"Extremism in the defense of liberty.."?

Given the nature of my job I could have my license to carry in Philly in no time. I have this friend who is a gun nut, and he is always telling me that he can get me one of those sweet Korth semi-automatic pistols for a good price. "Come on Field, you can afford it, suck it up and spring for a nice piece." Still, I am resisting the urge to arm myself. I am protected by some fine officers during the day, and I have people -on both sides of the law- who would be all too willing to put in some work for the kid. So, for now, I am good. Hear that wingnuts? Limit your numerous threats to the Internet.

But seriously, the way these wingnuts have been acting lately, I don't know, I might have to reconsider protecting myself when I step out the door.

Ever since his O ness got health care reform to pass, these people have been losing their minds. Spurred on by their leaders such as the crazy Queen from Alaska, they have been doing things like threatening congressmen, and throwing bricks through windows. And, they went as far as to cut the gas lines at the home of the brother of a congressman who voted for health care reform. (Hmmm, I guess Virginia isn't for lovers after all.) Poor James Clayburn, I saw my man on CNN this evening and he still looked scared. He told Wolf Blitzer that he was having flashbacks to those civil rights days. He said that he looked in the eyes of the tea baggers and saw the same hatred he saw back then. Yeah, that kind of hate just doesn't happen overnight with the passing of a bill, Jim. No sir, that hate has been there all along. It's just been hiding under the surface and
waiting to come out.

One wingnut, who is the former leader of some Alabama militia, (good luck on that run for Governor, Artur) left this little gem of a message on his web site:

"So, if you wish to send a message that Pelosi and her party cannot fail to hear, break their windows.
Break them NOW.
Break them and run to break again. Break them under cover of night. Break them in broad daylight. Break them and await arrest in willful, principled civil disobedience. Break them with rocks. Break them with slingshots. Break them with baseball bats.
But BREAK THEM.
The time has come to take your life, your liberty and that of your children and grandchildren into your own two hands and ACT.
It is, after all, more humane than shooting them in self defense."

Nice people these wingnuts. They take losing so well. Where the hell is homeland security when you need them? And why aren't we sending their enablers to Gitmo? Isn't that what we would do with al-Qaeda? I am just saying.

Anywhoo, I am going to stay away from rural areas for awhile until these folks calm down. Sorry Mrs. Field, there will be no trips to the mountains this spring. I don't care how nice the shopping outlets are up there. No sir, I will take my chances with the "street pirates" right here in Philly. Flash mobs and all.

I am a process-driven person, and have faith in the system. I do not condone "extra-judicial justice", even though Teh Won chooses to surround himself with people that do (aka, Bill-I-Wish-I-Could-Have-Done-More-Ayres et al).

That being said, in your line of work, I think you are foolish NOT to defend yourself.

I have been beaten and made to beg for my life by my assailant (I refused), my best friend who is an attorney who does family law (lots pro bono) was brutally raped and sodomized with a toilet plunger, requiring hours of surgery by an angry ex, and my dearest friend in the world was stabbed in the jugular with a pen knife while her assailant watched her bleed out in front of him. Note -- no guns were involved in ANY of these acts of violence against women.

My husband's line of work also has him in the cross hairs of crazies -- we no longer can accept regular mail to the house, and one tried to run him down with her vehicle -- so I hear you about the need to balance liberty with personal security.

It took me a long time to get to the arming for self-defense place. I'm not quite at Concealed Carry yet (although it would be more for the Studmuffin's peace of mind than mine), but I have learned how to handle the 870 Remington and go out to the range 2X/mth to practice. You kick in my door, you're going to meet my friend. I won't be a victim in my own home.

These are trying times we live in. It's hard to dial back the paranoia sometimes, but we all have to do our best.

Hugs,
K

As a melanin-challenged child of the 60s, I always thought the "Race War" would start when black folks finally had enough. Somewhat ironic it will be the other way around. It's truly scary to realize the sh!t bubbling under the surface of these crackers' feeble minds. Tea party my sweet white a$$ - more like Necktie Party. I think it was Frank Zappa who said, "I ain't black, but there's a whole lotta times I wished I wasn't white."

Field,

Loved that sidebar story on why John Boehner is so upset; I wondered why he compared the passing of the Health care bill as the start of Armagedden and his comment wasn't spoken about much. I thought it a little over the top, myself. LOL!

I've started this post three times, and three times I've erased it. This is the fourth time. Because I don't even want to say the words. Don't know how to phrase it. I won't say the word, I can't...

I was around in the 60's. I remember my family gathering, much like at the wake of a family member, in silent tears and shock after the loss of JFK. I remember the angaer and the tension ridng the el with my friend the day after MLK's loss. I remember the disbelief at the loss of Malcolm, and I remember the disbelief when the loss of RFK was anounced. America is a violent country, always has been.

The sad thing is, they don't even know that they are pawns.

The people that the tea partiers hate the most, poor blacks and latinos, have more in common them then they want to admit. But it's the admitting it that's the problem.

They are Gullible and Ignorant.

They are the very ones who are on some form of government assistance; Medicare, Government Retirement, Social Security, Medicaid (but that's for all those poor black women, you know.)

A person that lacks ignorance would realize that 71% of the people do not have health insurance work and of those most would have it if it was even remotely affordable.

A person that lacks ignorance would realize that the poor people have Medicaid, so that is not an unproductive member of society problem; it is actually a productive member of society problem. A person that lack ignorance would realize that they already pay for others health care, through higher medical cost, higher premiums and what not, and by making others attain insurance, the government is just making others responsible.

Also, a person that lacks ignorance would realize that people that worked all of their life and then laid off from their job now can not be covered due to the fact they have a pre-existing condition. (Until later this year)

But in the United States of America, you have the right to be ignorant and wrong as fuck.

You have the right to have so-called tea party rallies which are really I-don't-think-that-poor-people-should-get-health-care-especially-the-black-and-the-latinos-because-they-aren't-real-americans-like-us-country-ass-white-folks-party.

I'm all for free speech. These folks need it the most, because it's despicable stuff they're saying. The problem is the line where free speech becomes an incitement to violence, and they have effectively blurred that line. I'm all for letting their racism flag fly high with their effigies; people have done that countless times in the past, it's akin to flag burning. Doesn't mean I want an Amendment prohibiting it. Having it out in the open shows how repulsive these people are and will certainly separate rational people from their cause. Vandalism is clearly illegal and wholly unacceptable, and one has to understand that the Secret Service doesn't take lightly ANY open association with violence and the President, veiled threat or not.

They have had more death threats in this administration that any of the last ones. Asking others to pray for the death of someone is not illegal, however it is incredibly callous and it fosters a dangerous climate because you never know if someone may decide to skip prayer and just do it themselves. Calling a Congressman and wishing for his death is clearly illegal, you'd have to be a fool to do something like that. But despite the hateful atmosphere created by these people, you have to respect the First Amendment up until "fire in a crowded theater" or "fighting words" . Remember what Chomsky said:

"If you're really in favor of free speech, then you're in favor of freedom of speech for precisely for views you despise. Otherwise, you're not in favor of free speech.

Even with that said, I have a dangerous fear that something horrible is going to happen.

May God help us if that comes to pass.

@Gregory & TSC:
(a) people of all stripes are afraid -- really afraid -- right now. Afraid of losing their jobs, their homes, their sense of self. That type of fear is crossing color boundaries. It's not black-white. And with that fear, comes lashing out. It's necessary that ALL the "adults" keep cool heads.

(b) re: The Tea Parties. I don't know what went on @the wknd, b/c I didn't go, but I was at the big rally at 9-12. I was there and watched SEIU bus in min 4 busloads of thugs to try and stir things up. They were confronted, politely surrounded by calm Veterans (yeah, our military rocks!) and escorted away. They are many people who have LOTS to gain by inciting violence -- and not just on the right.

The PTB were absolutely fine w/Malcolm X when he was a radical. When he had a change of heart & viewpoint and wanted to reach out to whites to confront poverty and injustice across racial lines, that's when they capped him.

Divide and conquer as a strategy can't work unless we let it.

As far the Congresscritters that have been targeted: I'm proud of them for keeping their cool. Our family has been there (try telling your kids it's "normal" to have MP's parked in the alley behind your house 24/7). I may be writing some letters of support tomorrow, esp to those across the aisle I don't agree with.

This is what violence begetting violence looks like. The climate of violence in this country has been way too high for far too long.

It also shows that a few small minded people with a microphone can instill whatever they want into empty souls....

I would agree with that except........

The Tea Party movement didn't exist until a black president existed.

Republicans aren't getting death threats.

The Tea Party folks aren't necessarily racists, but racists are finding a home in the tea party. I don't see anyone in the national or local tea party movement disassociating themselves from the racists, so the tea party leaders covertly give consent to the racism.

I guess their sense of self is the notion that the intrinsic benefit of having white skin as an insulation against a lot of society's problems is what the tea party folks are losing. They get to actually work to rebuild this country in a more fair manner, and they really, really don't want to, because they have benefited the most from the status quo.

But I could be wrong.

@Greg:
I think when I talk about "sense of self", I think about personal dignity. When people start losing their jobs, their homes, their ability to provide not only for themselves but for their families, it tears away at the fabric of how they define themselves.

That level of despair and desperation leads to irrationality.

The tempo is increasing, not decreasing. My eldest lives in Sacramento, Ca and the tent city there is growing, and the food bank/soup kitchen often runs out of food with people still in line.

But in the meantime, Lloyd Blankfein and Jamie Dimon collected multi-million dollar bonuses while Teh Won promised he was going to rein in the banks.

There's a big difference between the right to "profit" and government sanctioned financial rape.

Just sayin'

@TSC:
For the record, my anti-gov't activism didn't start with O, it started with the bs war in Iraq in 2003. It only escalated pre-election 2008 with the "Stimulus" etc.

The hardest thing I had to do, as a "mom" was stand on a parade deck and hug several hundred bright-eyed 18 and 19 year olds good bye as they marched off to the Sandbox. I was cheery and upbeat, and then I went home and cried and threw up. And decided I had had enough. "National Defense" is supposed to be just that -- our national defense -- not extending a war of empire and for the benefit of multinational corporations and banks.

As far as the "racism" charge -- I've seen "racism" on both sides of the aisle. I make no secret that I have no love for Teh Won -- all of his policies and platforms make my skin crawl. But, I respect our system and am working within to effect change.

It comes with a bitter note though -- after the election, the Studmuffin's secretary, who is black, immediately put up a picture of the "First Family" on her desk. Her pride was unmistakeable. I get that. I appreciate that. It makes me smile when I see young black pre-teens girls wearing T-shirts proclaiming, "Future American President". I didn't see that pre-O. So, it's a bitter-sweet thing. I'm trying to move beyond the whole "historic black" thing. I was holding out hope for an American Desmond Tutu. You hear that man speak, and the love, and peace and calm and call for justice just washes over you. And inspires you. But that's not what we got. At least, from my perspective.

As far as the whole "white privilege" argument -- that's not how I see it.

I see it as a fundamental struggle between two very different versions of how America is to be governed.

There was a very interesting discussion over at "Mirror on America" where a blogger named Liberal Arts Dude asked the question about the diff btwn a "Republic" and a "Democracy".

I'm all about the Republican (not Republican as in party, but governmental philosophy & organization) ideals of the right to exercise free will and the right to self-determination over the right of Majority rule, which is what Democracy is based on. I prefer to be vigilant about safeguarding the rights of any minority against the potential tyranny of Majority rule.

Does that make sense, or did I ramble too much? Sorry, I'm PUI with the Meritage on tap. ;)

Jody said...

Karen, as I stated in an earlier post, your right to self determination has not been abridged one bit by one policy that has been enacted by the Obama Administration. Free speech and movement have not been attacked. Your free will is not being threatened. What IS being threatened by the Obama administration is the unbridled greed of the top wealth amassers (they are not wage earners in my book)... he is threatening to reform the banks, something ironically the rethugs are already attacking as "threatening freedom".. look behind the curtain and see that the those leading the fight against the Obama's policies are the SAME who for the past 40 years have pushed for deregulation, and tax cuts for the rich... and incredibly have convinced the working class that this benefits them! Reagan's trickle down theories have left most of us being pissed on.... Having been in demonstration after demonstration for the past 20 years and watching people being beaten, tear gassed and arrested, I find it especially ironic that at the demonstrations where Obama appears, there are no arrests.. and there are people carrying friggin guns! He does not screen crowds at his events to ensure that only his supporters are there, unlike Bush...
So please, tell me what specific freedoms do you think are being threatened???
There is an economic crisis happening, no doubt, but I have far more faith in Obama's approach than going back to the Rethugs, who are the bastards that got us here.

@Jody:
Actually, you are sadly mistaken if you think my rights aren't being abridged by the Obama Admin. It's on warp speed. I had issues with the Bush Admin, but this is at a whole.'nuther.level. I have railed against Bush on many an occasion and my advocacy has resulted in the Studmuffin being screamed at, spittle flying, his job threatened, etc, because of "MY" advocacy against the PTB. However, only under the O- have I received a visit from the SS among other things.

And yes, my FREE WILL has definitely been threatened under THIS administration FAR MORE than B & C 2000-2008. I am quite happy to give NUMEROUS examples, but this is FN's blog and I've already been accused of sucking up too much Oxygen.

I hate to prick your balloon, but Obama is paid & owned for by the Banks. The rest is all Kabuki theatre. So was Bush, but Teh Won appears to sold himself far cheaper and is far more malleable.

Jody, to turn this argument around, I have to ask --

(a) our cost per young man/woman sent to the theatre in Iraq/Af is approx $1M per head. O campaigned on bringing the troops home. He has expanded the theatre, in keeping with his master's desires. How would our nation be different if we had spent that $$ ON our young, rather than using it to enrich the same Wall St cronies who were O's biggest funders?
That's even before we touch the collateral costs -- injuries, PTSD etc that our young bear as a result of this "Overseas Contingency Ops" ?? We're going to be paying for this for a long, long, LONG time.

(b) Regarding HCR -- I have worked in ALL levels of health care in a universal payer system, and feel a tad bit qualified to comment. I've also worked @ a Medical assoc'n in govt relations on K Street. In summation: It SUCKS and does nothing but extend further control and drive up costs. I have young adults and DON'T want them saddled with unbearable generational debt -- I want them to have a future.

(c) I agree that there is much that could be done, but the Obama Admin is NOT doing it. So much for "change". Instead of bailing out the banks with TARP, Stimulus, etc .... how would our nation have been different if that $$$ had been directed to small church/community groups (NOT ACORN et al) to funnel DIRECTLY to homeowners? Note, the banks are NOT clearing foreclosures from their books and auctioning inventory b/c they are STILL expecting us to bail them out AGAIN. It's win, they win, lose, we pay. And Obama and Timmy G are playing right along. I have a problem with that. Read some of the economic blogs to get a full understanding of the true shell game/Ponzi scheme that is going on.

And you mistake me if you think I am a cheerleader for the R's. NOT.

Field,

It's a shame that those screaming "Hands off my Healthcare" were being ignored while premiums went up over 100 % between 1994 - 2006, when the GOP completely controlled Congress.

It's a crying shame that those screaming that "Obama is a lying marxist" were ignored when W sent me and my brothers to Iraq to find WMD that didn't exist.

It's a shame that those calling Mr. Obama a "marxist palling around with terrorists" were being ignored when the GOP ignored Afghanistan for seven years - effectively snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

It's a shame that these deficit hawks were ignored when W cut taxes (twice) and created Medicare Part D without ever posturing about paying for it.

It's too bad that these "defenders of the Constitution" were being ignored when the GNoP created an extra-judicial prison in Cuba - which has been an excellent advanced training school for the extremists that want to kill Americans.

It's too bad that those protesting "government tyranny over American citizens" were being ignored when the Supreme Court overturned a century of precedent by equating corporate and union political ads to individual free speech.

Oh yeah, that's right: these teabagging fools didn't say sh!t, did they?

Field don't go out and buy a gun, its a bad idea a lot of folks with guns wind up having them stolen or used on them.

Karen-

I am trying to figure out where you are coming from and am a bit confused.

As you know I am the resident radical on here who believes in neither the Democratic nor Republicans party's ability to do right by working people and people of color. I believe they are what they are the twin parties of the capitalist ruling class.

You talk about freedoms etc., but weren't they also limited under the last administration?

What is Teh Won and what does that mean?

I don't understand why you insist on playing down the bad behaviour which has been displayed quite often by people who have participated in Tea Party rallies.

Folks aren't making it up, which is what you implied when you said you weren't at the big one in DC.

And I have seen the signs and the nasty rhetoric which you have to admit would at least appear to be racist and definitely anti-immigrant.

Its not honest to always imply as you have done twice now that the bad folks or the bad things associated with the TEa Party gathers are the work of interlopers or provacateurs.

You can't keep playing this off. Folks on this blog and I definitely would like someone who participates in Tea Party functions or believes in their cause to at least try to explain what surely seems to be a lot of race baiting and taunting and just hatred coming from that end.

And speaking of things I have seen.I have witnessed personally two Tea Party events and some really nasty things were said.

And as someone who has watched SEIU and worked with them to do some great things for workers I have never heard of them doing what you accuse them of in your post and I mean never. I am not saying you aren't telling the truth but I am quite skeptical.

You come off as reasonable enough so please help me understand what exactly is your beef with the Obama administration and with the government.

You seem like a nice person but the folks you associate with seem filled with malice and don't seem all that ideologically motivated.

BTW I feel your being against the war in Iraq, we can agree on that one. And we can agree that this government has its problems.

Please help me out here you seem to be all over the place.

I feel you on the bank bailout and the war, which by the way I seldom here Tea Party folks or right wing folks condemn.

You are right the homeowners should have been bailed out. A moratorium should have been called by the president.

But the churches don't have the ability to funnel money to folks the point of government is to get it to do what you want.

What did you mean by the SS visiting you? We don't live in a fascist state, at least not yet. We actually still have freedom of speech and expression. Ironically the folks in the Tea Party seem to be even freer to express their opinions.

Why do you think that is? I know you want to argue that point but just do a compare and contrast with other protests.

What is PTB?

What kind of health care system would you like to see implemented. You appear to be opposed to the Universal Health Care that Canada offered and you are opposed to the Health Care Reform Bill. What do you propose?

Karen your ideology is all over the place it almost seems like you favor some kind of anarchy.

Field have you heard about this, coming out of my old stomping grounds of South Florida, check out what this brother said.

From the Miami Herald tonight:

GOP Congressional hopeful calls president Obama Buckwheat

"In the midst of delivering an impassioned speech decrying President Obama's healthcare reform, GOP congressional hopeful Corey Poitier veered dangerously off-script.

``Listen up, Buckwheat -- this is not how it is done!'' Poitier blurted out.

The apparent comparison of the nation's commander-in-chief to a 1920s Our Gang and The Little Rascals character -- a character seen as demeaning and offensive by many African Americans -- sent a jolt of notoriety through Poitier's previously unknown campaign.

``The press has run amok with this and turned me into a racist,'' said Poitier, who is himself black. The candidate complains CNN never bothered to interview him before running its own version of the story. ``I've never seen Buckwheat as a disparaging character. People love Buckwheat.''

Poitier says he and his brother have in fact called each other ``Buckwheat'' as a way to gently chide the other for being foolish -- essentially a substitute for the word ``dummy.''

While speaking to a group of Broward Republicans Monday night, Poitier says he was trying to call the healthcare bill -- not Obama -- ``dumb and silly.'' The candidate says he was initially surprised that the public instead took his comment as directed at the President.

``People can connect anything these days,'' Poitier said.

Poitier is one of nearly a dozen candidates vying to fill the open congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is running for a spot in the Senate.

Poitier is the only Republican running to represent the heavily Democratic district that takes in portions of Pembroke Pines, Miami Gardens and Miami Shores, among other areas."

For your info, there are also black people in MY life, in MY HUSBANDS life, in MY CHILDRENS life, who have been incredible mentors and role models. I would not have gone into pre-med/genetics had it not been for a BLACK PHYSICIAN, my husband learned so much about what it means to mentor Jr troops from a BLACK CO, my daughter went to Pharm school because of the first pharmacist she worked for was incredibly supportive who happened to be BLACK, my son learned about tolerance from a teacher who was BLACK and the daughter of a sharecropper in AL, and guess what ....

these individuals were incredible PEOPLE and generous spirits. Being BLACK was only ONE dimension of who they were.

GO BITE ME and take your bigotry with you.

The Tea Party folks aren't necessarily racists, but racists are finding a home in the tea party. I don't see anyone in the national or local tea party movement disassociating themselves from the racists, so the tea party leaders covertly give consent to the racism.

TSC...You are not wrong, that is exactly what happened to the Tea Party movement. The Republicans are condoning and hiding behind the actions of hate groups that infiltrated the Tea Party, therefore, they are guilty by associating and November is NOT going to go the way they hope.

It is time to put a STOP to these AMERICAN TERRIOSTS!

Hi Field, I decided to respond 'above ground' on this topic. As a 60-year-old African American with working knowledge of IP, Jazz, legislative procedure, police beat journalism, and history written by both the victors and the vanquished, I think you all had better adjust perspective here.

If they'll call a congressman a slur--in congress--what do you think they'll do to YOU. If they'll throw bricks (Kristallnacht II?) at them what do you think they would do to you?
karen? alicia?

If we don't smack this rabid pit bull HARD between the eyes, now, some of you polite negroes you'll be looking for a gangbanger with a glock for protection.
We've always been on the firing line and now that policies they've approved since Reagan are coming home to roost THEY want to get all mad and call my president a natzi?
==
Oh by the way, you notice how you're talking about this crap and NOT talking about how our president (yeah, I said it!) and the speaker of the house thoroughly schooled GOP on the biggest legislative accomplishment since Medicare. Policy-wise it's nothin' but net and in your face to Boehner et. al.
HCR won't change my scene that much but you young negroes won't have to go broke over a broken leg now.

Side note: The good parents here will start telling your kids to consider the medical field. There are going to be a LOT of new openings for young doctors, nurses, and medi-techs considering there will be at least 30 million new people who can actually look after their health now. Lots of community clinics (Thanks to Bernie Sanders, congress' only socialist) which you can gain skill and improve the 'hood.

If we let the brownshirts-in-training intimidate or divert us then....wait....
Sorry, I forgot I was dealing with FN's here. No problem.
Thanks for the forum Counselor.

Brown Dartanyan said...

Of course, with all that said, This version of HCR is pretty much the same one that Bob Dole put forward in 1994 or something like that. Doh!
Just goes to show you how the right-center-left equation shifts over time. Nevertheless, we have a solid foundation on which to build on and young legislators of the future will continue to build on it.
Considering how Obama pulled this off, I think you would be mad at the media for portraying him as a loser when he has proven himself to be a formidable legislative force.
(Oh yeah, those state challenges to HCR's constitutionality will be forcefully rejected by the first president to actually be able to take it to the (doughnut) hole.)
Stunning. and. Thrilling.
Take that GOP!

The Moonie newspaper is just that, Moonie.

The amendments to the bill which concern Congressional and Executive coverage were in fact written by Senators Grassley and Coburn- Republicans.

No conspiracy by Obama, here.
As the President helpfully pointed out, he's the President . He has doctors following him 24-7. So that's not going to change-HCR or no HCR.

But he did say that he would join the insurance exchanges.

Since they aren't set up until 2014, if people really want to see if he keeps his word, they would have to vote him into office again.

Now I am a Christian too, but I always wonder what God they are serving?

My God is not racist, wants all to have health care, cares about the poor, has compassion for the oppressed, etc.

I know that you don't believe in God, but I hope you can make a distinction between those who call themselves Christian (while promoting violence) and those like me (and your wife) who believe that Jesus advocates a life of service and compassion.

I will pray for President Obama's continued safety (the Secret Service kind of makes me nervous) and for the safety of those BRAVE DEMOCRATS who voted for health care reform (which ironically isn't even as strong as progressives like me would have liked).

Interesting comments made by Karen and some anonymous commenters. I totally agree that our President, and the previous Presidents have been coopted by banking interests. This is not rocket science. They took money and gave it to banks while average Americans are struggling. Bottom line. He has no fealty to the American people. Sarah Palin and John McCain have no allegiance to the American people; simply their own egos.

The truth is that many of the people you call wingnuts and teabaggers have legitimate grievances,as most all of us OUGHT to! Privatizing gains and socializing debt is a RECIPE for financial ruin in a society and leads up to total disenfranchisement of the population.

I cringe at many of the policies that our President supports, mainly the incursions into the Middle East and the appointing of banking cartel minions in positions of fiduciary responsibility.

Bottom line; he is a crook. His cronies are crooks. The Republicans are crooks and hypocrites. The lot of them should be tarred and feathered and kicked out of their offices.

I don't advocate violence, but I can see the 'wingnut' logic.

Courtland Milloy: Congressmen show grace, restraint in the face of disrespect
By Courtland Milloy
Wednesday, March 24, 2010; B01

I know how the "tea party" people feel, the anger, venom and bile that many of them showed during the recent House vote on health-care reform. I know because I want to spit on them, take one of their "Obama Plan White Slavery" signs and knock every racist and homophobic tooth out of their Cro-Magnon heads.

I am sick of these people -- and those who make excuses for them and their victim-whiner mentality.

They aren't racists, the apologists say. They just don't like deficits and government takeover of health care. So what does using vile epithets for black or gay congressmen have to do with that? The tea party people didn't refer to white Democrats using racial epithets. No one yelled "white trash" or "redneck cracker" at any of those congressmen. And none of their own ever stands up and declares that such practices are morally wrong.

Reps. John L. Lewis (D-Ga.), Emanuel Cleaver II (D-Missouri), James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and others deserve a hats off for their restraint and composure.

Cleaver told me: "I said to this one person, 'You spat on me.' I thought he was going to say, 'Hey, I was yelling. Sorry.' But he continuing yelling and, for a few seconds, I pointed at him and said, 'You spat on me.' "

How about pointing and declaring: "Spit in my face, fist in yours"? But that's just me.

Cleaver, 66, is a Methodist minister who organized the Kansas City chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (a civil rights organization founded by Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Abernathy).

Cleaver grew up in a house in Texas that had been used as a slave cabin only one generation before, became a congressman serving on the House committee on Homeland Security -- and gets spit in the face from some tea party racist.

And he refuses to press charges, no less.

"I would prefer to believe that the man who allowed his saliva to hit my face was irrational for a moment," Cleaver said.

Have mercy. The preacher walks the walk.

"What I saw on their faces, on the signs, what I was hearing, made me think, 'This is not about health care,' " said Clyburn, 70, who is House majority whip. The son of a minister from Sumter, S.C., he also serves as leader of the House Democrats' Faith Working Group.

"It reminds me of that period in our history right after Reconstruction," Clyburn said, "when South Carolina had a black governor and the political gains were lost because of vigilantism, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan."

Of course, black people are not supposed to have such memories. Forgive -- and forget; that's what we are supposed to do. See, we live in post-racial America now, with a black president and all. So, if anybody is racist, it's black people.

The esteemed Stuart Taylor all but said as much in a 2008 column he wrote for the National Journal.

After discounting the racism at campaign rallies for the Republican presidential ticket, Taylor concluded, "The ugliest race-tinged comment by any prominent leader during this campaign came not from a Republican but from Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat. . . . Lewis accused McCain and Palin on October 11 of 'sowing the seeds of hatred and division,' likening them to George Wallace, the segregationist Alabama governor who created an 'atmosphere of hate [in which] four little girls were killed.' Lewis should be ashamed of himself."

So, here we are, nearly two years later, and Lewis is walking a two-block gauntlet of white hate from the Capitol to the Cannon House Office Building. A racial epithet spews from a crowd being restrained by Capitol Police.

maria said...

"It reminded me of photographs I saw of the jeering crowds when Central High was being integrated by the Little Rock 9 in 1957," said Lewis, 70, a civil rights veteran and one of the nation's most distinguished advocates for justice and racial quality.

"It also reminded me of the angry demeanor of white people when a group of us were being arrested in February 1960 in Nashville, during a civil rights demonstration. As we were being led to a police van, people lined the streets just like they were at the Capitol, and they were yelling 'The niggers are coming!' and 'Go back to Africa!' "

There he goes again, remembering.

Makes me mad as hell.

So where were the teabaggers during the period from 2000 to 2006when the Repubs had almost total control over the government, increased the national debt, plunged us into an unnecessary war at the cost of $4 billion per month and as another poster pointed out cut taxes while expanding Medicare????

The teabaggers are full of guano.

This is all about RACE and I'm surprised you can't see it.

Did you see those yahoos gathered on the Capitol grounds last weekend.

Their faces were red hot and contorted with pure hate.

They spit on a black congressman and the word nigger was spewed promiscuously.

Meanwhile there were Republican Congressmen on the balcony egging them on.

This is not civil dissent, this is war.

These are the same people who justify killing doctors who perform abortions.

They've already threatened at least 10 congressional supporters of healthcare with violence.

This is no time to be complacent black folks.

These people are serious and we damn sure better be.

Nan said...

Karen, when you talk about the tea party participants being "afraid," and then we see crowds that are mostly white retirees, just what are they afraid of other than a black man in the White House? The tea party represents a shrinking demographic -- ignorant aging white Bible-thumpers who can't deal with the fact the 1950s are never coming back -- and the exceptions within the movement (the occasional person of color [which I've yet to see in any photos of the tea party rallies, although I keep getting told they do exist], for example) only serve as the proverbial exceptions to the rule that prove just how unrepresentative the teabaggers are of the country as a whole.

I'd feel sorry for them if they weren't so obviously willfully, cheerfully wallowing in their ignorance. None of them seem to have a clue as to what terms like "socialism" actually mean and they obviously don't know how a representative democracy works. They parrot talking points tossed at them by the likes of Glen Beck and freak out whan someone points out that whatever bizarre piece of misinformation they're reciting is flatout wrong. And the way they're cheerfully embracing violence as a solution scrares the crap out of me -- sooner or later one of those ignorant geezers is going to decide to do more than toss bricks. Someone's going to get shot or a house or office will get firebombed because those crackers can't deal with reality.

I do know a few tea party types personally. The one thing that has struck me over and over is how many of them rail against the government when they're either former government employees (like retired teachers or postal workers), retired military, or being funded through government money now (e.g., working for a company that does government contract work). They're on Medicare or have health insurance as government retirees, draw a pension from the government, etc. They've spent their entire lives sucking off a government teat, but still insist government is the problem. Dumb doesn't begin to cover their stupidity.

Mahndisa S. Rigmaiden said...

Actually UTS, the tea party movement has been around for many, many years. Just as the civil rights struggle had diversity, so does the tea party movement. The tea partyers of the past decade were usually academics; professors and so forth who were concerned with the infringement of Constitutional rights by big government big business. Some of the activists started off in college campuses.

What you see in the media represents a segment of angry white Americans who listen to Glen Beck and Fox news and think they are bucking trends. They are not the essence nor do they understand the essence of the movement. They are mere drones following orders from the high priests of counter intelligence at Fox news.

The real tea party activists like IRWIN SCHIFF and his son Peter, along with other tax protesters have been consistent with their complaints about the government and our monetary system for a LONG TIME. Irwin is in his eighties and is serving prison time for tax evasion because he rightly claims that the IRS and the FED are not Constitutionally warranted entities and have unprecedented and ILLEGAL power.

So yes Steve, the tea party movement has been around a long while. And to be honest, the real tea partyers couldn't stand GW Bush because he was a lying hypocrite and in the end started the first bailouts!

Don't get me wrong, some of these tea partyers are racists, but don't confuse them with the ones who have reasonable concerns.

The Republican party has been around a long time as well.

In fact at one time most black folks supported them.

However it was Civil Rights legislation which precipitated their transition into the White Supremacist party.

UTS you shouldn't be so judgmental. Bob Barr is a good example of a libertarian who chose to stand up and speak about racism in the libertarian movement. There are quite a few people out there who you might not see on CNN that are interesting, intelligent and diverse who are political independents; they are not members of the GOP or the DEMS. I am one of them. I am a political independent and have been for years. I vote Dem, GOPer, Green and whoever else I think can get the job done.

Yes the GOP has been around for a long time, but the tea party movement is not solely consistent of Republicans and there's even been some GOPer backlash against tea partyers.

You'd be better off directing your ire towards neo nazis and out racists rather than trying to say that tea partyers are all or even mostly racist; that is hardly the truth.

Have you read any of the 1000+ pages in the healthcare reform bill? If so, you'd be surprised at the limitation of coverage and RIGHTS that it imposes on seniors and the disabled. But don't take my word for it. READ pages 1-120 to see what I am talking about and then you might be able to understand some of these people's ire.

In the end, I could really give a damn about the cult of personality surrounding most politicians. Give me the facts.

The FACTS tell me that this reform package, although well intentioned, is terribly misguided. And like I said before insurance companies WROTE the majority of the bill, so what are we really getting?

mellaneous said...

AB you know I feel a lot of what you say and we have a lot of things in common, since neither of us supports the Dems or the Repubs and neither of us are Libertarians, so help me understand what appears to be an obvious anti-immigrant and anti-black streak among the Tea Party folks and other rightist.

Now I will agree that they are right on about a lot of things, esp. the idea that the banks have socialized their losses. They nailed Obama on his lack of effectiveness on dealing with foreclosures, the bailout and his closeness to Wall Street. Contrary to popular belief the majority of Obama's campaign funds came from Wall Street and Wall Street law firms.

Somebody on this blog pointed to a list of legislation that Obama had passed, but the point is that there is no real follow through by his administration, which makes the legislation suspect.

For example I think it was the TARP funds that were supposed to go to banks to help homeowners refinance, who were in possible foreclosure, but that money was put in the banks pockets. I work with a group that works with folks who are trying to renegotiate based on these funds and ALL the banks response has been is to play the mortgage holders off and deny, deny, deny. And these are folks who have money.

So I feel them on this.

And unlike you and Karen many of the TP'ers support the US wars of aggression.

And I don't ever hear them complain about the defense budget.

Nor have I heard them complain about the US double standard in public education.

And from what I heard out of their own mouths many were opposed to Universal Health Care (and this watered down reform)because they didn't want to pay for someone else's health care. Yes and some were opposed to it because the gov't was going to run it. But many don't have any problem with their gov't run Medicare and Medicaid. And they haven't refused to accept their gov't delivered mail.

I disagree that millions of black folks are Tea Partiers. I think they are dissatisfied, but they are not TPers because they see what everyone else sees.
If you are saying they have problems with the gov't I agree, and of course they are tricked by and diverted by the color of the presidents skin.

There is a deep seated sense of racism, sexism and homophobia, isolationism, warmongering and selfishness that seems to mark the Tea Party movement.

I think you and Karen are exceptions. Karen sounds like good people. So my objections are not personal.

The Oath keepers seem to be serious about upholding the constitution no matter where your politics fall. I actually find them to be a bit more open, which is really interesting.

Maybe there is a Third way. Maybe we can find others who are opposed to all the gov't abuses but also opposed to their wars of aggression, their sexism, their homophobia, their racism, and support the rights of workers, immigrants and poor people.

UTS, damn that mad my morning. Look, I agree with MR and AB that the Dems nor the Repubs have done much to coddle corporate America. The Banking bailout sucked (though necessary, or we'd be eating cat food because half the major banks would have collapsed) and this bill gives a lot away to the Insurance industry. Fine, its a libertarian or leftist paradise. But lets keep it real.

The Tea Party are the racist baiting anti-government, Flat earth, John Birch conspiracy yahoos converging onto into a corporate sponsored Klan Rally for one damn reason -- a Black guy is now President.
End Of Discussion.

After watching these crazies threaten congressmen over the summer for even beginning healthcare reform and then have the nerve to spit on members of congress, its clear they're not into civil discourse.

These people are not interested in discourse, change or even logic. A set up of private/public regulations a "government takeover"? Do these idiots even know what the hell they're talking about?

mellaneous said...
There is a deep seated sense of racism, sexism and homophobia, isolationism, warmongering and selfishness that seems to mark the Tea Party movement.

Exactly mell. These crazies don't seem to notice that half their problems started with Reagan and without those damn liberal ideas -- grandma would have died 10 years ago because she didn't have her heart meds and they would have all died in car accidents because auto regulations would be non-existant.

If they were truly angry at the way things were, they'd protest Wall Street banks and defense contracts as well. I was in New York at last year's Wall Street protest and you have fit those cats in a booth compared to the tea party. (Funny note, my moderate Republican sales manager was wondering why did half the protesters showed up naked. Aaah, lefties.) And nobody was marching through the streets of Stanford, Groton or Hartford CT protesting outrageous fee hikes in healthcare or unnecessary military weapons. No marching through Orange County when insurance companies jacked up fees by 38%.

Nope, they're barking 'nigger', 'baby killer' and 'faggot' because Congress making it illegal for 6 years to get kicked off insurance rolls because they were born with a condition.

And mell, to your point about TARP, these goon squads are fighting the Congress on the most basic of modern banking regulations.

The only way to battle these fools is to take the fight to them -- not with guns, but with logical, protest and voting.

The TP'ers and their GOP puppet masters are banking on liberals holding their noses and doing nothing. So gone folks, bitch that Obama is Bush with a Tan and balk at Health Reform. Legitimize these loons who would sooner shoot you than help you out of a car wreck. Think that la-la land types like Ralph Nader or Dennis Kuicinich will leads us to the promise land when they can't organize a decent Senate race. And we'll all see real death panels when President Sarah Palin comes to power in 2014.

AB I hear what you're saying but I write for time to time for Black Agenda Report I don't think Glen Ford supports the Tea Party.

I know we are splitting hairs here but there are some important differences between the black working class and folks like Cornel West, opposition to Obama and the workings of capitalism.

There opposition is more inclusive. And while you are correct to nail the black church structure with rampant homophobia, the Tea Partyers are ardently homopobic as well.

I think we can agree that they need to broaden their outlook. Tavis, West, Dyson et al were also talking about the problem with public schools and you and I know that the Obama admin is pushing the privitization of education. Which ironically if he has his way would put some of his black cheerleaders out of work, while hurting the kids who would be left out of that scheme.

Tavis and them were complaining about the "injustice" system which continues with the mandatory minimum and the unequal crack/powdered cocaine sentencing laws.

The point is to move that crowd toward these injustices as well and have them examine why being anti-immigrant, anti-women or anti-gay is not good if the goal is indeed to create a more just society.

mell:

here is more on the hoax of hobamacare and the fake brawls of repubs and dems:

The Fake Reform

On the whole, the Obama health care legislation is just plain bad. It's fake reform. Most of the people getting medical coverage for the first time under its provisions will get through an expansion of Medicaid. The Medicaid expansion and inclusion of children in their parents' policies till the age of 24 are perhaps the only unambiguously positive aspects of the bill, and both these could have been passed through the House and Senate at any time since the end of 2006.

Supposedly, insurers can't refuse to insure anybody, or jack prices on the basis of pre-existing conditions, and can't revoke policies when people get sick enough to actually use them. But so many loopholes and end runs have been written into the legislation that these and other widely ballyhooed provisions to safeguard the interests of patients are in fact meaningless. The ban on pre-existing conditions for example is negated by allowing insurers to offer “wellness” discounts. The older, the fatter, the less physically fit and the already sick need not apply for these discounts, and the fit will lose them when they gain a few pounds.

Insurance policies will continue to cherry pick their customers in the marketing, and like the credit card industry, insurers will now be able to evade already weak state regulators by selling policies across state lines. This will undoubtedly lead to concentrations of insurance companies in the least regulated states, and a race to the bottom. Health coverage that many working Americans now get will be steeply taxed, and to evade this tax employers will simply offer policies worth less, provoking yet another downward stampede.

Big pharmaceutical companies are assured exclusive rights for even longer periods than before to new classes of drugs, and insurance companies are prohibited from paying for the re-importation of drugs originally manufactured here from Canada, or combining to negotiate drug prices downward.

The ban on selling low-cost health insurance to the nation's twelve or fifteen million undocumented means the border will now extend to every doctor's office and emergency room in the land. And insurance policies offered through “the exchange” are prohibited from covering abortions or a list of reproductive health services.

Private insurance companies will use their all-too-real death panels to continue to decide which procedures they will cover, and which ones they won't, and how much they will pay for them. Health insurance premiums will be capped at just under ten percent of a family's income, but this will not include already high co-payments, or deductibles. In Massachusetts, where a version of the president's plan has been law since 2006, sick people are forgoing treatment because they cannot afford the high co-payments and deductibles, and the flood of bankruptcies from unpayable medical bills is continuing.

The legislation is not a step toward single payer, as it removes none of the legal obstacles facing states which choose that path on their own. It's almost a good thing that most of the bill's provisions don't take effect till 2014.

And of course the too big to fail private health insurers get a stream of compulsory customers, some of them paid for in part with government money.

hobama is a liar and hobamacare is a lie!!!

And if we are honest we have to admit that some of them are backed by the allies of big business.

Again AB from what i read and hear the Health Care Reform Bill has some serious problems. But, again I did not hear folks on the right calling for Universal Health Care.

How do you explain this contradiction? I mean if these folks are interested in justice and equality of opportunity and of course at least affordable health care for all.

I think we should call them all on the carpet (homophobes, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant folks) including the backward church folks. Things change people change even the church has changed. But folks have to present cogent reasons why they should change and people have to see that their ideology doesn't really work for them in the long run.

To reiterate I too agree with many of the planks of the Rightists protest. But they are not clear about their ultimate goal, whereas I and other revolutionary minded (and from what I can tell yourself and others who read this blog) and even some progressives and reformists are clear about their goals. Fannie and Freddie agreed to pay the government a 10 percent dividend each year on funds they draw from their lifeline. So far the companies have paid $6.8 billion to the Treasury Department, even as they continue to take in tens of billions of dollars from Treasury. In essence they are paying Treasury’s dividends with money from Treasury, the companies disclosed in regulatory filings last year.

Aside from the bailout, the Federal Reserve has purchased about $1.2 trillion of Fannie and Freddie mortgage securities and corporate bonds. The Treasury Department also has bought about $220 billion of the companies’ mortgage securities.

In total, Fannie and Freddie have received direct and indirect federal support worth more than $1.5 trillion.

Yet the companies’ financial health has not been improving. At first, the companies were each entitled to a $100 billion government lifeline. The Obama administration later raised the limit to $200 billion.

Then on Christmas Eve, the administration quietly lifted the cap altogether, effectively giving the companies a blank check. It was one of several controversial Fannie and Freddie-related announcements made on the holiday. After Dec. 31, the decisions would have required congressional approval.

Some of the announcements were expected. For example, Fannie said it would need another $15 billion from taxpayers to stay afloat. Freddie hasn’t asked for more money since last May, but indicated that it will in “future periods.”

Amidst these statements was an even more controversial disclosure: The Treasury Department approved about $42 million in combined cash compensation and bonuses for Fannie and Freddie’s top executives.

The payouts drew the ire of some lawmakers.

“We are paying these people bonuses to lose tens of billions of dollars,” Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) said at a House Financial Services Committee hearing in January. “What people do with their money is their business. What they do with the taxpayer money is our business.”

the bankers bankrolled his entire campaign...the swindleus pkgs were green than u notes charged to us!!!

does not every other corp influence even the crumbs thrown to the cbc pale by comparison???"

AB we agree Obama works for the interest of the ruling class, which includes big business the big corps and the big bankers.

WE agree that the Dems and Repubs both represent the interest of the rich and that folks have been put to sleep a bit by the Obama phenomenon.

We are saying some of the same things, but I disagree that the narrowness of many of the tea party folks can be ignored or treated with kids gloves. I think that the right wing folks who are narrow have to be viewed with a bit of suspicion.

I like this little saying:
"a thousand mice can slay a lion...but only if they attack!!"

But AB the mice won't even think about attacking the lion if they are fighting each other for cheese, rather than trying to figure out a way that they all can eat and live peacefully and respectfully with one another.

If we (working people, middle class people white, black, red, yellow, brown, old, young, whatever, male female, shemale, gay or whatever) are going to solve our problems we have to come together and not throw rocks at one another.

And AB we simply can not close our eyes to the fact that rocks have been thrown. Its like you remind folks everyday of the homophobia in the black community. While I know a lot of black folks who are not gay but are not homophobic, I can't ignore your assertion because it has truth in it.

What do I do? I do and will call the son of a guns out. But I won't pretend that many of those suckers sit in the pews and in the pulpit are not homphobic.

AB the mice can't attack the lion if they are busy biting one another and it will be a useless attack if they aren't organized, the Lion will pick them off one at a time or one little pack at a time.

Lets find common ground

The Dramacrats and their echo chambers are going full-tilt hysteria on violence and threats of violence from opponents of the Health Care Takeover. (None of which have been confirmed and some have been definitively refuted.) Even though no one on the right has been proven to have committed or even advocated violence, simpering leftists are insisting we denounce it as though it has. I'm not falling for that trick. Just like the fake "Nigger" story last week - Lewis to his credit admits he never heard it - this is propaganda tactic designed to distract the populace. No one should be surprised that they can’t prove these accusations. They never can. With all these videos surfacing, the large police presence and all the witnesses, I find it hard to believe that no one can identify or find any evidence of their claims. It’s disgraceful and completely unfounded for John Lewis to compare this peaceful protest to his experience on the Pettus Bridge. The situations and conditions are completely different. This whole charade about the so-called "Tea Party" being down for smaller government, keeping our privacy from being violated, fighting against "socialism and tyranny" is all hogwash...particularly since the movement is being co-opted by the very slimy pols (i.e, Palin, et al)that this so-called movement talks about getting rid of...the true facts are that EVERY Republican president since and including Herbert Hoover has increased the federal government’s size, scope, or power–and usually all three.

Over the last one hundred years, of the five presidents who presided over the largest domestic spending increases, four were Republicans. Include regulations and foreign policy, as well as budgets approved by a Republican Congress, and a picture begins to emerge of the Republican Party as a tool of government growth and corporate thievery on their watch.

Now, I'm not saying the Dems are any better but the sheer hypocrisy of those who promote the tea party movement is overwhelming. When I hear pols like Bachmann or Cantor preach about smaller government and "taking back our nation"...I laugh my ass off. Now, I'm not saying that there aren't honest people participating in this movement, who truly feel fed-up and are dedicated to their cause but the fact remains that their "movement" is being directed and controlled by agents and money of the very thing they rail against.

Beck, Palin and the whole list of political boondogglers are nothing more than "the sky is falling" propagandists who are only interested in selling books, getting paid and making sure their re-election coffers are full.

The Tea Party was on-point to take aim at the bailout legislation, but one wonders where the Tea Party leadership (many involved in Republican circles) was when Bush created harmful precedents by pushing for a new Medicare prescription drug benefit and the No Child Left Behind Act...one does wonder, does one?

Now the Tea Party movement is being infested with offshoots of white supremacy and other assorted "anti-Obama" groups that have heap the failures created by their own ignorance and indifference to challenge the status quo that existed long before this man had taken the reigns of the schizophrenic nation.

I'm not big fan of ObamaCare but how is what he's doing any different than what has occurred under previous presidents like Reagan or Bush? It tickles me when I read posters here who tried to intellectually justify their hatred (or whatever you want to call it) for the current CEO of America...ya'll should already know that he ain't going to be any different than those who have slept in the big plantation house on Pennsylvania Ave.

So Obama is much worst than Bush?

Now that's some funny shit.

From: Justin Ruben, MoveOn.org Political Action <moveon-help@list.moveon.org

In the last week, Democrats have faced racial slurs and death threats. But Republican leaders have been mostly silent or dismissed these deeply disturbing events as isolated incidents. Will you sign the letter asking them condemn the bigotry and hatred?

Add your name
Dear MoveOn member,

Last weekend, anti-health care protesters were out in force in Washington—and some of their behavior was deeply disturbing.

A crowd of tea partiers shouted the "n word" at Congressman John Lewis, a former civil rights leader who marched with Dr. King. They yelled homophobic epithets at Rep. Barney Frank, an openly gay congressman. And one protester actually spat on a Black member of Congress.1

Then this week, Democrats who voted for reform began receiving death threats—one had a coffin left on his lawn and another was told snipers would kill the children of lawmakers who voted yes.2 Several Democrats had their district offices vandalized, and a gas line was cut at a home that tea partiers mistakenly believed belonged to Rep. Tom Perriello.3

A few Republicans have spoken out against the racism and violence, but most are still treating them as "isolated incidents."4 They are not isolated. They've been part of Republican-supported tea parties for almost a year and they're a natural consequence of telling people that reform is a totalitarian plot.5

It's an outrage, and no American should tolerate it. So we're joining with our friends at Color of Change to stand up to the hate. Can you add your name to this letter asking Republican leaders to unequivocally condemn bigotry, hate, and violence among their supporters?

http://pol.moveon.org/condemnhate/?id=19573-5641099-20Er9ax&t=3
The letter asks the leaders of the Republican party to do two simple things:

Unequivocally condemn bigotry and hate among your supporters, and make clear that those who embrace it have no place in your party and that you reject their support.
Make clear that you will not tolerate fear-mongering and coded appeals to racism from officials in the Republican Party, at any level.
Instead of calming the tea partiers' anger, Republican members of Congress have stoked it.

NBC reported that on Saturday, Reps. Mike Pence, Tom Price, and Michele Bachmann all addressed the tea partiers and that Bachmann stirred them "into a tizzy."6 Protesters from that rally then fanned out across Capitol Hill and were behind the assaults on Reps. Lewis, Frank, and Cleaver.7

Yesterday, Rep. John Boehner called the violence and threats "unacceptable."8 But just last week, he referred to fellow representative Steve Driehaus as "a dead man" if he voted for health care reform.9 And while Boehner's office insisted his remark wasn't meant to be taken literally, as Rep. Driehaus pointed out, "It doesn't really matter the way you meant it, nor the way I accept it. It's how the least sane person in my district accepts it."10

And there's more: During the debate on the floor of the House on Sunday, Rep. Randy Neugebauer shouted "baby-killer" at Rep. Bart Stupak.11 And after the vote, Sarah Palin told supporters "Don't Retreat—Reload," and then highlighted specific members of Congress she thinks are politically vulnerable using gun cross-hairs.12

I'd walk up to your sorry ass and call you a socialist, and you'd take it like a bitch.

Mell: There's your example of a race card. TSC can't adequately defend the statist power grab on its own merits, so he tries to paint legitimate dissent as racist. He is a little worm who talks tough but inside is a coward. He is just the kind who, if given the chance, would gladly cheer the "elimination" of the people he hates. He is despicable.

maria said...

The Tea Party movement has been marked by racially inflammatory and violent outbursts since its inception a year ago. And while most Republicans are probably disgusted by this behavior, the Republican Party and its leaders have repeatedly tolerated it at events they support.13 But the hateful rhetoric and the tacit acceptance of "isolated incidents" of violence have gotten way out of hand.

play the race card? of course when white folk wan to call people racist its okay but when a black person rightfully points out that shit the white folk quick to talk that race card shit. fuck em. fuck you anonymous cunt.

co sign with you 1000%!
Like they could give a fuck about us?
They hate us with every fucking breath in their bodies.
Most, if not all of them actually believe it's God's will for us to be treated like slaves. They would rather die themselves, than give any type of aid to Black people.
They even show other races, including some of our own it's ok to be racist against us.
Why do you think they get away with the shit they do?
I've never seen anybody get as close as they get to the president, and with guns too!
Nobody gets arrested, Black guy takes the high road, business as usual. I'm really sick of this high road bullshit, we must look like a bunch of gullable pussies to everyone else. We get exploited and used or destroyed at every turn of the hand, and nothing happens. No fight, no justice, nothing. Me personally, If a war you want, bring it.
Me and my wife are licensed and carry. We decided we were going to protect our family at all costs.
This is a different time in amerry-ca. Times are hard, and some people will do anything to get theirs.

Before the flaming trolls hit, know that I don't give a flying fuck how you feel. I ain't gotta sleep with any of you motherfuckers at night.

Because I was trying to appeal to your better sense of awareness on this blog..my mama taught me that you can get more flies with honey than shit, even though they are attracted to both...but since you responded in such a fucked-up way...nevermind.

Yada yada yada AP is biased to the left? What? Where are the objective analysis to which you refer? Puleeze.

As to the other anonymous commenter, when people become rigid ideologues they believe that their way is the ONLY way to live and all others are bad people. It isn't that they disagree with opinions espoused by others but NO they actually think that they are bad people. To participate in this thought distortion gives them much pleasure because they can demonize anyone who isn't under their belief system. In their minds calling people degrading names is just fine so long as they are the 'enemy'. Mental illness is a mutha...

Hey fuck u Alicia...as I said, I was just attempting to appeal to your better sense...if u see an ulterior motive in my comments that's your problem.

It's obvious that you're passionate bout what you believe and that's fine but if this is a place where you feel so disrespected...why come here?

Alicia please...you diss me with your first response...WTF! As I said, I agree with many of the things you've stated and my initial post was sincere, but because of the way you've been responded to here, you project that defensiveness before you even get to dialogue with me as to why I would appeal to you and not the others...I'm not psychic and I doubt you are too!!

Sorry for the fuck u and more power to you sista...take care.

AB --
You obviously believe half the nonsense that FOX puts out about Obama? Did Obama not ask you out on a date back in the 80's or something? Damn, I bet you think he was born in some Kenyan hut and smuggled into Hawaii too. Please, get a grip!!

(Remember what I said about if Fox said Obama was an alien cyborg, AB would believe it. I think we just proved it.)

You know what's funny -- Social Security were fairly crappy when they came out. They got changed over time. Same with Medicare and the GI Bill.

We can always improve on the HCR bill. We'd be up feces' creek if we follow some bloggers' advice and scrap the whole damn thing.

Same thing with Banking reforms. We can scream about how its not independent from the Fed and so on. But small changes are better than nothing. Get what you can and work like Hell to fix it later.

Obama, if anything positive, is the beginning of change and not change itself. He's not going to change anything if the people are too apathetic to make change happen. Its called getting your foot in the door.

He's the President, not Jesus or Satan. Until we all get a grip and see him as just a guy with a really big job and not some sort of secular deity -- Liberals and black folks will be spinning our wheels whining about how he's failed us and many a Tea Party member will loading their pistols waiting for Rahm Emanuel to jump out of a black Helicopter with an Illuminati branding iron.

maria said...

MR and AB -- you both agree about obama. what are you fighting about?

i've worked for AP, UPI and reuters (among others). they're all fine. they don't lean one way or another.

msbnbc is right wing, fox is right wing, washtimes is right wing. washpost has become more right-wing with each passing day.

cnn is moderate, nyt is moderate--opinion pages and certain shows tend to be liberal.

two organizations that check the truth & lies:

correction:
CNBC is right wing.

MSNBC left leaning (or more, with olberman, eg)

Obama is the restorer of conservative fervor and will be the end of the democrat party.

Mahndisa S. Rigmaiden said...

Maria, I am not fighting with anyone. NONE of my comments were directed towards a particular person except one of the anonymous posters. I don't come to this blog to fight but apparently insults about my religion and appearance have been tossed about here nonetheless. It just shows the depths of mental illness among some folks.
