The lighter skin guy by virtue of being an overall horrible person can be fat, rude, obnoxious, dumb, impulsive, criminally inclined.
Trump’s fans don’t just like him or lower their standards for him because he is white. Hillary Clinton is also white, and she would never have been able to pull off Trump’s ignorance and dysfunction. Also, there were some political analysts who drew unwarranted conclusions from the polling data.
For example, there was the New York Times' Upshot blog, which confidently predicted 85% CHANCE HILLARY WIN!!
But to be clear, those guys aren't pollsters. They're journalists who were looking at various polls and trying to make predictions based on them, and it's just really hard to understand how they arrived at such bad predictions. Maybe they used poll-aggregation methodology that was bad, or maybe they let their own expectations and desires bias their analysis, but anyway, some of them did fail miserably. The actual polling data for Hillary Clinton in the fall of 2016 oughtn't to have inspired that kind of unreasonable optimism.

I tend to agree with your conclusions about the polling in 2016. Also sometimes the margin of error is larger than predicted. Accurate polling depends on the methodology used.

Yes, China is ahead of us in the development and commercialization of solar panels because their government funds solar R&D and ours doesn't.
But look at how opposed Republicans are to government investment in green tech. Remember how much of a freakout they had about Obama's investment in Solyndra? This was a pure wingnut propaganda opportunity. According to them, one failed investment "proves" that the government can't successfully invest in any industry. Industrial policy is clearly impossible!!
Would they apply this logic to the private sector? Would they consider a Wall Street mutual fund a failure because ONE of its investments didn't pan out? Of course not.
Simply put, Republicans have every reason to paint the government as bumbling and incompetent and unable to invest money wisely, because if they can convince people that the government can't be trusted to spend, there is no reason to tax the rich people the GOP serves.
This is even more true where investing in green tech is concerned. The more green tech takes off, the bigger the hit fossil fuel industries will take -- and those industries are anchored in red states like Texas or Louisiana or (with the advent of fracking) the Dakotas.
