate. They have been so successful at their endeavor that millions of rural Republicans vote for candidates who refuse the Medicaid expansion and let thousands of poor, white Republicans die unnecessarily.
And those poor, white Republicans who have died because of the way they voted? Their families still vote Republican, their dead relatives be damned. That's natural selection, folks.
The Democrats have been trying to run on "look at all of the good things we will do for you", but that usually isn't enough to break through the outright hatred stoked by the goddamn Republicans, and only tends to work at times when the goddamn Republicans have fucked everything up so badly that it interrupts the working of their daily lives, like in 2008 and 2020.
The danger this time is that the goddamn Republicans might do permanent damage to the workings of democracy, so the Democrats don't even get the chance to come in and clean up the damage they do, as they have been asked to for the last few decades. Or they will fail once again at obtaining total power and we will come in and try to fix everything they have destroyed while they do their dead level best to thwart our efforts. And that is a sort of best case scenario, which will still entail the destruction of untold lives of regular US citizens. Motherfuck these assholes, and everyone who helps them in any way.
