"White rage."

Image result for white rage book imagesI just read an interesting article that I feel compelled to share. It's a review of Carol Anderson's new book, White Rage.

The Field Negro education series continues.

"At the end of Jewelle Gomez’s seminal feminist novel, The Gilda Stories, Gilda and her crew of badass queer vampires (because, of course) are faced with a dying planet Earth. Centuries of white supremacy and unbridled capitalism have wreaked havoc on human society. The wealthy have escaped off planet to colonize other worlds (because, of course) and Gilda’s squad, along those who are too poor to escape, are left behind to pick up the wreckage. Sound familiar? Maybe it’s just me, but the times we are living in make me want to scramble and, as my granny would say, “get  my affairs in order.” So many things—the election, and its bevvy of undesirable choices, the state of the economy, the State’s rapacious desire for Black and Brown bodies, the fact that a gorilla (RIP Harambe) elicits more sympathy that the death of Mike Brown, Freddie Gray, or Sandra Bland, and the triumphant rise of Black resistance movements—make me alternately sick, fearful, and cautiously hopeful for the future.

Carol Anderson’s new book White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide engages these issues—well, except our boy Harambe. I first encountered Anderson’s thoughts on white rage in a 2014 op-ed that she wrote in the wake of Ferguson. She writes, “When we look back on what happened in Ferguson, Mo., during the summer of 2014, it will be easy to think of it as yet one more episode of black rage ignited by yet another police killing of an unarmed African American male. But that has it precisely backward. What we’ve actually seen is the latest outbreak of white rage. Sure, it is cloaked in the niceties of law and order, but it is rage nonetheless.”

Where is the lie?

I had the pleasure of interviewing Carol Anderson and picking her brain about her book. She defines white rage not simply as the in-your-face overt tactics of white supremacists, such as the KKK, but a range of seemingly more covert policies that frame and flank our political life. She told me, “White rage is that very cool, calculated policy thinking that shows up when African Americans advance and gain social capital. It swoops in to neutralize the gains.”

Watching the Ferguson protests, or rather how the media talked about Ferguson, was a turning point for her: “All the pundits had the same frame: look at Black folks burning up where they live. An endless loop about Black rage. I was looking at the TV, shaking my head ‘No! No, that’s not it.’ I thought, what we’re really seeing is ‘White Rage.’ I had lived in Missouri for 13 years or so and saw the ways the policy worked. Saw the kind of nonchalance about Black schools that were grossly underfunded and that did not work, that had been systemically starved. And policy makers being like, ‘oh well.’” For Anderson, Ferguson was a tipping point of White rage spilling over, not an example of excessive Black anger.

After Ferguson, Anderson became fascinated with tracing the history of white rage in American policy. Her book starts with Reconstruction. Basically, from the time Blacks got free legislators and policy makers have used language and crafted policy to police and control a now “uncontrollable” population. Anderson cites the fact that folks during and after the Civil War have tried to frame it as a solely “economic” fight over “states’ rights,” phrases that have become key words in pushing racist agendas for decades. But when you consider that slavery consisted of 80% of the country’s GNP, you can see how inextricable slavery is from American capitalism and the rise of the country as viable colonial power. Basically, the country’s proverbial hands been dirty.

White rage is clearly on display during this current raggedy ass election cycle. Take, for instance, the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Anderson notes that, “One of the things that is fascinating about the current election is that Trump is rewriting what has been GOP and Democratic political rhetoric. Since the 60s we’ve had dog whistle rhetoric. Trump doesn’t use dog whistle tactics, he just says it. The GOP is so angry with Trump because he is so overt; they have worked for years on coding their racist rhetoric and he’s so blatant. It’s making visible the deep racial hatred that exists in American society.”

So, what does Anderson suggest we do about white rage? “We need to pay attention as a society so that we are no longer seduced by dog whistles. We need to ask the tough questions. We need to hold each other accountable. It’s watching Trump’s rise that makes it clear how far we’ve gone off the rails. The rest of us have got to say no and require and demand a saner democracy that benefits all of us. We need to register to vote and go vote. Regardless of the roadblocks—it’s a major part of the accountability. It’s not sexy, but it’s effective.”

When I asked her about Black Lives Matter and white rage she said, “Black Lives Matter is absolutely essential. A major portion of what they are doing is asking the tough questions and making us pay attention. It’s making visible the horrific fissures in American society.”

White Rage not only makes plain a whole lot of the foolishness that is happening now in politics, but also provides context for how the hell we got here." [Source]

Carol Anderson's book is now officially on my summer reading list.

Not "Everybody's All- American."

Blake Estoril Open 2009 3.jpgJames Blake is an All American guy. He grew up in a solid middle class family in Connecticut, attended Harvard University, and spent much of his formative years in the very suburban town of Fairfield. Most important of all, though, he was a world class tennis player. He reached as high as number four on the tour and earned over seven million dollars in prize money.

James speaks "really well", looks very neat and "clean", and carries himself like a true gentleman.
He is the kind of Negro that Joe Biden would gush over.

So imagine how poor James Blake felt when he was treated like just another Mike Brown or Eric Garner on the streets of New York recently.

"Five white undercover cops slammed retired black tennis star James Blake to the ground outside his midtown hotel Wednesday in a violent case of mistaken identity.

The 35-year-old Blake, once ranked No. 4 in the world, suffered a cut to his left elbow and bruises to his left leg as the law enforcement quintet handcuffed and held him for 15 minutes outside the Grand Hyatt.

"It was definitely scary and definitely crazy," said Blake, adding that none of the men initially identified themselves as a police officer. His right eye appeared a bit red hours later at the hotel.

The cops were investigating a credit card fraud operation when they took Blake to the ground around noon."

Five undercover cops for a credit card fraud case?! My goodness, no wonder crime is on the rise in New York. You would think that they would find better way to utilize the NYPD's manpower.

Poor Mrs. Blake must have been beside herself. What? How dare they? He is not like those other blacks. He married me for crying out loud! Let me stop.

Anyway, fortunately someone recognized the former tennis star and the police reluctantly let him go.

As is to be expected, poor James was not feeling very All American after the incident.

“In my mind there's probably a race factor involved, but no matter what there's no reason for anybody to do that to anybody,” Blake said. “You'd think they could say, 'Hey, we want to talk to you. We are looking into something.’ I was just standing there. I wasn't running. It's not even close (to be okay). It's blatantly unnecessary.”

Now now James, don't go playing the "race card', America has been very good to you.

"A police source said Blake was misidentified as a suspect wanted for buying a cellphone with a bogus credit card. A man who was standing near Blake was arrested in connection with the scam, police said.

“Once Blake was properly identified and found to have no connection to the investigation, he was released from police custody immediately,” the NYPD said in a statement." [Source]

Well James, look at the bright side. You could have been some poor unknown black man minding his business in New York City, when New York's finest decided to act on their all black men look alike conditioning. Trust me when I tell you, your experience would have been a whole lot different.

Now go and enjoy the rest of the US Open with your friends.  Maybe your buddy John Mayer will write a song about the incident.

Et tu, Bozo?

"Now there's some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown When there's no one around..." ~Tears Of A Clown- Smokey Robinson~

I bet that clown in Memphis, Tennessee who lost his job because he let "color arousal" get the better of him is crying.

Not because he was exposed as a racist (heck he might be getting pats on the back from his like minded friends for that), but because he might not be able to get anymore gigs anytime soon.

Who wants to hire a clown that has "color arousal" issues?

Honestly, I never really liked clowns. I always found them to be kind of creepy. (I think they call it coulrophobia)That is, of course, until Homey D. Clown came along. I always liked Homey. Homey was a Field Clown, he didn't take any shit from the man.

I wonder how Homey would feel about the clown in this story.

Still, on some levels I almost feel bad for this clown. I mean clowns don't make a lot of money. Maybe he was forced to take a job as a clown because black folks were taking all the jobs in his area. You know, all that affirmative action and stuff.

Anyway, now he doesn't even have his clown job anymore.  I am sure that his family doesn't think that this is funny.

Finally, the lies and smears against a dead teenager in Ferguson, Missouri continues to unravel.

First it was the lie about Mike Brown having a major felony (or felonies) on his record at the time of his death. This was being spread by the right wing noise machine (I see you FOX VIEWS) to drum up support for officer Wilson and to further demonize the dead youth.

Now another lie has been debunked. This one, led by FOX, had Officer Wilson with a fractured eye socket. There was actually a picture posted of him on facebook to prove it.

There was just one little problem.

"On Tuesday, a Chicago firefighter named Kevin O’Grady posted this photo to Facebook, claiming it showed Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson’s injuries following his shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. He demanded to know why “the media” was not releasing this photo in the aftermath of the shooting. Over the course of two days, the post was shared more than 40,000 times.

The only problem? That man isn’t Officer Darren Wilson. In fact, he doesn’t even look very much like him:

It was a commenter on the site Little Green Footballs that first debunked the hoax, discovering that the photo was actually of freestyle motocross rider Jim McNeil who died in 2011 after he suffered a crash during practice. The photo is from an earlier injury McNeil suffered in 2006.

Media outlets, including Fox News, have been reporting that Wilson sustained a fractured eye socket during his supposed physical confrontation with Brown since shortly after the incident occurred. CNN later disputed that account, citing sources that said Wilson’s x-rays came back negative for any facial fractures." [Source]

I can't wait to read about the next lie.
