You have to start somewhere.

I saw Mr. Morton on the Edmund Pettus Bridge today, and it felt so strange to see a republican candidate for President of these divided states, campaigning in cotton picking country out in rural West Alabama. Talk about surreal. But there was Mr. Morton, praising the marchers on the bridge and giving an honest to god olive branch to my peeps.

Now I must give it to Mr. Morton's people, I think it's a brilliant political strategy to reach out to African Americans while he has the republican nomination already locked up. Let's face it, none of the folks who vote for Mr. Morton are going to vote for Hillary or the "O" man in the general, so his base is in tact. The best thing that Mr. Morton can do now is to hold down the voter turnout among the dumbocratic base. If Hillary wins, for instance, can you imagine the angst it will create among black folks? Many of you will stay home, and some of you will even cross over and vote for Mr. Morton. So why not reach out to your fickle asses now? Just to let you know that it's cool to go to the dark side, and vote for the republican candidate. It's smart, and it just might work. Mr. Morton has been around more black folks lately than Jerry Springer, and it might not translate into more votes for him, but it sure could translate into black folks staying home if Hillary were to win the dumbocratic nomination.

Now let me put this out there right now; and I know that this is going to piss off a bunch of you Obamaholics, because I have heard quite a few of you say that you will never vote for Hillary. But if she (Hillary) happens to beat the "O" man, I am voting for her ass, period. I am not ready to join that rethugliklan tent just yet. I have some serious issues with claustrophobia and somehow I don't think that tent is as big as they say it is.

"Oh but field Hillary is too divisive, we need someone that can bring the country together" My answer to that would be why? Why the fuck would I want to come together with my political enemies? See, it's like this, I came from a place where we shot at our political enemies, so excuse me if I am not feeling the whole Kumbaya thing. I don't want to reach across the isle like the "O" man, because I happen to be a creature of my convictions. And what I believe ain't what those red state folks believe; no matter what they tell you, and no matter how many civil rights sites Mr. Morton visits. My interests are different than their interests, and just because we have to share a country together doesn't mean we have to agree on shit. For instance, I believe in a woman's right to choose, yet I am against the death penalty. I believe that two people of the same sex should have the right to marry each other, and adopt as many kids as they would like. I believe in implementing some serious gun control measures in urban areas, and I believe that felons should be given the right to vote after they serve their time to society. I believe that health care should be free to every citizen..scratch that, every human being-- citizen or not-- who happens to live in these divided states of A-merry-ca. And speaking of citizens, I believe that illegal immigrants who are here now should be allowed to stay if they can proof that they have a full time job. I believe that billionaires like Warren Buffet should pay the same amount of taxes percentage wise as Joe Sixpack. I believe that the minimum wage should be raised to $8 an hour, and I believe that there should be a cap on certain CEO compensation packets. I believe that the environment is seriously fucked up and we should do something about it. I believe that we should spend as much money in education as we do on defense. And I believe that we should get the fuck out of Iraq yesterday. But I seriously digress.

So yes folks, if Hillary wins the nomination, I will be voting for her in spite of what goes down in these primaries, and in spite of how much Mr. Morton is trying to schmooze my peeps. Sorry, after the last "compassionate conservative" who occupied the White House, excuse me if I am not buying what Mr. Morton is selling. I have seen their kind of compassion before, and if you don't mind I will take my chances with one of the dumbocrats again this year.

So thanks for the nice gesture Mr. Morton, I am glad you have a sense of history, and that you acknowledged the civil rights struggle, and field Negroes like John Lewis. Your party has come a long way from when that fake ass cowboy from California took his sorry ass to Philadelphia Mississippi to piss on us. But unfortunately for you I have a long memory, and it will take more than a trip to Selma to make me forget all that shit, or to make me rethink my stance on any of my positions. Especially since I know that you disagree with damn near everyone of them.

"I am aware the African American vote has been very small in favor of the Republican Party. I am aware of the challenges, and I am aware of the fact that there will be many people who will not vote for me, but I'm going to be the president of all the people."

Sorry Mr. Morton, but I am one of those people who won't be voting for you, but nice try.

dear field, i am deeply saddened to think you would vote for hillary. i will not vote for her. my distaste for her as grown daily throughout this primary campaign. i hate her. i think she is now a republican.
anyhow obama is the nominee. it is not yet official...soon though. lookin forward. who needs this bad thought about what to do if it is a choice between crazy and psycho.

SingaporeSwim said...

field,
good thing you won't have to hold your breath and vote for hill come november since obama will be the dem nominee, slowly but surely.

what you and every obama supporter in pa should be doing is mobilizing each and every obama supporter for tomorrow's primary.

y'all need to keep that race close and tight all night.

SingaporeSwim said...

based on some polls [and, of course, subject to change] something like 20%-30% of hill's supporters have said that they will support mccain if obie is the nominee. they clearly are turncoats - and the same for obie supporters who would turn on hill if she were the nominee.
don't vote w/retribution in mind; this election is not about hill or obie.

trust me singaporeswim, the Obamaholics are out here thick mobilizing their forces.

mrs. field will be first in line at the voting booth tomorrow. I honestly think that if she could have voted twice she would have.

Your boy will lose PA by 7% points tomorrow, which will be somewhat of a mild victory for him, so relax.

anyfrombrooklyn, you need a hug :)
And here I thought I was angry.

field,
i'd be satisfied if her win margin is 7%, ecstatic if 5% or less - but i'm a realist.

i just hope that undecided's aren't greatly influenced by hill's last minute scare tactic [osama is featured in her latest teevee ad] or the anti-obama robocalls.

Damn, I agree with all of your positions except the minimum wage thing. Also, you mentioned some time ago the possibility of Supreme Court vacancies. So, if Hillary is the nominee, I will strongly support her campaign. Doing otherwise, no matter how pissed I may be at her, just doesn't make any sense.
On a more positive note, we will not have to make that decision. Senator Obama will win the nomination, and the election.
President Obama. Has a nice ring. Get use to it.

Field,
I am with you.... in the HIGHLY unlikely chance that Hillary gets the nod.... I will vote for her and not McCain. And for those of you that even THINK about voting for him, check out this video that the far right had put out just today. These are the people that are supporting McCain:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0IcnYWGSSE
Unless he comes out and says this is a bunch of shit and he wants no part of it... unless he points out that ILL put a moratorium in place because of all the innocent people on death row (which Barack Obama led the fight to do) then he does not deserve you to even consider voting for him!

Field,
Best.Post.Ever. I agree with every word. I've been trying to say the same thing for a while now. Has Hillary pissed me off, but NO WAY IN HELL COULD I SIT BY AND WATCH MR. MORTON GET ELECTED. Stakes is high, no time for flexing muscle and getting pissed off at the Democratic party. Real, tangabale principles are at stake and Hillary is a better deal for America than Mr. Morton.

Nice platform. Have you considered running for office?

Mind you, personally, I'd prefer a higher minimum wage (than you suggest), and its being indexed to inflation, and higher taxes for the rich than the middle class, but your platform is still better than most political candidates I've voted for.

But with each passing day, Candidate "NONE" is looking better and better.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton confirmed Monday that as president she would be willing to use nuclear weapons against Iran if it were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel.

OK.... I take back what I just said... if Hillary gets the nod... I am voting for Cynthia McKinney!!!!! ANYONE that threatens to use nuclear weapons... the most immoral action we could ever take... an action that violates International Law, an action that would surely bring global attacks against this country..... will NEVER get my vote!!!!!

I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion on this here macho site, but as long as we're talking about what we believe -- I believe several of those couples will make darn sight better parents than some hetero black men who don't take care of their natural-born kids.

Yes, those of you who nodded along the last time Field talked about what went down in court -- and didn't breathe a whisper when it came to addressing "the brothas" who helped make the babies, but came down REAL HARD on the sistas screaming for child support, I'm talking to you.

I'm not buying what McMoron is selling.
This guy has the nerve to give a speech from this bridge, about the Civil Rights Era, this after voting against civil rights legislation his whole career.
He wants people to check his record and experience. All I see is a bitter man who votes his party line, no matter how foolish that line may be.

This is just another one of his attempts to get non-racist whites to vote for him, giving the number of racists he has working his campaign.

You should call it for what it is- not bridge-building, but ass kissing.

I am really conflicted. I hear what you are saying Field but I don't think I can vote for Hillary. I feel she has to held acountable for her actions as does Mr. Morton. I don't think I can vote for him either, so what the heck would I do?

I am hoping I won't have to make that decision. Obama is still ahead in delegates and the popular vote. I can't see the superdelegates giving it to HIllary at this point, unless she offers each one something extra-special.

Well McCain should do some ass-kissing. He can't ignore 12% of the population and those Rethugs never should have. Perhaps some of our needs could get addressed. It's nothing personal now - we just need to be strategic. Hold your nose politics to the max. Kinda like HRC saying on Larry King without so much as batting an eyelash that she would enthusiastically support Obama if he was nominee. Did I believe her - heck no! But I admire her ability to lie so well. She's done it for so long she may actually believe it. Naw...scratch that! And I'm not voting for her no matter what.

But if she (Hillary) happens to beat the "O" man, I am voting for her ass, period.

You won't have to make a Sophie's Choice, Field.

The Borg Queen is behind in the popular vote, behind in the delegate count and her campaign is running red ink.

She can't make a sane, rational, reasonable argument to the few undecided Superdelegates to support her over Barack. Anymore, she just sounds tired and desperate and unhinged.

My prediction is, the Borg Queen will suspend her campaign after Puerto Rico. By June, the party elders led by Al Gore, Howard Dean and Speaker Botox, will have her arrested and thrown in a cell in GITMO if necessary.

The Denver convention is really just a formality. Barack is the Democratic nominee and I think and I believe, Barack will be elected the 44th president of the United States.

Like, if Im a registered Democrat, that I should support that party and not the individual. And, Hillary is better than McCain any day of the week. Both things to think about.

Honestly, the only reason Im still a registered Democrat is because I want to actually vote in a primary. I want to actually have a choice in who makes it to the final election. Now, doesnt seem like it matters much.

I have a lot to think about.

I can't vote for Hillary. As president, she'll make this country even more divided than it already is. Eyes haven't seen, ears have not heard how bad things can get. I beleive electing Hillary will bring us to a national nadir.

McCain, while not my ideal choice, will at least help us tread water until he either dies or we can elect someone else. And, even though it's not popular, keeping us in Iraq might be the kind of tough love we need. To paraphrase a yellow-cake shaking statesman, "We broke it, now we bought it." Just pulling out and leaving Iraq to fend for itself is not the ticket.

Anonymous said...

As detestable as Hillary has become during this election, we cannot lose sight of the bigger picture. The differences between Hillary and Obama have become more personal vs. where they stand on real issues. On issues like health care, education, the economy and Iraq, McCain would be the worse choice. Additionally, don't forget that several of the more liberal and moderate Supreme Court Justices will most likely retire in a couple of years. You do not want another conservative President to appoint more conservative justices to the court. Trust.

But rest assured that I am an avid reader. I agree with everything you said. I have the exact same points of views. However I will not vote for Hill-Billy. I will write in my own candidate before I support her. I know my forefathers died to give me the right to vote, but they also died so that I can have a choice on who to vote for. I choose not to support Hill-Billy. I will have to suffer in silence for 4 years if she somehow gets the Nod. That might sound wrong to some people, but I cannot support anyone that I do not respect or like. To me it is like a man giving a job to the man he caught f--king his wife. I can not do that. I can forgive, but I cannot forget. And like you Field, I have a very long memory.

dear field, i do need a hug. i am exhausted with my political obssession. that said...i surely will never ever, ever have electoral relations with that woman. did you see her last night on olberman? cackle city!
i urge those who are still pledging to vote for her to consider how she repeatedly insults the base of the party. this is one of the reasons why her war vote is so significant. she takes our support for granted while stepping on our beliefs.
twice in the past two weeks she invoked me as a new york constituent as she pressed the attack on obama with swiftboat bitter. for her to play swiftboat politics literally in my name is beyond enraging.
i regret only one vote i have ever cast. my vote for senator clinton in 2000. for some reason i don't regret my votes for chuck schumer. why is that? i don't know. maybe because he avoids gratuitously insulting and offending me.
in january 2001 many of us gathered on the cold and wet streets of washington d.c. to protest the inauguration of an unelected president. he had achieved his office by disenfranchising black voters in florida. the night before, bill and hillary clinton were quietly focused on themselves as they wrote several unethical presidential pardons. you can guess which one of these two stories was the topic of media coverage throughout late january.
i relate this anecdote only to point out that her poor performance began right at the start.
two weeks ago, she declared that if one ignored senator obamas prescient speech of 2002, it was she who had first criticised the iraq war. aside from the overt silliness of this argument, i knew it to be false. i remembered her infuriating war boostering. sure enough bloggers checked the records after she made her comments and found that she was boostering as recently as 2005 after visiting iraq with...mccain.
i predict that if she were to become president she would have many of those who vote for her to block mccain ruefully regretting their vote before it is all over.
there comes a point where you have to draw the line. i have drawn it and she has crossed it.

Will I have in November the same problem I had in 2004? Do I vote for Bush and let him finish what he started or do I vote for Kerry, just because?

Do I vote for McCain to finish what Bush started, sending this nation into the toilet, or do I vote for Hillary just because? It is a problem.

I really want Obama for the win. But in these united states where people say "I don't see color" and feel that they have done enough, will they still vote for a black man?

These are the same people that think affirmative action isn't necessary. They think the way they do and assume so does everybody else. In these divided states Obama has more against him than his politics. It is not who he is but a matter of what. People are putting their best "I don't see color" foot forward but will they follow through in the fall. I hope so.

The troops are massing. This is interesting. Tony Snow is slated for a spot at CNN, Glen Beck, the guy that makes Imus look like a prince is already there, and I'll bet my teeth that Rush will come back to tv if a democrat wins.

Also if a dem wins it will be interesting to see how astonishingly fast the rethugs forget how we got in the state we are in. Sorry for the wind, but I always wonder how far in the toilet this nation has to get before we ALL get it. With a McCain win I may be able to find out.

Hillary is just being her usual self evil, cruel, controling and power hungry. So, I can no longer hate on this woman. People who expected better form Hillary were naive.

Hell, McCain is the only one with true experience to lead this country. Even if all his past experience is bad. Sadly, McCain has some mental issues. That will hinder him in this election.

@AndyfromBrooklyn, yes I remember Clinton's pro-war stance, in Feb 07

Great work brother Field. You know I feel you on the things you believe in. I would add a living wage to your requests as well as full employment. I would add an end to racism, sexism and any other discrimination. I would also end the discrimination and hindrances used to keep many independent and third party candidates off the ballot. You are getting close to the tipping point, my brother.

I think you know where I stand on this bourgeois circus called an election. Its a great distraction, but the problem is still "the system"!! Or as MLK put it, "an edifice that continues to produce beggars needs restructuring."

In other words why cant we consider taking the preamble to the Constitution seriously. I don't how many people noticed the words that were read from that document prior to the Super Bowl's kickoff.

I mean why can't we consider real live government for the people by the people. Most people know as I do that whoever is elected in November will carry out the same policies, only one will give us a little more hope or toss a few more pennies our way. And Mr. Morton will continue the status quo.

The time has come to look past tweedlee dee and tweedlee dum. And if people think I am talking out of the side of my neck. Check out the early part of last century when people turned to Socialist candidates and working class ideology (scarry I know) and the platforms they ran on which were platforms based on the real things that people wanted. The difference today is that the folks in power have convinced us we can't have the things we want, socialized medicine, a livable wage, quality public education for all, full employment, etc.

When folks were about to revolt in the late 20's and 30's because of lack of employment and a scarcity of food, the capitalist figured out a way to make concessions and hire folks, it started the WPA and all kinds of other programs to keep folks from deciding to take power into their own hands. Its where we get Social Security and unemployment benefits, etc. Look it up.

And Kelly Belle "us" didn't get into Iraq it was the folks in power that did that. You wouldn't attack folks who weren't attacking you and even if you disagreed with the way they were running their house, you wouldn't take it over. At least I hope you wouldn't.

Pulling out of Iraq is just the ticket and leaving behind resources and rebuilding the infrastructure that this government not "we" or "us" destroyed, is just what Iraq needs.

But you are kidding right? I mean these folks can't/won't educate Jamal in Philly, provide dental care for May Beth in Appalachia or rebuild New Orleans, provide health care for Juan in Arizona, or make sure that the elderly woman in Ohio who has worked all her life doesn't wind up on the streets while paying for her medicines. And I could go on but you get the point.

You aren't naive enough to think that the same people who try to divide us right here, with race, sex, ethnicity, etc, are really trying to unite the Iraqis. And surely you don't believe that the government and the corporate theives that are misusing your tax dollars went to Iraq out of some sense of altruism. Do you?

Yes brother Field it is getting closer to the time when folks like me who say there has to be another way are not looking so crazy.

The Republicans are sooo stupid too ignore the black vote. One of these days it's going to bite them in the ass.

I don't know why they don't try and go after the black vote more aggressively. All they have to do is get some black mega churches too co-sign on their ignorance. This won't be hard. Yes, I loove the black church but it can be incredibly easily corrupted. They should also make some inroads with black women. They should court some high-profile black women as mascots. They should also aggressively go after and court black women candidates for local elections. They need to set up some grassroots organizations withing the black female community. I've talked about this on What About our Daughters as a commentator on their blog talk radio.

The Republicans could make some huge inroads but they are just too arrogant and stupid.

Well, McCain certainly has the "bigoted and fearful" vote, why not go for the "historically and recently wounded" vote too?

I refuse to even entertain the idea that he'll become president no matter who gets the nomination.

Off-topic:

If you live in PA (and you're registered with a party that has a primary today), please vote.

Field, you didn't leave much for me to say. I'll just put an amen to that!

I agree with wng. There's too much at risk to let any Republican, and particularly that Republican, into the White House. John Paul Stevens (God Bless him), and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (God Bless her, too), cannot hold on through another GOP presidency.

...I think that lost in the shuffle of Hillary vs Obama, McCain vs. ??? and Bush vs. [well...everybody] people forget that WE HAVE THE POWER! In other words, it shouldn't really matter who is in office, because if the people mount up and act as self-advocates, our cause SHOULD be attended to. I mean if a Rep. gets into office, is all lost? Of course not, thus its not so much a question of what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country (Sound familiar? LOL).

breaking news!!! Hillary just won Pennsylvania! This won't matter in the long run as she didn't win by that many points.

Field, not too long ago I would have agreed with you. I was prepared to hold my nose and vote Hillary, even after the appalling comments that followed Obama's primary win in my home state of SC.

Not anymore. As the primary has progressed it's been one outrage after another from her camp. McCain is ready but Obama is not. Obama isn't a Muslim "as far as I know". NAFTA and CAFTA. And omg, the accusations that Obama is the one playing the race card. All this before we even get to the revelation that nuking Iran is on the table.

I'm done with her. Done. It's hot here under the bus, and the exhaust fumes are getting to me. Supreme court justice isn't going to matter if the jobs are still in China and we're still at war with someone or other.

Should it become necessary:

Field, I think that Mrs. Clinton, for being an unapologetic fake and using republican tactics to take out the O-Man, deserves to be House Negro of the Day. Let's just hope that she didn't give Mr. Morton the keys to the White House in the process.

Well keeping in mind this Plan B (because Plan A is Obama with the democratic nomination) - My plan B is to write Obama in.

I agree with you 99%, Field. I diverge only on Minimum wage - higher please.

As others have pointed out far more eloquently than I, I cannot reward Billary and the DNC for these last few months of silly season. Riykah at JJP is right - to vote for Billary is to give a pass on the ish of the last few months. Its a lasting legacy, a blueprint of how to beat the crap out of the candidate of color. Cause you know as important as the next Supreme Court Justice is our continued infiltration into Congress.

Field

Are you trying to help Hillary with the Suerdels?

If Hilary manages to steal the nomination, I had intended to follow Field's lead, being unable to vote for McCain. However, with Hilary's Iran posturing, I'm not sure they are any longer that far apart. Further, a vote for Hilary reinforces the clinton "right" to the throne and reinforces with success all the nasty machinations that brought her to that place. This is what I've been thinking... if it came to that... why not a massive, grass roots WRITE IN campaign???

Brother Field Negro.
Come with me for a second, brother. I'd like to take you on a journey as I talk with you.

Let's talk a second about "our people". Where we have come from. Where we are......Where we ultimately want to be as a people. This is in the context of our citizenship in the USA but also our place in the world to an even greater extent.

Before we can ever think to achieve this more positive and DIRECTED end, brother Field Negro - I have come to the conclusion that we must first start out with a deep and honest conversation WITH OURSELVES, brother.

Lets step out of our "bodies" and fly over the Black populace, evaluating their political activism. Can you honestly say that they are WORKING TOWARD EXPRESSING THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS or are they fight against a POWER that they are popularly against.....are they reside in their current AGGRIEVED STATE? Can one claim that "FIGHTING AGAINST" is the same thing as "FIGHTING FOR" when it comes to implementing and expressing one's BEST INTERESTS?

Let us now fly over the "shaded green areas" of the US map. This is where there is a high concentration of Black folks. Just so happens that these locations are also the MOST INTENSE DEMOCRATIC PARTY STRONGHOLDS. These are the areas with the fewest competition of IDEAS as expressed during the election process.

Above you say McCain only needs to "suppress Black voter turn out" to win. This indeed might be favorable to his agenda to win the presidency as a Republican.

I wonder, however, if this bodes well for Black folks? Not the idea of suppression but more importantly the idea that there is a RACIALLY IDENTIFIABLE LINKAGE between Black folks and our voting patterns? Worse yet when we look at the CONDITIONS of many of our communities and schools the question must be asked.........WHAT THE HELL ARE WE GETTING OUT OF THIS POLITICAL ACTIVISM which is certainly POPULAR? Is it EFFECTIVE at achieving our goals though?

As a native of Philly who knows your city well I can say it not just "No" it is "Hell No!!".

It appears that the pacification received in the short run by the victories of the beloved Democrats don't turn into LONG TERM benefits for Black folks.

Do not get me wrong. I respect the Democrats. They are a very effective organization at executing their goal to OBTAIN and PRESERVE POWER. The problem that I have is with Black operatives who make our people believe that THEIR INTERESTS are OUR INTERESTS as they look past the damnable evidence that proves them wrong.

Without some INSIDERS to CHECK THEIR BEHAVIOR they will continue to have their way with our people. We suffer.
