The fried chicken candidate.

"There are no automatics in life that all black people are going to support a single black candidate in a race...All black folks don't eat fried chicken or eat watermelon..."

That was my Mayor, Michael Nutter, talking about how some black folks are giving him the fuzzy eye ball because of his support of the "O" man. Indeed my Mayor is one of the more high profile African American leaders supporting the "Ice Queen" these days. It has put him front and center into the national spotlight, and has made him a must get for many media outlets who want to hear from one of the five black people in A-merry-ca who don't support the "O" man.

Now I happen to love fried chicken ( I will kill for some Popeye's), but I can't stand watermelon. And I suspect that there are some black folks who love watermelon but can't stand fried chi.....I take that back, I don't think there is a black person in A-merry-ca who doesn't love fried chicken. So you are wrong Mike, all black folks do like fried chicken. So think of the "O" man as your political fried chicken. Black folks love the guy, and as he gets closer to the White House , they are going to love him even more.

I suspect though, that my Mayor doesn't really care about that because I really don't think he has aspirations for a higher political office. And if he does, he won't need a majority black vote to get it. My Mayor has always gotten a lot of love from educated white folks and just enough of the black vote here in Philly to make him politically viable. That won't stop now, and he knows it. So why not take a shot and support the "Ice Queen"? I also suspect that there is some political pay back at work here. The "O" man supported Nutter's opponent, Chaka Fattah, in the last Mayor's race, and I don't think Mike has forgotten that.

Still, I am going to upset some of you Obamaholics and say that Mayor Nutter has every right to support the Ice Queen if he thinks that she is the best candidate. And like he said, why don't white folks ask Teddy Kennedy why he is supporting Obama and not the white candidate? You are right Mike, we don't all have to like fried chicken and watermelon, and people shouldn't expect us to. You are free to like your chicken baked, and mangoes instead of melons. But it would be nice if we got a really good reason why you are supporting lady Hillary. Especially since we know that our Governor and the rest of the party machine is supporting her. It would help if you were just honest and up front with us and told us that you were supporting her because it's the shrewed political thing to do. I don't like watermelon because of all the seeds, and for some reason it always makes my stomach feel funny when I eat it. So why doesn't my Mayor like the "O"man ? He says he likes Hillary because she understands the "tough issues facing America's cities". But does she really? To believe that, you really have to be wearing blinders. Honestly, I think that my Mayor hedged his bet a little too early. He jumped on the Hillary bandwagon and can't jump off now. To his credit, he has stuck with with his guns, and he is staying on the good ship Hillary no matter what.

All I can say Mike is that if the "O" man wins you better make up with him fast. I don't want my beloved city to suffer because of your poor political calculations. You better send him some cheese steaks, soft pretzels, and season tickets to the Sixer's games (I hear he loves his B ball). If that doesn't work, you might want to consider some fried chicken from Delilah's. I bet he likes fried chicken like the rest of us.

Nutter does have the right endorse whoever he wants. I give him that. But, what pissed me off is when he decided to lend his commentary on several national media venues about how he would have left Obama's church... blah, blah, blah.... This was days after Obama's speech in Philadelphia and a time when things seemed to be moving on... So, he stepped up to the plate to be the reminder.... For that, he belongs in the House! I wrote him and told him as someone who voted for him, I was deeply ashamed of him for that. Shocking! He hasn't responded.

On a more humorous note, last Friday, there were some Hillary supporters on the corner of 12th & Walnut...why there I have no friggin idea... anybody from Philly knows you do that kind of action along Broad or right at the T of Market and 15th in front of City Hall.... but anyway, they were holding signs saying honk for Hillary... and NO ONE honked... people just pointed and laughed at them.... it was one of the moments, when again, I LOVE Philly!

I'm a feminist, yet I support Obama because I think he is the better candidate. And the mayor has every right to support Hillary if he thinks she is the best candidate.

I just don't know how you come to that conclusion . . .

I wouldn't vote for a candidate JUST because the candidate is black, or a woman, or whatever. But all things being equal, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking into account letting somebody new (i.e., not an old white man) get a seat at the table.

I didn't support either of these people initially, because I'm a radical, and they weren't left enough for me (they never are). BUt of these 2 who have very similar voting records, I could easily boil it down to one thing and the decision would be bright as day: Iraq.

Hillary got it wrong, and just kept on getting it wrong up until a few months ago. Thats inexcusable. I have yet to hear a sensible argument for supporting her.

I dig Obama. I feel like he knows what its like to be black in America, and that goes a long way for me in a racist society. But, people think Obama can walk on water and are not really paying attention to who his advisors are or what it means we he says he wants 90,000 new troops. What do people think he wants them for? Dancing? Obama is a mainstrema politician who is going to do mainstream things.

Bottom line, we could vote Jesus in and he couldn't fix this. Capitalism is organized corruption and legalized crime. Obama, Hillary or McCain and the working class loses again. Why do we continue to play this game? Because we haven't accepted that reality.

dear field,

Nutter's entitled to his opinion, but at least he's not as batshit insane as some guy who told me to vote for McCain earlier today.

And I'd kill for some Popeye's too. Yesterday's newspaper had coupons from heaven... 3pcs mixed chicken or chicken strips, 2 reg sides and a biscuit for $4.99.

Damn, when someone writes, "Wyclef needs a sociology class" I gotta pay attention to them!

Then you let both, Obama and Hilary have it, which I agree with everything you just said. I believe that Obama would pull the same old Neoliberal tactics on any Arab country that doesn't fall in line by starving them out just via sanctions. His opposition to the Iraq war is more about exploiting the failure of a political oponant as a weakness. It has nothing to to with being genuinely left.

Obama Didn't Want My Money - Updated w/link to letter
by Borell
Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 10:12:52 AM PDT

I just had the strangest experience. A presidential candidate gave me back my donation, told me would not accept it because of what I do for a living, and it left me more committeed to the candidate and convi[n]ced that he is the person that must be the next president.

I went to the mailbox and found a letter from the Obama Campaign. Enclosed was a check for $100, the return of my contribution from earlier this month along with a letter explaining why it would not be accepted.

p.s.: As a side note, last year my spouse had set up automatic monthly payments to Hillary (nothing big $10/month) but after switching to Obama, had to battle with the Clinton campaign to cancel the automatic payment. I find it ironic that one campaign won't take my money, the other won't give it back!

Updated to add: I though[t] we had finally stopped the payments to the Clinton Campaign, but after checking with my spouse, it turns out they are still taking the payments 3-4 months after we asked them to stop.

Field,
We all know what you mean but you typed this...:-)
That was my Mayor, Michael Nutter, talking about how some black folks are giving him the fuzzy eye ball because of his support of the "O" man.

Chris Matthews of MSNBC made an interesting observation today about Gov. Ed Rendell. He noted that although Gov. Ed is a vocal and staunch Hill supporter he has, so far, not gone negative on SBO. Chris wondered if Gov. Rendell is staying on SBO's good side in case he has a chance of being on SBO's short Veep list.

As for fried chicken, I've read that the Obama's watch their diets and are healthy eaters and even insist that Sasha and Malia not be fed unhealthy foods while in the care of their grandmother. Reportedly, Grandma doesn't wholly deprive them of the fried chicken experience but substitutes by cooking baked fried chicken with a cornflake batter.

SingaporeSwim said...

It's actually crumbled Ritz crackers that she uses...
The rules about eating healthily she finds especially limiting.

"That's not my thing," Robinson said. "Well, see, I grew up when you had good food, right? I can't change that at this late day and time."

Like fried chicken, for instance. Her secrets: using crumbled Ritz crackers in the batter, bathing the chicken pieces in ice water before frying ("that makes it crispier"), adding salt liberally, and using "lots of oil."

"If you're going to have fried chicken," she said, "have fried chicken.

While Robinson tries to obey regulations when she watches the girls at the Obamas' house, her grandmotherly indulgences know few bounds when they come to her place.

"I have candy, they stay up late - come to my house, they watch TV as long as they want to, we'll play games until the wee hours," Robinson said. "I do everything that grandmothers do that they're not supposed to."

Robinson's deep involvement in her granddaughters' lives gives the Obamas a direct link to a simpler past that the couple hold as something of an ideal.

Brotherkomrade:

I agree with you 100% on this one. The typical anti-war narrative starts when Evil George Bush invaded Iraq but they some how skip over the 10 years of United Nation's SANCTIONS under which hundreds of thousands of people died for want of food, medical care and economic opportunity. After a few years the United Nations - our body of 'international law' was so gracious to allow the "Oil For Food" program to provide the unwashed masses with a bit of relief for their basic needs.

Obama's version of his "War On Terror" (aka: WWOHDIIWP- What Would Obama Have Done If I Were President) does not make sense and he HAS NEVER BEEN CALLED ON IT. He knows that he only needs to confound what George Bush ACTUALLY did and that his left wing base would support him accordingly.

He proposed to have invaded Afghanistan - the people who attacked us on 9/11 and then into Pakistan to search out Osama Bin Laden.

Of course we know that the day that Bin Laden was captured "Muslim Extremists" around the world would lay down their arms and broker a 10,000 year peace treaty. .....Riiiiiight!!

Just as foreign fighters spilled into IRAQ no doubt they would spill into Afghanistan and Pakistan if these were the only theater in which the Infidels (that would be the United States) chose to wage war. Much of the Obama rhetoric is only good for the DOMESTIC USA presidential run. It has little relevance to what THOSE WHO WE ARE FIGHTING would do.

Besides - in December 2007 - Al Zhawari, the #2 man for Al Queda said "We will fight the infidel (against this means US) in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somolia". So indeed if a President Obama gave Bin Laden the perp walk Al Zhawari who is #2 would be the new leader and thus his mission would still be carried out.

In my view as someone who IS NOT Left Of Center the best thing that the LEFT, who are IDEOLOGICALLY and MORALLY SUPERIOR can do is to STOP BEING A "Capitalist Consumer Co-Conspirator". Become one with your theories and refuse to consume "blood oil" that was obtained from the imperialist policies of the USA. If the USA were not IMPERIALISTS you wouldn't have these goods so why don't you live your lives absent the fruit which was picked from this tree of ill-gotten goods?

Is it that the USA needs to CHANGE...........OR YOU who does?

Your Governor said the good white folks just are not ready for a black candidate....That confirms your Mayor isnt black in the good white folks eyes. Your Mayor should focus on finding jobs and affordable housing for African American instead of supporting the candidate who husband developed and enforced the three strikes you fuk policy and powder is power but since crack is black we will lock em up for 15 - 20 yrs then let back out when their folks are on a fixed income and cannot provide assitance.

for the record, I like fried chicken and watermelon, but I don't like iced tea or lemonade ;)

I don't do fried foods as a rule but on a recent trip to Houston I tried Frenchy's Creole Fried Chicken (the Scott St. location) and YUM-O!

See what you started, Field?

A sista had to go and get her grub on at Popeye's last night. Here in Virginia, the Popeye's down the street from my house has a 2-piece deal for $2.99 on Tuesdays (including a side). You get a choice of either white or dark meat at 1/2 price.

Thank you for making a sista that hongry. LOL

What's this about Staff Sergeant David Bellavia comparing SBO to Tiger Woods?

You can have your Tiger Woods. We’ve got Senator McCain."

This was all over Countdown last night. He's either saying that all mixed race men are interchangeable (which would make it a racist statement) or he was trying to give Obama a big compliment by comparing him to someone who is at the top of his game, which doesn't make sense because he is supporting McCain. In any case, the comment makes him an idiot and it makes McCain a moron for not saying something about it.

You can still say any damn dumb thing you want about black people and most of the media will not even break stride over it.
I disagree Mr. Field. Stephanie Tubbs Jones gives this as one of the reasons she is for Hillary--"I gave my word". That's not a good thing! Do we really want people in office who refuse to change their minds when more information becomes available? Doesn't that sound just like Bush and Cheney 'nem?
KellyBelle:

Reverse your clock to September/Octover 2006. On the verge of the mid-term elections then both Jackson-Lee and Tubbs-Jones had head gear on but what is now considered a handkerchief by some now was seen as a silk scarf back then.

You see those two women who are now scorned for their JUDGMENT were held in high esteem back then. At that time they were selling Black America on the BENEFITS of having the House taken over by the Democrats.

While they are now seen as having 'bad judgment' back then they were said to be agents of BLACK PROGESSION. The new "Black committee chairmen" that would result from this Democratic take over were going to "make us PROUD"!!

Any idea how these two women's fortunes turned so quickly?

All I can see is that they shifted from cheer leading for Blacks to vote Democrat in 2006 and then they cheered for BLACKS TO VOTE DEMOCRAT in the spring of 2008 once again. The only problem this time is that it is an INTRAMURAL FIGHT this time.

One thing that I an 10000% percent certain of though, come November 2008 there is NO BLACK PERSON WHO TELLS BLACK FOLKS TO "VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRAT" who will be "De-Blackified" as is the case right now for them 'misdirecting' their electorate during the intramural battle.

I like fried chicken well enough. I mean, I'll eat it if it's served to me. But I don't love it. I would never cook it, and very rarely would choose it over another food on a menu. Popeye's does nothing for me.

Good, cold, seedless watermelon, in season, on a hot day is wonderful.

Honestly, I can't figure out why anyone, Black, White (yes I capitalized both of them) or otherwise would vote for Hillary. In recent months she's shown herself to be woefully out of touch with just about everything. I can't see the appeal.

And, I don't know why anyone thinks that Ted Kennedy hasn't had White folks question his support of Obama. As part of the Democratic establishment - he was definitely expected to support the connected White woman rather than the Black upstart.

I am not surprised or disappointed in the least at certain Black people who support Hillary - they're doing what they think is the safe thing, doing what they're told and waiting for the crumbs to sprinkle down on them.

I am having a party in November on election night if he is the candidate. I am serving fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens (with turkey) and candied yams. You are all invited!

But Black Barack Obama supporters are the "vanguard of proven change" and connectedness in Black America???????

My vantage point as a Black man who is not a Democrat (no I am not a Republican either) has me both laughing and astonished at the intramural death match which is going on. Terms that had formerly been reserved for people who disagree with the POPULAR political sentiments of Black America are now being applied to fellow Democrats who have it all wrong in their support.

The common denominator is that if you DISAGREE with the popular sentiment - you are going to get attacked. The same cajoling that was faced by the Dixie Chicks, for example, but condemned by 'the left' is also EMPLOYED by these same people. Group antics know no ideological bound.

For those of you who are Anarchist/Marxists on the blog - how do you reconcile your support for Obama with the fact that his biggest contributions have come from the same CAPITALISTIC lobby that you despise at your core? (PS: I just picked up the latest copy of "International Socialist Review" to advance my attempts to 'understand' you all and how you think. Forget "Faux News" - this material proves far more interesting http://www.isreview.org/)

Why is it that evil George Bush who received funding from these same entities was "bought and sold" before he even got into office but Obama who has the same stack of canceled checks (in addition to those from YOU) is not going to act upon these favors.....because YOUR MONEY in support of him will neutralize theirs? (Do you really believe this?)

Heads up Field! McCain, aka McStupid, McSalty, McMorton, I personally like McMoron, is going to Philly to speak to Black folks. South Philly, to be exact.

My gut gets sick when I eat watermelon too. But I can't resist the fried chicken. I'm a vegetarian, but I just ate the skin and batter off a chicken thigh.
