Night out.

Tonight was an interesting night in the "city of brotherly love". The weather was nice so you know white folks were losing their natural minds. Center City's out door cafes and eateries were jam packed, and there was a serious buzz in the air. Part of it is because the Mets and the circus is in town (same thing), the Sixers will soon start a playoff series, and the Flyers are up 3-1 on the Caps in the hockey playoffs.

And, of course, part of it was because the "O" man was giving a huge outdoor rally at Independence Square. No I didn't go, but I was about six blocks away at a black professionals happy hour, put on by my man Sulaiman Rahman; who happens to be the founder and CEO of Urban Philly.com. He introduced me to one of the "O" man's senior campaign advisers, Rick Wade, who got an earful from the field about Philly politics, and what his boy was and wasn't doing right. He seemed pretty cool (although he admitted he as a little lacking in his knowledge of the blogging phenomenon), and I promised to call him and set up an interview for my blog. Not! That isn't going to happen of course, unless his name is Lark Voorhies I won't be wasting his time or mine. Sorry Rick, it must have been the "Coronas".

So anyhoo, the ice Queen was out in Radnor on the Main Line (how appropriate, I will say why in a minute) shilling for the blue blood crowd. And she was pretty fired up from what I could tell from the sound bites. No doubt she was feeling frisky after the beat down ABClinton gave the "O" man.

I hung around Center City until I couldn't take it anymore. ( I was way past my 12% quota but they were "professionals" so I let it slide) Finally I dipped out and headed home.

Now I am home again and reading my latest issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine. This is when I see an article by Matt Taibbi, who happens to be a pretty good writer. Folks, if you can get a hold of this, run to your nearest magazine stand. He talks about how the "Ice Queen loves to dole out taxpayer dollars and gets mad dollars from the companies she does favors for. I knew that. So did everyone else in A-merry-ca. What I didn't know, was that Reverend Calvin Butts, the pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, endorsed Hillary in a very public way. No problem there, he can endorse anyone he wants to (Although I am always suspicious when preachers endorse politricksters). But then I read further and found out that Hillary steered $1.5 million in tax money to the churches youth programs. Now I am sure the good Rev. does some good things with his youth programs, but just once I would like to see a preacher or a politician do something out of real conviction and not for the money.

I bet they are still cheering out on the main line.

Well, while you were smoozin, I was one of the 35,000! people who stood for 4 hours waiting to see Obama. Will.I.am sang a song, but mostly, we were listening to canned music, enjoying the unusually warm weather and the company of fellow Obama supporters.... while I was waiting, a had an interesting conversation with one of the media folk for a national media outlet who was a part of the traveling media with the campaigns. He told me, from what he has seen traveling around the country, that he has little doubt that Obama is going to be our next president..... the shear numbers of people who come out for Obama, the energy and excitement he generates at these events... Hillary and her events pales in comparison.... Yes We Can is still ringing in my ears......

Field,

Well done. I have been a fan of your site for awhile but haven't posted much. Glad to see someone give Matt Taibbi some credit as he has been someone who is calling the election like it is. His appearences on Real Time were pretty spot on I thought when it came to the "real" story. We need more people calling "bullshit" when "bullshit" must be called!Keep up the good work mate. We at the Illiterate Electorate enjoy your work immensely. Peace.

Oh, how ever did the Shill manage to wash her coal mining roots in Scranton clean enough for the clench jaws on the Mainline?

I was invited to a Hillblazers shindig (all the hall monitors are going, doncha know?) but I said I had to make wise use of my time so as to keep working out there for our next President. Honestly, I'm so loopy right now that I might slip and tell folks that "if she had to blow Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfield at the same time to get back in the White House, she would drop down faster than they could blink".

Jody,
That is wonderful what that media guy said to you and I'm gonna take that to sleep with me tonight.

1. I'm sorta sad you didn't join 40,000 of your fellow citizens, FN. I think if you had, you would have finally swallowed the Kool Aid. I know looking at the pictures and videos just reinforces why I'm for The ' O' Man.

2. Reading on your sidebar, are you serious? Are you fucking serious that Fixed Noise did a 2 week investigation on Dr. Wright's house?

I've been saying, like, what, for forever, that Trinity was full of STRIVERS like Barack and Michelle Obama. The overwhelming majority of Trinity's Members are THE TALENTED TENTH...and you don't think they wouldn't take care of their beloved retiring pastor? Does that make any kind of sense to anyone else?

See, those of us here in Chi-town, who have been dealing with the right wingers who began writing about Trinity when Obama began his run, said that those right wing White folks who went to Trinity, just couldn't handle it. They couldn't handle it from the moment they saw the parking lot with all the letters on the cars (if you know what I mean).

Then, stepping into a beautiful, architecturally different multi-million dollar chapel, with a huge stained-glass BLACK JESUS just probably sent their hearts racing. If they showed up the Sunday out of the month where the congregation is encouraged to wear African dress, they went hysterical....adding in the prophetic sermon of Dr. Wright, just pushed them over the edge.

Wasn't no ' oh woe is me Jesus' from Trinity. It was ' we're gonna take care of things for ourselves on Earth and not kiss anybody's ass to do it either'....which scares a certain kind of White person.

1748 (in Chesterfield's "Letters"), but rare before c.1800 as an Eng. institution, from Fr. piquenique (1692), perhaps a reduplication of piquer "to pick, peck," from O.Fr., or the second element may be nique "worthless thing," from a Gmc. source. Originally a fashionable pot-luck social affair, not necessarily out of doors. Figurative sense of "something easy" is from 1886.

Field-Negro:

If Clinton is doing so and is worthy of critique could you tell me how you expect your boy "O" to create the jobs that many HOPE that he can despite no track record of doing so? Instead of "tax breaks" do you figure he is going to REGULATE them into creating jobs?

Let me back up a minute and show a global flaw of the left. You all PROMOTE Barack Obama by ATTACKING someone else's REALITY. Thus the story is about Bush's failures in Iraq as compared to what BARACK OBAMA WOULD HAVE DONE. Clearly you all are compared "reality" with "HOPE". Hope only wins in the MINDS of the faithful.

Field-Negro I would be far more interested if you or your Philly "O" Operatives could give fine details about how their favored candidates are going to make you happy.....beyond just their PRESENCE in power.

As I listened to the fallout from the debates the other night - it is interesting that you all were pissed at the questions that Obama was asked. I wonder - as you all envision President Obama - what type of questions do you figure the leaders of Venezuela or Iran will ask Obama and are you going to send angry letters to these countries as you seek to protect his feelings?

It is clear that the issue is not "is Obama ready to be president". The question is "are you all ready to allow him to be president.....and expect him to deal with all of the negative attacks that come with it?"

In my inspection of the far left - the answer is clearly HELL NO.

Let me tell you what Iran would have to say -- it is exactly what they told GW after 9-11. "How do we buy in?" They don't want to be America's enemies -- and it's good for neither country. America ought to support democracies, not dictatorships.

Clinton was known for disarming foreign leaders with domestic talk (liked to compare notes and trade ideas). I don't quite see Obama being that much of a policy geek.

Oh, and Philly? I loved the idea of that spontaneous march through the streets.

"...the reason we are p[issed is that a week before an important election the moderators tagteamed with one candidate and the opposing party."

I co-sign with that statement, Andy. But maybe what should bother us more is something that few commentators have mentioned, the difference in the way the press goes after Obama and Clinton. Yes, the press, notably Tim Russert from MSNBC, has asked questions to trip up Hillary or to catch her in a lie-- "gotcha questions." But the questions to Obama are not gotcha questions so much as questions to tie him to a particular person (Rev. Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Jessie Jackson, Bill Ayers, etc.) or group (The Weather Underground, etc).

To be sure, ABC's primary interest was to get high ratings for two hours. But beyond that, Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolis wanted to implant in white voter's of Pennsylvania and Indiana that Obama is tied too closely to radical or leftist groups and is little more than just another angry black man (just like Rev. Wright or Rev. Jessie Jackson) and thereby make Hillary a more attractive candidate.

Through 45 minutes of non-issue, non-sensical, guilt-by-association questions, what George and Charles were saying to white voters is clear: "Don't vote for this guy. He's just another angry black guy, another leftist. Hey, he's not even patriotic!"

This goes beyond Obama. Forget Obama; this is about democracy, or what's left of it. Check it: Any of us with even a cursory understanding of American history should hate this. Remember: guilt-by-association was the primary weapon in Joe McCarthy's propagandist war against liberals and progressives of the 1950's; and he destroyed the careers and lives of countless Americans. You couldn't even go to a public meeting without being suspected of either being a communist or associating with a communist, supposedly a "red" to be feared like the plague, a person to be hated almost as much as a black (ALMOST!).

During the McCarthy era, they didn't just go after political activists like Paul Robeson, they went after the press, hollywood producers, directers, and actors like Humphrey Bogart. They went after great writers like Langston Hughes. Some were imprisoned. Some were "blacklisted," meaning they couldn't get a job. Most were cowed into silence.

Now, the press, with the complicity of Bill and Hillary Clinton's campaign and the chickenshit leaders of the democratic party, are using the same McCarthy-like guilt-by-association tactic to keep Obama from getting the democratic not for president. Failing that, they want to make sure that he doesn't get elected so Hillary Clinton can run again in 2012.

This press, by the way, includes the so-called liberal New York Times, who said little or nothing about George and Charley's antics; and one of them David Brooks, gave George and Charles an A for their efforts.

In the final days of the McCarthy hearings, a fellow congressman, I believe, asked McCarthy after he had bashed yet another witness: "Have you left no dignity, sir?"

Maybe that's what we should be asking The Clintons, Gibson, Stephanopolis, and the US corporate press in general: Have you left no dignity?

Mac Daddy Tribute Blog said...

The congressman asked, "Have you left no decency, sir?" Not dignity. Sorry.

Don't concede the Main Line to Hillary yet. She needs it for the cash only. The votes are meaningless.

And Macdaddy, thank you for channelling John Welch from 1953 to McCarthy and his thugs. That plus Murrow knocked this fool out of the box. Indeed, that's one reason the wingnuts are still mistrustful of McCain: they think he'll either flip out, or become Eisenhower.

There's a difference. Black people eating watermelons is a real stereotype. White people losing their minds when the weather is nice is a fake stereotype that Field made up for humourous effect.

(Or at least I think it is. Maybe black people mock the shit out of white people regularly with this stereotype and I'm just an oblivious white dude who has no clue.)

@Kid:
"Sorry to tell you this but picnic is a french word.."

Hey Kid, do you really believe that when I posted my remarks that I didn't know the etymology of the word?

It was the other use--"but the term has a double meaning"--that I wished to bring to light.

It's my guess that the term "picnic," despite its French origin, was adapted to this specialized use: black lynchings where the deceased bodies were often brutally burned and body parts handed out as trophies to attendees.

Since a black lynching was often a festive occasion, the term "picnic" was probably used to refer to the occasion because it lent itself to the moment, and because of its similarity to the words "pick a nigga."

As a result, the term "picnic" carried with it a dual meaning for whites, and a horrific meaning for blacks.

The post served my purpose: to generate a little thought on an American past that wasn't all that long ago.

I was curious to know what part of my comment would generate the most concern--the derivative accuracy of the term, or what it represented to blacks during that time.

Thanks for your input.

And Bob - I am sure that you would no doubt choose to live in Iran or Venezuela while being presided over your "ideological soulmates" that lead these nations.

By the way Bob - have you noticed that in the past 2 months:

1) Hugo Chavez PRAISED $100 oil? He said that this is a fair price for a scarce resource.

the other day

2) Iran's Ahmadinejad said: "Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says oil valued at $115 per barrel is priced too low.

State media reported his comments Saturday, as Iran hosted the Thirteenth International Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industries and Products Exhibition. Mr. Ahmadinejad said $115 a barrel is "a deceiving figure." He said oil is a strategic commodity that needs to discover its real value."

I am sure that George W. Bush is saying - "Simply freeking amazing!! These two clowns enjoy praise from the leftists and they say nothing about them regarding the price of oil but these same leftists attack ME, claiming that it is the fault of me and my 'oil buddies' in the American oil firms that are driving up the prices".

Oh well. I am sure that this theory will be tested when we have "President Obama" FIGHTING American oil companies but going around the world, shaking the hands of our enemies. (I should correct this - the enemies while America was lead by the Right wing. Now that WE have changed for the better these ENEMIES are now our friends. Now as far as that long time friend ISRAEL...........)
