"That's foolish talk." That is how Chris Matthews described what Bobby Jindal, governor of one of my favorite states,Louisiana, was saying about the stimulus package on "Meet The Press" on Sunday. Unless you have been on another planet for the past few days, I am sure you have heard by now that Jindal and some other republican governors are refusing to take some of the stimulus money. A move so breathtakingly stupid that you really have to wonder if these clowns live in some kind of parallel universe. Bobby, I am quite familiar with your fine state, I have a personal connection to it, and I am here to tell you that you can use the money. I know that you have national political ambitions, and that you want to grandstand and show that you can stare down the O man to all your republican pals nationwide. But there are some unemployed people in Louisiana who could use some of that money, and your obligation is to them, not partisan republicans nationwide. Where I am from that's called "cutting off your nose to spite your face". Hey field, we are going to give you that Audi R-8 5.2 you always wanted. Nah, I don't think I will take it, it has a Bang & Olufsen sound system and I wanted the Burmester. Bobby, trust me on this one, do like your republican colleagues in Florida and California and take the money. The way things look from here you don't eat too much, but there are plenty folks in your state who can't afford to miss a meal.
The next "foolish talker" is one Jim Bunning. (What the hell has gotten into republican senators lately?) This genius actually told a group of supporters that Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader-Ginsberg should die in nine months from her pancreatic cancer. "Bad cancer. The kind that you don't get better from.." This, apparently, was reason enough for his supporters to hold out hope to get a conservative judge on the bench, soon. Here is a news flash for you Jim: the president who will be making that selection is one Barack Hussein Obama, so not only are you an insensitive jerk, but you are an ignorant one as well.
And finally, there is Alan Keyes. There are people who talk foolish and do foolish things, but we don't mind them living among us, the sane. Not my friend Alan, who --and I mean this sincerely--should be locked away in an insane asylum far far away from the rest of us.

Alan Keyes is a nutcase. There's nothing really else to say about it. That man is gone gone gone.
It's as if they hope the people will start to believe that the it was really the democrats who caused this mess and not the profligate spending of Bush and his republican enablers.
And as per last nights post, this was IMHO the best Oscars in a long time. Hugh Jackman's jokes were not self serving and self conscience. The winners were given ample time to acknowledge and thank without the rude music telling them to shut up and get off the stage. They interspersed the commercials rather than front loading them. And they finished ahead of time. And the tributes from former winners was inspired.
Kudos.
Well, if we are listing the loonies... add Fox News Glen Beck, who evidently hosted a show of "experts" to pontificate about the coming civil war.... he prefaced the hour by saying "I'm not saying it will happen, I am saying it could happen." Then proceeded to spend the rest of the time laying out what he thinks will happen.
Alan Keyes is desperate to be relevant... He is the biggest joke of them all.
I must say, after all the years we endured these guys being the Shrub's cheerleaders, it is rather delicious watching them come unhinged now that their politics are seen for the fringe element that they are.
Even George Bush thought Alan Keyes was Insane. So, that pretty much let you know that Keyes is just plain NUTS.
Gee..I wonder why the Republicans didn't make Alan Keyes the head of RNC instead of Steele...lol
Field, it isn't cutting off your own nose to spite your own face, it is cutting off the noses of the poor people who already have their noses to the grindstone because you don't want to wear out the grindstone so fast.
It is like Mugabe of Zimbabwe turning away food aid because it isn't organic and because there aren't enough privies for the people to shit in if they have something to eat.
Field I wondered who let Alan Keys walked aimlessly to stumbled onto the media to speak. The man is mentally ill or maybe his mother dropped him on his head when was small child. I also wondered why his wife continues to stay with him uneless she is more insane than he. And there is something very dangerous about his statement as you have people are feeling wronged about the election. If you have not seen the HBO Riight America Feeling Wronged, I recommend it.
As for Bunning, in his apology to the Justice, his staff sent out the statement with her name spelled incorrectly (very betise'), The hit parade just keeps on coming.
hennasplace, I saw that show on HBO. It was very funny. I think it was Pelosi's daughter who produced it.
deadalus2u, the Mugabe analogy is a pretty good one.
You know what gwpriester, I have heard some other folks saying what you did about the Oscars. Although I am not sure about the best picture. Still, I will wait until I see it to before I judge.
Our state's dem gov has admitted billions of money will not be recieved from the Gubment because it's law that the state budget must be balanced and the entire education system is financed ahead of time.
Just my one cent, adjusted for challenging economic times.

Bob Jindal is a self-centered heartless governor. He is for himself and no one else. When it comes to loving African-Americans, Bobby Jindal and David Duke are kissing cousins. Has he ever been responsive to Blacks in his state?
I don't think that Jindal should be governor of ANY state. This outrageous hurtful move by him should end his career.
Alan Keyes is an on-stage political shock jock. He may be a nut case, but all shock jocks are nut cases.
I really want to understand the republicans. I want to understand their argument. If they have some relevant point to make, I want to hear it. because right now they are not making any sense to me. I don't want to brush them off, but they need to start making sense.
As for Alan Keyes...well, he scares me lol What is wrong with that man? Obama wins and people start losing their goddamned minds! get yourselves togetehr children! lol
Field:
Thanks for bringing this up. Alan Keyes is an unhinged, Nazi-admiring jerk who likes to hear himself talk more than anyone else does. The man has run for office and lost badly so many times, I'm shocked that anyone still gives him a forum to spew this stuff. He hates anyone who disagrees with him, and he is just a bizarre person. I don't know what woman would stay married to a person like him. I guess there really is someone for everyone.
Bobby Jindal is nothing but a "brown" person that the Republicans can trot around and prove that they are "tolerant". Its like watching a grown-up version of the Telephone game; every Republican feels the need to mention this guy in their speeches, even if it has nothing to do with the current event. He's just a "me too" response to Barack Obama, but Obama blows this guy out of the water. Jindal has a shoddy record in Louisiana, closing health care clinics (in the poorest areas) throughout the state all in the name of the Almighty dollar. Jindal has done nothing and has been in office for 1 year and 1 month, yet the right wants him to run against Obama in 2012 (I know, I was laughing too). Why? He's a puppet for special interests and is a complete extremist on abortion matters. He thinks that women who are raped should be forced to carry a child to term if they get pregnant. He thinks its OK to cut elderly folks from Medicare, but then talks about reforming health care? Republican doublespeak. Also, you are right. Louisiana needs the money more than any other place I can imagine, but Jindal is more interested in appeasing James Dobson/Rush Limbaugh/Tony Perkins/Grover Norquist worshippers than doing his job. He's nothing but a follower, and the Republicans think that we're supposed to take him seriously?
What can I say about Jim Bunning? His own party doesn't even want him to run for re-election next year. He's a really weak candidate with a thin Senate record and hopefully he will be out of office soon. The talk about Ginsberg dying was disgusting and crass, but you can't expect anything other than hate and vileness from the right. Its the only way they know how to operate.
There are many conservatives who think Bobby Jindal
is the future of the party! Here's a guy who wants to turn down money while he's the head of a third world state. On top of that, he doesn't believe in evolution: Jindals just one more creationist crack pot in a party that has become marginalized.
I am surprised that Alan Keyes doesnt have his own show on Fox News already.
Rick Santelli is now claiming the White House threaten him and his children are nervous to go to school.
It's gonna be a good year for Psychiatrists!!!!!!!!!

Brother Field,, isn't it not funny that the people making thess BOLD decisions have the means whereby they dont't need the money. Wish there was a way that the federal government could have a direct means to provide this needed stimulus to the men/women that have lost jobs. I quess with the poor history the feds have with lots of programs this may not work until we have caring people in positions. Now it may be every man for himself...thats why Prez Obama calming demeanor will be an asset in the coming days. PS Soon.. you will have more readers than your city's two newspapers. :}
What up?
Like I wrote elsewhere, you have to excuse old Alan. You see he found out a couple of weeks ago that the rethugs have found themselves a NEW NEGRO(Oreoman).
Now he has to scream louder and scream more outlandish stuff so he can hold one of the NEGRO spots. You know they have a limited number.
And Alan already lost his black card and he knows we won't take him back.
Clowns like Jindal are gambling that the stim won't work, or that if the economy improves they can somehow convince Americans that the stim had nothing to do with it.
Hey Field, you left off Sen Shelby who all of a sudden wants to question President Obama's citizenship now.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/22/richard-shelby-alabama-se_n_168913.html?page=49&show_comment_id=21188014#comment_21188014
Ok, i scrolled the side and see you have Shelby in the right place today.
I live in New Orleans and I know how much we need that money. Jindal is ridiculous. It's embarassing the kind of people that keep getting elected here. Someone better knock some sense into him before it's too late. When I heard about his grandstanding, it made me sick to my stomach.
WildMagnolia:
I have family that lives in New Orleans and other parts of the state of Louisiana. Don't worry his grandstanding is gone him to lose the next term.
Sorry for the errors. I hope you can make out what I said.
I don't know what type of dope or dynamite Alan Keyes is on, but he needs to go somewhere and sit his tail down and hush. That goes for Steele too. On the other hand, let them do what they do. Let them self-destruct and expose their hand. All things are coming to the light. It's about time.
People are going to look back on this time in history and call it the year when the light was shined in crooked places. Yup, no stone will be left unturned, because folks gone get to see all the snakes crawl from under their rock in plain view. Their crawling out now. Pay attention!
Wow is Alan going to join the KKK? I'm not sure if they would let him join though.
Field wrote "...like your republican colleagues in Florida and California and take the money."
Ah, come on Arnie is hardly at all Republican except in the name. The Gouvernator of California sure showed all of the people that he is an actor, he surely isn't doesn't act like the rest of the Republicans. We star struck fools here in California surely like our actor politicians, at least this is one we cannot foist off on to the rest of the country. (I think he really wanted to help though.)
A few years back in the book "Primary Whites" Alan Keyes was described as "Clarence Thomas on acid" and "the brother from another planet". So he hasn't changed..
The Republicans want to throw up every roadblock they can to Obama's policies. More than that, some of them really refuse to recognize him as the legitimate President. They did the same thing to the Clintons, with all the tall tales of supposed lurid land deals and murder in Arkansas.
They are hoping that the economy doesn't get better in the next two years or if it does no one associates that with the President.
I don't think Obama's stimulus package is foolish, and somehow I'm starting to think Keyes is crazy and just wants attention, to verify that he has a valid opinion.
"I am surprised that Alan Keyes doesnt have his own show on Fox News already."
Stay tuned.
WildMagnolia, I feel you. I am in La. quite a bit, and I know the folks down there are pissed off at him. (He botched the last hurricane relief effort) I was shocked that they elected him in the first place. The guy is so extreme even for a Southern state.
Again with the obsession with Skin Color!!! Y'all just don't like Alan cause he's a REAL Negro, not a Cafe a' Lait one like Barak...Can't we just get along? Didn't somebody have a dream that skin color wouldn't matter??...
OK, I wouldn't give Alan a ride either...He DOES have those crazy eyes, just like the Cook in that 3 Stooges episode...
Pity the Republicans and their supporters in the Obama era.
According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, President Barack Obama is enjoying remarkably high levels of optimism and confidence among Americans about his leadership. This provides him with substantial political capital as he confronts the nation’s economic carnage and opposition from nearly all Republicans in Congress.
A majority of people surveyed in both political parties said Mr. Obama was striving to work in a bipartisan way, faulting Republicans for their response to the president, saying the GOP objected to the $787 billion economic stimulus plan for political reasons. Most said Mr. Obama should pursue the priorities he campaigned on rather than seek middle ground with Republicans.
Americans are under no illusions that the country’s problems will be resolved quickly, but the poll suggested that they will be patient when it comes to the economy, with most saying it would be years before significant improvement.
A month into Mr. Obama’s term, with his first big accomplishments, setbacks and political battles behind him, more than three-quarters of the people polled said they were optimistic about the next four years with him as president. Similar percentages said that they thought he was bringing real change to the way things were done in Washington and that they had confidence in his ability to make the right decisions about the economy.
The aura of good will surrounding Mr. Obama at this stage of his presidency is similar to the one that benefited Ronald Reagan as he led the nation out of economic gloom.
Meanwhile, the Republican party finds itself out of energy, ideas and money. No wonder all they can do is obstruct. Expect even more GOP losses in 2010 and 2012.
Life is good.
Field,
You may find this unbelievable, but I agree with you 100% on every issue.
I hope your happy, now.
;-)

ON POINT.
It is really sad that the Republicans are reduced to letting Michael Steele, Mr. Hip Hop Strategy, and Alan Keyes, a certifiable nutcase, be their spokesmen. Steele is an opportunist and the padded wagon is on the way for Keyes. How they manage to grab the spotlight amazes me. It's really scary, but great for the Dems!
I think that the Republican Party is getting exactly the results that they were designed to get.
I agree with many on this thread that they have no clear route and or mission.
If the Democrats sweep in 2010, I think we will be heading toward a one party system in this country. ( I am not sure that is good.) As of right now, the truth is that the House & Senate does not need the (R) party to support anything they pass. They have the votes they need (even from the liberal Republicans) for nearly any form of a legislation they want to pass.
Garbage in-Garbage out.
I love it when people act surprised and shocked when we end up with a bunch of narcissistic, ideological pricks, in positions of power in this country.
Is that terribly surprising? to quote the late great George Carlin, who said it more eloquantly than I ever could:
Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here...
Remember...we live in a country, where a recent Gallup poll suggested that only 40 percent of Americans believe in evolution. Then everyone turns around and acts shocked that all of the engineering, medical, and scientific jobs keep getting off-shored to places like India.
I'm amazed that nearly half the country buys into logic at all.
Field - Knew you were a man of taste!
Admire that R-8 greatly...
But not greatly enough to drop $125k on a car...
And B&O does seem to be a low ball for a car in this price range. Something more on the order of Mark Levinson or Conrad Johnson would be apropos...
The nice folks in Louisiana aren't too happy about their Rethugly elected "leaders". Apparently, there is a recall effort being mounted against Cao (the man who defeated "Dollar Bill" Jefferson):
http://www.bayoubuzz.com/News/Louisiana/Politics/Louisiana_Congressman_Cao_Faces_Recall_Petition_Over_Stimulus_Vote__8406.asp
Specifically for his vote against the Stimulus Bill.
Jindal has already been the subject of one recall effort - and may be headed for another...
This could hurt.

They all need a face to blame on both sides the Democrats and Rethugs when the ship finally sink.
Mr. Field,
If you keep posting stuff like this, you're gonna loose all your Hooverite readers. . .

Jindal is thinking about rejecting a small portion, some extra money for un-employment benefits, of the stimulus package.
That portion comes with strings attached that would require changes to LA unemployment benefits requirements that would in the long run cost LA more money.
He is accepting all the etra money for un-employment benefits that come without strings attached.
Now, maybe, those LA requirements are long over due for just such a change.
Or maybe it is best to take the money now and worry later.
But is quite reasonable and responsible to refuse money now because it will cost you more in the long run.
Would be it be fair to say that Obama and Democrats needlessly gambled with the well being of the nation's unemployed by attaching the strings?
I wouldn't say that.
But since Jindal almost certainly honestly believes that the extra tax burden from the requirements changes would hurt LA in the long run, I wouldn't accuse him of cynically point scoring at the expense of the least fortunate in order to further his ambitions.
"unless Obama's social and economic policies are stopped, the United States as we know it is over. "
I sure as hell hope so. I'm no historian or economist, so maybe my analysis is overly simplistic, but I look back on 230 years of boom and bust, boom and bust, ad infinitum, each time the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, and think to myself, "There has to be a better way to organize a civilization and an economy." It's a mystery to me why we have tolerated the cycle for this long.
Consumer confidence slid to its lowest level everrrrr in February.
Thanks Obama!!!
Rep. Charles Schumer threw out the big joker on Bobby Jindal's lil Jack of spades......its all or nothing...the stimulus is not the damn salad bar to pick out what you want.
anon 2:31.... you are an idiot. Obama has been in office for one month. One month, idiot.
Like you, an idiot, we had an idiot president who spent the last 8 years running wild, spending not just your money, but your mamas, your baby's and your baby's baby's money. And, then, after his drunken debauchery of spending, and drinking and giving his rich buddies YOUR money and getting in fights.... You want to blame the grown up, who despite the reckless behavior of the past idiot president, has agreed to clean up this mess.
You are an idiot, a childish, immature idiot.
I know a moderate Republican that admires Keyes. But when the subject comes up, he never forgets to mention that Keyes is probably insane.
Don't they realize that they are just setting up the demise of their party? I mean if their hope is in the likes of Sarah Palin or Mick Romney, then they seriously need to look in a mirror. They are doing exactly what Colbert said they should do: Don't take the money if you are against it so much. Doing so will upset alot of people within their states and inevitably draw the ire to their collective parties. Honestly, I think the party needs to return to being about small businesses like in the 50s(Age of Eisenhower) instead of kissing corporate ass.

Alan Keyes, as someone has suggested, is merely auditioning for a spot in "American Idle," where he can be a spokesperson for the no-nothing, do-nothing Republican Party.
Now you can't fault a brother for trying--there's not that many "American Idle" spots at the top for blacks.
America voted, and the results are in....
Here's the Grand Obstructionist Party's position: "To hell with a Stimulus bill designed to put Americans to work.
"Let our old jalopy of an economy run idle for a while. That's the self-correcting thing to to.
"Even without a mechanic, our sputtering economy will be up and running before you know it."
Oh yeah, Alan Keyes would also make one helluva used-cars salesman for the GOP!
The Grand Old spokesPerson's job, I believe...may be already taken.
good luck locking up Keyes. To be fair you'd have to round up 20% of America along with him.
"Field - Knew you were a man of taste!

SLUMDOG GOVERNOR! If any state needs all the help it can get, it is Louisiana. What a tool for the right wing nutjobs! La. deserves better.
Just finished watching Pres. Obama's not-the-State-of-the-Union message. The man is awesome. He even got the Republicans to stand and applaud. He knocked it out of the park.
Sharon in ct, I agree with you. The President was awesome.
SLUMDOG GOVERNOR JINDAL, however, is pathetic. How could the people of LA. have elected him?
You really shouldnt Dis the only pitcher in Phillies history to pitch a perfect game and first oitcher to pitch a no hitter in both leagues.

"SLUMDOG GOVERNOR JINDAL, however, is pathetic. How could the people of LA. have elected him?"
Make no mistake about it. Despite Jindals flop, he is a very intelligent man. He's just not ready for "big league national politics."
The people of LA are a microcosm of people of the U.S. When things are fucked up, people will vote for a candidate of the other party. Katrina caught Blanco with her pants down; hence, the people voted for Jindal.
This isn't an new script. The economy caught Bush with his pants down and we voted for Obama.
