I was sitting in McCormick & Schmick's, a very fine seafood restaurant in Philly a couple of days ago, and I was trying to talk shop with a fellow attorney over lunch. It's easy to get distracted these days. For instance, we can get distracted by the cell phone while we are trying to drive. Parents can get distracted by their children while they are trying to talk on the phone; loud people can distract us all in public; and an attractive Nubian can distract us damn near anywhere.
Still, the folks down in Mississippi have taken this distraction thing to a whole different level. You all know the story by now: .A young lady who happens to be Gay has created a stir at her -very red state- school, all because she wants to go the prom with her partner in a tuxedo. This being northern Mississippi, the folks at the school decided to cancel the prom because they say it would be distraction. I mean I know the folks in Mississippi don't take to women wearing tuxedos too well, but why do I get the feeling that this isn't about the tuxedo?

The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

You first talk about how rights are defined in a society then move onto talking about the Middle East and invoke Jordan where they do not have a constitutional system of government. From what I've read, most places in the middle east act as theocracies and or have a royal family. Your arguments make no sense in that context because those systems of governance are not run by the majority at all, nor have they ever been.
I recall seeing the Queen of Jordan make impassioned pleas to stop honor killings. Her impassioned plea will do and has done more to affect the minds of her subjects than ANYTHING we could do as outside Westerners. I have been quite involved in women's rights issues throughout the years and the one thing I've found is that foreign places do not want the US or any Westerners telling them how to live their lives, how to treat their women and children or anything else.
Regarding female circumcision, an African activist who had a clitoridectomy once told me that Western intervention makes the women want to hold onto the tradition even more because they see their way of life being threatened.
All of this to say that I certainly DO care about people more than any ideology. But I also respect the design of the democratic republic.
In Uganda they want to outlaw homosexuality and make it a crime punishable by death. I think that is wrong to kill a person for their lifestyle. However, the Ugandans have a fundamental right to vote whatever they wish to vote because that is how a democratic republic works.
My suggestion would be that any gay Ugandan who wants asylum should get it in the USA or elsewhere. But I don't advocate trying to change the mind of those people either. I think societies evolve to an equilibrium in time and they do best without western intervention, usually...

FWIW, I lived in California during the Prop I campaign. The gay activists were out tearing down Prop 8 signs and throwing them in the trash. I went to our local county meeting and spoke out against a tax increase, because most families in our community are really hurting and trying to hang on.
I also had a lot of stats to back up my position that funding alone doesn't equate to results. The teachers unions were all lined up demanding a tax increase, but none of their comments were directed at why these additional funds were for the children -- because they weren't.
I am not a supporter of our local school board, because they are not interested in any innovations in education that are proven to help kids, esp. poor kids who haven't had access to the same opportunities better off kids have had.
FWIW, we pulled our kids from the local well funded school system and sent them to a school with much less in frills but much more in academics.
One of my sons was really struggling in math because he's learning disabled and his brain is not "wired" for math.
When we pulled him out, we went to the "what works" national educational clearinghouse and bought an online math program from New Orleans that was designed to help minority kids. My total cost for 4 textbooks (math fundamentals, pre-algebra, algebra I and algebra II) and access to the online learning site was $369, including all taxes and shipping. Our local school board charges $450 to parents for one online course.
This is the same kid who then went on to get a degree in engineering and aviation science and now flies for a major airline.
At his IEP meeting, the local school board told me they were only obligated to help him once he had failed grade 6 math three years in a row. That was unacceptable to us.

We just left Northern California and I can assure you that the behavior of all types of people there is not typical of the rest of America.
I've had my car badly vandalized in the Bay Area because it has a military decal on it. No offense to you, but I can, and I will. It's not just the Bay Area, but my experiences with racism from gays througout CA. It has been enough to convince me that putting myself on the line in support of a group that degrades me is not in my best interest as a black person.
But you may be right..maybe the level of consciousness and civility here of gays might be different in other parts of America. I doubt it, but if so, that says a lot about the mind and heart of gays in general, when you consider the Bay Area and CA has one of the largest population of gays in the USA.

I had to go out and live my offline life for a while and didn't run away;) NO I don't believe that violence against women is sanctioned at all in Middle Eastern countries, and I think you extrapolated from what I said. I simply believe that any struggles for peace and equality for women in those societies must be addressed BY the women that live in those societies themselves.
Otherwise any gains made in areas of equality will go away as soon as the Western NGO leaves the area. What we can do as so called Western nations is to support causes overseas in which we believe and or show up and ask what we can do to help, rather than tell them which laws to pass and how to run their countries, which is a problem...
This is why I feel so strongly about Uganda. Western interventions have effectively gutted that part of Africa for a number of years and now the Ugandans had a civilized election and voted according to their belief system. Yes I disagree with their vote, but do I have the right to impose my viewpoints on them with a separate cultural heritage and different mores?
That is the problem with this discussion. One side believes that marriage is a RIGHT to any two consenting adults and the other side believes marriage is a privilege subject to the constraints of the majority morals in the society. I believe in the latter definition.
This is why consenting adults who are brother and sister cannot marry- a societal taboo on incest, a man cannot marry his ox- a societal taboo on beastiality. Other societies have strong moral prohibitions on specific sexual practices; it isn't just gays, it is also those who are adulterers and others...
With that said, the other main issue is whether or not we have a right to impose our brand of morality on the rest of the world. And I am not sure that we do.Marriage is a states rights issue. If someone from Mississippi tried to come and impose their brand of morals on a person in San Francisco, there would be total hell to pay. Everybody in SF would mobilize to protest that. Same principle applies in the reverse. The people of Mississippi live in the BIBLE BELT they have a developed sense of morals that they've codified into LAW.
Therefore if the ACLU gets their way, it will be suppressing the voice of the people of MS. I don't like that fine line and I know that the people of MS will be mad if by judicial fiat they are obligated to breach their belief system...
Oh to respond to anonymous comment stating that I believe in the majority so I don't have to take personal responsibility for my actions...Nothing could be further from the truth. It might make you laugh at the irony of this conversation if you knew that I voted NO on Prop 8 in California because I felt that it was incompatible with how the citizens of our state defined marriage as a right between two non related adults. Other states restrict the definition further, but given the population of my state, a broader definition of marriage makes sense.
Bottom line, don't go to aplace and expect them to change their behavior and belief system even if you sue them to do so.

If the gays had tried to reach out to the black community maybe Prop 8 would not have passed. But no one bothered to communicate with us. Many Blacks wondered why? Personally, I don't think the pronouns matter (she/he) when it comes to God. God created male and female so I doubt that the creator is one or the other.
I've been catching up on this thread, and I got to say I agree with AB that arguments of "law" and "the will of the voters" ring hollow. After the Reconstruction south white voters, who were the MAJORITY, voted for Jim Crow laws which stripped away the rights of blacks. For a long time the "majority" of voters were cool with women not voting. And it took an acts of congress for national civil rights laws to be passed. If we were waiting on the moderate white voters to "do the right thing" we would still be waiting.
I don't know all the answers here. Clearly this issue is a huge divide. However, I do know injustice when I see it. I don't think laws should be passed that strip away the rights of citizens. I don't think discriminatory laws should be upheld, even if the "majority" thinks it's ok. We shouldn't dictate how people live their lives. After all, the constitution said we have a right to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". Not exactly words advocating an authoritarian conservative regime.
I think laws should follow two principles, protect the rights of citizens to live how they see fit and to protect the safety of citizens with regards to crime.
How could a lesbian couple at a high school dance in Mississippi possibly be a distraction? One would think that all the big hair and incest is so distracting that they wouldn't have time to notice anything else.
