Post- Mortem

~Paraphrasing Ali Velshi~ The most powerful person in America is not Donald J. Trump, it's you.

These are tough times for progressives and democrats in America. There was a red wave this past week, and everyone in democratic circles are scratching their heads and trying to figure out why. Even the winners seemed a little shell shocked by the scope and magnitude of the outcome.

I'm not, and if you are a student of American history, or if you pay attention to the psyche and mindset of the white majority population in America, you would not be either.

Frist, let's stop with all the talk about white working class and economic angst, and democrats not addressing their concerns. (James Carville, and Bernie Sanders, old white men themselves, will never get it.)  If you gave a lot of these white working class voters a million dollars, and in order to keep it they would have to have voted for Harris, your money would have been safe. They still wouldn't have done it. It has nothing to do with economics and everything to do with identity. Kamala's race and gender made it damn near impossible for her to win. Her opponent, at times, was acting like he wanted to lose, and he still beat her by a country mile. Performing fellatio on a mike at a rally, declaring that immigrants are eating cats and dogs, threatening political violence against his enemies, is not a winning message, but it worked for trump because it was never about the message. It was always about the people who are running. Plain and simple.

As Americans we never like to hear this, because we like to think of ourselves as somehow being above bigotry and ignorance. We believe that this experiment in democracy is complete, and that we have created a perfect union. We have not. Take a look around you. Look who we are sending back to Washington. Not only Trump, but all of the slimy loathsome self-serving politicians who thrive in an environment of hate and division. Trump is the face of it, and he made it cool to hate without having to act like we are the haters. We channeled our hate through him. That's who we elected as our next president. A man who has spent his entire political life dividing people, and demonizing those who look different and who he perceives as being less than. This includes not only ordinary citizens, but military service members as well. The people who served in his administration and know him best told us who he is, and we still chose not to believe them. Why?  Because deep down most Americans ( I can say most now based on  the election results) know that we are no different than he is.

I feel bad for black women who truly thought they had allies with white women. That their solidarity of sisterhood, united in their fight for reproductive freedoms, would be enough to beat the tyrant in waiting at the ballot box. It was not. At the end of the day, whiteness and fear of others comes first. Trump knew this, and he used it to his political advantage.

A few years back a white women who worked for me told me that she might be coming into work a little later for a few days. She told me that she had to renew her parking privileges at a garage that was much closer to our place of work. And until then, she would have to rely on someone else to drop her off.  In the meantime, she couldn't park in a garage that was farther away. She just couldn't take the chance of walking a longer distance to work. Center City, Philadelphia (by all accounts the safest part of anywhere in the city), was just too dangerous for her.

I thought about my former co-worker a lot during this election cycle. When those scary dark and ominous trump commercials of young brown men were running over and over, I knew that they would have their intended outcomes. Talking heads on cable television and political pundits were saying that there is no way Americans (especially suburban white women) would embrace Trump's message of fear and division. They were wrong. Harris and her message of joy, hope, and not going back, was never going to work with a majority population, whose fears and prejudices were a much more motivating factor in how they voted.

I will let Elie Mystal's quotes close this post.

"America deserves everything is about to get. We had a chance to stand united against fascism, authoritarianism, racism, and bigotry, but we did not. We had a chance to create a better work for not just ourselves, but our sisters and brothers in at lease some of the communities most vulnerable to unchecked white rule, but we did not. We had a chance to pass down a better safer, and cleaner world to our children, but we did not. Instead, we chose Trump, JD Vance, and a few white South African billionaires who know a thing or two about instituting apartheid...America did this. America, through the process of a free and fair election, demanded this.. And America, as a collective, deserves to get what it wants."

These next four years will be interesting. And I will be hear for it. Hopefully, so will you.

I can’t really agree with this take. Some of the people who flipped to Trump were people who had voted for Biden when Harris was his VP, and Obama before that. These folks are not ALL racists, nor sexists for that matter.

I’m not suggesting that hate didn’t play a big part. Clearly hate is a big piece of Trump’s appeal. I was worried when Biden stepped down (which was necessary, because his polling was terrible) and Kamala Harris ended up being the replacement, because I knew her race and gender would count against her. But the party decided that they couldn’t unite around any other candidate so late in the game, so she was really the only option at that point.

But what needs to be explained in this particular race is not mainly the choices of bigots but those of the NON-bigots who changed sides and pushed Trump over the line. For that explanation, my money is on economic factors. And when I say economic factors, I really mean voter ignorance about economics, blaming Biden and the Democrats for an inflation spike that was caused by a damn virus.

There was a Guardian article that made a related argument. I don’t know if it was true, but it was plausible. The writer suggested that lower-income people liked the expanded unemployment/welfare and housing protections that were extended during COVID and were upset when they were taken away when the pandemic ended and decide to punish Biden (and then Harris). But this is, again, a function of voter ignorance. Trump only agreed to offer these benefits because there was a crisis and never would have otherwise. And Biden and the Democrats are the guys who would have made them permanent; Republicans are the ones who took them away. That is enough to make me pull my hair out. How do so many voters not understand how any of this works?

Anonymous said...

Regardless of the fact that Trump owes his victory to stupid people who don’t know what the Federal Reserve is, and think the president has a magic lever he can pull to make inflation go away, the bigots are surely going to take Trump’s reelection as a public endorsement of their hate, and a mandate to discriminate.

Black people are getting invitations to return to slavery from white supremacists. The manosphere is filled with sales of T-shirts reading “Your body, my choice!”

You can expect a full-frontal assault on civil liberties, which will likely result in mass rioting. I am trying not to think too much about how ugly things are going to get.

She is incompetent. Voters saw that and acted accordingly. Besides that, the Biden misery index is off the charts. Normal people are struggling to make ends meet.

We have a propaganda problem. It's not just that a (perhaps) majority of voters don't know how the government works and therefore can't make an informed choice in their own self interest, it's that our information delivery systems have collapsed and have largely been replaced by bad actors with evil intent.
If someone understands their situation, even if it isn't good, they can make choices that will tend toward improving it.
If they are repeatedly and in a sustained fashion barraged with fucking lies about their situation and how it got the way it is, it's damn hard to make hard choices about remedying it's shortcomings.
That is not to let "low information voters" off of the hook: for the most part, they all have access to the same internet that the rest of us have, but the goddamn propaganda is an actual force to be reckoned with. They wouldn't use it if it didn't work, and the fucking shit is everywhere you look.
The US economy is the envy of the post-pandemic world.
The policies of the Biden/Harris administration pulled off an almost unprecedented feat: they kept workers and citizens afloat when the pandemic shuttered huge swaths of the economy, and brought the inflation THAT WAS A WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON back under control without a recession, while keeping unemployment at historic lows.
The soft landing.
So what does the propaganda do? Screams "EGGS COST MORE AND IT'S BIDEN'S FAULT!"
No, you miserable pine cone, eggs cost more for a while because of the bird flu that required the wholesale slaughter of millions and millions of chickens and then because the grocery companies were slow to reduce retail prices after the wholesale prices went back down.
Inflation does not equal prices. Prices do not magically recede back to pre-inflation levels when inflation goes away.
But that means that people are still paying higher prices for things than before the inflation spike, so they are susceptible to the lies that inflation is still high, opening the door for the propagandists.
And that is only the sane, somewhat fact adjacent propaganda. After swallowing whole the barrage of Republican lies (tax cuts pay for themselves, etc.) for decades, "They are eating the dogs!" isn't the leap it otherwise would have been, and we're off into a world where reality has fallen out of fashion.
Well, I hate to break it to the fashionistas of propaganda, but reality does not give one single shit about what you believe.
Which sets up an inevitable collision between events in the real world and the actions the propaganda consumers take to deal with them. (see also: covid, injection of disinfectant).
Reality always wins. How many losers will have their lives ruined or taken from them in their resistance to it remains to be seen, but the effect the propaganda has on the composition of our government is something we need to deal with sooner rather than later. Like that bird flu, which has jumped from birds to cows, pigs and people. It still isn't transmissible between people as far as we know, but I'll bet you that hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin or UV light up your butt won't stop it if it starts to.

Yeah, it’s infuriating how many people just seem to vote on nothing but vibes. The real information is out there; you just have to put in a minimum of effort, but clearly a ton of people aren’t. Yes, our legitimate news media are badly damaged. Yes, there are all sorts of wingnut propaganda rags cranking out lies. Yes, social media is a toilet. But the real facts are still knowable.

So, in addition to a degraded information ecosystem, I also think there is a degraded political culture. A willful “not giving a crap” and putting no effort into understanding which party has which policies and how those might affect one’s life. Has it always been this bad?

On top of which, there is the matter of messed-up priorities. Even if you idiotically believe that “mean Democrats make stuff cost more” … is there absolutely nothing else that matters? Is it really okay to just ignore racist and sexist rhetoric and policies (assuming you’re not actively in favor of those things) just to get the damn egg prices down? What about Republicans dismantling democracy? No biggie, as long as there are cheap eggs? (Although, partly this is probably because they see the claims of Republican democracy-hatred as just an empty Democrat talking point, rather than the reality that it is. Which is a function of, once again, willful ignorance.)

This all seems incredibly amoral and short-sighted, at best. I mean, we are not even talking Weimar Germany here, where inflation was in, like, triple digits and people were pushing around wheelbarrows to buy a potato. The US only had 3 years post-COVID of moderately higher inflation than usual. But hey, burn it all down, America is no longer the land of the free … because egg prices.

Fergus will not be able to do a lot of the stupid, stupid shit he has been yawping about because there is still a United States Government, the workings of which he is still frighteningly vague on despite four years of "leading" it.
I am a little curious, though, at how his supporters will react to the effects of the things he can and will accomplish.
Tariffs, for example, are within the purview of any sitting president, and he has been consistent in his desire to massively increase them. So just imagine that he doesn't radically increase them like he has been saying, but instead institutes a moderate increase in the tariffs on our largest trading partners out of his misplaced idea that "trade deficits mean you are losing" and some other such horseshit chasing itself around in his addled thing-where-the-brain-should-be. First thing is prices here go up on all of those goods commensurate with the amount of the tariffs because PEOPLE IN BUSINESS DO NOT LOSE MONEY ON TRADE. Then there are the knock-on effects in the economy that price increases always produce, you know, the ones the Biden administration just fought to a standstill after cleaning up the goddamn mess he made of the economy last time. Then will come the retaliatory tariffs imposed by those trading partners. All of which tend to raise prices for US citizens.
Then there's the deportations. Now, mass deportations would destabilize the economy fifteen ways from Sunday, but even the threat of deportations will suppress the amount of undocumented labor available. Just ask Georgia what happens when you crack down on undocumented workers.
Not only will prices on regular items go through the roof, but speaking of roofs, good fucking luck getting yours fixed or replaced without undocumented workers. Better hope for good weather... oh that's right, Fergus has vowed to repeal all of the climate legislation Biden got passed because he thinks that oil company CEO's dicks taste like Belgian chocolate.
So, now, imagine three years from now and the Fed is raising interest rates to try and pull back the wave of double digit inflation that has resulted from the stupid, stupid actions of our stupid, stupid president, resulting in a recession that he won't have the chops to stave off like Biden did. Will his supporters even notice? Hell yes they will, they won't have the option not to. So what I'm curious about is how they will try to blame it on the Democrats.

Bannon, who served as White House chief strategist in the early months of the first Trump administration, called on Republican senators to take immediate action by blocking any judicial appointments made by President Joe Biden. "

"We ain't going to approve one judge," he insisted. "No federal judges because guess what? CNN and MSNBC and Lawrence Tribe and all of it, we control the Supreme Court."

"And now, since we're going to block all the judges because you waited too long, you had all four years, you had time to do it, but you thought you were going to run the tables on us, you believed your own polling," he continued.

Trump is going to appoint Mike Huckabee to be the US ambassador to Israel. For anyone who doesn't know, Huckabee is an evangelical nutjob who believes that the conflict in the Middle East is a pure conflict between good and evil, and Israel are by definition the the good guys they must get their way in order to fulfill some end-times Biblical prophesy.

Here is an article from back in 2008 describing his unconditional love for the state of Israel: Mike Huckabee Hearts Israel

This should give you some idea on where Trump stands on reining in Israel: He absolutely won't. You should have already known this if you paid attention during his first time anyway, but Huckabee's appointment should eliminate any residual doubt.

Trump checks off every one of these boxes. In fact, it was his example that prompted me to _memorize_ that list.

So what are we to make of the evangelical Protestants, plus the Opus Dei Catholics? They hate each other, but they unite behind a man like that. That's an unstable coalition. He promised them power, so they sold out. It's like we're living in a fairy tale, about the corruption of pious hypocrites. So what will be the tale's ironic comeuppance? “Yet the majority of Muslims in America voted for Trump.”

Nope. That didn’t happen.
High-quality polling in the wake of the election is still ongoing, so demographic numbers are still hazy, but CAIR (a major Muslim organization) published their own polling that said a majority (53%) of Muslims cast protest votes for no-hoper candidate Jill Stein, while roughly equal numbers cast votes for Trump (21%) and Harris (20%).

That said, if you are a person chose to flush your vote down the toilet by voting for Stein, you are no less of an epic dumbass than if you actually voted for Trump. You helped elect a man who hates you as a Muslim and will attempt to wreck the country where you live, all so you could make a totally symbolic gesture that will help precisely zero Arabs or Muslims in the Middle East.

I’m really tired of the people complaining that they don’t want to have to hold their nose and vote for the “lesser of two evils.” This is how democracy works! Particularly under the rules of the two-party-favoring American electoral system. Society will collapse while you are throwing tantrums over not having candidates perfectly represent your worldview.

With the majority of the vote presumably now counted, it looks like there was only a net transfer of about 2 million votes from Biden in 2020 to Trump in 2024.

Most of Harris’ loss came not from Biden voters switching parties, but from Biden voters having a massive sulk and not voting at all (or casting protest votes for third-party no hoper candidates, which is the same as not voting). This was a drop of ~5.5 million sulkers.

My explanation for the non-voters/protest voters is that the bulk of them are low-information types who wrongly blamed Biden for inflation, with a smaller number of Muslims and lefties who couldn’t get past the issue of Israel/Palestine or people who somehow just couldn’t stomach a black woman as president. These folks found Trump repugnant as well, so they deliberately wasted their votes or didn’t vote at all.

But all of those stories in the media about how they don't have the votes to confirm Gaetz and maybe Hegseth are missing the point entirely. Fergus' second term won't work without Gaetz (I mean, it won't work anyway, but Fergus doesn't see a path forward in which there is a functioning DOJ that doesn't operate as his personal law firm.) so he'll get all of them in there. The Republicans in the goddamn senate are not gonna tell him no, no matter what he asks.

At this point, I don’t exist expect congressional Republicans to do anything but crouch down and lick Trump’s balls when he commands them to.

If Trump doesn’t want confirmation hearings, it’s not because he doesn’t think his appointees will get confirmed. It’s because confirmation hearings will allow Democratic senators to ask unpleasant questions that will reveal how absolutely vile his appointees are, and videos of those Q & A sessions may go viral and be viewed by the general public.

Trump doesn’t want the public seeing how the sausages got made, because these sausages are full of arsenic and turds.

Field...your commentary shows
EXCELLENT understanding of racism and how it is strategically used to benefit those in power in America and the world. However, most Blacks may NEVER fully understand the excellent points of your commentary for the following reasons:.
Blacks have dealt with 400 years of being oppressed, being divided & conquered, being lied to, being kept illiterate, being kept under educated, being cheated, being duped, being blind sighted, being taught to act like "crabs in a barrell" and being taught to hate themselves...Furthermore, many blacks, and many other people of color, and a small handful of whites are still hoping for something that's NEVER going to happen.
So, for all minority folks that are still scratching their heads in disbelief , THINK ABOUT IT LIKE THIS...Which would you vote for?
A) Maintaining nearly all of the "privileges" that keeping YOUR MEN in power gives to you. ...OR
B) Being able to get an abortion in your state when u need one.
Which one would you choose? Duuuh!
The reason why many blacks don't understand this kind of power is because 400 years of racism, deception and opression keeps them in a state of confusion.

The Purple Cow said...

The biggest caveat to Trump’s victory is that fewer Americans eligible to vote bothered to do so compared to 2020. Then over 158m voted, this time the vote was down to 153m. The voter turnout of those eligible fell to 62.2% from the high of 65.9% in 2020.

The total number of Americans of voting age in 2024 is 265m. However 42% of those did not do so. Partly this was because the number of Americans who failed to register rose to 19m from 12m in 2020. So although Trump got over 50% of those who voted, he actually got only 28% support of Americans of voting age. Nearly three out of four Americans did not vote for Trump. Harris polled under 27%. The real winner of the election was (yet again) the ‘no vote’ party. The ‘no voters’ were 38% of the eligible vote and 42% of those of voting age. The difference in the 2024 election was that while Trump got about the same number of votes in 2024 as he did in 2020, Harris lost over 10m votes compared to Biden in 2020.

So while I agree with Field’s basic premise - that the USA is totally fucked, it is not irredeemably so. I know it appears that there is no situation that the Democrats can’t fuck up, but it's entirely possible that they can once again convince working class people that they are capable of working in their interests. If they were to suggest economic policies that actually worked for the working classes (for instance adopting the Cleveland model of urban renewal) they can once again persuade them not to stay home on election day.

One thing you can bet your mortgage on, Trump’ economic policies will be a disaster for the working class. If when MAGA economics crash and burn, the Democrats finally were to break with the neo-classical economic model and come up with some fresh radical policies they could yet still turn the USA around.
