Brace yourselves.

Will someone please tell me why Rush Limbaugh is fleeing his home in South Florida? I thought that this was supposed to be a fake liberal storm

Well Rush, if it's so fake, why don't you stay there and just ride it out?

Of course we know that he won't, because Rush, like so many others is fleeing the massive storm.

Watching climate change denier , Rick Scott, pleading with his citizens to just "leave now" would be funny in an ironic sort of way if it weren't for the poor people who are caught in this horrific storm having to flee for their lives. You watch the images on television and you really feel for those poor people who have to uproot and disrupt their lives to get out of the storm's path.

All the weather experts are saying that this storm is going to be a monster and it just might hit Florida as a category five storm. Believe me, as a kid who spent a great deal of his childhood in the tropics, I am quite familiar with hurricanes and the type of destruction that they can cause. I have just never seen anything like this. Can you say climate change boys and girls?

Anyway, let's home that everyone stays safe down there.

I kept reading on my club's timeline that these hurricanes were created by the government, using HAARP, to purge minority communities from the Gulf.

The odd thing is: Harvey (Texas) and Irma (Florida) are hitting the two states with the largest number of trailer parks.
It's as though these storms are just here to take out the (trailer) trash.

But I DO hope the storm shifts to the east a bit - away from the Atlantic coast.

They're saying Barbuda is 100% uninhabitable.

To be fair to Rush, the part of his yammering that I read wasn't calling the storm itself fake, it was accusing the media of overblowing every weather event to support a climate change agenda.
He, of all people should know that 1) yes, they overblow any kind of disaster coverage and 2) they do that for RATINGS, that is, money, just like he does.
Which makes his statement disingenuous at best, even if not the flippant hypocrisy it was blown up as in the media.
And on the other hand, fuck that guy. What a repugnant creep.

And on the other end of the climate change disaster:
My friends are having the mandatory evacuation of their homes lifted today and tomorrow just south of Yosemite, where the triple digit temperatures have made a small fire into 11,000 acres that took a thousand firefighters, 14 dozers, 7 helicopters, and multiple air tankers a week to get to 50% containment.
Having fought on a couple of forest fires up in Six Rivers National Forest when I was young, I can see some major differences from the way fires behaved back in the late seventies, most importantly what they are calling "tree mortality", which means dead standing timber that has been killed by bark beetles that have spread through the forests that have been warmer than usual, and weaker from being drier than usual. The forests up there are shot through with dead, standing, trees that go up like kindling and pose a deadly hazard to firefighters who have to work around them.
My friend and her family got really lucky, as their homes are still standing, and they will be allowed to go back to them tonight and tomorrow.

So here's hoping that Florida doesn't get mangled too badly by Irma, and that the islands that Irma basically ground flat don't get a second grinding by Jose, which is growing in intensity and heading right for them.

Doug,

What you say about tree mortality and the ravages of bark beetles makes a great deal of sense. Thanks for the report. Yosemite should be in a beautiful Indian Summer right now with happy black bears. September is the best camping.

Thankfully nothing has caught fire in a major way in San Diego County. The combination of bark beetle infestation and trees lost to drought, particularly oaks, has been a double-whammy to the Cleveland National Forest. The recent El Niño decadal oscillation and the rainy year between July 2016 and last April has saved much of the forest. But even though the trees and shrubs are still alive, the entire southern portion of the state remains at high risk.

Sadly the same cannot be said of Los Angeles County.

Rust Limpaw sez he is leaning because it is a mandatory evac. Rust, Drumpf, Coulter and other scum of the earth have vacation homes on islands in Irma's path. Drumpf has the opportunity for insurance fraud some more.

FJ: The wet winter pretty much grew a lot of underbrush, which dried out in the heat and turned into fuel.
The areas around the Railroad fire where my friend lives haven't burned in nearly a century.
The fire burned through Nelder Grove, a stand of mature redwoods that is fairly famous, but the reports are saying none of the redwoods were killed by it. They have thick, fibrous, bark that is about as close to fireproof as trees get. But the underbrush and forest floor burned all around them.

I saw some coverage of the fires in LA, and they looked awful. The kind of fast-moving all-consuming fires that as a firefighter, you can't do much to stop, except drop stuff on them.

Speaking of which, they had a really interesting fleet of air tankers working the Railroad fires and the Ponderosa fire by Oroville that included repurposed P2V Neptunes (they retire them next year),a smattering of mid-sized prop and jet powered tankers, including a new-ish C-130, a pair of DC-9's and they are flying two DC-10's and the 747 supertanker. And the sky-crane helicopter with a siphon for picking up water from sources close to the fires, along with two kinds of military helos hoisting buckets on cables.
Really exciting to watch them work, except for the folks whose homes they are trying to protect; they didn't seem all that excited, mostly terrified and weary.

The wingnut media have already pointed out the real cause of these monster hurricanes -- teh gays.

Given some of the rumors about Lush Rimjob, he may have decided sticking around to face God's wrath might not be his best option.

Like to know where do all these reporters go when the hurricane hits? Do they ever suffer like the normal people caught up in these tragedies? Do,they have NBC,CNN,ABC,FOX bunkers they hide in?? Jus'wonderin'!!

- So Rush "believes" that these things are "overblown" by "lihbroolz" to "push climate change".
- Well, too bad he didn't haul his fat arse here to the "Houston Area" - in quotes because the area hit by Harvey is larger than some STATES - *before* stupidly shooting off his even-fatter mouth.
- The simple fact is that many hundreds of square miles flooded which had not flooded in known history. The other fact is that, because of the first fact, and **despite** Rush's witless claim, the severity of the impact was =UNDER+estimated, meaning that PEOPLE WERE NOT PREPARED.
-
- Oh, as for the absurd snipe against the reporters? Many of them were reporting **even while their own homes were filled with several feet of water**. The SAME was true of First Responders and Volunteers - literally hundreds of people were out there doing the JOBS, and going above and beyond the call of duty, to
***try to prevent more deaths***
and
***help those who were being hit even worse***.
-
- And no, I will NOT apologize for "hollering" because I am seeing, every day, my *neighbors*, quite literally!, having to put their belongings out onto the street, because yes,
I LIVE IN THE HOUSTON AREA. Just to the West of Houston.
- So Rush can STFU and take is vomited-up poop about "lihbrool eggzadjurashun" and shove it right back up his arse and, as far as I'm concerned, get sucked the bleep out to sea, because I care just as much about his smarmy hypocritical lying arse as he cares about anyone and everyone who is not him.

So Jose missed Barbuda and Antigua, which is lucky for them, although the head of the Red Cross effort on Barbuda said that all it would have done was blow the rubble around.

- I don't know about the *statewide* numbers, but there are damn few "trailer parks" near Houston because the land values have been too high and, especially, the *property TAXES* have been too high. There is no income tax, and if people want to have things like paved roads and indoor plumbing and trash pick-up, the money has to come from *somewhere*. That means property taxes and sales taxes.
- People don't seem to know that Houston is the *third largest city in the US*, and that is not only in terms of square miles. It's not like living in NYC or LA in terms of expense, but it is *not* a collection of trailer parks. Again, I don't know about other places in Texas, but there are damn few "trailer parks" around this area, for petesakes - although, even if there were, I've never seen any evidence whatsoever, in my 61 years of observing humanity, that people suffer less because they are poor, or melanin-enriched, or not the "correct" religion, or whatever.
- Despite whatever mean-spirited fantasies are touted, the fact is that Harvey did not ((and Irma will not)) wipe out any one group while MAGICALLY bypassing another. And denying climate change only means that one will not prepare oneself to survive it - the worst part being, NOT that the unprepared will perish, but rather, after descrying and denigrating and dismissing the rest of us, they will depend upon the rest of us to bail them out.

Brace yerself for this- Netanjehu's son posted an anti-semitic meme on his Facebook page and brace for this- Eric Bolling's only child was found dead today. Talk going around it was suicide because he was shocked and embarrassed about his Dad;s actions and being fired.

This is an interesting link for the science and sheer size and power of this storm. Hurricane Irma: Visual Guide.

It points of some astonishing numbers. The highest portion of the storm over the eye is extremely cold, -118⁰ Farenheit. The water around Florida is quite warm at 86⁰. That's a difference of over 200 degrees! No wonder it is generating so much rain. The eye of the storm is generating 274mm rain per hour or nearly eleven inches.

"Brace yerself for this- Netanjehu's son posted an anti-semitic meme on his Facebook page"

Netanyahu is an asshole, so it's not too surprising that his son is also an asshole. Netanyahu has been willing to get very chummy with the Trump administration, despite the Trump administration containing people who are fairly anti-semitic.

I guess the logic is that, well, okay, these people don't like Jews ... but they hate Muslims more, so somehow Israel will come out ahead in this situation? And maybe Trump's son-in-law will fix everything, because he's Jewish? Not sure. But whatever else is true, making friends with Trump generally doesn't pay off for anyone in the long run.

And now the Netanyahu family are tweeting out white supremacist memes about global conspiracies of evil Jews and lizard people? WTF?

As a Jew, you may have lost your way if David Duke and the Daily Stormer have your back.

@ Pterochromics - I have houses from just east of Houston to Lafayette, Louisiana and I've been through several hurricanes and tropical storms as well. Houston is not representative of the state as a whole. Unlike the suburban sprawl of Southern California - there is is a lot of empty space between the state's larger cities.

Google it. Texas and Florida have the most trailer homes out of all the states. (Per capita, Mexico and South Carolina top the list.)

Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean that they don't exist. MHVillage lists 127 trailer parks in the Houston area.

People don't realize that Houston is the third largest American city because it is the FOURTH largest American city.

And of course hurricanes aren't racist and cannot select their victims. I was just being as ridiculous as the conspiracy theorists who posited the idea that the government is trying to target minorities using HAARP.

Hmmmmm. She moves and counters well, like Rafa. I have a somewhat similar game and when you can get to any shot she demoralized her opponents even Venus. When you can take your opponent's best shot and get it back they have to give up, especially seeing that her fitness level is so high. I bet that foot injury made he realize what she had and how lucky she is to have auch gifts.🤔

OK, my error.
I'm just seeing the results of Harvey all around me, and my ability to sense sarcasm - which is far from stellar even at the best of times =:-o - is currently next to nonexistent.

My apologies for being such a pill...

uglyblackjohn said...

No problem. I get that a lot (not knowing when I'm being sarcastic or sardonic).
And Houston got it bad but it's called the Bayou City for a reason and the high rate of growth left fewer places for water to drain without flooding.

We (Texas) just had a water event - it looks like Florida will suffer from both water and wind.

pterochromics said...

- We moved here because of "The Job" but ended up staying here longer than anywhere else since 1979; oddly, a lot of the people *from* here seemed to be a bit lackadaisical about the flooding, which struck me as odd. Maybe it's like the old saying goes: "familiarity breeds contempt"...?
- I personally don't understand why there is not more Elevated Building being done, as well as better flood control, but then, I also don't understand why there isn't more energy-efficient construction and more wind-resistant construction. Well, actually I do know - people prefer to play the odds and bet that they won't be hit, rather than pay up-front to be prepared for a hit. It is that preference which I don't understand, probably because I loathe gambling as the losing proposition it is.
- Meanwhile, I keep remembering that photo of Galveston after Ike had passed - one house remained standing in a huge swath of scattered timbers and general "stuff". That owner was the only one who had been willing to pay up-front for hurricane-resistant construction.
- The gum-flapping about "a 40,000 year flood" and similar low-odds claims also lulls people into a dangerously-false sense of security, and feeds into the denial of climate change evidence. So it feeds into that whole "it will never happen to *me*" delusion...
-
- ANYWAY, Florida has been hit so often by both flooding and high winds that one would think people would learn, but nope - when an requirement was established for new homes to be constructed with impact-resistant windows and doors, I was told by someone in the business that buyers would split the "savings" for instead using plain glass in windows and doors. In the end, it is not the builder who bears the eventual cost of damages when the glass inevitably fails.
- Meanwhile, clustered living ((apartments and townhouses)) seem to be even more minimal in terms of protective construction, so people who had no hand in making the choice end up displaced, injured, even killed.
- It's all just so heartbreakingly sad.
