Is there really a "Deep State V. Trump"?

MORE DISCLAIMERS I don't co-sign with everything that the author Paul Street said in the following article written for counterpunch, but I think that it is a must read for every serious thinker in America.

"In the 2016 presidential election cycle, two “populist” candidates running outside and against the nation’s reigning financial power centers launched remarkable insurgencies within the nation’s two dominant state-capitalist political organizations.   One of those contenders, Bernie Sanders, pushed Wall Street’s number one presidential aspirant, Hillary Clinton, much closer to possible defeat than probably he himself expected. After welcoming Sanders in as a token opponent to help Mrs. Clinton’s nomination as the Democrats’ presidential candidate seem at least partly contested, the Clinton campaign and its allies in the Democratic National Committee (DNC) had to resort to dirty tricks to make sure he didn’t steal their prize.

Sanders’ message of reducing economic inequality resonated with millions of voters.  In retrospect, this is less than surprising in a time when the top tenth of the upper U.S. One Percent owns as much as much wealth as the bottom U.S. 90 percent while half the nation’s population is either poor or near-poor (living at less than half the federal government’s notoriously inadequate poverty level).  A shocking 94 percent of the jobs created in the U.S. economy during the Obama years were part-time, contract, and/or temporary positions.

Sanders’ appeal proved potent enough to force Hillary to change her position on numerous issues, including her prior support for the arch-corporate-globalist Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In the end, however, the Bernie revolution came up short. He lacked an established organizational base to match up with the formidable Clinton machine and its allies in the Democratic Party. He did not possess the killer instinct required to deal that machine a fatal blow (as seen in his excessive willingness to provide Mrs. Clinton cover on her email scandal).  He made critical errors with critical Black voters. And he faced persistent media bias thanks in part to his self-identification as a “democratic socialist.”

The Frankenstein “Populist” Who Won

The other “populist” major party candidate was Donald Trump.  He was richly endowed at least when it came to killer instinct regarding his opponents – or, as he likes to call them, his “enemies.” With no small help from a corporate media that gave him absurd amounts of free public exposure (helping thereby to create a Frankenstein from which that media would later recoil), Trump defeated and indeed humiliated Wall Street’s chosen Republican contenders, including first and foremost Jeb Bush.

He did this by running outside the traditional Republican Wall Street formula that Bush followed and in ways that sparked consternation in Wall Street executive suites and in other “elite” outposts of concentrated wealth and power. He denounced globalist “free trade,” NAFTA, and the TPP. He claimed to speak for working class “forgotten Americans” abandoned by big globalist corporations. He said that “free trade” had cost untold masses of  working Americans their livelihoods. He said that the American political system was “broken” by big money special interests that undermine and distort democracy (something Trump said he knew all about because of his own history as a wealthy funder of politicians). Much of the country’s infrastructure was crumbling under the reign of those interests, he noted.

Along the way, Trump’s frothing promise to deport millions of illegal immigrants and build an anti-immigrant wall on the southern U.S. border troubled business interests who rely on cheap and compliant immigrant labor.  It also threatened Republican efforts to win over more Latino voters
Trump also articulated a protectionist “America First” foreign policy and trade vision that won him enemies in U.S. imperial establishment, which is intimately tied in to the nation’s globalist financial and corporate oligarchy. Adding the bipartisan imperial “national security elite” to those he irked, Trump criticized George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton for advancing costly, jihad-spreading regime-change fiascos in Iraq and Libya. He hinted that he’d drop U.S. support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and criticized Hillary and the foreign policy elite’s provocation of Moscow.

A Loose Cannon Bad for the National Brand

Beneath all this, Trump was something else the ruling class really doesn’t like – a loose cannon full of individualist chutzpah and bile. As Mike Lofgren noted in his important book The Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of a Shadow Government (2016) last summer, “His painfully visible erratic unpredictability and thirst for confrontation made him anything but the sort of team player who would give due consideration to the needs of the vested interests. Dividend drawers want a reliable caretaker to run their affairs, not an insult comedian juggling sticks of dynamite.”

And Trump threatened to ruin Brand America. It is longstanding bipartisan U.S. ruling class doctrine that the United States is the world’s great beacon and agent of democracy, human rights, justice, and freedom. American Reality has never matched the doctrine, of course, but it was especially difficult indeed to square those claims with a candidate like Trump, who openly exhibited racist, nativist, sexist, arch-authoritarian and even neo-fascist sentiments and values while openly praising torture.  “If our system of government is an oligarchy with a façade of democratic and constitutional process,” Lofgren wrote in the preface to his book’s paperback edition, “Trump would not only rip that façade away for the entire world to behold; he would take our system’s ugliest features and intensify them.”

The “dividend drawers” and the overlapping imperial elite prefer people like Obama. Beneath his carefully crafted people’s and “fresh” outsider imagery, he was in fact a well-vetted, Harvard Law-minted and establishment-vetted team player who understood very well that his job was to smoothly serve his Wall Street and Pentagon masters and keep populist and anti-war sentiments at bay while pretending to embrace them both for his own electoral advantage and for broader system-rebranding effect. The neoliberal, silver-tongued Obama was the empire’s sophisticated, fake-progressive, fake-constitutional, and multicultural new clothes.  He enjoyed and embraced the deceptive role.  He told the nation’s financial elite early on in his presidency that, as he remarked to the nation’s top 13 financial executives after he called them to the White House in the wake of the financial collapse they caused, “you guys have a public relations problem and I’m here to help.”

Trump, by contrast, threatened to remove the democratic, legal, post-racial, peaceful, and ethnically diverse, cloak in particularly glaring ways.  He harkened a crisis of legitimacy for the system’s false claims to represent noble and egalitarian ideals – something that promised to be bad for business at home and abroad.  A Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio presidency might have inflicted some of the same damage, to some degree, but not to anything like the same extent as Trump.  The Republican Party has trucked in racist, sexist, nativist, and militarist white nationalism and authoritarianism for more than half a century.  (The Bush family was no exception, to say the least).  Still, no serious Republican presidential contender in memory had gone as far as Trump in making these terrible tendencies so explicit and pronounced, with the effect enhanced by Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and 24/7 cable news.  Trump threatened to rip the last remaining shreds of civilizational legitimacy from the ever more apocalyptic and radically reactionary GOP." Donald Trump represents everything you said you were for - anti-war, anti-Wall Street, economic populism, and pro-investment in black communities - except for his anti-immigration stance.

Wanting to slow down illegal immigration is no more racist than wanting to change America demographics by importing millions of your own co-ethnics.

And re-examining the wisdom of Islamic immigration is not racist. Islam is not a race, it is an ideology, an ideology that is completely incompatible with the Western culture values you embrace.

Both parties refused to serve the interests of the people, instead catering to the interests of their elite donors.

That's why Trump is President, and that's why his election is the best thing to happen to America in a long, long time.

No, he SAYS he is against war and Wall Street and for the little guy, etc.

Inconveniently, he is full of shit. His actions do not match his dishonest rhetoric. Pointing to a handful of his campaign lies will not undo the hideous elitists he has appointed to his cabinet or the plutocratic policies he is passing or plans to pass.

Your being a chump and believing in this fraud does not compel everyone else to do so.

Field, you might want to be careful about spending too much time over at Counterpunch. They're, how shall I say, a little too tinfoil-hatty for my tastes.

I'm not saying they're exactly a left-wing equivalent to the wingnut propaganda outlets like Breitbart, which do nothing but spew lies, 24/7. But Counterpunch isn't totally credible, either. They publish some highly dubious conspiratorial stuff. (They also have a history of allowing fairly valid criticism of the government of Israel to shade into some nasty anti-semitism.)

As for this piece, my gripe with it is that it seems to be making the far-left Susan Sarandon argument: Maybe Trump will be such an awful, terrible fascist that he will ruin the country and bring the whole political and economic system crashing down and pave the way for Communist Utopia!

This is the Marxist doctrine of accelerationism, and it is nonsense.

Wild-eyed lefties are always going on about "heightening the contradictions" and "maybe it has to get worse before it gets better." Um, good luck with that.

All that will result from Trump enacting his agenda without impediment is that the rich will get much richer; the poor will get poorer; and lots of ethnic and religious minorities will get killed, jailed, or expelled from the country.

Good analysis 15, also not sure the media is too upset by his election. There's a reason he got all that free press, not to be conspiracy theoryish or anything but look at the increased numbers for the "failing" New York Times.

I think there are two things that happened with the press.

The first is what you've mentioned. Trump is a "character." His outlandish, boorish, despicable behavior sells newspapers and brings eyeballs to sets. He has milked this free publicity as a cartoon villain long before his presidential run began. Pretty much his whole career, in fact. The media exec who encouraged this are amoral money-grubbers who don't care about anything but the bottom line, so I'm sure they're not dismayed about Trump getting elected. Politics is just a spectator sport to them.

The other factor is the "false balance effect." This is when an MSM reporter bends over so far to prove that they are "balanced" and "objective" -- and to avoid upsetting rabid, angry wingnuts who hate facts that don't serve their agenda -- that they've lost sight of how to properly do their jobs. I'm sure some of them are quite unhappy about the vile and incompetent Trump's election, but probably won't acknowledge the major role they played in it: "You mean to tell me that giving an equal amount of coverage to the dumb, fake narrative about Hillary Clinton's email "crimes" as to all of Donald Trump's many, many real misdeeds WASN'T a good idea????"

Anonymous said...

You people are completely disconnected from reality. Yes, the media gave Trump a tremendous amount of publicity, because they were completely commmitted to destroying his candidacy.

The reason it didn't work was because the things that outraged them were not the things that outraged the public, and because the media has lost all credibility. The more they lied about Trump and covered for Hillary, the more people became convinced that Trump was the right choice.

I think one of the consequences of the Trump election is a hunger for real journalism thus the increase in readership of the NYT. If you ever talk to a conservative who relies solely on conservative media it's an eye opening experience. They have no clue about many large mainstream stories. We truly live in separate worlds.

There has been some of that. Support for legit journalism has increased with Trump's election.

But journalism is facing a very serious funding threat, nonetheless. It has been for years now. The Internet gutted the funding model that news media, particularly newspapers but also TV news, depend on. Much of the ad revenues that used to go exclusively to them now are funneled to all sorts of social media and entertainment and consumer websites.

The public are resistant to paying for news. They are used to, for example, newspapers historically being "free" except for the cost of delivery. Since now you can view them online and no printing and delivery is required, it somehow feels like they should now be totally free. Except somebody has to pay the reporters to report, so ...

Nobody has yet solved this serious problem. As Trump's election has conclusively proven, the public is (politically) dumb and getting dumber. It's a threat to democracy if people aren't informed on the facts.

Trump learned how to play the media for his benefit from his mentor Roy Cohn, a despicable creep so completely awful as to be an utterly perfect teacher for someone as hollow and evil as Trump. Even so, Cohn is said to have disliked Trump to the point of saying about him "That guy pisses ice water."

The above article makes some good points, but exaggerates some criticisms of the previous administration with weird assumptions about what exactly the US government is for, and completely ignores the results they achieved, the obstruction they faced, or the situation they inherited from Cheney and friends. I would like to hear what the author thinks Trump would have done about the financial crash, had he been faced with it. (Hint: He's all for repealing the weak-tea regulations that did get passed to avoid such crashes in the future.) He's said he favors reinstating Glass-Steagall, but as is typical with him, has no credible chance of actually getting that to happen for reasons he is too lazy, ignorant, and incompetent to understand.

As for the media's utter dereliction of its duty where Trump is concerned, ever since the news was tasked with making its share of the profits for the media outlets presenting it, piling onto the massive corporate consolidation of those outlets and St. Ronnie's brilliant idea of taking the fairness doctrine out behind the barn and shooting it in its head, this lack of effectiveness is sort of the inevitable result, and a lot can be learned about the political landscape by noting who considers it a feature and who thinks it's a bug.

There was an interesting article in Vox about the forces in the country that have made the news media what it is, and why it so far hasn't been equipped to deal with Trump or the current behavior of the Republicans that is worth checking out also:

Hey Trumpening,

What are you talking about, pro-investment in black communities? Does that include opening up investment opportunities in privately run prisons across the old confederacy and Texas? I mean a prison with 70% black population might be considered a black community, right?

I hear he is also quite keen on investing in ethnic Mexican and Central American communities. They are known as privately operated ICE detention centers. Don't call them concentration camps. There is also a satellite industry with great investment and employment opportunities based on duping these detainees into purchasing their "freedom." What they don't know can hurt them. They will be required to wear and pay $400/month rent on their own GPS tracking ankle bracelets. They will still owe 50% or more of their bail no matter how much time passes. Nice plan, huh? Makes those payday loan places look like real amateurs, wouldn't you say?

As far as this Deep State thing, if you believe that pile of cowpies, you are indeed in "Deep Shit."

I like president Obama. I don't care if he is a conservative. He's the type of conservative that we need to hear from a little more often. The silver tongues belong to the smooth-talking republican devils selling their wares. I think it makes a certain amount of sense to take care of and preserve Wall Street. Capitalism laid the golden egg. We're not trying to kill it, only control it with the power of the vote and the power of our elected representatives. Power to the People, Right On!

Brigade Fifteen said...

"I like president Obama. I don't care if he is a conservative. He's the type of conservative that we need to hear from a little more often."

Obama is not a conservative, unless you are looking at things from the far-left viewpoint of people such as the writers at Counterpunch, in which literally everyone is a conservative.

And a lot of this, by the way, is really not even about ideology, but just about tactics. It's about pie-in-the-sky dreamers versus people who accept that compromise is sometimes necessary.

What annoys me about those type of people is that they are always engaging in historical revisionism about the options Democratic politicians had available to them at the time. Their criticisms all fall into the category of: Why didn't Politician X do [thing they couldn't have done, because nobody would have ever voted for them in the first place].

James Bold said...

"A shocking 94 percent of the jobs created in the U.S. economy during the Obama years were part-time, contract, and/or temporary positions."

So Zero actually was a really shitty president by your own admission!

If you had a clue, you'd know that the biggest culprit there was Obamacare.  Obamacare's cross-subsidies to hood rats and illegal immigrants made it prohibitively expensive for businesses to hire lower-paid workers full-time and have to pay the insurance costs themselves.  The solution was to cut back to less than 30 hrs/week and throw the problem on the employees... who have fewer hours of work to buy insurance that covers less and less.

This was foretold, yet you act all surprised about it.  Morons.

"The neoliberal, silver-tongued Obama was the empire’s sophisticated, fake-progressive, fake-constitutional, and multicultural new clothes."

Oh, NOW you admit it... since even you can no longer deny that everything he did is turning to shit before your eyes.

"Trump, by contrast, threatened to remove the democratic, legal, post-racial, peaceful, and ethnically diverse, cloak in particularly glaring ways."

A cloak, you say?  So it was never actually true?

"He harkened a crisis of legitimacy for the system’s false claims"

Ah, yes.  Truth is usually better anyway.

"to represent noble and egalitarian ideals – something that promised to be bad for business at home and abroad."

The ideals of the USA were never, ever egalitarian beyond explicit prohibition on titles of nobility.  Everyone was to be equal before the law... as they could never be equal in any other way.  The purpose was "to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity".

Forcing the social and economic "equality" of Africans and Whites has been grossly damaging to justice, domestic tranquility, the general welfare, and has almost destroyed liberty in the USA.

You have to go back.

"Donald Trump represents everything you said you were for ...except for his anti-immigration stance."

Feeled knows he's no better for Americans than his fellow Jamaican national, Colin Ferguson.  Colin Ferguson murdered six people on the Long Island Railroad.  Feeled corrodes American society in quieter but more damaging ways.

"I think one of the consequences of the Trump election is a hunger for real journalism thus the increase in readership of the NYT."

The NYT published Walter Duranty's glowing reports about the success of Soviet Russia, while millions were starving to death in the Holodomor.  It has been a sick anti-American propaganda rag for a century and more, not just since it became Carlos Slim's blog.

And those who deny that there is a Deep State and it's out to sink Trump... precisely who captured Flynn's conversations with the Russian ambassador, retained massive amounts which had no relation to national security, and leaked them to damage the incoming administration?

That's the Deep State, you idiots.

Reading this latest hysterical screed from Little Jimmy, there can be little doubt that he is in urgent need of psychiatric treatment. His shallow grip on reality is becoming ever looser, as he descends further into mental chaos and paranoid delusions.

And yet, he is supportive of Trump's efforts to defund the health insurance for treatment of mental illness. Another example of how the far-Right has convinced its own constituency to vote against its own class interests.

The NYT is quality journalism, but it is not "real". They have very talented writers and reporters and provide a wealth of information services, but they are first and foremost a propaganda operation that above all else adheres to a very narrow narrative. Their mission is not to provide informed opinion, but to shape opinion. It's not just what they choose to put on the front page, but what they don't.

On matters of politics and culture, everything they publish must be assumed to be a lie. This dishonesty percolates down through everything else they report on. At this point, if the NYT says the sun is going to come up tomorrow, I'll look for confirmation from an alternate source.

And don't forget the Greenwald horde all chanting "Drones! Drones! Worse than Booosh!" for eight straight years...

Those guys all do a lot of damage to the discourse by giving cover to the "both-siderist" bullshit media narrative/business model.

As for who is conservative, if you use the actual definition of the word (one who conserves norms and traditions), Republicans and their voting base haven't been conservative for years; they're the ones who want to tear down the government and start over with Jeebus and Ayn Rand. That has pissed me off for a long time, because it has left their job in governing to the Democrats, who have become a centrist party for the most part, to counter the off-the-charts right wing Republicans and actually run the country. It just boils down to the fact that Republicans are for the most part delusional, and don't give a rat's ass about running the government, so they try to do so from an unworkable radical right wing position that can't do anything but wreck stuff, rather than admit reality and try to do the damn job.

The media culture is quite literally insane. I'm not just talking about print and television new. I mean all of it, including the stuff you and I use--Twitter, Facebook, blogs, comment sections, etc...

We've been heading in this direction for a while. The medium is the message. Most of today's media is clickbaiting, emotion-driven nonsense, as it must be. A medium that reduces attention span and encourages grazing across multiple tabs demands it. And somewhere along the line someone figured out that nothing drives clicks and views like outrage.

I think people have always loved running their mouths about things they know nothing about. The difference between today and before the rise of social media is that they didn't have a ready audience. You can only rant to your neighbors, coworkers and the barber so much in a given week.

Now those same louts do have an audience, and a relatively large one at that--one that rewards them for their outbursts and calls them wise, brave and inspiring. Nothing builds social capital like broadcasting the "right" opinions loudly, emotionally, and frequently.

President Trump didn't cause any of this, but he is a product of the culture and he's acted as an accelerant to the generally dysfunctional state of mass communications. It goes without saying that the press hates him unreservedly and with religious fervor.

It's also no secret that the press is filled with low-IQ, throne sniffing propagandists who are entirely incapable of earning a living through more respectable means. With their constant baiting, framing, double standards, deceptive edits and lies of both commission and omission, they have slowly but steadily lost the trust of most of their viewership. We've been watching it right here on this blog since the 2004 disgrace of Dan Rather.

But the ratcheting intensity driven by their Trump hating pathology has created something new and awful--a general feeling of paranoia, anger and fear that permeates our daily living.

And because Trump has a cunning and instinctive understanding of this circus-like atmosphere, he also adds to the confusion with his own deceit and off-the-wall behavior.

You know what's really insane? Pushing to start another land war in Europe against a first-rate nuclear power, just because you lost an election.

Crumbling Western liberalism desperately wants war with Russia, in the hopes such a cataclysm will keep them in power against the will of nations.

This is the face of the Left, the willingness to sacrifice millions of lives to ram through their flawed vision of the world. They hate us more than you can imagine.

"Yeah da's right, cuz as any fuel no, everywhere you go you find liberals embracing Islam"

Yes, in every Western country, liberals are actively advocating more more Muslim immigration.

Name one majority-Islamic country you'd want your daughter to live in.

If you can't, why would you want to import that culture into the country she lives in now?

Actually Anon, it was the very conservative Dick Cheney who said that what Russia did could be considered an "act of war".

Dick Cheney also said Saddam Hussein was amassing weapons of mass destruction.

He was always an insane war monger. But now he is on your side, so that's cool.

How far you've come, Mr. Negro.

I don't have a daughter, but if I did where she chose to live would be up to her, not me.

Commandeered Queensland- your links-or so you claimed- were proof Hatrian's wall was being built. No they weren't proof. Drumpfuck is still asking for wall designs and has yet to pick one and start building it.

The Keystone Kluster Fuk doesn't even have landowner permission to build on private property-yet.

And don't forget the Dems who can shut the tax money waste from ever getting off the ground.Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

ps How do you divide and wall off a border river and the Big Bend in Texas- CQ?

The embrace of Islam (which rejects social liberalism) by progressives is simply proof that they are fundamentally anti-Western, not pro women.

5:56 PM

Progressives, Libs, Dems work in solidarity with women to advance and protect their rights.

Wingnuts-the scum of the Earth- work tirelessly to remind women to keep their place. How does it feel to be only 77% of the worst men on Earth, Julia?

Anymoose-you saying you have to stand on Westminster Bridge to import culture? Or standing on the bridge makes you cultural?

You are an absolute retard. Isn't there a blog for stupid white people from Iowa that you could infest? You bring nothing of value here.

James Bold said...

"A friend's blog discussed the death by sword (!) of a New Yorker assassinated for being black."

And all the Chimpcongoans assassinated by Blacks for being... there are irrelevant to you.

It's true.  Black Lives Only Matter If White People Take Them.  That's why some crisis actor went from 60-odd percent Black Baltimore to 30-odd percent Black NYC to kill a random ni66er, when he could have hit Moseby or Rawlings-Blake instead.

"This is Trump's America."

This was going on long before Trump, but you're upset that he's going to make you own it and maybe even make you stop it.  This puts an end to your mission as shock troops against Whitey.  IOW, it makes you completely useless to everyone, in every way.  Curtains.

And Mandingo from Iowa links an image which says "Wouldn't it be great if we could inflict Republican policies only on people who vote Republican."  Consider the converse.  Wouldn't it be great if we could inflict Democratic policies only on people who vote Democrat?  "Great Society", "equal housing", "affirmative action", "equal opportunity", "race norming", "disparate impact", mass income redistribution.... imposed on Democrats and Democrats alone.

Know what?  This is what separate countries are for.  There wouldn't be too many White Democrats after the full import of such policies became apparent, and you'd kill the rest in short order just like you killed your most devoted advocate Corinna Mehiel.

"You can't 'import a culture', you numpty."

Funny, there weren't any Islamic jihadists in England until that culture was... imported.

It's obviously time to deport the culture of African stupidity, as nothing less will get rid of it.  Except extermination.
