Fear the chair.

I will never understand the internet. I don't understand what drives clicks and makes one particular story more popular than the other. This story of the brawl in Montgomery, Alabama has captured the imagination of black America in ways that you can't imagine. There are memes, jokes, and articles, which makes the point.  As black folks, we have rallied around the folding chair, and we are so damn proud of our people for not sitting back and taking it anymore when we see injustice unfolding (pun intended) before our eyes.

If you have been living in a cave, I will give you a quick synopsis. A black security guard was doing his job and trying to keep a private boat out of the docking area while a commercial ferry was approaching. A  bunch of  boaters (who all happened to be white) jumped the poor guy and all hell broke loose. He was trying to hold his own but the numbers were just to much for him. Then, out of nowhere, a bunch of black strangers decided to jump in and help him. One guy literally swam across the harbor to help. He is now affectionately being called Alabama Aqua Man in black circles.  The fight that followed is all over the internet, and the folding chair has now become a symbol of black resistance.

So let's try to analyze what transpired. I have been trying to figure out if this brawl was purely racial or just some citizens feeling bad for some guy that was getting his ass kicked by a bunch of drunks. But then, I have to ask myself: If the guy getting his ass kicked was white, would all those black strangers have stepped in to help? If there were a bunch of black guys beating a single white security guard, would a bunch of black strangers step in to help the white security guard? Would a bunch of white strangers jump in to help the lone white guy getting his ass kicked?  To the latter question I would say no, to the first question, I would say, yes. But I am not so sure, which is what makes this all kind of fascinating to me.

A quick personal story. I went to high school in Jamaica. It was a boarding school, and there were kids there from all over the world. I had a close friend, Franz Newman, who I hung out with all the time.  (He is living somewhere in Canada now, and I don't think he would mind me using him for this story.) Franz is Jamaican, and proud of it. But he is from a German settlement in the Southern part of the island, and he had blue eyes and blonde hair. I remember him fighting an African American kid who happened to be from New York, and he (Franz) was getting his ass kicked. Who do you think I jumped in and tried to help? Yep, Franz. Why? Because he was Jamaican, and he was my friend. In that moment, my friendship, and my national and ethnic loyalty, took priority over any racial one that I might have. It's complicated, I know. But that was my experience back then, and I was a product of my environment.

My guess is that because of the times we are living in, black folks have become hypersensitive to these types of interactions. So now, more than ever, we see everything in the context of race. I am also guessing that those white folks who jumped that poor security guard might not have done it if he was a white guy doing his job. So them, too, have become racialists in their every day interactions. It's where we are now as a country. And I suspect, sadly, that we will be seeing a lot more Montgomery, Alabama type racial brawls in the days to come.

Thoughts?

My reaction to the notoriety this incident has gotten in the black community is, I have to admit, one of suspicion.

On the one hand, many people sharing this video may be just enjoying the fact that the riverboat ship's captain was defended by members of his ethnic community and avoided being seriously and unjustly injured. But my frank suspicion is that some of the rubberneckers and jokesters may not have cared whether the group of white folks were actually in the wrong (as they clearly were in this case), and would have jubilantly cheered ANY group of white people getting beat up by black people, under any circumstances. And that is ugly.

Also, you asked how things would be different if the races were reversed, and that made me think about how much black people don't trust the police.

Because if the races of the riverboat captain and the belligerent boaters had been reversed, I don't think this brawl would ever have happened at all. If the riverboat captain had been white, and discovered a bunch of drunken, uncooperative black pleasure boaters parked in his rightful spot, he probably wouldn't have argued with them for 40 minutes, and then tried to forcibly push their boat out of his space, which is what caused the whole fracas to kick off; he'd have just called the cops, who in turn would've promptly evicted the black folks.

The riverboat captain handling things himself instead of calling the cops, and maybe even the crowds of people joining in and defending him with (lol) folding chairs instead of calling the cops, are strong elements in why a viral-video-worthy brawl took place here.

WTF? They jumped the dude. Nobody would have given a fuck if they parked their boat there all day long but you don't gang up and jump somebody for doing their job. THAT'S why this shit happened.

Also Field, dude is Aquamayne LOL!

I dunno about that. I think it was more likely that the black people involved in the confrontation were fortunate and the cops who eventually arrived were at least somewhat professional.

If a crew of racist cops had shown up, this being Alabama, they wouldn’t have cared who started it. They would have finished it by exercising maximum force against the black folks.

This provides a good argument for prosecutors to ask that the trial jury members be kept anonymous to protect them from Trump’s unhinged, cultish followers.

After all, Trump and friends are now defending themselves from RICO charges, like a bunch of mobsters. Might as well go ahead and treat this like a mafia trial, because that’s basically what it is.

To me it restores a little bit of faith in humanity. Three or four white guys decide that they can take one black security guard no problem. The adrenaline response kicks in as one after another takes a swing at the poor man. It's interesting that they come in running like they were playing football. As a few more white partiers join in the fracas, even a girl gets very belligerent.

Then some young men on the next dock see an injustice taking place. And instantly the tables are turned. I can imagine what they were saying as they strolled on up. "You look like you could use some help, my brother." The white dewds instantly crumple and slink away. Order is restored.

From the start it wasn't a real fight because no one ended up in the water.

America was built on racism. The definition of racism is indoctrinated into our souls a long, long, long time ago. Racism is American, like baseball and apple pie. Centuries after you've taken your final breath on this planet, racism and America will continue to be synonymous with each other.

So, the question begs: Why are racist acts such as what occurred in Montgomery, Alabama still considered to be news? I mean, Alabama is a State within the United States of America, is it not? As a Black mam in America, I believe we'd serve a greater purpose as Blacks if we focused on our own shortcomings (hate crimes and sex crimes against our own skin color) opposed to America's instilled practices toward people of color.

Sadly, today there is once again a story about "unorthodox policing techniques" by some of America's (not) finest.

A drug dealer in NYC fled a police sting on a scooter. So one of the officers had the brilliant idea to chuck a drinks cooler at him, causing him to lose control of his scooter, crash, and die.

Flying Junior said...

Damn, some cops are just hard-wired for violence. Any guy who would all of a sudden get the idea to use a cooler as a weapon is clearly into violent beatings. He didn't really throw it. He just happened to be standing there as Eric Duprey came flying by. He simply lifts the heavy cooler up and thrusts it in the path of the cyclist, sort of jumping out of the way. He jams it right into his face and chest.

Too fucking much.

Republicans had recruited him to run and thought his fame would help bring in enough money to mount a serious challenge. So less than ten years ago, mainstream republicans thought that the idea of building a fence, or "wall," if you will, along the border was a non-starter.

“So less than ten years ago, mainstream republicans thought that the idea of building a fence, or ‘wall,’ if you will, along the border was a non-starter.”>

To be clear, it was probably the “start shooting migrants” part of Joe’s comments that might have been most controversial among Republican leadership, not so much the “building a wall” nonsense. Republicans have actually been awful for a while; Trump merely dialed everything up a few notches.

And even violence toward border-crossers is actually not that taboo in the GOP anymore. The Biden administration is currently suing Texas Gov. Abbott over the floating barrier he has illegally installed in the Rio Grande. This barrier consists of buoys supporting webbing that extends down underwater to make it hard to dive under, and I’m assuming that the buoys will spin and flip you backwards if you try to climb over them. But what if you try to squeeze between the buoys instead? No worries; there are razor sharp blades located between the buoys that will cut you if you try to do that.

So, apparently, Republicans are already pretty much okay with deliberately injuring border-crossers. How long before they promote the idea of simply killing them?

Alabama Congressional Map Struck Down

September 5, 2023 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 188 Comments

“A panel of three federal judges on Tuesday rejected Alabama’s latest version of its congressional district map, saying the Republican-led legislature did not follow a court order to comply with the Voting Rights Act when it redrew districts in July,” the Washington Post reports.

The judges said in the order that they are “deeply troubled that the State enacted a map that the State readily admits does not provide the remedy we said federal law requires.”

“The U.S. Supreme Court had issued a decision in June upholding a lower court’s ruling, which found that the Alabama legislature drew congressional districts that unlawfully diluted the political power of its Black residents.”

Rick Hasen: “I expect Alabama will seek emergency relief at the Supreme Court and it will lose. The only real argument Alabama would have following the earlier Supreme Court decision is a constitutional one, and it was barely developed on remand. I expect if Justice Kavanaugh is to eventually entertain it, it would be in a case where the issue was much more fully briefed and developed.”

A federal judge handed Donald Trump a significant loss in court, saying the twice-impeached four times indicted President is liable for defamatory statements he made about writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when she went public with claims he raped her decades earlier.

This is a partial victory for Carroll, with the judge ruling a trial is needed only to determine how much Trump must pay her in damages. That's unusual since a jury usually determines at trial whether a defendant is liable for civil damages claimed by a plaintiff.
