Some parents should be left behind.

"If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month.” ~Theodore Roosevelt~

Tabitha Allen needs a good kick in the pants.

"Tabitha Allen blames herself for her 10-year-old son's violent behavior. Growing up and living in a drug-infested, hooker-inhabited neighborhood, the 33-year-old mother of five is angry about life. "My anger reflects off my children," Allen explained one morning in the North Philadelphia rowhouse she inherited from her grandmother.

Her son - a thin, almost gaunt, boy with long eyelashes - punched a teacher last June at Kenderton Elementary School, a K-8 in Tioga. He knocked the glasses off her face and blackened her eye with a blow that packed unexpected power. As a 10-year-old, he had reached the minimum age to be arrested, and ended up with a simple assault charge in Family Court, where he was put on probation. He was removed from Kenderton and transferred to a classroom for disruptive elementary school students in Logan. Only last week, Allen said that her son was disciplined for having a BB gun at his new school. She said it was a misunderstanding and that the gun belonged to another student. [Source]

Tabitha Allen doesn't need a kick in the butt because she was born into unfortunate circumstances. She needs a kick in the butt for bringing five children into her world. A world where hope is hard to come by.

Tabitha Allen didn't give herself much of a shot, and she brought five kids along for the ride. Read the link to the Philly.com series about school violence that I provided. It will give you a wonderful insight into why Philly has 77 murders [and counting] so far this year.

"Tabitha Allen admits she wasn't on top of her children's lives the way she should have been, especially after her grandmother got sick and an aunt died. "I took my mind off my kids," Allen said. Allen, a high school dropout and unemployed, had all five of her children before she was 25. Two of her teenagers she describes as "Bonnie and Clyde." "They don't know how to walk away from stuff. They don't know how to let stuff go," she said. Her youngest, the 10-year-old who assaulted the teacher, takes after them, she said. So it was no surprise to her when she learned he had hit his teacher.

Earlier, the teacher had intervened when the boy hit a classmate. That led to a fist fight in the hall between the boy and the teacher, she said. Her son had been suspended repeatedly for fighting, she said. This time, he faced legal charges and landed on probation. Kenderton kicked him out and sent him to a disciplinary classroom at a K-6 school in Logan, about a mile and a half from his house. The classroom is run by Abraxas.

This year, there are 10 such sites based at elementary schools and serving 240 children in grades three to eight, said Wright, of the discipline office. Each self-contained classroom is staffed by a teacher and a behavior specialist. Students are evaluated after 30 days to determine if they can return to a regular school. In addition to academics, the students receive counseling and character-building courses. Allen said the school is too strict. When her son enters the school, he is patted down for weapons, she said. His classroom is in the basement, she said, and he is not allowed out for recess. "He ain't no convict. This isn't jail," she complained. Allen also said she was at a loss about how to help her son, who has ADHD and sees a psychiatrist.

She did her best to discipline her children, she said, and learned how to "beat them at their own game." When her son missed her imposed 10 p.m. curfew, she made him sit outside until 2 a.m. - in the cold. When her 13-year-old was locked up for trying to steal sneakers, she let him sit in jail for a while. She did the same to her 16-year-old daughter after she got into a fight and was detained. And when her 15-year-old son said he was going to kill himself, she hung a rope and told him how best to do it. "I said, 'It depends on how you jump,' " she said. "You got to jump right."

Allen struggles with her own anger. She said it comes from "life. Period. Me growing up in a neighborhood like this, seeing all the drugs." She pointed to her front door. "I got a whole hooker row right here on the corner," she said."

Tabitha Allen gives her ten year old son a 10 p.m. curfew! And people wonder why criminal lawyers do so well. *shaking head*

Apparently the fact that I choose to homeschool, and all our children are happy, well adjusted and successful somehow threatens you.

For someone who wants to discount it, you seem awfully keen to judge.

For the record, the JD is from Georgetown Law, summa cum laude. Last time I checked, it was a pretty good school.

And yes, real textbooks. The logic course we hope to offer next year will have in part a textbook used at Harvard in their classics dept. Does
"Harvard classics dept" count as a real school to you?

You should check out Amazon sometime, really. You can buy any textbook offered at any top tier school, in any subject, and they express mail it right to your doorstep.

FWIW, as a science major, most of the textbooks used in public schools are sub-par and don't teach students how to think critically or analytically, both of which are necessary skills for the hard sciences if one is to be successful.

And we live in what has been called a "top school district" in the country by a number of progressive rags, and yet, we still choose other options.
Some of us want our kids to actually be educated, not indoctrinated.

@Mold
I never asked anyone to excuse the behavior of the abusive priests. My point was, it seems to be one of the few cases of pervasive and wide-spread child molestation that got some attention paid to it.

And no, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that a disproportionately high percentage of the prison population had been molested as children.

Something soul destroying about that, when you have no control and no voice, that leads to very self-destructive behavior later on.

Exceedingly sad.

Pay no attention to mold, Karen.

Much as he/she/it would like to "pretenderate" & "imaginenate", poor mold couldn't manage to scrape together enough gray matter to cover the pointy end of a turd.

Frankly, I'm impressed you can even decipher mold's ramblings, as incoherent as they are.

@ Anony:

If you are in CA, I know a lot of school districts will fund www.k12.com (I think I have the url correct), and online school (middle and high school). Sacramento I know does, as does San Diego and Orange County in SoCal.

They offer honors courses and Latin is one of the language choices. Even the basic Latin for middle school helps them tremendously with SAT and ACT prep.

Another good math program for kids that struggle with math (my older son who is Beijing right now is very bright with languages, etc but struggled hideously with math) is
www.icanlearn.com

The I Can Learn math program is one that has been cited by the Educational Clearinghouse as a "what works" program.

I Can Learn moves slowly, and if the child doesn't get the lesson the first time, they can replay it and do more supplemental problem sets until the "aha" moment sets in. For kids that struggle, in a traditional classroom, the teacher MUST move on, and they get left behind. The down side is, the I Can Learn series only goes to Algebra II I believe. It's also pretty reasonable -- you can pay by the year, or $30/mth as an ongoing subscription, and the textbooks and workbooks are low cost as well.

Re: k.12 online, I've never used them personally, but many military families who we know do, and seem to be pretty happy with it. You can also supplement the course material with additional stuff at home, of course. The best thing to watch is when their eyes light up about a subject, and they're off to the races to find out as much about it as they can.

No, I must disagree.
A great number of people, including some who have legal training (Which I clearly do not) have written extensively that they believe the term "Natural Born Citizen" ONLY applies to those children born on US soil to TWO US citizen parents. They quote a variety of pre-Constitution legal precedents, theories, writings, etc.

That is actually the position I personally adhere to after my layman's reading/understanding of the letters written back and forth about it before the Constitution was finalized.

It has nothing to do with Obama, the person, per se, since I believe my own US citizen daughter is not eligible, either, should she sometime down the road want to dabble in politics.

Even Obama's own campaign website confirmed he considered himself to be born a British subject in addition to being a US citizen. The concept of "dual allegiances" at the time of the framing of the Constitution was one of the issues that gave rise to the concept of "Natural Born" vs "Native Born".

It's a technicality that has personal resonance for me, and I would be very curious as to the ruling of SCOTUS parsing this issue. The "birther" issue, IMO, offers an opportunity to clarify an ongoing debate once and for all.

Too many children today never even know or exude either as they were snuffed out by vdlr’s generation

I will never forgive them for it ever…eternally!!!
Educating young children is one of the greatest joys of my life. I have earned national teaching awards because I love my students and inspire them to excel. I have spent many years of my life educating children and adults. My academic specialty has been early childhood education. My preference has been first grade.
I was born into a family of legendary black educators. I was taught to revere education and intellect more than anything else. My passion for learning was meticulously nurtured by intellectual parents who loved me and wanted me to live an excellent life. All children become what they are exposed to. Successful black intellectuals defined my childhood. So, I always loved and excelled in school.
For years, I strove to inspire my students with the intellectual contagion of my passion for learning. This is increasingly difficult when my students come to me with no skills, except dancing and rapping. I have seen students who can name every superstar rapper, yet cannot spell their own first names or identify primary colors.
At 44, I am less patient with toxic parents and the toxic students they breed. I have resigned from a profession that I adore. And, I am currently mending a broken heart...

Most of us have a deadbeat dad or mom in our own family who has been allowed to be comfortable in the bliss of pretending that their child isn't real and doesn't have to eat every day. Some of us are dating people who've chosen to ignore their own children and for some reason, you share your body with this person with the expectation that they would take care of your own seed. All the while, there is some child out there struggling day-by-day without the ability to pay for school supplies, a winter coat or new shoes, and is forced to beg someone else's parent to do the things that their own parent has decided not to do.

This is a serious problem that all of us can play a role in helping to solve. When we see that person who's not doing what they are supposed to do, there's nothing wrong with speaking up about it and letting the person know that their behavior is unacceptable. If your son has turned himself into a baby-making machine, impress upon him the absolute importance of a man doing what is right by his children. In my own life, I told one of my "adopted kids" the other day that I was going to help her hunt down the man who impregnated her to ensure that her boys don't end up becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of black men who end up in the cycle of prison, poverty, miseducation and death. We must engage in the immediate, impactful and determined intervention into the lives of our kids and those around us if we want to make our community better. If you were a child who'd been abandoned, you'd want someone speaking up for you too.

When you raise your sons and daughters teach them to remember that when they share their bodies with another person, they must ensure that this person would be a good parent if a child were to come from the relationship. Sure, kids don't always listen to us, but we can at least try our best when telling them how to choose appropriate mates. If you let a smooth-talking bum have sex with you and then he doesn't take care of your children, you are not only destroying your own child's future, you're also making a mistake you should have known to avoid.

I believe enrollment is now commencing for Fall 2011.

You can also sign up for a "per course" basis if you don't want to do it fulltime, but want some supplemental work or enrichment or an offering not available at your home school.

They also have summer classes, but the Honors classes are not offered in the summer. The language classes are, though, in an accelerated fashion, and at a deep discount.

Hope this helps.

Got you. I do like a lot of stuff the Federalist Society publishes.

I think the "disagreement" is that you stated you think she could run for POTUS, I think under the stricter definition I was provided, the answer is no.

FWIW, we have a dear friend who works at the WH in a non-political billet. He interacts directly with POTUS on a personal level in a "not infrequent" basis. He keeps reassuring me, political differences aside, I would love POTUS as an individual and if I had the opportunity to get to know him on a personal level, would be friends with him (as if our worlds will ever cross .. but he was just pointing out that I have many good friends I adore whom I disagree with politically).

Apparently, according to my friend, (who is a doll), POTUS is a warm, genuine person you would love to chat with over a coffee, and definitely not "the Antichrist" ;) as some of the Evangelicals fear.

The Black poet-author-activist Amiri Baraka has turned his pen on Barack Obama, a man he defended like a pit bull as recently as…it seems like yesterday. “Baraka kept up the abusive barrage against anti-Obama ‘rascals’ of the left, right up to the president’s assault on Libya.” But, a change of heart is not sufficient. Baraka and a bunch of other ex-Obamites need to practice some serious and public self-criticism.

Amiri Baraka kept up the abusive barrage against anti-Obama “rascals” of the left, right up to the president’s assault on Libya. Then, all of a sudden, Obama was “the negro yapping” to make imperial aggression “seem right” – “a negro selling his own folk, delivering us to slavery.”

Some of us who have been wise to corporate, center-right Obama for going on eight years consider Baraka’s recent epiphany to have come far too late for redemption. Others say, better late than never. But surely, his new position is incomplete without an explanation and recantation of his politics of the last three years.

Some of us are anti-preemptive war, no matter who is manning the desk in the Oval.

War is a terribly destructive thing, that should ONLY be employed as a last resort, and strictly as a defensive measure. Everyone, including countries, has the right to defend themselves. But no where does that right extend to being the thuggish bullies on the block.

Shameful.

Speaking of "scope of influence", I must run and solve a "crisis" - to wit, a laundry basket full of mismatched socks that somehow lost their "friends" in the roller coast ride of the washer/dryer. As much as I try to convince them that wearing mismatched socks is now "trendy" and "au courant", no sale.

Some days I can't believe this is my life. Welcome to the exurbs.

"As far as "making the teachers pay", I do not support the teachers union or the public school system. We successfully lobbied to have our real estate taxes reduced, and the amt of funding to the local school board slashed as well, since NONE of that money ever seems to make it into the classroom, but is used to support an ever-swelling, ever-growing bureaucracy and Administration."

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and agree with cutting back the administrative costs, as it seems many of our esteemed administrators are too busy rolling those funds into their own salaries and bonuses instead of devoting those funds towards education programs and facilities upkeep. But choking the life out of public schools by cutting back on property taxes isn't going to solve much of anything.

When Didn't You Know It, Poet?

But, then there was Skippy-Gate,

Harvard Professor arrested in his

Figurin’ as slick as Slim is, he jus’ might

Invite families of Sean Bell and Oscar

Newt Gingrich Sings Gershwin, A cappella.

But, Poet, how’d you slip on Iceberg Slim?

How’d you start snarling, growling, guarding

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue like a junkyard dog,

Muzzling the “movement” and protecting the

Bagman transferring trillions to Wall Street,

War Profiteer, Pharma, Agribiz, Oil-igarch,

Insurance mobs, uh, Reagan redux on ‘roids?

Was it his cool “middle”-class mantra?

Or, ‘cause Slim didn’t come Superfly—

Gold-plated cane, fur coat, big hat, talkin’

Poet, when didn’t you know it?

Iceberg made his bones first day on the job,

Whackin’ a couple Somalis—called them pirates.

Poet, when didn’t you know it?

Whatever happens to Moammar Gaddafi, an independent Libya is not on the U.S. agenda. “Obama hopes to ‘stabilize’ Libya under indirect U.S. dominion through a kind of protectorate involving various ‘international’ entities, on the Haitian model.” The president’s doctrine of “humanitarian” warfare – like his rhetoric – is merely a sweetened derivative of George Bush’s more crudely presented policies. “In the final analysis, Euro-American hegemony means crushing the aspirations of all Arabs in the sand.”
As the U.S. discovered in 2003, “Shock and Awe” repels as much as it impresses. Like the Bush Middle East/Western Asia offensive that initially targeted over 30 governments for overthrow (including Libya) but got bogged down in Iraq, Obama and the French and British are in danger of having “reached too far.” Imperialism’s refreshed Obama-face is looking more than ever like a grotesque Halloween mask, and he knows it.
There was no humanitarian crisis, and it will become increasingly impossible to frame the Euro-American assault in North Africa as anything other than an imperial offensive, designed to keep the Arab world in its place and to usurp African sovereignty over the continent’s resources.
Obama’s “face” is melting.

more on the blackish and rabidly elitist hobama's turbo whitening of America

shame!!!!!!!

People who are priced out of the cities by gentrification cannot be considered voluntary migrants. Gentrification has become an overarching fact of Black urban existence, making life less tenable every day. – especially in New York. It is no wonder that 17 percent of Blacks that relocated to the South in the past decade were New Yorkers, far more than from any other state. When gentrification places the monthly rent hopelessly out of reach, there is no choice but to leave – and why not South, where it’s cheaper, and there are so many people who look like you, some of whom are related.

Black movement from inner cities to the suburbs is also intertwined with gentrification. It is not only the poor who are pushed out, but also better off families and singles for whom city life is no longer viable. But all suburbs are not alike. Study after study shows that Blacks more often wind up just outside the borders of the central city in older suburbs, many of which have the characteristics of inner city ghettos, without the conveniences and urban amenities. Such suburbs hug the edges of Washington, Chicago, and Detroit. Other suburbs may appear to be racially “integrated” today – but that is only a snapshot in time. These places will be much Blacker or browner tomorrow because of white flight – the root source of segregation in America.

i don't agree with any of the statements here. let's just leave the rest alone.

gee maria u dont agree with facts even when theyre in ur face u simply lack the ability to analyze on a deeper level but why dont u look at article 1 section 8 of the constitution? dont u think bombing another country counts as an act of war? and if not what does? the bottom line is that president obama violated the constitution and is a hypocrite u dont agree because ure too invested in ur world view therefore ignorant open up ur mind and read the constitution it doesnt get clearer than that

Warmongering war party hostess horny wigless nig vdlr:

Hobama is no powerless saint
And the usa is no saintly superpower!!!
Wtfu!!!!!

Today, the Obama Administration is responsible for its own war crimes, torture, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the peace and defends in U.S. Courts those from the Bush Administration who bear responsibility for having approved or justified them in the past. Yet, this Administration will not even agree to investigate the violation of Mumia Abu Jamal's civil rights in his first trial rife with racial innuendo, judicial misconduct, and a lack of evidence. Or in the case of Troy Davis where seven of nine witnesses recanted their testimonies and cited prosecutorial misconduct. But it did go to court to defend military commissions and insulted Native Americans in the process!
In addition, what the United States is responsible for in Afghanistan and Pakistan just since President Obama came to office is unthinkable and is despicable. And U.S. taxpayers continue to foot the financial and moral bill for the continued subjugation of Palestine, especially the people of Gaza who are still being bombarded by Israeli warplanes, all made possible by every one of us that pays taxes. And let us not forget this Administration's efforts to quash the Goldstone Report (the United Nations Report on Israel's Operation Cast Lead against Gaza) and criticism of Israel after nine Turkish citizens attempting to take humanitarian supplies to Gaza were brazenly murdered by Israeli forces attacking the humanitarian aid ship, Mavi Marmara.

Now, as for democracy, a country that has never practiced it is a poor trumpet for it. From genocide of indigenous Americans to enslavement of stolen Africans to disfranchisement of women, ours has been a less than perfect union. Now, it has turned the administration of its elections over to private voting machine companies and the finance of those elections to individuals and organizations that can mobilize vast sums of money; thus the United States is not in the best best position to dictate the terms of another country's democracy. But, Libyans govern themselves by The Green Book, a form of direct democracy based on the African Constitution concept that the people are the first and final source of all power. Clearly, the U.S. move is counter-Revolution.

I don't recall you disputing FP's assertion that irresponsible violent brutes are the black male norm.

Field, I usually love your posts -- been lurking here for years, but you are way off base on this one. (And your special class of comment trolls seems to be in keeping with that).

Several points:

1) What access to birth control did the Tabitha have (was it consistent, was it somewhere that she could get to on the bus, or by walking, was it covered by Medicaid or otherwise free)?

2)Where did she learn parenting skills? Are parenting classes a standard part of the school curriculum? Is there free access somewhere?

3) What baggage did Tabitha bring to her family? Was she abused herself (and was affordable therapy available for her)? Did she finish school (and was the schooling she was offered even close to adequate? Did she have adequate support (were the aunt and grandmother her primary support system? What does she do now that they're dead?)

3) Where is (are) the father(s)? Did they leave? Are they dead? In prison? Married? Is anyone paying child support?

4) Let's look at what the mother is doing right. She has her child in psychiatric services, she's maintaining a home, she's (apparently) living a law abiding life in an area that is not law abiding, and she hasn't given up, no matter how "angry and hopeless" her life is.

What Tabitha needs isn't condemnation, but better systems in place to ensure that 1) ideally she is never in the situation she is in and 2) that there are ways to maintain a family and 3) get out.

Tabitha, like the rest of us, is doing the best she can with the tools she has. With better tools, she'd be a better parent, and her kids would have a better shot at not being the next statistics in "Killadelphia". What are we doing to make that happen?

As an African American teacher in an urban inner city, your blog is "right on!" Everything you said is true, true, true! I see this everyday. The sad part of it all is that she could bring another 5 kids into the world and still never realize that she and others like her are the problem. The only people that have failed these children are the ignorant parents that brought them into the world. We're seeing the anger and violence in these kids as early as pre-school. Their mother's and fathers are their biggest abusers. Unfortunately, this mentality in the African American community is here to stay. I don't see it changing at all! Not to mention the fact that so many of the children of these parents are born hyperactive, and angry because of their parents (mother and father) heavy use of crack and cocaine when these children were conceived and throughout their pregnancies.
